Highly Sensitive Sensor System Using Composite Sensor Coatings For Identification Of Chemical Isomers, Nicholas David Post Oct 2022

Highly Sensitive Sensor System Using Composite Sensor Coatings For Identification Of Chemical Isomers, Nicholas David Post

Dissertations (1934 -)

Direct liquid-phase sensing of aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and m-, p-, o-xylene (BTEX) is of significant interest in environmental monitoring applications due to their severe impact on human health, and their prevalence in the products of the petrochemical industry. Moreover, each of these chemicals, including each xylene isomer, is utilized for petrochemical applications for which there are not currently viable replacements or cost-effective substitutions. As a result, isomer-specific identification is an important process-control capability for a number of industrial chemical separations, a family of processes that amounts to approximately 15% of total global energy consumption. In this …

Functionality Of The Gracilis Collateral Is Impaired Following Arteriogenesis And Cell Transplantation, Ada A. Tadeo Oct 2022

Functionality Of The Gracilis Collateral Is Impaired Following Arteriogenesis And Cell Transplantation, Ada A. Tadeo

Biomedical Engineering

Peripheral Arterial Disease involves narrowed arteries, reducing blood flow to limbs. Increasing blood flow to those extremities is possible by redirecting the blood to flow through natural bypasses (i.e. collateral arteries), which can enlarge via arteriogenesis to maintain blood supply once the prominent arteries have become occluded. This study aims to investigate how arteriogenesis affects collateral function, if myoblast transplantation can stimulate collateral growth, and how that in turn may affect collateral function. Femoral artery ligation was performed to mimic the blockage that occurs in patients with ischemic diseases on lean mice and mice with diet induced obesity (DIO). A …

Reckoning With Structural Racism In Legal Education: Methods Toward A Pedagogy Of Antiracism, Doron Samuel-Siegel Oct 2022

Reckoning With Structural Racism In Legal Education: Methods Toward A Pedagogy Of Antiracism, Doron Samuel-Siegel

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

There is an empty quality to much of what passes as "diversity, equity, and inclusion" work in legal education. Despite a robust body ofscholarship on teaching law consistent with the goals of antiracism, many legal educators struggle to put theory into practice. This Article responds to that struggle, offering a holistic, methodical approach to a pedagogy of antiracism whose goal is twofold: create conditions in which racially minoritized students learn to their full potential, free from the harms of traditional legal education; and equip all students, regardless of identity, to contribute to the dismantlement of structural racism. Absent such pedagogy, …

Queer Liberation's Long March Towards Equality: How Lgbtqia+ Advocates May Seek To Combat The Rise Of Anti-Lgbtqia+ State-Level Legislation And Substantiate Broader Lasting Legal Protections In A Post-Bostock World, Davis J. Villano

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the implications of the landmark Supreme Court decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia, which ruled that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. While this decision represents a significant step forward for LGBTQIA+ rights, the article argues that it does not provide comprehensive protection, as evidenced by the ongoing proliferation of anti-transgender legislation and hate crimes. It emphasizes the need for legislative action, particularly through the passage of the Equality Act, to address these gaps and ensure broader legal protections for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

It uses the Shinnecock Nation's legal battle over billboards as a case study to argue for stronger federal protection against state encroachment.

A Data Driven Modeling Approach For Store Distributed Load And Trajectory Prediction, Nicholas Peters Oct 2022

A Data Driven Modeling Approach For Store Distributed Load And Trajectory Prediction, Nicholas Peters

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The task of achieving successful store separation from aircraft and spacecraft has historically been and continues to be, a critical issue for the aerospace industry. Whether it be from store-on-store wake interactions, store-parent body interactions or free stream turbulence, a failed case of store separation poses a serious risk to aircraft operators. Cases of failed store separation do not simply imply missing an intended target, but also bring the risk of collision with, and destruction of, the parent body vehicle. Given this risk, numerous well-tested procedures have been developed to help analyze store separation within the safe confines of wind …

“Nothing To Do But Be Borne And Steered”: Unpacking Feminist Scripts In Elana Arnold’S Damsel, Jenna Spiering, Nicole Ann Amato

Faculty Publications

Feminism in novels marketed for young adults often reflects the values of a popular feminism that relies on individual and personal means of empowerment, rather than critiquing or seeking to dismantle systems of domination. In this paper, we illumminate frameworks and methods for engaging students in careful readings and evaluations of texts marketed as feminist, through an analysis of Elana Arnold’s feminist fairy tale, Damsel (2018). Drawing on theoretical frameworks of popular feminism, feral feminism, and theories of becoming, the authors use Critical Content Anlaysis to explore several tenets in contemporary feminist thought in order to analyze Arnold’s text and …

Approximation By Basis Pursuit: Background And Application To The Construction Of Efficient Spline Approximations, Babita Timalsina Oct 2022

Approximation By Basis Pursuit: Background And Application To The Construction Of Efficient Spline Approximations, Babita Timalsina

Graduate Student Scholarship

Basis Pursuit was developed primarily as a tool in the field of signal processing, beginning in the mid 1990’s. The idea is to model the behavior of discrete signals using a wide range of functional behaviors and scales and to obtain an accurate and efficient representation of the signal using a minimal number of functions from a large “dictionary” of possible behaviors. The key observation is by formulating the representation as an ℓ1 optimization, the problem can be posed as a linear program so that the optimal solution uses no more than the number of constraints - it must be …

Monarchical Constitutional Guardianship And Legal Metissage In Asia, De Maartje Visser, Andrew. Harding Oct 2022

Monarchical Constitutional Guardianship And Legal Metissage In Asia, De Maartje Visser, Andrew. Harding

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article presents a roadmap for examining the phenomenon of monarchy in Asia, which we conceive as a pluralist institution in a twofold manner. First, many monarchies discharge a wide range of roles and responsibilities ranging from the symbolic to the religious to the legal-political. These varied functions can be usefully captured under the notion of constitutional guardianship, and call for intersectional analysis. Second, it is common for monarchies to have metamorphosed from being purely endogenous institutions to becoming ones embedded in a scheme of limited, constitutional government under the influence of ideas from elsewhere. Monarchies should accordingly be viewed …

Cfo Gaps: Determinants And Impact On The Corporate Information Environment, Xia Chen, Na Li, An-Ping Lin Oct 2022

Cfo Gaps: Determinants And Impact On The Corporate Information Environment, Xia Chen, Na Li, An-Ping Lin

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

A CFO gap arises when the CFO position is left vacant for a period between the departure of the old CFO and the appointment of a new CFO. We find that CFO gaps are fairly common; over the sample period 2004–2016, approximately one-third of CFO turnovers are associated with a CFO gap, lasting on average two quarters and two months. CFO gaps are more likely for firms that face more labor market search frictions and with financial reporting and performance issues, and are less likely for firms with succession plans and with greater growth opportunities. While CFO gaps are not …

That's Important, Interesting, And Generative: Winners Of The Amj 2021 Best Paper Award And Research Impact Award, Jennifer Howard-Grenville, Gurneeta Vasudeva, Daphne W. Yiu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Management scholars have long been encouraged to pursue interesting research that causes us to think differently about topics or offers counterintuitive explanations (Colquitt & George, 2011; Davis, 1971). Laszlo Tihanyi, as editor in chief for AMJ, warned of “the potential trade-offs between writing interesting versus important research” in his second FTE (Tihanyi, 2020: 329). He called for “studying problems that are not merely interesting but are relevant to society,” in other words: important. It is fitting, then, that this FTE celebrates and explores our two latest award-winning papers, “The hidden cost of prayer: Religiosity and the gender wage gap” (Sitzmann …

The Differential Effects Of Csr And Csi On Consumer Willingness To Pay: Implications For Service Providers And Retailers, Sabine Benoit, Julia Hartmann, Christina Sichtmann, Martin Wetzels Oct 2022

The Differential Effects Of Csr And Csi On Consumer Willingness To Pay: Implications For Service Providers And Retailers, Sabine Benoit, Julia Hartmann, Christina Sichtmann, Martin Wetzels

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Service providers and retailers reselling branded have the discretion to set and adapt prices according to customers’ willingness to pay (WTP). Research often notes markup effects, such that WTP increases in response to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and markdown effects, lowering their WTP for corporate social irresponsibility (CSI). Theory suggests attitude changes to (negative) CSI are stronger than to (positive) CSR, but the extent and whether this difference holds for WTP and across various product types are unknown. Using experimental data, an incentive-compatible measure, and an actual purchase, this article reports on three studies that show that consumers mark up …

Innovation In The Sharing Economy: A Framework And Future Research Agenda, Sabine Benoit, Yonggui Wang, Lefa Teng, Daniel P. Hampson, Xia Li

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The sharing economy (SE) has been variously described as a disruptive, discontinuous, and social innovation. Now, more than a decade since the emergence of seminal platforms such as Airbnb, and amid heightened competition and macroenvironmental pressures, service innovation has become a strategic priority. Our editorial essay is guided by three objectives. First, as a prelude to this Special Issue, we examine the current state of SE service innovation literature. Despite some important contributions, especially in relation to business model innovation, other salient types of service innovation remain underexplored. Second, we position the contributions of the 13 papers in this Special …

Misunderstood Menu Metrics: Side-Length Food Sizing Leads To Quantity Underestimation And Overeating, Thomas Allard, Stefano Puntoni Oct 2022

Misunderstood Menu Metrics: Side-Length Food Sizing Leads To Quantity Underestimation And Overeating, Thomas Allard, Stefano Puntoni

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This research highlights consumers' failure to understand food sizing communicated using side-length metrics (e.g., 12-inch pizza, 8-inch cake, 2-inch cookie), which are ubiquitous in menus and online interfaces. A series of studies show that describing food size options using side-length metrics leads to food quantity underestimation and food intakes misaligned with consumers' objectives. This robust effect arises because of a linearization heuristic where people do not adequately adjust for the exponential difference in the surface area associated with linear changes in side-length metrics. Choice architecture interventions that replace side-length information with metrics varying linearly with quantities (e.g., surface area, numbers …

Explanation Guided Contrastive Learning For Sequential Recommendation, Lei Wang, Ee-Peng Lim, Zhiwei Liu, Tianxiang Zhao Oct 2022

Explanation Guided Contrastive Learning For Sequential Recommendation, Lei Wang, Ee-Peng Lim, Zhiwei Liu, Tianxiang Zhao

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Recently, contrastive learning has been applied to the sequential recommendation task to address data sparsity caused by users with few item interactions and items with few user adoptions. Nevertheless, the existing contrastive learning-based methods fail to ensure that the positive (or negative) sequence obtained by some random augmentation (or sequence sampling) on a given anchor user sequence remains to be semantically similar (or different). When the positive and negative sequences turn out to be false positive and false negative respectively, it may lead to degraded recommendation performance. In this work, we address the above problem by proposing Explanation Guided Augmentations …
