The Intersection Of The U.S. Immigration System And Human Trafficking: A Legalized Labor Of Injustice, Stephanie Durr

MC Law Review

In order to provide a critical analysis of the structural barriers to justice faced by trafficking victims, this Comment will explore the legal framework of trafficking in the United States since 2000, discuss how that framework perpetuates trafficking, review the existing remedies available to trafficking survivors, and analyze whether the existing remedies accomplish their purported goals. Part II of this Comment details the legal framework of human trafficking, including the Trafficking Victims Protection Act and its progeny, as well as relevant case law interpreting the Act’s statutory language. Part III analytically explores how trafficking is perpetrated through temporary work visas. …

An Appeal To Heaven—The Timeless Plea For Nollan/Dolan Extension To The Sphere Of Legislative Exactions, Sam Sturgis Oct 2022

An Appeal To Heaven—The Timeless Plea For Nollan/Dolan Extension To The Sphere Of Legislative Exactions, Sam Sturgis

MC Law Review

“. . . [W]henever the legislators endeavour to take away and destroy the property of the people . . . they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are thereupon absolved from any farther obedience . . . .”1

In 1772, the colonists of Weare, New Hampshire, were given a choice: cede all white pine trees grown on their lands to the King of England or pay a hefty fine. It was an odious decree—one that struck at the very ideal of the American colonies. Imbued as they were with a sense of divine right to …

Constitutional Standoff: An Example Of Practical Difficulty In Mississippi Venue Rules, Hunter C. Ransom Oct 2022

Constitutional Standoff: An Example Of Practical Difficulty In Mississippi Venue Rules, Hunter C. Ransom

MC Law Review

Mississippi’s legislature and judiciary have been locked in a constitutional standoff over procedural rulemaking power for decades. In an article describing the history of the conflict, author William H. Page has predicted that the situation will inevitably lead to “practical difficulties” down the road. Years later, given ongoing conflicts among various aspects of civil procedure in Mississippi, that prediction is beginning to appear prescient. A prime example has developed in Mississippi’s venue rules.

This Comment has three goals. First, it seeks to resurface Page’s discussion of the “constitutional standoff.”3 Second, it describes how Page was likely correct in predicting that …

Faculty Works

In this response to Professor Jill Fisch’s article "GameStop and the Reemergence of the Retail Investor," we focus on one of the risks associated with the growth of retail investing that Fisch surveys, uncontrolled information sourcing. Drawing on our work on retail investors, we revisit an instrument dear to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, whose potential has not been unleashed so far, the corporate forum. Our response succinctly discusses the main mechanics of the corporate forum, the benefits the corporate forum could provide, and the feasibility hurdles that might undermine the success of corporate forums.

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Background: Obesity predominantly affects populations in high-income countries and those countries facing epidemiological transition. The risk of childhood obesity is increased among infants who had overweight or obesity at birth, but in low-resource settings one in five infants are born small for gestational age. We aimed to study the relationships between: (1) maternal metabolite signatures; (2) fetal abdominal growth; and (3) postnatal growth, adiposity, and neurodevelopment.
Methods: In the prospective, multinational, observational INTERBIO-21st fetal study, conducted in maternity units in Pelotas (Brazil), Nairobi (Kenya), Karachi (Pakistan), Soweto (South Africa), Mae Sot (Thailand), and Oxford (UK), we enrolled women (≥18 years, …

Teratogenic Effects Of Cannabinoid And Serotonin Receptor Disruption On Neural Crest Development, Brian K. Wells Oct 2022

Teratogenic Effects Of Cannabinoid And Serotonin Receptor Disruption On Neural Crest Development, Brian K. Wells

Biology Theses

Neurotransmitters are well-studied in adults and have often been the focus of many treatments for both physical and psychological ailments. This thesis explores the teratogenicity of altering the activity at the serotonin 2B and 2C receptors (5-HT2B; 5-HT2C) and the cannabinoid 1 receptor (CB1R) in the serotonergic and endocannabinoid systems, respectively. This investigation is focused on neural crest derivative structures. Chapter 1 reviews the background information behind cardiac and cranial neural crest cells and overviews the serotonergic and endocannabinoid systems. In Chapter 2, using a pharmacological agent, 1-methylpsilocin (1-MP), we disrupt the activity of 5-HT2B and 5-HT2C in the early …

A Dynamic Sir Model For The Spread Of Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) In Malaysia, Nur Aziean Mohd Idris, Siti Khadijah Mohtar, Zaileha Md Ali, Khadijah Abdul Hamid

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

The emergence of the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case in Malaysia has increased the number of infected cases. Hence, this study proposes a Susceptible-Infected-Recovery (SIR) epidemiological model of the COVID-19 epidemic to portray the outbreak's situation. The SIR model is numerically solved using the Fourth-order Runge-Kutta (RK4) method in Matlab®. The Euler method verifies that the graphical results of the SIR model are reliable and valid. In addition, this study analyses the stability of disease-free and endemic equilibriums of the SIR model by the Jacobian matrix. The results show the outbreak for phase 1 occurs in the first 100 …

Prediction Of Life Expectancy For Asian Population Using Machine Learning Algorithms, Nurul Shahira Pisal, Shuzlina Abdul-Rahman, Mastura Hanafiah, Saidatul Izyanie Kamarudin Oct 2022

Prediction Of Life Expectancy For Asian Population Using Machine Learning Algorithms, Nurul Shahira Pisal, Shuzlina Abdul-Rahman, Mastura Hanafiah, Saidatul Izyanie Kamarudin

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

Predicting life expectancy has become more important nowadays as life has become more vulnerable due to many factors, including social, economic, environmental, education, lifestyle, and health condition. A lot of studies on life expectancy have been carried out. However, studies focusing on the Asian population are limited. This study presents machine learning algorithms for life expectancy based on the Asian population dataset. Comparisons are made between tree classifier models, namely, J48, Random Tree, and Random Forest. Cross validations with 10 and 20 folds are used. Results show that the highest accuracy is obtained with Random Forest with 84% accuracy with …

Chemical Interactions And Cytotoxicity Of Terpene And Diluent Vaping Ingredients, Yanira Baldovinos, Alexandra Archer, James C. Salamanca, Robert M. Strongin, Christie Sayes Oct 2022

Chemical Interactions And Cytotoxicity Of Terpene And Diluent Vaping Ingredients, Yanira Baldovinos, Alexandra Archer, James C. Salamanca, Robert M. Strongin, Christie Sayes

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Vaping devices have risen in popularity since their inception in 2007. The practice involves using a variety of commercially available devices. Internal heating systems in devices aerosolize e-liquid formulations of complex mixtures including an active ingredient (e.g., THC, CBD, and nicotine), diluents (or cutting agents), solvents, and flavoring agents (e.g., terpenes and aldehydes). The vaping toxicology literature consists of cytotoxicity studies of individual chemicals and commercial formulas. Because of the variation of e-liquid composition, there is a limited understanding of the toxicity of ingredient combinations. This study analyzed the cytotoxic effects after exposure to individual and binary mixtures of a …

Extreme Tail Ratios And Overrepresentation Among Subpopulations With Normal Distributions, Theodore P. Hill, Ronald F. Fox Oct 2022

Extreme Tail Ratios And Overrepresentation Among Subpopulations With Normal Distributions, Theodore P. Hill, Ronald F. Fox

Research Scholars in Residence

Given several different populations, the relative proportions of each in the high (or low) end of the distribution of a given characteristic are often more important than the overall average values or standard deviations. In the case of two different normally-distributed random variables, as is shown here, one of the (right) tail ratios will not only eventually be greater than 1 from some point on, but will even become infinitely large. More generally, in every finite mixture of different normal distributions, there will always be exactly one of those distributions that is not only overrepresented in the right tail of …

Conflict

In the past, I’ve always been one to avoid conflict. Conflict always had a negative connotation in my mind. I did whatever I could to avoid it. Because of my aversion to conflict, I have had to compromise my time and my efforts in numerous situations. I’ve held my tongue to prevent problems; but sometimes, this would lead to even more. This has affected me all my life, whether its a friend who said something I wasn’t fond of or a waitress that messed up my order, I almost never said anything simply to avoid conflict. Last year, I …

"Confluency"

The power of conflict leads to resolution, personal healing, and revelatory insights.

As a kid, I was taught to voice my opinion in an educated, effective, and efficient way. However, when my ideas were different from those of my peers or society, and many disagreed, I was rejected, ignored, or muted. As I grew up, I noticed that thinking out of the box was a positive feature, especially when debating ideas with friends, family, and colleagues.

Respecting our differences and disagreements is a crucial part of a healthy society. Conflict has a negative connotation; however, having a thoughtful and …

I am grateful for the opportunity to write this piece, share my thoughts and give a moment of gratitude for the grace that medical students show to others, their attending physicians, patients and most importantly themselves Effective writing, speaking, and expression is easily born from a struggle with others. Our own internal battles emote themselves as prolific poetry.

This piece was inspired by the quote by Yeats.
