Shifting Geopolitics: Reimagining Globalization And Spatial Representation In The Post Covid-19 Era, Victoria H. Bergström

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

Abstract: Since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the utilisation of maps has been at the forefront. Maps have informed policymakers, governments, and citizens of the distribution and spread of the disease. Although these maps have been used for various purposes, from border closures to curfews, there is an inherent danger in this widespread usage. Aside from the intricacy of these spatial representations, these widely distributed representations encourage isolationism and the reconception of borders in an increasingly globalised world. Furthermore, new connectivities through digital means have created a potential solution to international exchanges amidst physical limitations. Nevertheless, elitism prevents the …

Intersectionality And Impact Of Covid19: Politics Of The Private Sphere And Gender-Based Violence, Sabah Hussain Oct 2022

Intersectionality And Impact Of Covid19: Politics Of The Private Sphere And Gender-Based Violence, Sabah Hussain

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

One of the primary contradictions in the administration of power consists of inequalities between women and men. The attitudes, behaviours, and roles which societies prescribe as congruous for the construction of ‘gender’ can be the consequence, the root, and structure of power relations, involving the very intimate domain of the domestic to the utmost levels of the political sphere and decision-making. As the COVID-19 crisis deepens economic and social strain combined with social isolation measures and constricted movement, the instances of gender-based violence also started to rise exponentially. Many women were being forced to 'lockdown' in the domestic setting with …

Factors Influencing The Development Of Social Change Involvement, Linda Johanson, Patti P. Urso, Kimberly Priode

Journal of Excellence in Nursing and Healthcare Practice

How to cultivate and encourage the motivation to become an agent of positive social change has not been studied to a great degree. For example, what kind of factors influence the development and growth in nurses toward a desire to be involved in changing society for the better? Knowledge of these factors could help educators and nurse leaders provide and encourage those growth opportunities. The purpose of this research was to interview nurses known to be deeply involved in various types of positive social change and discover what factors influenced this development. Three overall themes emerged as influencing factors for …

Successful Percutaneous Management Of Lvad Outflow Graft Stenosis: Role Of Invasive Hemodynamics In Decision Making, Tarun Dalia, Amandeep Goyal, Harsh Mehta, Henedine C. Foster, Eric Hockstad, Aaron Rohr, Philip Johnson, Travis Abicht, Bhanu Gupta

The VAD Journal

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) outflow graft stenosis (OGS) is a rare but lethal complication. We present a case of a 79-year-old male with pertinent past medical history of an LVAD implanted as destination therapy, stage III chronic kidney disease, and hypertension. He was admitted for low-flow alarms, and the echocardiogram showed stable right ventricle function and no pericardial effusion. Invasive hemodynamic assessments demonstrated a peak-to-peak gradient of 90 mm Hg in the outflow graft between the mid and distal ends of the graft on pullback. Contrast angiography confirmed OGS. The OGS was successfully treated with a VBX-covered stent (Gore). …

Moons, Maths, And Middle-Earth: Misconceptions About Tolkien’S Scientific And Mathematical Prowess, Kristine Larsen

Journal of Tolkien Research

Tolkien's use of real-world science in fleshing out his secondary world of Middle-earth is well-known, including errors he made in the process. With the recent publication of The Nature of Middle-earth, additional attention has been paid to Tolkien's use of mathematics in the same vein. However, reviews of the volume tend to reflect misconceptions about the level of Tolkien's mathematical ability.

The Role Of Academic Libraries In Restoring Quality Teaching And Learning In Education For Sustainable Development In Nigeria, Muhammad Kabir Abubakar Oct 2022

The Role Of Academic Libraries In Restoring Quality Teaching And Learning In Education For Sustainable Development In Nigeria, Muhammad Kabir Abubakar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The quality of teaching and learning is the key to sustainable development. This has inspired innumerable educational stakeholders to search for means of restoring quality teaching and learning in Nigeria’s education system. To accomplish this, significant epistemological efforts have been made over the years on teaching methods/models, student learning styles, and curriculum content reforms. However, the role of academic libraries has not been given any significant consideration. It is, therefore, the conviction of this paper that sustainable development depends profoundly on the availability of information provided and accessed through a well-managed library for effective teaching, learning, and research. So, using …

Packet Tracing In Distributed Network Architectures, Gaganjeet Reen, Naveen Gujje, Maneesh Soni, Kaarthik Sivakumar

Defensive Publications Series

In a distributed network architecture, tracking the network function node instances through which a network packet traverses, the time that a packet spends in each of the network functions, and the operations that the functions perform on each packet are extremely important when troubleshooting packet processing issues. However, such distributed architectures often include legacy services which cannot be readily extended (either because of the architecture or because of the programming language used) to include solutions to facilitate the above-described tracing. Techniques are presented herein that support a novel OpenTelemetry-based packet tracing approach that facilitates data plane debugging in a distributed …

Environmental Policy And Investment Location: The Risk Of Carbon Leakage In The Eu Ets, Marzio Galeotti, Filippo Maria D'Arcangelo Oct 2022

Environmental Policy And Investment Location: The Risk Of Carbon Leakage In The Eu Ets, Marzio Galeotti, Filippo Maria D'Arcangelo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper empirically investigates the effect of the European Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) on cross-country investments. To avoid carbon leakage, the scheme allocates a number of free allowances to firms at risk of relocating investments in areas outside the EU ETS. To study this problem, we employ a model of the firm’s investment decision in conjunction with novel firm-level data. In contrast with most previous literature, we stress the importance of firms’ heterogeneity in the analysis and leverage it. We derive conditions for the firm’s optimal emissions to construct a measure of investment sensitivity to carbon pricing from observed …

Emerin Interacts With Histone Methyltransferases To Regulate Repressive Chromatin At The Nuclear Periphery., Nicholas Marano, James M. Holaska Oct 2022

Emerin Interacts With Histone Methyltransferases To Regulate Repressive Chromatin At The Nuclear Periphery., Nicholas Marano, James M. Holaska

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Departmental Research

X-Linked Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy is caused by mutations in the gene encoding emerin. Emerin is an inner nuclear membrane protein important for repressive chromatin organization at the nuclear periphery. Myogenic differentiation is a tightly regulated process characterized by genomic reorganization leading to coordinated temporal expression of key transcription factors, including MyoD, Pax7, and Myf5. Emerin was shown to interact with repressive histone modification machinery, including HDAC3 and EZH2. Using emerin-null myogenic progenitor cells we established several EDMD-causing emerin mutant lines in the effort to understand how the functional interaction of emerin with HDAC3 regulates histone methyltransferase localization or function to …

Hydrogen Adsorption And Isotope Mixing On Copper-Functionalized Activated Carbons, C. M. Quine, Hillary L. Smith, C. C. Ahn, A. Hasse-Zamudio, D. A. Boyd, B. Fultz

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

High-specific surface area (SSA) carbons were functionalized with copper nanoclusters and evaluated as potential hydrogen storage materials. The adsorption and desorption behaviors of the copper-functionalized material and pristine high-SSA carbon are compared between 77 and 400 K using adsorption isotherms up to 10 MPa and by temperature-programmed desorption of isotopic hydrogen. The high-SSA activated carbon with copper nanoclusters exhibited two desorption behaviors. (1) A desorption peak at 120 K, which was associated with physisorption on carbon, and (2) a desorption peak at 310 K, which was associated with a chemisorption process involving copper. The desorption from copper was strongly dependent …

Employing Discrete Solid Phases To Represent C-S-H Solid Solutions In The Cemdata07 Thermodynamic Database To Model Cement Hydration Using The Phreeqc Geochemical Software, Niall Holmes Dr., Mark Tyrer, Denis Kelliher

Articles

This paper presents a cement hydration model over time using the cemdata07 thermodynamic database and a series of derived discrete solid phases (DSPs) to represent calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) as a binary solid solution with two end-members. C-S-H in cement is amorphous and poorly crystalline with a range of molar Ca/Si ratios from 0.6 to 1.7. It displays strongly incongruent dissolution behaviour, where the release of calcium into solution is several orders of magnitude greater than silicon. It is, therefore, important that any cement hydration model provides a credible account of this behaviour. C-S-H has been described in the cemdata07 …
