CLN1 disease, also called infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) or infantile Batten disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder resulting from mutations in the CLN1 gene encoding the soluble lysosomal enzyme palmitoyl-protein thioesterase 1 (PPT1). Therapies for CLN1 disease have proven challenging because of the aggressive disease course and the need to treat widespread areas of the brain and spinal cord. Indeed, gene therapy has proven less effective for CLN1 disease than for other similar lysosomal enzyme deficiencies. We therefore tested the efficacy of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) by administering monthly infusions of recombinant human PPT1 (rhPPT1) to PPT1-deficient …

A Quantitative Metric Of Pioneer Activity Reveals That Hnf4a Has Stronger In Vivo Pioneer Activity Than Foxa1, Jeffrey L Hansen, Barak A Cohen
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: We and others have suggested that pioneer activity - a transcription factor's (TF's) ability to bind and open inaccessible loci - is not a qualitative trait limited to a select class of pioneer TFs. We hypothesize that most TFs display pioneering activity that depends on the TF concentration and the motif content at their target loci.
RESULTS: Here, we present a quantitative in vivo measure of pioneer activity that captures the relative difference in a TF's ability to bind accessible versus inaccessible DNA. The metric is based on experiments that use CUT&Tag to measure the binding of doxycycline-inducible TFs. …
Perceptions Of Role Transition Among Nurses Working In Both Clinical And Faculty Positions, Teresa A. Wenner
Perceptions Of Role Transition Among Nurses Working In Both Clinical And Faculty Positions, Teresa A. Wenner
Dissertations
In response to the current nurse faculty shortage and the anticipated return of a nationwide shortage of Registered nurses (RNs), the use of part-time clinical nurse educators has been increasing. It was not known how nurses experience the work-role transition from clinical expert to part-time clinical faculty member when they subsequently work in both a clinical and an academic setting. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore this population. Research questions were: 1) How do part-time clinical nurse faculty members perceive the work-role transition from clinical expert to clinical instructor when they continue to maintain their …

A 40-year-old female presented for surgical consultation of an upper extremity soft tissue mass. Initial ultrasound report recorded a 5.5 cm mass, consistent with a subcutaneous lipoma. Intra-operative visualization revealed an intramuscular lipoma emerging from brachialis muscle. Post-excision MRI was ordered for continued axillary fullness which revealed lipomatous extension into axilla and posterior arm with multiple level encasement of the brachial plexus. Lipomas with brachial plexus involvement are rare and can present with a range of symptoms and distortion of local anatomy. Surgical debulking is challenging requiring microsurgical expertise for adequate removal and to minimize long-term neurological deficits.

Reactive powder concrete (RPC) is defined as a cementitious composite material with an optimized size of granular constituents, very low water-to-binder ratio (w/b), pozzolanic materials like silica fume (SF), and discontinuous fiber reinforcement. RPC applications include bridge decks and girders, seismic columns, wind turbine towers, and pile foundations. Especially, a durable and robust RPC pile foundation with long service life is essential in building construction because continuous maintenance is impossible. Moreover, natural in-situ conditions such as water table, temperature, and sulfate concentration in soil to which the pile foundation is exposed are critical and related to deteriorating the pile foundation. …

Silicone implants have been used for cosmetic enhancement and reconstructive purposes for over 60 years. Despite assiduous efforts to ensure safety, there is continuous evidence that they are not as biologically inert as previously postulated. We present two cases of autoimmune syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) in Hispanic women. The first patient developed biopsy-proven immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy that was successfully treated with the combination of silicone explantation along with immunosuppressive therapy. Findings after implant removal demonstrated rupture and leakage of silicone from gluteal implants. The second patient developed autoimmune hemolytic anemia in the setting of a ruptured silicone breast implant. …
Predicting Guiding Entities For Entity Aspect Linking, Shubham Chatterjee, Laura Dietz
Predicting Guiding Entities For Entity Aspect Linking, Shubham Chatterjee, Laura Dietz
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Entity linking can disambiguate mentions of an entity in text. However, there are many different aspects of an entity that could be discussed but are not differentiable by entity links, for example, the entity "oyster" in the context of "food" or "ecosystems". Entity aspect linking provides such fine-grained explicit semantics for entity links by identifying the most relevant aspect of an entity in the given context. We propose a novel entity aspect linking approach that outperforms several neural and non-neural baselines on a large-scale entity aspect linking test collection. Our approach uses a supervised neural entity ranking system to predict …

Il-1Β-Dependent Extravasation Of Preexisting Lung-Restricted Autoantibodies During Lung Transplantation Activates Complement And Mediates Primary Graft Dysfunction, Wenbin Yang, Daniel Kreisel, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Preexisting lung-restricted autoantibodies (LRAs) are associated with a higher incidence of primary graft dysfunction (PGD), although it remains unclear whether LRAs can drive its pathogenesis. In syngeneic murine left lung transplant recipients, preexisting LRAs worsened graft dysfunction, which was evident by impaired gas exchange, increased pulmonary edema, and activation of damage-associated pathways in lung epithelial cells. LRA-mediated injury was distinct from ischemia-reperfusion injury since deletion of donor nonclassical monocytes and host neutrophils could not prevent graft dysfunction in LRA-pretreated recipients. Whole LRA IgG molecules were necessary for lung injury, which was mediated by the classical and alternative complement pathways and …

COVID-19 resulted in a mortality rate of 3-6% caused by SARS-CoV-2 and its variant leading to unprecedented consequences of acute respiratory distress septic shock and multiorgan failure. In such a situation, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and care for cancer patients are difficult tasks faced by medical staff. Moreover, patients with gynaecological cancer appear to be more prone to severe infection and mortality from COVID-19 due to immunosuppression by chemotherapy and coexisting medical disorders. To deal with such a circumtances oncologists have been obliged to reconsider the entire diagnostic, treatment, and management approach. This review will provide and discuss the molecular link …

Rewriting The Classical: Contemporary Writers’ Reception Of The Story “Goose Cage Scholar”, Wenbin Gu
Rewriting The Classical: Contemporary Writers’ Reception Of The Story “Goose Cage Scholar”, Wenbin Gu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper examines how contemporary writers develop the literary features of Wu Jun’s (649-520) story “Goose Cage Scholar”, and analyzes how they borrow and transform such aspects as the story’s narrative theme, perspective and implications so as to elaborate on the meaning behind contemporary writers’ acceptance of the story of “Goose Cage Scholar.” The article maintains that this cultural phenomenon not only proves the potential of classical fiction but also demonstrates how such works can be rewritten. The articles concludes that this practice of creative rewriting may be viewed as a social and academic problematization by which we can explore …

On Li Linfu And The Poetic Circle In The Golden Age Of The Tang Dynasty, Fang Ding
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Li Linfu, prime minister of the Xuanzong period of the Tang dynasty, was in charge of state affairs for two decades and was a notorious culprit in the decline of the state. As a cunning and crude official, Li was particularly hostile to the literati. One important reason was his failed attempt to crown Prince Li Mao, as Prince Li Heng became heir to the throne with the support of the literati. Li Linfu’s scheme to overthrow the crowned Prince Li Heng continuously encountered resistance from the literati represented by Zhang Jiuling. Viewing the literati as his political opponents, Li …

A Probe Into The Social Ecology Of Scholars’ Making A Living In Strange Stories From A Chinese Studio, Yongbin Xu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Pu Songling recounted how ancient scholars made a living in his Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, and the means fell into the following categories: home school tutoring, copying books, making paintings and calligraphic works, and doing business. These practices reflected the social reality of the scholars’ life in the Qing Dynasty. The idea behind these practices in the Qing Dynasty was influenced by Xu Heng’s claim that “the primary task of a scholar is to make a living” in the Yuan Dynasty, and the idea underlay the scholars’ practice of making a living in the Ming-Qing dynasties while the …
Qu-Poetry In The Republic Era And The Construction Of New National Poetry: Centering On Lu Qian’S Non-Dramatic Qu-Poetry, Shijia Kang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Shuobu (fiction, sketches and miscellanies) was a common bibliographical term in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its content mainly covered the categories of fiction and miscellanies, as well as biographies in the category of history and essays in the category of literature. On the level of bibliographical classification and stylistic discrimination, shuobu was related to miscellaneous books and fiction, outlining its basic landscape within the context of traditional scholarship and allowing potential space for the development of zixue (the learning of philosophers). However, due to the academic transformation and the rise of literary discipline since modern times, fiction has become …

The Institutional Nature Of Texts: On The Reform Of Yuan Zhen’S Imperial Proclamation Writing, Zhihui Zhong
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In Yuan Zhen’s reform of imperial proclamation writing, content is given priority over form. The content covered two parts of the instructions to officials on the responsibilities and obligations and the descriptions of merits and demerits of officials, both belonging to the institutional attributes of imperial proclamation. When Yuan Zhen sought the support of imperial power for his reform, his reform was then subjected to the operation of the institutional power. As a result, his reform of linguistic style in the proclamation drafting was doomed to be incomplete. However, his efforts to introduce a less archaic style into the imperial …

Postemotional Representations And Psychological Symptoms In The Narrative Mechanism Of Internet Literature, Wanbo Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Emotionalism has undergone a series of transformations since the late 1980s until the rise of Internet literature. Such writing techniques as teasing, joking, and skepticism unfold the trend of postemotionalism in Internet literature. Fictional writings such as the journey to immortality and fantasy novels are particularly engaged with fantastic emotions. Fictions of popular genres on the internet moves emotions from the dignified and elegant to the ordinary and the everyday. System novels and ACGN novels employ ACGN culture and game realism to create new patterns of emotions, that is, the pursuit of emotional depth is replaced with the upgrading of …
Bodily Practice And Symbolic Overflow: How The Perceptual Becomes A Theorist In Practice, Weibang Liu
Bodily Practice And Symbolic Overflow: How The Perceptual Becomes A Theorist In Practice, Weibang Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Aesthetics, as a science of perception, starts from the embodied “sense” and ends up becoming a theoretical “science.” It focuses on the ways in which sense becomes a theorist in practice. Reconstructing aesthetics via the dimension of body is neither a simple negation of practical aesthetics nor a mechanical repetition of contemporary Western aesthetic discourse, but a coordinating framework of “history-body-field” with the perceptual practice of body at its core. Such process allows aesthetics to be restored as “body-semiotics.” The body is not only the perceptual base of narrating, historicizing and rationalizing the embodied practice, but also the material support …
From Unfortunate Ending To Conscious Will: The Transformation Of Wang Guowei’S Tragic Ideas, Wei Si
From Unfortunate Ending To Conscious Will: The Transformation Of Wang Guowei’S Tragic Ideas, Wei Si
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This article analyzes the significant transformation in Wang Guowei’s tragic ideats from unfortunate ending to conscious will. Influenced by the anthologies of Taoka Reiun and The World as Will and Idea (1883), Wang Guowei initially accepted Schopenhauerian theory and considered unfortunate ending as an absolute criterion and indispensable element for tragedy. After his contact with Friedrich Nietzsche’s theory, Wang Guowei gradually abandoned his previous understanding of will centering on blind desire, departing from his translation of Psychology (1902). Consequently, he considered the foundation for will no longer as desire, but as consciousness. This change has led Wang Guowei to the …

On The Motivations Of The Theory Of Imposed Interpretation And Their Paradoxes, Qilin Fu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Zhang Jiang’s article “A Renewed Discussion on Imposed Interpretation” intends to return to the meta-question of hermeneutics and to further clarify the inherent motivations for imposed interpretation, and it can be taken as an effort of contribution to the theoretical basis for contemporary Chinese hermeneutics. However, this article fails to effectively solve the aporia of imposed interpretation, and its constructive strategies proposed appeared paradoxical. The future of hermeneutics is not only a linear development from deconstruction to construction, but also a presence with paradoxes mixed with construction and deconstruction, and the resulting hermeneutics presented as a paradoxical one implicated with …
Denotation And Meta-Narratives: Double-Layered Narrative Of Films Based On Real Stories, Yuping Zhao
Denotation And Meta-Narratives: Double-Layered Narrative Of Films Based On Real Stories, Yuping Zhao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Reconstructing real events in film is almost as old as filmmaking itself. Films based on real stories have received considerable scholarly attention, which engages a wide variety of inquiries including the question of non-fictionality and fictionality and the boundary between feature films and news. The most remarkable characteristic of real-story-based films is that they form a world of denotation, which at once constructs stories and presents facts, depicting the events while interpreting their meanings at the same time. Those films have a dimension on the meta-level, in which events—the basis of the meta-narrative—are interpreted and turned into stories. The denoted …

Potentiality, Resistance And Bare Life: Giorgio Agamben On Melville’S Bartleby, Yanjun Wang, Yaping Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The idea of potentiality runs through Giorgio Agamben’s political philosophy. In his analysis of Herman Melville’s Bartleby, the Scrivener, Agamben thoroughly interprets potentiality and bare life through Bartleby’s “I prefer not to”. Agamben believes that Bartleby’s inoperativeness is the highest form of resistance, which exists as pure potentiality against the power apparatuses in modern society. Agamben considers Bartleby’s inoperativeness as the exact way to redeem bare life in modern society, where the state of exception already becomes normality. This article starts with Agamben’s reading of Bartley, focuses on potentiality, resistance and bare life to analyze the pure and thorough way …

From Cultural Studies To Literary Studies: The Evolution, Turn, And Problems Of Diaspora Theory, Qixing Zhou
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
As an interdisciplinary theory that emerged in the 1990s, the discourse of diaspora theory has engaged with varying fields: ethnicity studies, postcolonial studies, globalization, and literary studies. With the continuous evolution and deepening of the diaspora phenomenon, this theory has remained open. Cultural identity, as the core of diaspora theory, is emphasized as being constantly constructed and produced by the subject, and being in a state of hybridity, while the traditional fixed and single identity is overthrown. With the fading of (post)colonial history, globalization has risen to the forefront of diaspora theory, replacing (post)colonization; meanwhile, the core of diaspora theory …

Beginning, Renewal And Spirit Or Ashes: On Heidegger's Historical Consciousness In His Discussions Of Hölderlin's Poetry, Xiaoming Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Heidegger's discussions of Hölderlin's poetry plays an important role in his philosophy of existence. However, it also sparks great controversies, which mainly focus on whether the Heideggerian interpretation implies Heidegger’s “Fighting Spirit” of devoting himself to reality. This article does not view such controversy as a theme of significance, but examines how such a convoluted thought in Heidegger’s philosophy of existence is related to the historical depth as he’s perceived., The relation is expressed through the interpretation of poetry, and the philosophy of existence places Hölderlin’s poetry in the same critical temporal point when a nation faces a decisive historical …

Two Faces Of Literary Ethics: Martha Nussbaum’S Literary View And Its Inner Tension, Yun Fan
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
As an influential thinker and public intellectual, Martha Nussbaum is distinguished in the field of philosophy by her great passion for literature and arts. She not only brings to the fore literary imagination/narrative in intellectual discussions, but also inherits and develops such classical idea as “the alliance of poetry and ethics” in the contemporary context. She has effectively explored the contribution literature has made in response to the ethical question as to “How should one live?” In her explication of the literary ethics, Nussbaum refers to the value of literary ethics in two respective dimensions, “perception” and “therapy,” which not …
