Integrated Host-Microbe Plasma Metagenomics For Sepsis Diagnosis In A Prospective Cohort Of Critically Ill Adults, Katrina L Kalantar, Pratik Sinha, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
We carried out integrated host and pathogen metagenomic RNA and DNA next generation sequencing (mNGS) of whole blood (n = 221) and plasma (n = 138) from critically ill patients following hospital admission. We assigned patients into sepsis groups on the basis of clinical and microbiological criteria. From whole-blood gene expression data, we distinguished patients with sepsis from patients with non-infectious systemic inflammatory conditions using a trained bagged support vector machine (bSVM) classifier (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.81 in the training set; AUC = 0.82 in a held-out validation set). Plasma RNA also yielded a …
Proportioning Collection Space And Learning In An Academic Library: Collection Performance Indicators, Christopher Stewart, Louise Lowe
Proportioning Collection Space And Learning In An Academic Library: Collection Performance Indicators, Christopher Stewart, Louise Lowe
Faculty Scholarship
Assessment on university campuses increasingly emphasizes learning outcomes and student success. Academic librarians need to identify relationships between their collection spaces and the learning activities of the university in order to play a role in the environment of assessment. Measuring the propor- tions of discipline-oriented content of library collections and comparing those proportions to discipline-oriented learning activities produces collection performance indicators. Academic libraries can use collection performance indicators to assess how well their collection spaces correspond to student demand and student success using readily available metrics. Collection performance indicators answers a gap in library literature per- taining to relationships between …

"Glad She Was There, Otherwise I Would Have Failed": Student Perceptions Of An Embedded Librarian, Susan Franzen, Mallory Jallas, Joshua Newport, Caitlin Stewart, Allison Rand
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Embedded librarianship offers students, faculty, and librarians the opportunity to work closely together. After many years of collaborating with faculty partners and assisting students both inside the classroom and out, an embedded librarian in an undergraduate nursing research course sought the student perspective on having an embedded librarian.
In spring 2021, the research team scheduled focus groups to measure students’ perceptions of the embedded librarian’s impact on their research experience. Twenty-four students in five focus groups participated via Zoom. The group members met with students to capture firsthand accounts of their experiences.
This poster presentation will highlight students’ perceptions of …

Marsupials have been a powerful comparative model to understand mammalian biology. However, because of the unique characteristics of their embryology, marsupial pluripotency architecture remains to be fully understood, and nobody has succeeded in developing embryonic stem cells (ESCs) from any marsupial species. We have developed an integration-free iPSC reprogramming method and established validated iPSCs from two inbred strains of a marsupial, Monodelphis domestica. The monoiPSCs showed a significant (6181 DE-genes) and highly uniform (r2 [95% CI] = 0.973 ± 0.007) resetting of the cellular transcriptome and were similar to eutherian ESCs and iPSCs in their overall transcriptomic profiles. …

Human Journeys In The Digital Age: Advances And Challenges In Digital Historical Migration Studies, Paul Longley Arthur, Isabel Smith
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Accelerations in migration, mobility, and processes of globalization in recent decades have intersected with parallel developments in information and communications technology (ICT). These advances have had profound influences on historical and cultural research. With reference to a diverse range of international projects, this paper outlines major directions and opportunities in the growing field of Digital Historical Migration Studies (DHMS). The “digital turn” brings opportunities for integrating data on macro and micro scales, and finding new ways to combine and explore tensions between quantitative and qualitative materials, and between external observations of migrants and migration and self-representations by migrants. The plural …

Summing Feynman Diagrams In The Worldline Formalism, C Schubert, N Ahmadiniaz, J Edwards, C Lopez-Arcos, Ma Lopez-Lopez, Cm Mata, J Nicasio
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The worldline formalism shares with string theory the property that it allows one to write down master integrals that effectively combine the contributions of many Feynman diagrams. While at the one-loop level these diagrams differ only by the position of the external legs along a fixed line or loop, at multiloop they generally involve different topologies. Here we summarize various efforts that have been made over the years to exploit this property in a computationally meaningful way. As a first example, we show how to generalize the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin formula for the non-perturbative gauge transformation of the fermion propagator in QED …

Ecosystems in the North American Arctic-Boreal Zone (ABZ) experience a diverse set of disturbances associated with wildfire, permafrost dynamics, geomorphic processes, insect outbreaks and pathogens, extreme weather events, and human activity. Climate warming in the ABZ is occurring at over twice the rate of the global average, and as a result the extent, frequency, and severity of these disturbances are increasing rapidly. Disturbances in the ABZ span a wide gradient of spatiotemporal scales and have varying impacts on ecosystem properties and function. However, many ABZ disturbances are relatively understudied and have different sensitivities to climate and trajectories of recovery, resulting …

African Governments’ Foreign Publics Engagement: Public Diplomacy In African Perspective, Isaac Antwiboasiako
Articles
Scholars over the years have delved into the discourse of states’ foreign publics engagement in achieving their foreign policy objectives. This analysis is done generally with the western perspective of public diplomacy with recent Asian scholarship evolving. As a result, this study aims to reflect on public diplomacy from an African perspective. Therefore, it analyses how African governments have engaged their foreign publics (foreign governments and their citizens) to attract foreign aid, tourism, and investments in their nation-building and development trajectory. The article explores African public diplomacy mechanisms such as diasporas, nation branding, cultural diplomacy, and many others. It also …

Convolutional Long-Short Term Memory Network With Multi-Head Attention Mechanism For Traffic Flow Prediction, Yupeng Wei, Hongrui Liu
Convolutional Long-Short Term Memory Network With Multi-Head Attention Mechanism For Traffic Flow Prediction, Yupeng Wei, Hongrui Liu
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Accurate predictive modeling of traffic flow is critically important as it allows transportation users to make wise decisions to circumvent traffic congestion regions. The advanced development of sensing technology makes big data more affordable and accessible, meaning that data-driven methods have been increasingly adopted for traffic flow prediction. Although numerous data-driven methods have been introduced for traffic flow predictions, existing data-driven methods cannot consider the correlation of the extracted high-dimensional features and cannot use the most relevant part of the traffic flow data to make predictions. To address these issues, this work proposes a decoder convolutional LSTM network, where the …

Neoplastic Cell Enrichment Of Tumor Tissues Using Coring And Laser Microdissection For Proteomic And Genomic Analyses Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Qing Kay Li, Daniel Cui Zhou, Yize Li, Rita Jui-Hsien Lu, Li Ding, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: The identification of differentially expressed tumor-associated proteins and genomic alterations driving neoplasia is critical in the development of clinical assays to detect cancers and forms the foundation for understanding cancer biology. One of the challenges in the analysis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the low neoplastic cellularity and heterogeneous composition of bulk tumors. To enrich neoplastic cells from bulk tumor tissue, coring, and laser microdissection (LMD) sampling techniques have been employed. In this study, we assessed the protein and KRAS mutation changes associated with samples obtained by these enrichment techniques and evaluated the fraction of neoplastic cells in …

A Comparison Of Bioimpedance Analysis Vs. Dual X-Ray Absorptiometry For Body Composition Assessment In Postpartum Women And Non-Postpartum Controls, Valene Garr Barry, Samantha L Martin, Paula Chandler-Laney, Ebony B Carter, Camille S Worthington
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Postpartum fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) may be informative predictors of future disease risk among women; hence, there is growing use of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to quantify FFM and FM among postpartum women due to the quick, non-invasive, and inexpensive nature of BIA. Despite this, very few studies have examined BIA's performance, and it remains unclear as to whether specific BIA equations are needed for postpartum women. To explore these questions, we measured total body FFM and FM with a multi-frequency, segmental BIA, and dual-X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in (1) women at one and four months postpartum (

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Trained immunity is an innate immune memory response that is induced by a primary inflammatory stimulus that sensitizes monocytes and macrophages to a secondary pathogenic challenge, reprogramming the host response to infection and inflammatory disease. Dietary fatty acids can act as inflammatory stimuli, but it is unknown if they can act as the primary stimuli to induce trained immunity. Here we find mice fed a diet enriched exclusively in saturated fatty acids (ketogenic diet; KD) confer a hyper-inflammatory response to systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and increased mortality, independent of diet-induced microbiome and hyperglycemia. We find KD alters the composition of the …

Time Management Experiences Among Adult Learners In An Online Undergraduate Degree Program, Russell Lee Fox
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this case study was to discover the time management experiences of adult learners in an online undergraduate degree program at a mid-sized, Midwestern private university. The theory guiding this study was Tourangbam’s (2011) time equity theory as it emphasized the connection between time management and both productivity and life satisfaction. Data was collected through online (Zoom) interviews, a virtual (Zoom) focus group, and photovoice (Wang & Burris, 1992) exercise in which participants took photographs that represented their priorities, obligations, and time-wasters, which were the three categories of time management identified in time equity theory (Tourangbam, 2011). Data …

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the lived experience of personnel adversely impacted by toxic leadership. This topic is important to study because the harassment, bullying, and narcissistic behavior exhibited by toxic leaders and negative environments have severe adverse implications for personnel, such as reduced accomplishments, mental health, lack of trust, and overall wellbeing. In order to further understand the phenomenon, the following research questions guided the study: (a) What is the lived experience of personnel adversely impacted by toxic leadership? (b) How were the personnel impacted by the change in the culture and environment? (c) …
Restoration Jewish Evangelism: A Dispensational Paradigm For Jewish Evangelism, Justin R. Woods
Restoration Jewish Evangelism: A Dispensational Paradigm For Jewish Evangelism, Justin R. Woods
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Local Jewish populations within proximity of U.S. churches are perishing in their need to hear the Christian gospel. Obstacles to Jewish evangelism have festered through the centuries. Modern scholarship has held culpable the supersessionist traditions from the early church fathers and carried over to the present day. Dispensational pastors and scholars have acted on the front lines to correct this grievance. Restoration Jewish Evangelism (RJE) supplies a template of Jewish evangelism centered on a dispensational view of Romans 9—11. The goal of this project includes strengthening the parishioners’ situational awareness and self-confidence to engage in sharing the gospel of the …

Grant Us Wisdom, Grant Us Courage For The Facing Of Change Leadership: A Case Study Of The Change Leadership Of J. Gresham Machen, Peter Raymond Sniffin
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Ministry leaders are ill-prepared to execute the inevitable requirement of change leadership. As a result of this leadership shortcoming, necessary change efforts are either avoided or fail. During the Fundamentalist and Modernist Controversy of the early 20th Century, J. Gresham Machen provided change leadership in response to doctrinal error in the church that transformed his ministry context and Presbyterianism in the United States as it was then structured. In Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians, Paul also exercised leadership to drive change away from doctrinal error in the church. A case study examining Machen’s change leadership in light of Paul’s example …

The study presents a novel approach to objectively assessing the upper-extremity motor symptoms in spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) using data collected via a wearable sensor worn on the patient’s wrist during upper-extremity tasks associated with the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA). First, we developed an algorithm for detecting/extracting the cycles of the finger-to-nose test (FNT). We extracted multiple features from the detected cycles and identified features and parameters correlated with the SARA scores. Additionally, we developed models to predict the severity of symptoms based on the FNT. The proposed technique was validated on a dataset comprising the seventeen (n …

Ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) are the most abundant cellular RNAs, and their synthesis from rDNA repeats by RNA polymerase I accounts for the bulk of all transcription. Despite substantial variation in rRNA transcription rates across cell types, little is known about cell-type-specific factors that bind rDNA and regulate rRNA transcription to meet tissue-specific needs. Using hematopoiesis as a model system, we mapped about 2,200 ChIP-seq datasets for 250 transcription factors (TFs) and chromatin proteins to human and mouse rDNA and identified robust binding of multiple TF families to canonical TF motifs on rDNA. Using a 47S-FISH-Flow assay developed for nascent rRNA …

Effect Of Fine Aggregate And Pva Fiber Content On The Properties Of Metakaolin-Based Engineered Geopolymer Composites, Ruwa Abufarsakh
LSU Master's Theses
The mechanical and physical properties of novel metakaolin (MK) based Engineered Geopolymer Composites (EGCs) consisting of locally available river sand (RS) or manufactured microsilica sand (MS) reinforced with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber were studied. Plain geopolymer (GP) binder, GP mortars, and fiber-reinforced composites were also studied. Aspects of the material composition that were investigated in this study include binder composition, aggregate type, and PVA fiber content. Per the compressive strength results, GP mortars presented greater compressive strength than GP binder where the GP mortars manufactured with lower water to solids ratio exhibited greater compressive strengths. Furthermore, the incorporation of PVA …

Webinar: Community Transportation Academies: Rethinking Effective Community Engagement Around Transportation Decision-Making, Nathan Mcneil, Keith Bartholomew, Andrea Olson, Laura Hanson, Thuy Tu
TREC Webinar Series
This webinar will introduce you to the concept of the Community Transportation Academy (CTA), a model which has been operating in Portland for over 30 years in the form of the Portland Traffic and Transportation (PTT) class. Now catching on in other cities, the project team recently implemented the Wasatch Transportation Academy (WTA) in Salt Lake City. The presenters also include key stakeholders (and guest lecturers) in the WTA, and the PTT instructor. The presentation will include discussions about why CTAs can be good for both community members and transportation agencies/practitioners, and how you can bring a CTA to your …
