The management of human-shark interactions can benefit from the implementation of effective shark hazard mitigation measures. A Shark-Management-Alert-in-Real-Time (SMART) drumline trial in the Capes region of Western Australia was instigated after several serious incidents involving surfers and white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias). The project aimed to determine whether white sharks (target species), which were relocated after capture, remained offshore using satellite and acoustic tagging. Over a 27-month period, 352 fish were caught, 55% of which comprised tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier). Ninety-one percent of animals were released alive in good condition. Only two white sharks were caught; both were relocated ≥ 1 …

A numerical lifting-line method (implemented in an open-source software package) is presented which can accurately estimate the aerodynamics of wings with arbitrary sweep, dihedral, and twist. Previous numerical lifting-line methods have suffered from grid convergence challenges and limitations in accurately modeling the effects of sweep, or have relied on empirical relations for swept-wing parameters and have been limited in their application to typical wing geometries. This work presents novel improvements in accuracy, flexibility, and speed for complex geometries over previous methods. In the current work, thin-airfoil theory is used to correct section lift coefficients for sweep, providing a more general …

Long Range Correlation Of Molecular Orientation And Vibration In Liquid Cdcl3, David P. Shelton
Long Range Correlation Of Molecular Orientation And Vibration In Liquid Cdcl3, David P. Shelton
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research
The polarization dependence of hyper-Rayleigh second harmonic light scattering (SHS) and hyper-Raman light scattering (HRS) measured for liquid CDCl3 show the effect of long-range correlation of molecular orientation and vibration. HRS from the ν1, ν4, and ν5 vibration modes is polarized transverse to the scattering wavevector, whereas HRS from the ν2, ν3, and ν6 vibration modes and SHS from the ν0 orientation mode all show longitudinal polarization. The transverse polarized HRS is accounted for by long range vibration correlation due to dipole–dipole interaction for molecules at 20–400 nm …

Half of New Hampshire residents think local teachers are underpaid and bipartisan pluralities support raising their pay even if their local school budget increased. Most residents think that parents or guardians should have primary responsibility for sexual education of children but that the local school should also play a role. Four in ten Granite Staters believe critical race theory is being taught at least to some degree in primary schools, while a large percentage believe it is taught in colleges and universities in the state. Only one-third of state residents support the 2021 law banning the teaching of "divisive concepts" …

Aluminum (Al) is a metallic toxicant at high concentrations following natural or unnatural exposures. Dietary intake is considered as the main source of aluminum exposure in children. We used data from 366 typically developing (TD) children (ages 2−8 years) who participated as controls in an age- and sex-matched case−control study in Jamaica. We investigated additive and interactive associations among environmental factors and children’s genotypes for glutathione S-transferase (GST) genes (GSTT1, GSTM1, GSTP1), in relation to having a detectable blood aluminum concentration (BAlC) of >5.0 μg/L, using multivariable logistic regression models. Findings from interactive models revealed that the odds of having …

Exposure to early life adversity has long term consequences on cognitive function. Most research has focused on understanding components of early life adversities that contribute to later risk, including poverty, trauma, maltreatment, and neglect. Whereas these factors, in the aggregate, explain a significant proportion of emotional and cognitive problems, there are serious gaps in our ability to identify potential mechanisms by which early life adversities might promote vulnerability or resilience. Here we discuss early life exposure to unpredictable signals from the caretaker as an understudied type of adversity that is amenable to prevention and intervention. We employ a translational approach …
