We have mapped and constrained the timing of tectonically deformed uplifted Late Quaternary palaeoshorelines in the Messina Strait, southern Italy, an area above a subduction zone containing active normal faults. The palaeoshorelines are preserved from up to thirteen Late Quaternary sea-level highstands, providing a record of the deformation over this timescale (~500 ka) for the Messina-Taormina Fault, the Reggio Calabria Fault and the Armo Fault. The palaeoshorelines reveal spatial patterns of uplift through time along the strike of these normal faults, and, given the across strike arrangement of the faults, also reveal how the contribution of each fault to the …

Evaluating The Performance Of The ‘Seabin’ – A Fixed Point Mechanical Litter Removal Device For Sheltered Waters, Florence N.F. Parker-Jurd, Natalie S. Smith, Liam Gibson, Sohvi Nuojua, Richard C. Thompson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Mechanical interventions are increasingly suggested as a means of removing plastic litter from aquatic environments; their performance is rarely evaluated, but such information is critical to inform policy interventions such as those required to facilitate UNEA 5.2. The Seabin, a fixed-point device designed to remove floating litter in sheltered waters was examined in an urban tidal marina (Southwest UK). It captured on average 58 litter items/day; chiefly plastic pellets, polystyrene balls and plastic fragments. It also captured one marine organism for every 3.6 items of litter, or 13 organisms/day, half of which were dead upon retrieval. The rate of litter …

The Role Of Mindfulness Training In Sustaining Weight Reduction: Retrospective Cohort Analysis, P Hanson, M Lange, D Oduro-Donkor, E Shuttlewood, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Background Psychological stress has an established bi-directional relationship with obesity. Mindfulness techniques reduce stress and improve eating behaviours, but their long-term impact remains untested. CALMPOD (Compassionate Approach to Living Mindfully for Prevention of Disease) is a psychoeducational mindfulness-based course evidenced to improve eating patterns across a 6-month period, possibly by reducing stress. However, no long-term evaluation of impact exists. Aims This study retrospectively evaluates 2-year outcomes of CALMPOD on patient engagement, weight and metabolic markers. Method All adults with a body mass index >35 kg/m2 attending an UK obesity service during 2016–2020 were offered CALMPOD. Those who refused CALMPOD were …
Artificial Reefs In The Arabian Gulf: Benefits, Challenges And Recommendations For Policy-Makers, A Bartholomew, Ja Burt, Lb Firth
Artificial Reefs In The Arabian Gulf: Benefits, Challenges And Recommendations For Policy-Makers, A Bartholomew, Ja Burt, Lb Firth
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Artificial reef (AR) deployment has increased dramatically in the Arabian / Persian Gulf in recent years, and will likely continue as Gulf nations continue to develop their coastlines and expand fisheries. Unfortunately, there is little publicly-available information about AR programs in the Gulf, including information about management goals and program success. ARs can provide economic, social and ecological benefits, but they also have underappreciated risks associated with them. Benefits include increasing short-term catch rates for fisheries, increasing tourism, enhancing and protecting biodiversity and providing ecological services. Risks include exacerbating regional overfishing in the long-term, facilitating the spread of invasive species, …

Background: Stress fractures occur to the musculoskeletal system on a frequent basis. This injury in the foot and ankle is relatively benign and treated conservatively with a walking boot or postoperative shoe. The use of an injectable bone graft has shown success with bone marrow edema and osteoarthritis in the knee, thus the same effects would be seen worthy of stress fractures relating to other parts of the body such as the foot and ankle. The foot and ankle sustains a high level of stress and is prone to stress fractures. This retrospective analysis documents several cases of stress fractures …

Mitofusin (MFN) 1 and MFN2 are dynamin GTPase family mitochondrial proteins that mediate mitochondrial fusion requiring MFN conformational shifts, formation of macromolecular complexes on and between mitochondria, and GTP hydrolysis. Damaging MFN2 mutations cause an untreatable, largely pediatric progressive peripheral neuropathy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease type 2A. We used small molecule allosteric mitofusin activators that promote MFN conformations favoring fusion to interrogate the effects of MFN2 conformation and GTPase activity on MFN2-mediated mitochondrial fusion and motility in vitro. We translated these findings in vivo by defining dose-dependent pharmacodynamic and disease-modifying effects of mitofusin activators in murine CMT2A. MFN2 catalytic GTPase activity …

Understanding The Role Of Activated Sludge In Oxygen Transfer: Effects Of Sludge Settleability, Solids Retention Time, And Nitrification Reaction, Ken Campbell, Jianmin Wang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The current understanding on the oxygen transfer in activated sludge process is primarily developed based on two-phase systems, focusing only on oxygen transfer from air to water. However, this research demonstrates that activated sludge particles significantly impact oxygen transfer from air all the way to the microorganisms. Three bench-scale complete-mix activated sludge reactors, operated under the same influent loading and dissolved oxygen level but different solids retention times (SRTs), were used to develop oxygen transfer performance data as effects of different sludge property parameters. These reactors were also operated under batch modes to further validate the effect of nitrification reaction …

BACKGROUND: Virus mitigation measures enacted early in the coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic suppressed common respiratory viruses and reduced the number of obstructive lung disease exacerbations. However, many localities began to ease these precautions in the year 2021, leading to a resurgence of non-COVID viruses. How asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) activity responded to this upswing in viral abundance is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to examine how viral resurgence during the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions affected asthma and COPD exacerbations.
METHODS: We analyzed electronic medical records for emergency department (ED) respiratory virus positivity, asthma visits, and …

Amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) and phosphorylated tau (pTau) levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) reflect core features of the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) more directly than clinical diagnosis. Initiated by the European Alzheimer & Dementia Biobank (EADB), the largest collaborative effort on genetics underlying CSF biomarkers was established, including 31 cohorts with a total of 13,116 individuals (discovery n = 8074; replication n = 5042 individuals). Besides the APOE locus, novel associations with two other well-established AD risk loci were observed; CR1 was shown a locus for Aβ42 and BIN1 for pTau. GMNC and C16orf95 were further identified as loci for …

Wetting Of Paper Towels: A Method To Determine The Two-Dimensional Absorption Capacity, Hossein Abedsoltan
Wetting Of Paper Towels: A Method To Determine The Two-Dimensional Absorption Capacity, Hossein Abedsoltan
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study proposes a method to determine the two-dimensional absorption capacity of paper towels. Individual plies were tested to minimize the effects of transverse wicking on wetting. The method involves arbitrary point source injection of liquid into the towel surface while recording microscopic images of the wetted areas. The samples were selected from the main manufacturing processes: conventional wet pressing and through-air drying. Wetting graphs that illustrate the dynamic and static wetting behaviors were generated. The driving force was found to have a negligible effect on the maximum wetted area. The maximum wetted area and the paper grammage were used …

BACKGROUND: Low-grade gliomas (LGGs) occurring in children can result in many different neurologic complications, including seizures. MEK inhibitors are increasingly being used to treat LGG, but their effect on associated neurologic symptoms has not been established.
RESULTS: Here, we report a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), medically refractory epilepsy (MRE), and an extensive optic pathway glioma (OPG) who developed dose-dependent seizure control while being treated with selumetinib. Seizure frequency rebounded after dose reduction for cardiac toxicity, then improved, and finally ceased after restarting full dosing, allowing confidence in the cause of improvement.
CONCLUSION: Selumetinib may have promise in epilepsy …

Severe mental illnesses (SMI), including major depressive (MDD), bipolar (BD), and schizophrenia spectrum (SSD) disorders have multifactorial risk factors and capturing their complex etiopathophysiology in an individual remains challenging. Regional vulnerability index (RVI) was used to measure individual's brain-wide similarity to the expected SMI patterns derived from meta-analytical studies. It is analogous to polygenic risk scores (PRS) that measure individual's similarity to genome-wide patterns in SMI. We hypothesized that RVI is an intermediary phenotype between genome and symptoms and is sensitive to both genetic and environmental risks for SMI. UK Biobank sample of N = 17,053/19,265 M/F (age = 64.8 …

The safety profile of the novel oral JAK2/IRAK1 inhibitor pacritinib in patients with cytopenic myelofibrosis was described in the Phase 2 PAC203 and Phase 3 PERSIST-2 studies. To account for longer treatment durations on the pacritinib arms compared to best available therapy (BAT), we present a risk-adjusted safety analysis of event rates accounting for different time on treatment. While the rate of overall events was higher on pacritinib compared to BAT, the rate of fatal events was lower, and there was no excess in bleeding, cardiac events, secondary malignancy, or thrombosis on pacritinib, including in patients with severe thrombocytopenia.

Development Of All-Fiber Pulsed Lasers Using Bismuth- And Thulium- Doped Fiber Saturable Absorber / Pei Zhang, Zhang Pei
Student Works (2020-2029)
Due to the abundant advantages of low lasing threshold, simple configuration, high efficiency, long-time stability and low cost, all-fiber pulsed fiber lasers have attracted plentiful attentions in various applications such as materials processing, fast diagnosis, nonlinear optics, biomedicine, communication etc. Compared with other saturable absorber (SA), using the doped fiber saturable absorber (DFSA) is an effective and efficient method to realize all-fiber pulsed lasers. In this thesis, bismuth-doped fiber (BDF) and thulium-doped fiber (TDF) with different lengths are used to construct DFSAs. All DFSAs are characterized to ensure the linear and nonlinear absorption before being inserted into the typical ring …

Nuclear mechanotransduction is a growing field with exciting implications for the regulation of gene expression and cellular function. Mechanical signals may be transduced to the nuclear interior biochemically or physically through connections between the cell surface and chromatin. To define mechanical stresses upon the nucleus in physiological settings, we generated transgenic mouse strains that harbour FRET-based tension sensors or control constructs in the outer and inner aspects of the nuclear envelope. Human fetal brains show regionally different temporal patterns of sulcal emergence following a regular timeline, which may be associated with spatiotemporal patterns of gene expression among cortical regions. This study aims to quantify the timing of sulcal emergence and its temporal variability across typically developing fetuses by fitting a logistic curve to presence or absence of sulcus. We found that the sulcal emergence started from the central to the temporo-parieto-occipital lobes and frontal lobe, and the temporal variability of emergence in most of the sulci was similar between 1 and 2 weeks. Small variability (< 1 week) was found in the left central and postcentral sulci and larger variability (>2 weeks) was shown in …

Introduction:
The apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype is the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease. However, its effect on lipid metabolic pathways, and their mediating effect on disease risk, is poorly understood.
Methods:
We performed lipidomic analysis on three independent cohorts (the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle [AIBL] flagship study, n = 1087; the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative [ADNI] 1 study, n = 819; and the Busselton Health Study [BHS], n = 4384), and we defined associations between APOE ε2 and ε4 and 569 plasma/serum lipid species. Mediation analysis defined the proportion of the treatment effect of the APOE …
