The Importance Of Radiologic Imaging Modalities In Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease, Jorge Nadal Bosch, Javier Malcolm, Mario Moya, Michael Menowsky, Paul Dominici
School of Medicine Publications
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common disorder that occurs in approximately one in 1000 live births. Patients may be asymptomatic or present with symptoms such as hypertension, hematuria, proteinuria, or renal function impairment. It can present with extra renal complications like cerebral aneurysms, hepatic and pancreatic cysts, infected cysts, cardiac valve disease, colonic diverticula, abdominal wall and inguinal hernia, and seminal vesicle cyst. Imaging studies such as ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provide vital information regarding the diagnosis of the disease, monitoring of the progression of the disease, and detection of complications …

Background:
The role of pulse pressure (PP) ‘widening’ at older and younger age as a cardiovascular risk factor is still controversial. Mean PP, as determined from repeated blood pressure (BP) readings, can be expressed as a sum of two components: ‘elastic PP’ (elPP) and ‘stiffening PP’ (stPP) associated, respectively, with stiffness at the diastole and its relative change during the systole. We investigated the association of 24-h ambulatory PP, elPP, and stPP (‘PP variables’) with mortality and composite cardiovascular events in different age classes.
Method:
Longitudinal population-based cohort study of adults with baseline observations that included 24-h ambulatory BP. Age …

BACKGROUND: Threatened preterm birth is the most common reason for antepartum hospitalization in the United States, accounting for approximately 50% of these admissions. However, fewer than 10% of patients with inpatient evaluation for signs or symptoms of preterm labor ultimately deliver before term.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to generate predictive models to assess the risk of preterm delivery and time to delivery based on clinical signs and symptoms of patients evaluated in our institution for preterm labor concerns.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of singleton pregnancies evaluated for signs and/or symptoms of preterm labor, including contractions, abdominal …
The Romantic Author As Compelled Speaker, Sonya G. Bonneau
The Romantic Author As Compelled Speaker, Sonya G. Bonneau
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The romantic author trope has been extensively criticized in the copyright context, yet it threatens to emerge as a new pillar of First Amendment compelled speech jurisprudence. Justice Thomas’s concurring opinion in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission exemplifies the trope’s rhetorical power, and the costs of that approach. Casting the baker as an artist, Justice Thomas finds that creating custom wedding cakes was speech, and that applying a public accommodations law to require service to a same-sex couple triggered strict scrutiny review. This is an extraordinary result. Although the Court never adjudicated the compelled speech claim, it will …

We propose a multi-scale hybridized topic modeling method to find hidden topics from transcribed interviews more accurately and efficiently than traditional topic modeling methods. Our multi-scale hybridized topic modeling method (MSHTM) approaches data at different scales and performs topic modeling in a hierarchical way utilizing first a classical method, Nonnegative Matrix Factorization, and then a transformer-based method, BERTopic. It harnesses the strengths of both NMF and BERTopic. Our method can help researchers and the public better extract and interpret the interview information. Additionally, it provides insights for new indexing systems based on the topic level. We then deploy our method …

General Rogue Wave Solutions To The Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation, Yasuhiro Ohta, Bao-Feng Feng
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In the present paper, we attempt to construct both the general rogue wave solutions to the fully discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (fd-NLS) equation via the KP-Toda reduction method. First, we deduce the general breather solution of the fd-NLS equation starting from a pair of bilinear equations. We then derive the general rogue wave solution by taking a limit to the breather solution.

Study Of Flow Of Buongiorno Nanofluid In A Conical Gap Between A Cone And A Disk, Mahanthesh Basavarajappa, Dambaru Bhatta
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
The cone–disk apparatus consists of a cone that touches the disk at its apex and is used in medical evices, viscosimeters, conical diffusers, etc. Theoretically, a three-dimensional flow of a nanofluid in a conical gap of a cone–disk apparatus is studied for four different physical configurations. Buongiorno nanofluid model, consisting of thermophoresis and Brownian diffusion mechanisms, is used to describe the convective heat transport of the nanofluid. The continuity equation, the Navier–Stokes momentum equation, the heat equation, and the conservation of nanoparticle volume fraction equation constitute the governing system for the flow of nanofluids. The Lie group approach is used …

Background: Food is not equitably available. Deficiencies and generalizations limit national datasets, food security assessments, and interventions. Additional neighborhood level studies are needed to develop a scalable and transferable process to complement national and internationally comparative data sets with timely, granular, nuanced data. Participatory geographic information systems (PGIS) offer a means to address these issues by digitizing local knowledge.
Methods: The objectives of this study were two-fold: (i) identify granular locations missing from food source and risk datasets and (ii) examine the relation between the spatial, socio-economic, and agency contributors to food security. Twenty-nine subject matter experts from three cities …
Analyzing Business Research On The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act: Clusters, Gaps, And Future Directions, Richard A. Posthuma
Analyzing Business Research On The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act: Clusters, Gaps, And Future Directions, Richard A. Posthuma
American Business Review
This study comprehensively analyzed and summarized business-related research on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). Research on the FCPA is essential because sanctions for violations have grown substantially, increasing risks for multinational enterprises (MNEs). Recent fines exceeded $1 billion, and business executives were personally fined and imprisoned (Stanford Foreign Corrupt Practices Act Clearinghouse, 2021). Unfortunately, theory-based and empirically-validated business research has not kept pace with this increased risk. Performance mapping and science mapping pinpointed the most prolific academic fields, the most cited articles, and clusters of authors, journals, and keywords. Analyses identified gaps in the literature. Prior research focused on …

Can Gender And Major Explain College Students’ Performance In Business Statistics?, Waros Ngamsiriudom, Mitra L. Devkota, Mohan K. Menon
American Business Review
Recent discussions in education, industry, and government have focused on the need for growth and diversity in STEM fields. STEM education and practice directly contribute to the economic vitality of a nation and benefit its citizens. Yet, STEM education and employment growth seem lopsided concerning both gender and diversity. While researchers have studied various dimensions of this phenomenon, this paper seeks to add to the knowledge base by analyzing the effects of gender and college major on performance and attitudes in statistics-related courses. T-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple regression were used to investigate the effects of gender, major, …
Efficient Supply Chain Contracting With Loss-Averse Players In Presence Of Multiple Plausible Breaches, Arijit Mitra, Sumit Sarkar
Efficient Supply Chain Contracting With Loss-Averse Players In Presence Of Multiple Plausible Breaches, Arijit Mitra, Sumit Sarkar
American Business Review
The legal literature distinguishes between the liquidated damage and the penalty clauses in contracts, and holds that penalties designed for the prevention of breach are excessive compared to the liquidated damages. In an efficient supply chain contract, the penalty must satisfy the participation and incentive compatibility constraints of the signatories. Considering loss-averse players, we have calculated optimal penalties in a supply chain contract and compared those with the liquidated damages. Two possible breaches are considered – a breach in quality of the delivery and a breach in the process. In the absence of any penalty, a process breach reduces the …

The Impact Of Covid-19 Shocks On Business And Gdp Of Global Economy, Reza Gharoie Ahangar, Myungsup Kim
American Business Review
This study examines the relationship between COVID-19 shocks and GDP loss of different countries worldwide based on the seven scenarios of the epidemiological DSGE/CGE model of [McKibbin, W., & Fernando, R. (2020). The Global Macroeconomic Impacts of COVID-19: Seven Scenarios. Asian Economic Papers, 20(2): 1-30, MIT Press]. We implemented a panel data approach for 24 cross-sectional units with three periods and a general regression neural network. The economic and financial shocks consist of labor supply, equity risk premium, consumption demand, and government expenditure. The findings show that the consumption demand and equity risk premium shocks on GDP are more influential …
Institutional Distance And The Motivations To Springboard, Peter Zámborský, Zheng Joseph Yan
Institutional Distance And The Motivations To Springboard, Peter Zámborský, Zheng Joseph Yan
American Business Review
While institutional distance presents opportunities for development of the general theory of springboard MNEs, the direction of distance and its relationship to the motivations to springboard are largely ignored in the literature on emerging-market MNE (EMNE) internationalization. To fill the research gap, we develop a model of springboard motives, and incorporate institutional distance (including its direction) and ownership share as factors explaining them. Based on an empirical analysis of over 700 mergers and acquisitions (M&As) by EMNEs from 26 emerging economies in 2015–2017, we find that EMNEs tend to have capability-building springboard motives in cross-border M&A when they move down …
Is Honesty The Best Policy? Examining The Effect Of Product Safety Communication On Blame Attributions In Causal Chains, William G. Obenauer, Michael J. Kalsher
Is Honesty The Best Policy? Examining The Effect Of Product Safety Communication On Blame Attributions In Causal Chains, William G. Obenauer, Michael J. Kalsher
American Business Review
This paper extends research on attribution theory through three studies examining how the accuracy and explicitness of product safety information communicated to various entities within a causal chain influences blame attributions after an accident. Unlike prior research, we find consistent evidence that entities in the causal chain were able to limit blame attributions by communicating safety information that’s quality met or exceeded the quality of information available to that entity. Entities did not, however, benefit from providing more accurate information than what had been communicated to them by previous members of the causal chain. This insight suggests that the controllability …

In the recent upsurge in environmental concerns, business sustainability has become more prominent than ever. Organizations worldwide are expected to function sustainably, causing the least negative impact on the environment and promoting harmony among the firm, environment, and society. Most firms report their actions related to sustainability in corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports. This research aims to understand and analyze contemporary trends in CSR reports by Fortune 500 companies using text mining. It compares how the focus of sustainability reports varies across countries and industries along key dimensions of sustainability (i.e., environmental, economic, social, and government). Findings from the study …

Migration, The Quality Of Life, And Economic Opportunities In The U.S. Revisited: Impacts Of Round-Trip Work Commute Time And Rent Or Single-Family Housing Prices, Richard J. Cebula
American Business Review
Given the importance to businesses of having a better understanding of factors that influence migration, this study argues that there are two dimensions of the quality of life and economic opportunities that have largely been ignored in previously published studies of migration patterns in the U.S.: the impacts of (1) the costs of commuting between one’s residence and one’s place of employment and (2) apartment rent-levels and single-family housing price levels. It is hypothesized here that the greater the commute time between one’s prospective place of residence and one’s prospective place of employment, the greater the costs associated with in-migration …
Oil Price Volatility, Organization Capital, And Firm Performance, Javed Bin Kamal, Mabel D. Costa, Ahsan Habib
Oil Price Volatility, Organization Capital, And Firm Performance, Javed Bin Kamal, Mabel D. Costa, Ahsan Habib
American Business Review
We examine the relationship between oil price volatility and firm performance, and the moderating role of organization capital on this relationship. Using U.S. firm-level data during the period of 1986-2017, our analysis reveals several key findings. Consistent with the real option theory, we find that oil price volatility negatively affects firm performance. However, this adverse effect of oil price volatility is reduced for firms with high levels of organization capital. Interestingly, this moderating effect of organization capital is more pronounced for firms with large cash holdings. Overall, our findings substantiate the idea that firms with high levels of organization capital …

Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are designed as a real-time digital record to streamline distinctive and valuable patient information across multiple stakeholders in the healthcare delivery channel. The stakeholders include hospitals, healthcare providers and patients, as well as a myriad of third-party providers (i.e., insurance companies, Medicare). Academicians, practitioners and public policy makers are grappling with uneven experiences and empirical findings regarding the relationship between technology-enabled information sharing and the ensuing quality of healthcare outcomes. The most significant government-mandated technology is the implementation and adoption of EHR. The present research examines EHR through the lens of Resource Advantage Theory –– to …

Towards Scalable Spectral Clustering Via Spectrum-Preserving Sparsification, Yongyu Wang, Zhuo Feng
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Eigenvalue decomposition of Laplacian matrices for large nearest-neighbor (NN)graphs is the major computational bottleneck in spectral clustering (SC). To fundamentally address this computational challenge in SC, we propose a scalable spectral sparsification framework that enables to construct nearly-linear-sized ultra-sparse NN graphs with guaranteed preservation of key eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the original Laplacian. The proposed method is based on the latest theoretical results in spectral graph theory and thus can be applied to robustly handle general undirected graphs. By leveraging a nearly-linear time spectral graph topology sparsification phase and a subgraph scaling phase via stochastic gradient descent (SGD) iterations, our …

Stormwater runoff is a significant source of heavy metals, including cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni), which pose ecological and human health problems. Various filter media have been evaluated for heavy metal removal from stormwater via adsorption, most involving chemical- or energy-intensive processes. Aluminum-based drinking water treatment residuals (WTR), a non-hazardous byproduct of drinking water treatment, are an inexpensive sorbent for heavy metals. However, the low permeability of WTR is a problem and requires mixing with sand and carbon materials to improve flow; but such amendments also reduce its sorption capacity. To overcome this problem, a granulated WTR sorbent …

This study compares Mechatronics bachelor curricula at universities in the United States of America and German universities. Mechatronics education is relatively new in the United States, but has been common in Germany for over a decade. With the multidisciplinary nature of technologies required by the 4’th industrial revolution, a.k.a. Industry 4.0, composing an appropriate Mechatronics curriculum becomes a challenge and an opportunity. This paper studies how Mechatronics education can address the future needs of industry, while building on a specific university’s strengths and industry links. We have also analyzed the new undergraduate Mechatronics program at Michigan Technological University (MTU) and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Impact Assessment (IA) has been adopted worldwide typically to ensure the achievement of its goal(s), which might be one or more of sustainable development, environmental policy integration, and democratic governance. Researchers have developed and applied effectiveness frameworks in order to evaluate whether IA achieves its goal(s). The application of these frameworks often identifies some areas of ineffectiveness, and the frameworks are rarely transferable to other cases either within or across different jurisdictions, which makes national and international comparisons problematic. Context is frequently cited as a reason why ineffectiveness is identified in a case, and yet context is not clearly understood …

OBJECTIVE: Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) is one of the most commonly used organophosphorus flame retardants that may accumulate in the environment. However, its effects on human reproductive organs have not been well studied. We aimed to investigate the in vitro effects of TPHP in human Ishikawa endometrial cancer cells to elucidate how TPHP exposure disrupts intracellular signaling and cell proliferation in reproductive tissues.
METHODS: Human Ishikawa endometrial cancer cells were exposed to TPHP.
RESULTS: Exposure to TPHP elevated the levels of estrogen receptor (ER) α and progesterone receptor-B and reduced ER β in human Ishikawa endometrial cancer cells. TPHP stimulated phosphoinositide …

During the course of the 2015-2017 outbreak of Zika virus (ZIKV) in the Americas, the emerging virus was recognized as a congenital infection that could damage the developing brain. As the Latin American ZIKV outbreak advanced, the scientific and public health community questioned if this newly recognized neurotropic flavivirus could affect the developing brain of infants and young children infected after birth. We report here the study design, methods and the challenges and lessons learned from the rapid operationalization of a prospective natural history cohort study aimed at evaluating the potential neurological and neurodevelopmental effects of postnatal ZIKV infection in …

Isotretinoin is a potent vitamin A derivative that is used to treat acne. However, despite its utility in dermatologic care, it is also highly teratogenic and can cause severe life-threatening fetal abnormalities in the first trimester of pregnancy. As a result, existing regulations are stringent in order to prevent accidental pregnancies in women taking isotretinoin. In the unlikely case of an unintended pregnancy, while taking isotretinoin, a woman could terminate her pregnancy with an abortion. However, with the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade, we explore the consequences of this landmark United States Supreme Court ruling with special attention …
