Association Of A Green Tea Extract With Serum Immunoglobulin G Status And Neonatal Vitality In Newborn Dairy Calves, M. E. Reis, Melissa C. Cantor, C. M. M. Bittar, Joao H. C. Costa Nov 2022

Association Of A Green Tea Extract With Serum Immunoglobulin G Status And Neonatal Vitality In Newborn Dairy Calves, M. E. Reis, Melissa C. Cantor, C. M. M. Bittar, Joao H. C. Costa

Animal and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Poor vigor at birth has been associated with reduced IgG absorption from colostrum and a reduced vitality in neonatal dairy calves. Some natural compounds, such as green tea extract, may improve vitality in compromised calves. The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the potential of supplementing a green tea extract (15 mL) to calves to improve vigor and activity behavior for the first 72 h postnatal. Also, this study aimed to investigate the influence of green tea extract supplementation on calf serum IgG concentration and the apparent efficiency of absorption (AEA) of colostral IgG. Holstein calves (n …

A Retrieval Queueing Model With Feedback, Agassi Melikov, Srinivas Chakravarthy, Sevinc Aliyeva Nov 2022

A Retrieval Queueing Model With Feedback, Agassi Melikov, Srinivas Chakravarthy, Sevinc Aliyeva

Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Publications

A multi-server retrial queuing model with feedback is considered in this paper.Input flow of calls is modeled using a Markovian Arrival Process (M AP) and the service time is assumed to follow an exponential distribution. An arriving call enters into service should there be a free server. Otherwise, in accordance to Bernoulli trials, the call will enter into an infinite orbit (referred to as a retrial orbit) to retry along with other calls to get into service or will leave the system forever. After obtaining a service each call, independent of the others, will either enter into a finite orbit …

Louis Pasteur Signature Saying: Science Brings Men Closer To God Bicentenary Year: 200 Years After His Birth, Alan L. Gillen, Justin A. Ambrose Nov 2022

Louis Pasteur Signature Saying: Science Brings Men Closer To God Bicentenary Year: 200 Years After His Birth, Alan L. Gillen, Justin A. Ambrose

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This year (2022) marks the bicentenary birth (December 27, 1822) of Louis Pasteur. He has a global reputation. His contributions can be seen in our homes, in the "pasteurized" products derived from one of his discoveries and in disease prevention. It was in his discovery of gently heating beverages and food for what we today call pasteurization that he first said: “Man's first look at the universe discovers only variety, diversity, multiplicity of phenomena. Let this gaze be enlightened by science — by science which brings man closer to God — and simplicity and unity shine everywhere.” Louis Pasteur (Vallery-Radot, …

The Consequential Role Of Aesthetics In Forest Fuels Reduction Propensities: Diverse Landowners’ Attitudes And Responses To Project Types, Risks, Costs, And Habitat Benefits, Robert G. Ribe, Max Nielsen-Pincus, Chris Enright, Bart R. Johnson, David Hulse Nov 2022

The Consequential Role Of Aesthetics In Forest Fuels Reduction Propensities: Diverse Landowners’ Attitudes And Responses To Project Types, Risks, Costs, And Habitat Benefits, Robert G. Ribe, Max Nielsen-Pincus, Chris Enright, Bart R. Johnson, David Hulse

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Private landowners in the southern Willamette Valley of Oregon, USA were surveyed. The survey queried probabilities of implementing specific fuels reduction projects in extensive areas of specific forest types on their property. The projects were described in relation to the beginning and target forest types, the actions required, costs, and long-term maintenance. Forest types were first rated for scenic beauty and informed levels of wildfire risk reduction, scarce habitat production, and associated property rights risks. Propensities to perform each fuels reduction project were then obtained. These were adversely affected by disbelief in heightened wildfire risks or climate change, higher project …

The Improvised Implementation Of Executive Agreements, Kathleen Claussen Nov 2022

The Improvised Implementation Of Executive Agreements, Kathleen Claussen

Articles

Implementation is at the core of lawmaking in our divided government. A rich literature covers the waterfront with respect to agencies' implementation of legislative mandates, and another equally robust line of scholarship considers Congress's implementation of treaties. Missing from those discussions, however, is another area of implementation central to U. S. foreign relations: the implementation of transnational regulatory agreements.

This Article examines how federal agencies have harnessed far-reaching discretion from Congress on whether and how to implement thousands of international agreements. Agencies regularly implement agreements by relying on a self-developed menu of options, much like they do in the domestic …

A Guided Chatbot Learning Experience In The Science Classroom, Jennifer Davis Nov 2022

A Guided Chatbot Learning Experience In The Science Classroom, Jennifer Davis

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

This dissertation describes a practitioner’s design-based development of a prototype chatbot to guide students in learning biological concepts of genetic mutations and protein synthesis. This chatbot’s architecture provides learning activities, feedback, and support throughout a series of short, connected lessons. The chatbot is designed to scaffold learners through a predict, observe, explain model of inquiry learning. It utilizes real-world phenomena to lead students through biology core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. Results of prototype testing include survey results in support of the proof of concept among both students and teachers, as well as accuracy measurements of chatbot …

Due Process Alignment In Mass Restructurings, Sergio J. Campos, Samir D. Parikh Nov 2022

Due Process Alignment In Mass Restructurings, Sergio J. Campos, Samir D. Parikh

Articles

Mass tort defendants have recently begun exiting multidistrict litigation by filing for bankruptcy. This new strategy ushers defendants into a far more hospitable forum that offers accelerated resolution of all state and federal claims held by both current and future victims.

Bankruptcy's structural, procedural, and substantive benefits also provide defendants with unique optionality. Bankruptcy's resolution promise is alluring, but the process relies on a very large assumption: that future victims can be compelled to relinquish property rights in their cause of action against the corporate defendant and others without consent or notice. Bankruptcy builds an entire resolution structure on the …

Does Business Strategy Affect Dividend Payout Policies?, Akinloye Akindayomi, Md Ruhul Amin Nov 2022

Does Business Strategy Affect Dividend Payout Policies?, Akinloye Akindayomi, Md Ruhul Amin

School of Accountancy Faculty Publications

This study examines the relation between a firm's business strategy and its dividend payout policies. Using a comprehensive measure of business strategy based on Miles and Snow's (1978, 2003) theoretical framework, we find that a firm's business strategy affects its dividend payout policies. Specifically, we document that firms following an innovation-oriented business strategy (PROSPECTORS) are less likely to pay, initiate, and increase dividends than those following a cost-effective business strategy (DEFENDERS). We also identify operating cash flow volatility and financial covenant constraints as two potential mechanisms through which innovation-oriented business strategy influences dividend payout policies. The …

Reclaiming Establishment: Identity And The ‘Religious Equality Problem’, Faraz Sanei Nov 2022

Reclaiming Establishment: Identity And The ‘Religious Equality Problem’, Faraz Sanei

Law Faculty Scholarship

Since at least 2017, the Court has implicitly recognized a right of equal access to generally available public benefits based on the beneficiary's religious identity or status. In Carson v. Makin (2022), the Court went a step further and, for the first time, concluded that the “status-use distinction lacks a meaningful application” in both theory and practice. It then held that restrictions on the use of public benefits for sacral purposes amount to religious discrimination because they impose substantial burdens on free exercise rights. Carson's holding, and the rationale underlying it, contravene settled case law and effectively gut the Establishment …

It’S All Relative: Changes In Teachers’ Knowledge And Instruction During Covid-19, Daniel Mourlam, Daniel Decino, Steven R. Chesnut, Gabrielle Strouse, Ryan Los, Lisa Newland

School of Education Faculty Publications

In this convergent-parallel mixed-methods study, we explored the effect that teaching remotely during the first months of the pandemic had on teachers’ TPACK and how teachers leveraged their new and existing knowledge to facilitate remote instruction. Survey results indicated that teachers’ self-reported knowledge decreased across multiple TPACK subdomains, which is likely an indicator of teachers’ recalibration of their knowledge as they experienced a new instructional context. Findings from semi-structured interviews indicated that although instruction narrowed at times when teachers struggled to enact their knowledge in less-than-ideal circumstances, teachers were often able to successfully facilitate remote instruction.

Representing Women's Displacement From The Margins In Liberal Italy: Vittorio Corcos's Annunciazione (1904) And Sogni, Giordana Poggiolo-Kaftan Nov 2022

Representing Women's Displacement From The Margins In Liberal Italy: Vittorio Corcos's Annunciazione (1904) And Sogni, Giordana Poggiolo-Kaftan

Italian Languages and Literature

This article focuses on the intersections between recently politically emancipated Jewish painter Corcos and his representations of women in Liberal Italy in the paintings Annunciazione (1904) and Sogni (1896). In their subalternity, both Corcos and women inhabited a space of ‘in-betweenness’. Corcos lived and worked ‘in-between’ Catholicism and Judaism, as the painting Annunciazione demonstrates. Women in Liberal Italy lived ‘in-between’ the centre of the nation, as mothers of its children, and at the margins of it as individuals without political agency. Thus, the article highlights how Corcos’s diasporic identity is not dissimilar from that of women’s political condition as exiles …

Reconciling Corporate Interests With Broader Social Interests - Pursuit Of Corporate Interests Beyond Shareholder Primacy, Yong-Shik Lee Nov 2022

Reconciling Corporate Interests With Broader Social Interests - Pursuit Of Corporate Interests Beyond Shareholder Primacy, Yong-Shik Lee

William & Mary Business Law Review

A seminal case in corporate law, Dodge v. Ford Motor Co., set the cardinal principle that corporations must serve the interests of shareholders rather than the interests of employees, customers, or the community. This principle, referred to as “shareholder primacy,” has been considered a tenet of the fiduciary duty owed by corporate directors. Scholars have disagreed on the current legal status of shareholder primacy. This Article examines the controversy in light of the current state legislation and case law. Regardless of its current legal status, shareholder primacy has influenced corporate behavior and encouraged short-term profit-seeking behavior with significant social …

The Role Of Formal Policy To Promote Informed Consent Of Psychotropic Medications For Youth In Child Welfare Custody: A National Examination, Thomas I. Mackie, Ana J. Schaefer, John S. Palatucci, Laurel K. Leslie, Stephen Crystal, Michael Gusmano, Hannah E. Karpman Nov 2022

The Role Of Formal Policy To Promote Informed Consent Of Psychotropic Medications For Youth In Child Welfare Custody: A National Examination, Thomas I. Mackie, Ana J. Schaefer, John S. Palatucci, Laurel K. Leslie, Stephen Crystal, Michael Gusmano, Hannah E. Karpman

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

Active participation of youth and surrogate decision-makers in providing informed consent and assent for mental health treatment is critical. However, the procedural elements of an informed consent process, particularly for youth in child welfare custody, are not well defined. Given calls for psychotropic medication oversight for youth in child welfare custody, this study proposes a taxonomy for the procedural elements of informed consent policies based upon formal and informal child welfare policies and then examines whether enacted state formal policies across the United States endorsed these elements. A sequential multi-method study design included: (1) semi-structured interviews with key informants (n …
