Deciphering Surrealism And Its Impact On Global Cinema, Sunayan Bhattacharjee Dr.
Deciphering Surrealism And Its Impact On Global Cinema, Sunayan Bhattacharjee Dr.
Arts and Humanities Collection
Surrealism, as a dominant avant-garde cultural movement, sprang up in the 1920s and became quite popular in the next few decades. It juxtaposed the seemingly contradictory conditions of dreams and reality into an alternate reality. The movement was initially depicted through novel paintings and writings. During the initial years of the movement, artists expressed themselves through illogical and shocking images, either visual or written, that constituted morphed and modified versions of everyday objects. There was an innate effort at letting the unconscious express itself. The concerned works were beset with multiple elements of surprise, non sequitur, and bizarre juxtapositions. The …

Community-Level Phylogenetic Diversity Does Not Differ Between Rare And Common Lineages Across Tallgrass Prairies In The Northern Great Plains, Sarah A. Herzog, Maribeth Latvis
Native Plant Focused Publications
Niche differentiation has served as one explanation for species coexistence, and phylogenetic relatedness provides a means to approximate how ecologically similar species are to each other. To explore the contribution of rare species to community phylogenetic diversity, we sampled 21 plant communities across the Prairie Coteau ecoregion, an area of high conservation concern. We used breakpoint analysis through the iterative addition of less abundant species to the phylogenetic tree for each community to assess the contribution of rare species to community phylogenetic diversity. We also quantify the phylogenetic signal of abundance using Blomberg's K statistic and calculated the phylogenetic similarity …

My current work deals with the preparation and characterization of nanocomposites for effluent treatment applications. The expertise lies on the preparation of carbonaceous nanocomposites including graphitic materials. The prepared materials are characterized thoroughly by different methods like FE-SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XRD, VSM, surface area and porosity. The composite materials are used for the removal of conventional and emerging contaminants like antibiotics, pesticide residues, endocrine disruptors etc. In addition to the batch studies, fabrication of microcolumns to aid the scale-up of the process is also carried out. I have published 14 research publications with around 1000 citations and h-index of 11. …

The fast growth in Internet-of-Things (IoT) based applications, has increased the number of end-devices communicating over the Internet. The end devices are made with fewer resources and are low battery-powered. These resource-constrained devices are exposed to various security and privacy concerns over publicly available Internet communication. Thus, it becomes essential to provide lightweight security solutions to safeguard data and user privacy. Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) can be used to generate the digital signature and also encrypt the data. The method can be evaluated on a real-time testbed deployed using Raspberry Pi3 devices and every message transmitted is subjected to ECC. …

Unplanned islanding of microgrids is a major hindrance in providing continuous power supply to the critical loads. The detection of these islanding instants needs to be very fast so that the distributed generators (DG) are able to take control actions in minimum time. Due to high quality data at a rapid rate, micro phasor measurement unit (μ-PMU) are becoming widely popular in distribution system and micro grids. These μ-PMUs can be leveraged for island detection. However, the working of μ-PMU is hugely dependent on communication network for data transmission which is prone to cyber-attacks. In view of the above facts, …

A low cost prescreening tool for early diagnosis of osteoporosis using metacarpal radiogrammetry and texture analysis is developed and validated using sample data of Indian and Swiss population. Third metacarpal bone shaft and distal radius are automatically segmented from hand and wrist radiographs using marker-controlled watershed segmentation and intensity profile. Significant features are selected using statistical analysis and trained using various classifiers to classify healthy subjects and those with low bone mass. The accuracy of the developed prescreening tool can be further improved by using deep learning techniques in combination with handcrafted texture features.

Earthquake causes a huge loss of life and property compared to other natural disasters. Almost 75% of the casualties due to earthquake were caused due to the collapse of the building and the substantial portion was from the collapse of the unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings. However, masonry is still more popular than other construction materials due to its lower cost and availability of material, and construction of URM does not need any technical rigor. The extent of vulnerability in masonry structures is high due to its brittle nature of the failure. Primarily, URM building is designed to withstand vertical loads, …

Automated crowd behavior analysis and monitoring is a challenging task due to the unpredictable nature of the crowd, making it an open problem. Within this domain, we are focusing on two research problems which deal with low to mid-level analysis of crowd videos. The first problem focuses on how to effectively utilize the readily available compressed motion vector information in an input crowd video to model the motion of the crowd and perform crowd behavior analysis in varying densities of crowds. For this purpose, we consider a mid-level crowd scene analysis task called as motion pattern segmentation. The second research …

Contemporary organizations are continually exposed to profound uncertainty and novelty. The collective mindfulness of organizational members facilitates sensing and interpretation of such environmental changes to effectively respond, adapt, and evolve. Collective mindfulness is a capability that enables organizational members to be alert to their context while continuously learning and ‘thinking on their feet’.
Despite the growing popularity of the concept since its inception around three decades ago, research on collective mindfulness nevertheless remains nascent. Several research opportunities and gaps have been identified, but inadequately addressed. For instance, much extant research on collective mindfulness has focused on High-Reliability Organizations (HROs) such …
Generalized Inverses Of Elements Of Rings And Matrices Over Rings, K. Manjunatha Prasad
Generalized Inverses Of Elements Of Rings And Matrices Over Rings, K. Manjunatha Prasad

It is well known that a square matrix with all its columns linearly independent has a unique inverse G satisfying AG=GA=I. However, if A is not square or if columns of A are not linearly independent, then such an inverse does not exist. Moore and Penrose independently generalized the notion of inverses to singular matrices. This led to the theory of generalized inverses. In the course of time different generalized inverses like group inverse, Drazin inverse, Core inverse etc., were introduced. The present author introduced Core-EP inverse in 2013. The author has also worked on the theory of generalized inverse …

In this study, we are performing a comprehensive analysis of the modified tribimaximal mixing scenarios for numerically deriving the constraints on Majorana …

Human activities are altering the natural landscape on the earth’s surface. The thermal environment of densely populated cities is also experiencing rapid change. Remote sensing provides the necessary spatial and temporal data to understand cities' complex human–climate interactions. However, the complex temporal and spatial variability of human activities, urban landscapes, and urban climates make understanding the interactions among them challenging. The study of human–climate interactions is also complicated by the mixed pixels of remote sensing data.
Therefore, I am looking to collaborate with those who want to do research in the field of Remote Sensing and GIS application in water …

The second half of the 1800s was one of the most important eras in all of American history. It is filled with bloodshed, great political movement, heroic actions, and sorrow. The Civil War was fought due to many factors including the ending of slavery and states’ rights. The Republican Party of 1856 ran on the ending of the "Twin Relics of Barbarianism." These relics are the issues of slavery and polygamy. The party looked to push a more radical agenda and end both of these "relics." The question of polygamy in the late 1800s parallels the issue of slavery in …

Wireless sensor networks can improve the efficiency for collecting information in underwater environments. In the past, researchers collected data under the sea by the way of both sending oceanographic equipments into water and recovering it at the end of mission. The whole process often took long time so real-time services cannot be supported. Wireless sensor networks can detect events and transmit the collected data to a data center immediately. However, current terrestrial routing protocols are not suitable in the underwater sensor networks. Due to unique characteristics in the water, the transmission performance and energy of the routing protocols are inefficient. …
