The Reexamination Of Location Choices For Pyramids Complexes From The Third Through The Sixth Dynasties, Gregory Allen Viessman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation is the first overview of location choices for Early Dynastic Period (2900-2545 B.C.E) and Old Kingdom (2543-2118 B.C.E) pyramid complexes since Miroslav Bárta’s 2005 article “Location of the Old Kingdom Pyramids in Egypt.” The factors that went into the decision of Early Dynastic and Old Kingdom pharaohs for the locations of their pyramid complexes is based on a variety of geological, religious, and historical contexts. An overview and analysis of the geology of the seventy-one-kilometer stretch of pyramid complexes from Abu Rawash to Meidum will be conducted. Additionally, the overall history of each site prior to the construction …

Glitched Rhetorics: Online Deliberation Of New Technology, Adam Hughes Nov 2022

Glitched Rhetorics: Online Deliberation Of New Technology, Adam Hughes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines public deliberation on the social media site reddit regarding two controversial technologies: Alexa and Bitcoin. Such vernacular deliberation of prominent new technologies is widespread online and increasingly significant—with Alexa and Bitcoin generating numerous controversies throughout the 2010s & early 2020s—yet understudied by rhetoric and media scholars. Arguments for and against the technologies consistently emerge, and so I ask: What are the terms, patterns, and logics in the binarized reddit deliberations of emergent technology? There is also an alternative rhetorical practice of those conflicted and ambivalent, yet not absent from the deliberations. I name it glitching, a paleologism …

The Impact Of Complete College Tennessee Act On Underserved Students At A Public Historically Black College And University, Tiffany Bellafant Steward

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The transformation of higher education through legislation geared to improve outcomes focused on student persistence and college completion rather than student enrollment has forced colleges and universities to re-evaluate the success of all its students, particularly underserved students who have historically faced challenges in completing degrees. The Complete College Act of 2010 (CCTA) was passed into legislation by the Tennessee General Assembly with an emphasis on college completion which tied an outcomes-based funding model to shift the priorities of institutions. This study examined the impact of CCTA on student enrollment, retention, and graduation rates of underserved students attending a state-funded …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

ABSTRACT Attarzadeh, Faridreza, Ph.D., The University of Memphis, October 2022, Dissertation title: Laser-based powder bed fusion manufacturing of WE43 magnesium alloy and binary magnesium-calcium alloys Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are a unique class of hard-to-process yet critical lightweight engineering materials. Over the years, there have been many developments that address the limitations of the various conventional manufacturing methods used to fabricate Mg- based parts, the latest being additive manufacturing (AM) methods, notably laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). Despite a few successful attempts with non-L-PBF processes, L-PBF is increasingly gaining in popularity and importance for AM of Mg and its …

Geospatial Analysis Of Impact On Evacuation Routes And Urban Areas In South Texas Due To Flood Events, Layda B. Spor Leal, Jungseok Ho, Sara E. Davila Nov 2022

Geospatial Analysis Of Impact On Evacuation Routes And Urban Areas In South Texas Due To Flood Events, Layda B. Spor Leal, Jungseok Ho, Sara E. Davila

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

The Lower Rio Grande Valley has historically faced a variety of hurricanes and tropical storms that have led to sever flooding. As a consequence, waves of mass evacuation of the local population with the means of transportation occur frequently. While evacuation is encouraged in some cases of disaster, the routing is not always available as water takes to roads and drainage capacities are overwhelmed. In order to dissert the most appropriate evacuation routes, it is necessary to analyze the areas that will be affected in the future based on urban locations, elevation, and historical information. This project utilizes a semi-coupled …

Robust Time Series Chain Discovery With Incremental Nearest Neighbors, Li Zhang, Yan Zhu, Yifeng Gao, Jessica Lin Nov 2022

Robust Time Series Chain Discovery With Incremental Nearest Neighbors, Li Zhang, Yan Zhu, Yifeng Gao, Jessica Lin

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Time series motif discovery has been a fundamental task to identify meaningful repeated patterns in time series. Recently, time series chains were introduced as an expansion of time series motifs to identify the continuous evolving patterns in time series data. Informally, a time series chain (TSC) is a temporally ordered set of time series subsequences, in which every subsequence is similar to the one that precedes it, but the last and the first can be arbitrarily dissimilar. TSCs are shown to be able to reveal latent continuous evolving trends in the time series, and identify precursors of unusual events in …

Correctness And Response Time Distributions In The Memtrax Continuous Recognition Task: Analysis Of Strategies And A Reverse-Exponential Model, J. Wesson Ashford, James O. Clifford, Sulekha Anand, Michael F. Bergeron, Curtis B. Ashford, Peter J. Bayley

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

A critical issue in addressing medical conditions is measurement. Memory measurement is difficult, especially episodic memory, which is disrupted by many conditions. On-line computer testing can precisely measure and assess several memory functions. This study analyzed memory performances from a large group of anonymous, on-line participants using a continuous recognition task (CRT) implemented at https://memtrax.com. These analyses estimated ranges of acceptable performance and average response time (RT). For 344,165 presumed unique individuals completing the CRT a total of 602,272 times, data were stored on a server, including each correct response (HIT), Correct Rejection, and RT to the thousandth of a …

Beyond Schooling: Push And Pull Strategies To Integrate Immigrants In The Community, Fernando Naiditch Nov 2022

Beyond Schooling: Push And Pull Strategies To Integrate Immigrants In The Community, Fernando Naiditch

Department of Teaching and Learning Scholarship and Creative Works

More than one million immigrants arrive in the United States each year. The diversity of languages and cultures brought by immigrants makes America a more multicultural and inclusive nation, but also presents some challenges as immigrants engage in their socialization process. Schools play a central role in acculturating immigrant families and their children, and they serve as mediators of the relationships between these families and the larger society. This article describes a project in a school district in New Jersey that focuses on integrating immigrant families in the community. The framework we developed includes a number of strategies that were …

Adiabatic Shear Banding In Nickel And Nickel-Based Superalloys: A Review, Russell A. Rowe, Paul G. Allison, Anthony N. Palazotto, Keivan Davami Nov 2022

Adiabatic Shear Banding In Nickel And Nickel-Based Superalloys: A Review, Russell A. Rowe, Paul G. Allison, Anthony N. Palazotto, Keivan Davami

Faculty Publications

This review paper discusses the formation and propagation of adiabatic shear bands in nickel-based superalloys. The formation of adiabatic shear bands (ASBs) is a unique dynamic phenomenon that typically precedes catastrophic, unpredicted failure in many metals under impact or ballistic loading. ASBs are thin regions that undergo substantial plastic shear strain and material softening due to the thermo-mechanical instability induced by the competitive work hardening and thermal softening processes. Dynamic recrystallization of the material’s microstructure in the shear region can occur and encourages shear localization and the formation of ASBs. Phase transformations are also often seen in ASBs of ferrous …

A Study Of Indigenous North Vietnamese Ca Tru Music, And The Deities Of The Kalachakra Mandala, Daniel D'Aiuto Schultz Nov 2022

A Study Of Indigenous North Vietnamese Ca Tru Music, And The Deities Of The Kalachakra Mandala, Daniel D'Aiuto Schultz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Abstract

This document is in two sections. Chapter I is a study on the history, instruments and performance of Vietnamese ca trù folk music. Indigenous Asian music, especially music from Vietnam, has held an almost mystical interest for me with its links to the doctrines of Buddhism and Hinduism. Ca trù’s singular style, always sung by women in fixed ensembles, is of particular interest because of its colorful history and unique performance practices. The ca trù music of Vietnam’s northern provinces, like much Asian folk music, is considered an endangered genre.

Sources for Ca trù insights are scarce, but some …

Esterase Mediated Insecticide Resistance In The Southern House Mosquito, Culex Quinquefasciatus, Vivek Pokhrel Nov 2022

Esterase Mediated Insecticide Resistance In The Southern House Mosquito, Culex Quinquefasciatus, Vivek Pokhrel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Much is known about the development of insecticide resistance associated with targeted application against insect populations. However, off-target selection by applications of insecticides in agricultural and residential sites also impacts development of insecticide resistance and is understudied. Similarly, the impact of selecting one life stage of mosquitoes on the insecticide susceptibility of different life stages is largely unknown. The first part of this study shows that susceptibility to chlorantraniliprole, which is applied in rice and sugarcane fields in LA, decreased (5.7 to12-fold) in populations of Culex quinquefasciatus collected from near these fields compared to a reference field strain. In addition, …

Compilation Optimizations To Enhance Resilience Of Big Data Programs And Quantum Processors, Travis D. Lecompte Nov 2022

Compilation Optimizations To Enhance Resilience Of Big Data Programs And Quantum Processors, Travis D. Lecompte

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Modern computers can experience a variety of transient errors due to the surrounding environment, known as soft faults. Although the frequency of these faults is low enough to not be noticeable on personal computers, they become a considerable concern during large-scale distributed computations or systems in more vulnerable environments like satellites. These faults occur as a bit flip of some value in a register, operation, or memory during execution. They surface as either program crashes, hangs, or silent data corruption (SDC), each of which can waste time, money, and resources. Hardware methods, such as shielding or error correcting memory (ECM), …

Spam Detection Using Machine Learning And Deep Learning, Olubodunde Agboola Nov 2022

Spam Detection Using Machine Learning And Deep Learning, Olubodunde Agboola

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Text messages are essential these days; however, spam texts have contributed negatively to the success of this communication mode. The compromised authenticity of such messages has given rise to several security breaches. Using spam messages, malicious links have been sent to either harm the system or obtain information detrimental to the user. Spam SMS messages as well as emails have been used as media for attacks such as masquerading and smishing ( a phishing attack through text messaging), and this has threatened both the user and service providers. Therefore, given the waves of attacks, the need to identify and remove …
