Dual Nature Of Magnetic Nanoparticle Dispersions Enables Control Over Short-Range Attraction And Long-Range Repulsion Interactions, Ahmed Al Harraq, Aubry A. Hymel, Emily Lin, Thomas M. Truskett, Bhuvnesh Bharti Dec 2022

Dual Nature Of Magnetic Nanoparticle Dispersions Enables Control Over Short-Range Attraction And Long-Range Repulsion Interactions, Ahmed Al Harraq, Aubry A. Hymel, Emily Lin, Thomas M. Truskett, Bhuvnesh Bharti

Faculty Publications

Competition between attractive and repulsive interactions drives the formation of complex phases in colloidal suspensions. A major experimental challenge lies in decoupling independent roles of attractive and repulsive forces in governing the equilibrium morphology and long-range spatial distribution of assemblies. Here, we uncover the ‘dual nature’ of magnetic nanoparticle dispersions, particulate and continuous, enabling control of the short-range attraction and long-range repulsion (SALR) between suspended microparticles. We show that non-magnetic microparticles suspended in an aqueous magnetic nanoparticle dispersion simultaneously experience a short-range depletion attraction due to the particulate nature of the fluid in competition with an in situ tunable long-range …

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

This capstone project reports the differentiated instructional strategies that were integrated throughout a math unit. The capstone will report the effectiveness of two instructional strategies that were integrated into a math unit that focused on students’ understanding of the relationship between multiplication and division. The math unit had 12 lessons taught over three weeks between the pre-and post-assessment. I will report how the strategies worked and the effect the strategies had on students learning. I collected and analyzed the pre/post-test data and found that nonlinguistic representations and multi-level questioning are effective instructional strategies for increasing student learning.

Assessing Aerodynamic Loads On Low-Rise Buildings Considering Reynolds Number And Turbulence Effects: A Review, Md Faiaz Khaled, Aly Mousaad Aly

Faculty Publications

This paper presents an extensive review of existing techniques used in estimating design wind pressures considering Reynolds number and turbulence effects, as well as a case study of a reference building investigated experimentally. We shed light on the limitations of current aerodynamic testing techniques, provisions in design standards, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods to predict wind-induced pressures. The paper highlights the reasons for obstructing the standardization of the wind tunnel method. Moreover, we introduce improved experimental and CFD techniques to tackle the identified challenges. CFD provides superior and efficient performance by employing wall-modeled large-eddy simulation (WMLES) and hybrid RANS-LES …

Religiosity And Midwestern Lgbtq+ Homeless Youth, Alecia Keller, Nancy Kelley Dec 2022

Religiosity And Midwestern Lgbtq+ Homeless Youth, Alecia Keller, Nancy Kelley

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Previous investigations have focused on the intersections of LGBTQ+ youth and religion, homelessness and religion, or homeless LGBTQ+ youth, without recognizing the multiple intersections that make up each LGBTQ+ youth’s identity. The purpose of this study was to gain more insight into how being homeless, identifying as LGBTQ+, and growing up with some religion played a role in transitional-aged (ages eighteen to twenty-five) youths’ lives. After working with Youth Emergency Services (YES) in Omaha, Nebraska, and conducting interviews with LGBTQ+ youth who were previously homeless, similar topics emerged among participants. Three participants were evicted from their homes because of their …

Effectiveness Of Accommodations For Students With Adhd At Uno, Kayla Farley Dec 2022

A Machine Learning Approach For Predicting Patient Mortality With Heart Rate Variability Statistics, Matthew Thiele, Dario Ghersi

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

The prediction of patient mortality in the healthcare system provides a metric by which hospitals can better manage patient care and assess the needs of each individual patient. As such, the development of better predictive methods is vital for improving patient outcomes and overall quality of care. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the heart’s complex beating patterns, giving medical professionals additional insight into patient health. Previous research has demonstrated the potential use of heart rate variability as a metric for patient mortality prediction for various conditions, however more work is necessary to validate HRV as a metric …

Patterns And Predictors Of Adherence To Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations In Alberta's Tomorrow Project, Olivia K. Loewen, Navjot Sandila, Grace Shen-Tu, Jennifer E. Vena, Huiming Yang, Kara Patterson, Jian Yi Xu Dec 2022

Patterns And Predictors Of Adherence To Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations In Alberta's Tomorrow Project, Olivia K. Loewen, Navjot Sandila, Grace Shen-Tu, Jennifer E. Vena, Huiming Yang, Kara Patterson, Jian Yi Xu

Faculty Publications

Breast cancer screening is an important prevention component as it can reduce cancer mortality and improve survival. Understanding patterns of adherence to screening recommendations is essential to guide health promotion strategies and policy implementation efforts. The 1999 Alberta screening guidelines were used to determine screening status for eligible female participants in Alberta's Tomorrow Project (n = 4,972), a longitudinal province-based cohort. Screening patterns were derived based on screening status assessed at enrollment (2001–2008) and follow-up (2008–2011). Information on reason for screening was also collected at each time point. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess potential predictors of adherence to …

Personalized Breast Cancer Onset Prediction From Lifestyle And Health History Information, Shi Ang Qi, Neeraj Kumar, Jian Yi Xu, Jaykumar Patel, Sambasivarao Damaraju, Grace Shen-Tu, Russell Greiner

Faculty Publications

We propose a method to predict when a woman will develop breast cancer (BCa) from her lifestyle and health history features. To address this objective, we use data from the Alberta's Tomorrow Project of 18,288 women to train Individual Survival Distribution (ISD) models to predict an individual's Breast-Cancer-Onset (BCaO) probability curve. We show that our three-step approach-(1) filling missing data with multiple imputations by chained equations, followed by (2) feature selection with the multivariate Cox method, and finally, (3) using MTLR to learn an ISD model-produced the model with the smallest L1-Hinge loss among all calibrated models with comparable C-index. …

A Systematic Literature Review Of Anti-Discrimination Design Strategies In The Digital Sharing Economy, Miroslav Tushev, Fahimeh Ebrahimi, Anas Mahmoud Dec 2022

A Systematic Literature Review Of Anti-Discrimination Design Strategies In The Digital Sharing Economy, Miroslav Tushev, Fahimeh Ebrahimi, Anas Mahmoud

Faculty Publications

Applications of the Digital Sharing Economy (DSE), such as Uber, Airbnb, and TaskRabbit, have become a main facilitator of economic growth and shared prosperity in modern-day societies. However, recent research has revealed that the participation of minority groups in DSE activities is often hindered by different forms of bias and discrimination. Evidence of such behavior has been documented across almost all domains of DSE, including ridesharing, lodging, and freelancing. However, little is known about the underlying design decisions of DSE platforms which allow certain demographics of the market to gain unfair advantage over others. To bridge this knowledge gap, in …

Roots And Branches: Mimetic Reconstruction Of Women's History Through Nature In Post-Colonial Literature, Jessica D'Albero Dec 2022

Roots And Branches: Mimetic Reconstruction Of Women's History Through Nature In Post-Colonial Literature, Jessica D'Albero

Student Theses

Composed similarly to a mini book, this unconventionally structured thesis centralizes on how contemporary female authors, particularly Aurora Levins Morales and Yaa Gyasi, can rebuild gaps in undocumented women’s history through a fusion of nature within post-colonial fiction. A severe lack of preservation exists regarding women’s historical records due to centuries of facing oppression and dual colonization within domestic and public spheres. As a result, women’s memories have become misdirected. These memory gaps can be mimetically refurbished through fictional reconstruction to reimagine simulated pieces to the puzzle of women’s past. The paper divides into two sections, discussing first the idea …
