Warming climate has greatly affected the stability of the world's glaciers. In 1957, as part of the International Geophysical Year, nine North American glaciers were surveyed in great detail so that they could serve as future benchmarks. Since their initial survey, these nine benchmark glaciers have drastically decreased in volume and areal extent. This is a direct result of global warming. However, the exact amount of their change has never been fully documented and predictions of their lifespans in the wake of continued temperature increase has never been projected. We introduce and study “path odd-covers,” a weakening of Gallai's path decomposition problem and a strengthening of the linear arboricity problem. The path odd-cover number  of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a collection of paths whose vertex sets are contained in  and whose symmetric difference of edge sets is. We prove an upper bound on  in terms of the maximum degree Δ and the number of odd-degree vertices  of the form . This bound is only a factor of 2 from a rather immediate lower bound of the form . This report outlines strategies that education system leaders can use to support the adoption of evidence-based teaching practices within schools, recognising the importance of teaching quality to lift student outcomes. Located at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, Alviso is a historically underrepresented community facing disproportionate impacts of climate change. San José has directly contributed to Alviso’s infrastructure instability, particularly after its controversial 1967 annexation, which excluded Alviso residents from municipal planning processes. Alviso currently ranks in the upper quartile statewide for environmental burden with high exposure to hazardous waste, linguistic isolation, impaired waterways, and solid waste facilities. Our study produced a Community-Led Climate Vulnerability Assessment that centers resident knowledge and integrates it with environmental data to support equitable climate planning. Living In Liberal Areas Reduced Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among Conservatives, Brittany L. Kmush, Rachel E. Dinero

Population Health Research Brief Series

Political divisions shaped public health responses throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with conservatives expressing higher vaccine hesitancy than liberals. But does where conservatives live matter? This brief summarizes findings from a study using survey data from 683 U.S. adults (ages 18-94) collected March-April 2023, combined with 2020 presidential election results by zip code. The authors found that liberals consistently had low vaccine hesitancy and high uptake regardless of where they lived, but conservatives living in lower Trump vote share communities reported lower vaccine hesitancy and higher vaccination and booster uptake than conservatives in high Trump vote share communities. This paper presents optimisation studies for the combination of high efficiency reversible solid oxide cells (rSOC) with offshore wind farms in the Celtic Sea. Reversible systems can be used both in electrolyser and fuel cell mode, allowing potential benefits from switching between modes depending on the instantaneous condition of the electricity and hydrogen markets. The purpose of these studies is to determine the most cost-efficient method to combine rSOC with offshore wind whilst matching electricity supply with demand. People with Phelan–McDermid syndrome (PMS) have reduced speech and language abilities, yet little research has profiled the communication abilities in this population. The purpose of this study was threefold: identifying the language and communication profiles of school-aged children with PMS, identifying genetic contributions to language and communication abilities, and determining the feasibility of remote data collection for research purposes. A speech language pathologist used standardized assessments and direct evaluations by video conferencing to evaluate language and communication abilities. Purpose:

Several states' early intervention (EI) eligibility criteria require children to show developmental delay based on age-equivalent (AE) scores. Unfortunately, the use of AE scores to determine eligibility is not empirically supported because they do not account for the normal variability of scores found within the general population. The purpose of this project was to explore the likelihood of eligibility misidentifications based on AE scores rather than using standard scores that incorporate normal population variability.

Physics-Informed Neural Network For The Simulation Of Turbulent Jet Grout Flow, Rakam Lama Tamang, Yichuan Zhu, Joseph Coe

This study presents a physics-informed neural network (PINN) framework to simulate axisymmetric submerged jet grout flow using high-fidelity data generated from ANSYS Fluent simulations. The CFD model solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations coupled with the k-ε turbulence closure model, converted into axisymmetric form to reflect jet grouting. The PINN incorporates continuity, RANS equations, and turbulence closure equations into the loss function, enabling it to learn turbulent flow physics without requiring mesh generation. Separate neural networks were used for each flow variables—axial velocity (U), radial velocity (V), pressure (P), turbulent kinetic energy (k), and dissipation rate (ε). The model was …

The existence of a right of intrastate travel implicates basic liberties like visiting parks, driving to visit family in another city, going to church or the doctor, or voting. In addition to its importance to everyday, basic liberties, the right of intrastate travel is important for vulnerable populations, like disaster evacuees, unhoused people subject to displacement, and people seeking abortions in states without uniform availability, like New Mexico. Shell-shaped Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) represent a paradigmatic instance of quantum fluids in hollow geometries exhibiting phenomena that bridge from ultracold atomic to astrophysical realms. In this work, we present a comprehensive survey of the dynamics, thermodynamics, and collective excitations of shell-shaped BECs, synthesizing two decades of our group's theoretical work in light of recent experimental breakthroughs. We begin by analyzing the evolution of a BEC from filled-sphere to hollow-shell geometries, illustrating the necessity of microgravity conditions to avoid gravitational sag. Battery state-of-health (SoH) estimation is central to transportation electrification because it conditions safety limits, warranty accounting, power capability management, and long-horizon fleet optimization. Although deep temporal architectures can achieve high laboratory accuracy, field deployment is frequently limited by laboratory (Lab)-to-field (L2F) domain shift that alters input statistics, feature definitions, and noise regimes. Under such a shift, predictors may remain strongly monotonic, preserving degradation ordering and become operationally unreliable due to systematic output distortion (e.g., compression/warping of the SoH scale). The integration of viral sequence into the human genome plays critical role in the onset of various diseases, especially cancers. To facilitate systematic analysis of these events, we present VISDB 2.0, an expanded and updated database of human viral integration sites (VISs). The current release contains more than 270,000 manually curated VISs derived from 209 peer-reviewed publications, covering 11 viruses, including four retroviruses and seven DNA viruses. This represents a 3.5-fold increase in VIS entries compared with the previous version. Bicuspid valves with crescent-shaped leaflets are found in lymphatic vessels and veins, where their primary function is to prevent reflux and ensure unidirectional flow toward the heart. These valves are passive, and their functionality emerges spontaneously from a complex interplay between the properties of the valve leaflets and the flow patterns developing within the vessel sinus region surrounding the valve. The main function of the valves is to limit retrograde flow, or reflux, but the optimal valve structure has not been well characterized. Tusqh: Topological Control Of Volume-Fraction Meshes Near Small Features And Dirty Geometry, Brian Reese Shawcroft

This work develops a framework to create meshes with user-specified homology from potentially dirty geometry by coupling background grids, persistent homology, and a generalization of volume fractions. For a mesh with fixed grid size, the topology of the output mesh changes predictably and monotonically as its volume-fraction threshold decreases. Topological anti-aliasing methods are introduced to resolve pinch points and disconnected regions that are artifacts of user choice of grid size and orientation, making the output meshes suitable for downstream processes including analysis. Managing preoperative anxiety is a dominant clinical challenge in pediatric anesthesia, with up to 70% of children exhibiting clinically relevant distress prior to induction. Heightened anxiety before surgery is not simply a temporary emotional issue, but can be directly associated with a negative perioperative experience including resistance to separation from parents, difficult mask acceptance, induction agitation, emergence delirium, and maladaptive behaviors days/weeks postoperatively. Traditionally, oral midazolam has been the predominant anxiolytic of choice selected for managing preoperative anxiety in pediatric patients. Alaska is an aviation-dependent state with about 23% of the population living off the road system. For so many, aviation infrastructure performance is critical to maintain flows of food, medicine, air ambulance services, patient travel, and basic transportation between communities. A majority of Vermonters have heard of prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket, but very few state residents have actually participated in them. Vermonters believe it should be illegal to use prediction markets to bet on elections, the economy, or political events like war, but are split over whether it should be legal to use them to bet on sports or cultural events. A majority support further federal government regulation of prediction markets. Nearly half of Vermonters expect prediction markets to have a negative effect on the country over the next decade.
