Land Epistemic Ethic: Exploring The Complex Intersection Of Human Bodies, Land, And Identity In Middle Belt Nigeria Cosmologies, Fwangmun Oscar Danladi

International Journal on Responsibility

The Indigenous cosmologies of Nigeria’s Middle Belt emphasize the relationship between human bodies and the land, transcending Western epistemological binaries and revealing profound socio-religious insights into environmental responsibility. Practices such as the burial of newborns’ umbilical cords, often dismissed as animistic or fetishistic, embody a sacred connection to the land that emphasizes belonging rather than ownership. Using an autoethnographic approach, this study critically examines these cosmologies and identifies how the sacredness of land can serve as a repository of communal memory and potential. Student Scholar Showcase

Engaging students in effective instructional strategies in spelling influences overall decoding abilities and literacy development.  During this session, participants will explore how spelling patterns and word analysis strategies support literacy achievement throughout elementary grades. We will examine the developmental stages of spelling, learn how to explicitly teach spelling patterns and rules, and practice strategies for providing interventions that meet the needs of struggling spellers. Participants will partake in a lesson simulation to role play instructional strategies effectively during phonics instruction.

Feminist Pedagogy

As two Black feminist communication scholars, we reflect on the importance of intersectional and culturally responsive community engaged pedagogical practices in communication education. In this paper, we articulate the ways in which integrating community engaged pedagogical practices more intentionally in our curriculum, positions communication educators to participate in and contribute to advocacy based teaching that centralizes reflexivity, dialogue, critical literacy, and alliance building. Rooted in bell hooks’ theory of engaged pedagogy, our approach advocates for educators to articulate a pedagogy of Conscientizacao and to create curricula that teach us all to transgress.

Critical Explorations: Using Feminist And Artful Inquiry In An Adolescent Literature Class, Emily L. Freeman

Feminist Pedagogy

Using feminist and artful inquiry in teacher education courses creates spaces of resistance to normative modes of sharing knowledge. The Critical Explorations project is the final assignment for a required young adult and adolescent literature course and requires that students engage in creative modes of expression when sharing their research. The teaching activity opens up new possibilities for engagement with texts and research questions that works to disrupt traditional English Language Arts assessments.

This series of intercultural communication assignments was designed to assist students with the challenging transition from an ethnocentric (inflexible) mindset to an ethnorelative (flexible) one. At the beginning of the semester, students select a country and a corresponding international news source (online) to read throughout the semester. They complete several Engaging the World’s Cultures (EWC) assignments during the semester to accomplish two goals: to dive deep into the culture and to strengthen the uptake of an ethnorelative mindset when learning about a different culture. A key component of feminist information literacy and feminist research is the development of a citational praxis. One of the ways that students can foster their citational praxis is by writing a citation statement as part of their iterative research process. The purpose of this original teaching activity (OTA) is to teach students how to develop a citational praxis. The activity provides students with an introduction to citational praxis, the purpose of a citation statement, and the tools and strategies to implement it in their own research.

Teaching During A Pandemic: Using Digital Visual Storytelling As Chicana/X/ And Latina/X Feminist Pedagogy, Magaly Ordonez

This article offers critical pedagogical insights and experiences using StoryMaps as a queer trans* Chicanx educator during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. I offer StoryMaps as an original teaching activity rooted in Chicana/x feminist epistemologies and pedagogies that prioritize the voices of marginalized communities as sources of knowledge. I propose the pedagogical uses of digital storytelling as a Chicana/x feminist tool for creative critical thinking and shift in learning spaces that go beyond traditional essay-style writing assignments. It builds from my experience teaching undergraduate courses at a predominantly white institution in the Midwest.

Peer Power In Rural America: Community-Led Hiv Prevention Strategies From Appalachia And Beyond, James Arthur

This abstract explores how peer and community-led HIV prevention strategies are transforming access, engagement, and equity in rural America, with a focus on Appalachia. Drawing on findings from a systematic review of 15 peer-reviewed studies (2014–2025), we highlight effective models like peer navigation, social network recruitment, mobile outreach, and community mobilization that have increased HIV testing, PrEP uptake, and care linkage among rural and underserved populations. The session will showcase evidence from programs led by and for marginalized communities such as GBQMSM, TGNB individuals, people who use drugs, and youth in regions historically excluded from mainstream HIV efforts.
