Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and a leading monogenic cause of autism, arises from the loss of Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein (Fmr protein), leading to synaptic and cognitive dysfunction. Here, we demonstrate that the frequency-specific electrical stimulation of the medial septum/diagonal band of Broca (MSDB) can restore cognitive and synaptic impairments in Fmr1 knockout mice, a validated model of FXS. Thirty minutes of 35 Hz MSDB stimulation significantly improved subsequent recognition memory, sociability, spatial learning, and fear memory, with recognition memory enhancements persisting for up to 7 days after daily 30 min …

We found that beta cells from Tet2-deficient mice were protected from killing in a model of autoimmune Type 1 diabetes, but the mechanism of protection and specific cell types affected by Tet2 loss were unknown. Herein we show that in Tet2-deficient NOD mice transplanted with wild-type bone marrow, there are fewer islet infiltrating lymphocytes beginning 8–10 weeks after transplant, which was seen primarily among CD4⁺ T-cells. Transcription factor binding motifs for interferon responses factors and inflammatory signaling molecules were enriched in Tet2-responsive cis-regulatory elements across all KO islet endocrine cells, but we observed beta cell-specific enrichment …

A Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization reorganizes family life, yet siblings’ perspectives are rarely centered in NICU research. This phenomenological, art-based dissertation explores NICU siblings’ lived experience as revealed through the roles they created during engagement in dramatic reality. Eight child siblings of NICU patients participated in a storymaking and improvisational role-play intervention. Transcripts, participant artwork, and stories were examined through thematic analysis, and dramaturgical coding. Cisplatin resistance limits the effectiveness of platinum-based chemotherapy for lung adenocarcinoma, yet practical systemic diagnostics for cisplatin sensitivity are lacking. We developed ImmunoMetabolic Profiling Analysis and Classification Tool (IMPACT), an interpretable machine learning pipeline that selects the best performing model and reduces it to a minimal, mechanistically informative feature set via recursive feature elimination. In a syngeneic orthotopic model, we quantified 25 serum amino acids and 16 immune cell populations across bone marrow, spleen, lung, and mediastinal lymph nodes to capture systemic immunometabolic states. This study examines the emergence of poker as a competitive mind sport in Japan, a country where strict anti-gambling laws (Penal Code Article 185) prohibit cash wagering. Drawing on secondary materials—including newspaper and magazine reports, and online media—as well as primary data from Poker Guild Corporation and interviews with the Kamiichi Town Planning Division, the research applies established theoretical frameworks (Getz & Page’s event tourism, Putnam’s social capital, Reith’s techno-economic systems) to analyze the distinctive evolution of Japanese poker culture. This research explores three approaches to handling academic dishonesty: punitive, preventive, and positive. First, the history of cheating and the punitive approach is briefly discussed. Next, research results of a preventive approach that was used at a Japanese university are given. During this research, three surveys were conducted to gauge students’ opinions about cheating, to account for the methods, and to measure the prevalence of cheating on post-reading quizzes. The survey results show that at least eleven types of cheating on post-reading quizzes were used and that non-cheating students were concerned about this issue. As a result of the surveys, …

The study further considers how demographic shifts, advances in medical technology, and socio-legal inertia affect end-of-life care, particularly for individuals with diminished capacity. In particular, it traces the shift from the Technical Intern Training Programme (TITP) to the Employment for Skill Development (ESD) Programme as the primary entry route, and examines how these institutional changes are embedded within the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) framework.

As telework (e.g., working from home) has become widespread, understanding its organizational impact from managers’ perspectives and identifying supervisor behaviors that influence this impact are critical. Drawing on work disruption theory, we examined the relationships between four supervisor behaviors in the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) management competencies—respectful and responsible (RR), managing and communicating work (MCW), reasoning and managing difficult situations (RDS), and managing the individual within the team (MIT)—and the perceived organizational impact of telework. In this HP proceeding, a tenant, a co-op shareholder, sought an order compelling the landlord (managing agent) to correct Housing Maintenance Code violations for lack of electricity and water leaks. The landlord moved to dismiss, arguing the proprietary lease assigned repair responsibility for interior conditions to the tenant. The court denied the landlord's motion, holding that cooperative corporations and their agents have a non-delegable statutory duty to correct health and safety violations, irrespective of the proprietary lease. Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are widely used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity, with growing evidence of their anti-inflammatory effects. We report the case of a 54-year-old woman with obesity, T2DM, and biopsy-confirmed plaque psoriasis who developed joint pain and stiffness consistent with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Her symptoms persisted despite appropriate trials of topical corticosteroids, calcipotriene, and oral apremilast. She also declined methotrexate due to concerns about side effects. Imaging of her hands revealed distal interphalangeal joint space narrowing, marginal erosions, and periosteal reaction, supporting the diagnosis of PsA. The patient was …

BACKGROUND: Generative artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT are increasingly used by medical students for self-directed learning. Although these models demonstrate linguistic fluency, their reliability as supplementary resources for preclinical education remains uncertain. In particular, comparisons with evidence-based references such as UpToDate are lacking.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the similarity between responses generated by ChatGPT (with GPT-4o mini) and those from UpToDate to preclinical medical education questions to assess ChatGPT's potential as an adjunctive learning tool.

This paper examines the quantitative scale, field composition, and financial structure of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) in rural regions experiencing population decline and aging at three levels—the nonprofit sector as a whole, policy fields, and individual organizations—and explores their adaptation and sustainability under demographic change. The empirical setting is certified NPO corporations located in Tottori Prefecture. Drawing on publicly available financial data for fiscal years 2014–2023, the study constructs ratio indicators and per-capita indicators and, in particular, depicts recent trends through a two-point comparison between FY2014 and FY2023 together with a description of year-by-year changes. This study quantitatively examines the economic impact of Michi-no-Eki (Roadside Stations) in Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture, using an input–output analysis based on the Chiba Prefectural Interindustry Table. Eight Michi-no-Eki were evaluated in terms of direct, indirect, and induced effects, including employment creation. The results show that the total production-inducing effect generated by the stations amounts to ¥7.02 billion per year, and the employment-inducing effect reaches 108.7 persons annually, indicating that Michi-no-Eki function as a central engine of the local economy. Moreover, thematic diversity among stations—such as loquat, flowers, and seafood—enhances multiplier effects through inter-sectoral linkages. These findings demonstrate that Michi-no-Eki …

This paper quantitatively analyzes trends in the working hours of schoolteachers in Japan using Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) data from three survey waves. The analysis focuses on differences between fixed-term and permanent employment contracts and on school environment variables, and their relationships with working hours and teacher well-being. Teachers on permanent contracts tend, on average, to work longer hours than those on fixed-term contracts, largely because of greater time spent on administrative duties and extracurricular activities. School environmental characteristics and principal leadership show only weak statistical associations with total working hours. Subjective job satisfaction is lower, and workload …

Using the case of rejection of request for medical assistance made by an undocumented resident in Japan, I considered the applicability of the International Covenant on Human Rights to social security. The central issue here is whether the distinction between Japanese nationals and foreign nationals for reasons of national finances is reasonable and objective. In conclusion, determining reasonable and objective criteria requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond legal interpretation. The process must consider broader factors, including Japan’s role in the international community and the global trend toward advancing human rights protections.

From Cart to Kitchen is a hands-on workshop designed to support families experiencing housing transitions in the San Jose area in building healthier eating habits. In partnership with Family Supportive Housing, the program focuses on strengthening food literacy, helping participants feel more confident in choosing nutritious meals on a budget.

The workshop includes short, easy-to-follow videos and interactive activities that cover topics like reading food labels, understanding basic nutrition, and grocery shopping with limited resources. Participants also receive a user-friendly pamphlet with tips on meal planning, shopping smart, and incorporating seasonal produce.
