Starlink-Based Navigation System For Fixed-Wing Uav, Aidan Panter, Spencer Richte, Ayse Okatan, Dylan Hardt, Oleg Sugatov, Eldon Crossett

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Current Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) navigation and control systems in place for contemporary drones are mainly directed through Short Range Radio Frequency communications. The shortcoming of this technology is that it imposes limitations on UAV operational ranges as well as web-based controls. Currently, there are no UAVs that can provide a unified web-based platform for navigation and control to its users through an internet connection and our goal is to develop this platform. The proposed system combines satellite internet services via a Starlink Mini satellite terminal with a specially designed airframe capable of long-range UAV control via internet-enabled interfaces. In …

Experimental Validation Of Torricelli’S Law Using Dual Tank Geometries, Utkarsh Ravi, Zarif Naimul Mar 2026

Experimental Validation Of Torricelli’S Law Using Dual Tank Geometries, Utkarsh Ravi, Zarif Naimul

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

This project investigates Torricelli’s Law, a fundamental principle in fluid mechanics that relates the velocity of fluid exiting an orifice to the height of the fluid above the opening. The experiment compares the drainage rates of two vertical tanks with different diameters but identical outlet sizes, isolating the influence of tank cross-sectional area on flow behavior. Each tank is filled to the same initial height, and water level versus time data are collected as the tanks drain under gravity. Using differential equation modeling and separation of variables, theoretical predictions are derived and compared to experimental results. Data analysis focuses on …

Improving The Safety And Performance Of Rotating Machinery In Steam Turbines, Gabrielle Avendt, Paulo Da Silva, Gillian Negron Burgos, Mason Arnold

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

In this research, we are planning to explore steam turbine mechanisms, applications, advantages, limitations, and future trends. Disciplines such as dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, and heat transfer all come together in the operation of a steam turbine to convert thermal energy into mechanical work. Steam turbines are used on board aircraft carriers, submarines, civilian ships, and power plants to produce propulsion and electricity. Steam turbines are highly efficient, durable and capable of maintaining constant speed and load. However, their complexity, high cost, strict water-chemistry requirements, and reliance on skilled operators make them demanding systems to manage. The future …

Modeling The Gravitation Field Of M85 Using Newtonian Physics And 3d Vector Fields In Matlab, Jeffery Smothermon, Jose Murphy, Allen Perry, Jamie Shore, Caden Mosteller, Jose Pons Mar 2026

Modeling The Gravitation Field Of M85 Using Newtonian Physics And 3d Vector Fields In Matlab, Jeffery Smothermon, Jose Murphy, Allen Perry, Jamie Shore, Caden Mosteller, Jose Pons

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

This project explores the gravitational field of the supermassive blackhole M87, using multivariable calculus and Newtonian physics. The gravitational field is treated as a three-dimensional gravitational field vector, derived from Newton’s universal law of gravitation, assuming the black hole as a point mass: g(x,y,z)=-∇Φ=G*M*(R/|R|^3) Where G is the gravitational constant, M is the mass of the black hole, and R is the radial vector from a particle to the center of the black hole. To overcome the inaccuracy of Newtonian Gravitation of black holes, the Schwarzschild radius is implemented to omit parts of the blackhole that are past the event …

Modeling Temperature Variation Across Regions Using Multivariable Calculus, Jacob Sweeten, Angel Velazquez, Benjamin Katz, Miles Melichar, Mckenzi Hallenback, Chirag Kumar Mar 2026

Modeling Temperature Variation Across Regions Using Multivariable Calculus, Jacob Sweeten, Angel Velazquez, Benjamin Katz, Miles Melichar, Mckenzi Hallenback, Chirag Kumar

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Temperature across a state changes with factors such as latitude and elevation, making it a perfect example of how a function can depend on more than one variable. Our team’s project looks at temperature as a multivariable function that can be studied using concepts from Calculus III, such as double integrals. We’re using Colorado as our model because its mountainous terrain and regional changes give clear temperature differences to analyze. The goal is to build a simple equation for temperature, T(x,y), that shows how it changes across the state and visualize those patterns with gradient fields and level curves. While …

The Use Of Descent Gradients In Ai Learning Models, Alexander Wheeler Mar 2026

The Use Of Descent Gradients In Ai Learning Models, Alexander Wheeler

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

AI learning models use mathematical techniques to effectively minimize errors and improve prediction accuracy. Essential to these techniques is the use of the gradient descent, which outputs the correct way to adjust the model’s parameters to most effectively minimize error. The gradient descent is applied at the point of error produced by the program’s loss-function, a multi-variable function that mathematically represents the magnitude of error. This paper focuses on the implementation of the gradient descent, and its optimization of updating the models’ parameters. Multiple types of loss functions are examined, such as squared error and cross-entropy, and their influence on …

Phaëthon System, Brady Roudabush, Emelia Thompson, Lauren Gallo, Hannah Pineau, Ajay Jacob, Jacob Woods

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Thousands of people go missing each year in forested areas under dense canopies where visibility is limited to search and rescue efforts. The current search and rescue (SAR) drone industry uses large drones with heavy thermal imaging equipment to look for missing persons overhead, but struggles to look through dense forests efficiently, endangering responders by sending them into uncharted territory. Unlike traditional SAR drones, the Phaëthon System will improve the current SAR drone industry by using a swarm of drones that can map up to 70 meters ahead of the drone efficiently, while increasing responder safety. A command drone observes …

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Piezoelectric Technology in Runways and Taxiways Professor Ehringer Lucas, Claudia M. An average airport uses significant amounts of electricity, with large and medium size airports reaching over 150,000 MWh of energy costing approximately $20.4 million per year. Piezoelectric technology can be a passive source of income to alleviate the cost of maintaining airport activity. This technology has many applications, and one of the most common applications of piezoelectric technology is in the form of tiles. An example of the tiles in use would be in the Shibuya station, which generates electricity through piezoelectric’s. The piezoelectric effect, by definition, is the …

Surface And Subsurface Mapping Drone, Matthew Perkins, Aayan Mehra, Garrett Jarvis, Samuel Mago, Nicholas Christianson

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The Surface and Subsurface Mapping Drone (SSMD) is an extraterrestrial drone that will map the Martian surface and subsurface using a combination of LiDAR and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). When designed, the SSMD was inspired by NASA’s ingenuity helicopter, the first unmanned drone to fly in Mars’ atmosphere. Similar to Ingenuity, the SSMD will be made of mostly lightweight materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber. These materials will provide the drone with the necessary strength to carry its own weight, while also keeping its mass as low as possible so that it can fly in Mars’ ultra-thin atmosphere. However, …

Modeling The Dynamical Behavior Of Near-Earth Dust Using Simulated Fraunhofer Line Observations, Henry Sanders Mar 2026

Modeling The Dynamical Behavior Of Near-Earth Dust Using Simulated Fraunhofer Line Observations, Henry Sanders

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Understanding how asteroidal and cometary debris evolves and travels through the inner Solar System is critical for predicting impact risks and maintaining the safety of orbital infrastructure. Particles of all sizes and sources pose significant hazards to satellites operating in near-Earth and cislunar space. As such, modeling and analyzing how small asteroidal and cometary particles evolve over time under the influence of gravitational and non-gravitational perturbations is key to ascertaining this threat. Building upon previous Studies (e.g., Reynolds et al., 2004), we investigate and model the dynamical behavior of debris particles within the inner Solar System for comparison to observations …

Systemic Dehumanization In The Dprk: A Human Security Analysis, Aleksandria Pavlenko Mar 2026

Systemic Dehumanization In The Dprk: A Human Security Analysis, Aleksandria Pavlenko

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

This paper examines personal security in North Korea, or the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The case of DPRK shows how individual safety, dignity, and freedom are jeopardized in one of the most oppressive and militarized regimes of the world. Informed by scholarship, this case study shows how the oppressive tools of control, namely the system of ideological dominance, the caste-like songbun hierarchy, and the ubiquitous surveillance system, systematically dehumanize the population of North Korea. For the most part, the DPRK regime of control is an instance of structural violence, which uses psychological and emotional means of manipulation to …

Reinforcement Learning - Driven Satellite Attitude Recovery: Unknown Faults, Simulation-To-Processor In Loop, Chinmay Mirji, Saeed A Ahmadi

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Conventional attitude control algorithms often degrade when faced with actuator faults, sensor noise, or system uncertainties. This work presents a reinforcement-learning (RL) framework for satellite attitude recovery under unknown failures, focusing on real-time deployment through a processor-in-the-loop (PIL) setup. A continuous-control DDPG agent is trained in a high-fidelity Python/Basilisk simulation environment, where domain randomization captures variations in inertia, external torque, and actuator limitations to promote robust policy learning.

The Exploration Of Black Women Leaders In Rural Community Colleges, Tiara D. Howard Mar 2026

The Exploration Of Black Women Leaders In Rural Community Colleges, Tiara D. Howard

Knowledge and Creativity Expo

The Exploration of Black Women Leaders in Rural Community Colleges

Abstract: Black women have a hunger for education and self-sufficiency. Among Black students in higher education, women are more likely than men to earn degrees: Black women obtain 64.1% of bachelor’s degrees, 71.5% of master’s degrees, and 65.9% of doctoral, medical, and dental degrees (AAUW, n.d.). Yet despite this drive, dedication, and ambition, there remains a scarcity of Black women leaders in rural areas, particularly in community colleges. And when a successful Black woman does rise to a position of influence, there isn't a blueprint or road map for others …

The Dangers Of Social Media In Political Theory, Eden M. Shimanek Mar 2026

The Dangers Of Social Media In Political Theory, Eden M. Shimanek

Global Tides

Increasing political polarization is a prominent feature of the twenty-first-century political landscape, with social media playing a significant role. This essay evaluates social media as a political platform through Hannah Arendt’s notion of the Vita Activa, which describes the political realm and the ideas of totalitarianism. Using this framework, I argue that the surging political use of social media creates digital “echo chambers” that result from the loss of human plurality, which ultimately marks the diverse nature of the political realm. I would continue to argue that these chambers evolve into the notion that Arendt notes as world alienation or …

Protection Vs. Progression: A Macroeconomic Approach To Military Expenditure Direct Effects On Social Outcomes Using Ihdi Measures, Connor Graham Mar 2026

Protection Vs. Progression: A Macroeconomic Approach To Military Expenditure Direct Effects On Social Outcomes Using Ihdi Measures, Connor Graham

Global Tides

This study examines whether military expenditure reduces inequality-adjusted human development and how national governance quality moderates these effects. Using panel data covering 121 countries from 2010-2023, two-way fixed effects models are employed to estimate the relationship between military spending and the Inequality-Adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI). Three key findings emerge from the analysis based on the resulting data. First, a one percentage point increase in military spending reduces IHDI by 0.0012-0.0015 points. Second, the effects prove seven times larger in developed countries than in developing ones, which runs contrary to expectations and prior literature. Lastly, political stability emerged as a …

The Royal And Divine Garden: Cherubim And Vegetation Imagery In Solomon’S Temple And The Ancient Near East, Jack W. Sulewski Mar 2026

The Royal And Divine Garden: Cherubim And Vegetation Imagery In Solomon’S Temple And The Ancient Near East, Jack W. Sulewski

Global Tides

Solomon’s Temple is described in significant detail in 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles. It may surprise the reader to know that virtually all iconography included in the Temple’s design were standard forms of communicating religious concepts in the Ancient Near East. This can present some theological problems. Is Israel’s “use" of other pagan nations' religious symbolism an issue when communicating the holiness of God? To understand further the relationship between culture, politics, and Ancient Near Eastern religion, I spent one month doing archival research in England’s multiple museums analyzing ANE object collections. Through a report of my work, this essay …

A Case Against Pragmatic Encroachment, Mahali Kuzyk Mar 2026

A Case Against Pragmatic Encroachment, Mahali Kuzyk

Global Tides

In their paper, Evidence, Pragmatics, and Justification Fantl and McGrath offer a seemingly intuitive and attractive route to a revision of what counts as epistemic justification and knowledge. They argue that knowledge is not just a matter of evidence, but depends in part on one’s practical situation. Higher stakes and different utilities can change whether a belief is knowledge-constituting. This essay will argue that Fantl and McGrath’s attempt to use their Knowledge-Action principle (KA) to back pragmatic encroachment ultimately fails.
