The Emergence Of Specialized Roles Within Groups, Robert L. Goldstone, Edgar J. Andrade-Lotero, Robert D. Hawkins, Michael E. Roberts

Psychology and Neuroscience Faculty Publications

Humans routinely form groups to achieve goals that no individual can accomplish alone. Group coordination often brings to mind synchrony and alignment, where all individuals do the same thing (e.g., driving on the right side of the road, marching in lockstep, or playing musical instruments on a regular beat). Yet, effective coordination also typically involves differentiation, where specialized roles emerge for different members (e.g., prep stations in a kitchen or positions on an athletic team). Role specialization poses a challenge for computational models of group coordination, which have largely focused on achieving synchrony. Here, we present the CARMI …

Florawear: Wearable Living Interface, Hye Yeon Nam, Janiece Campbell, Andrew M. Webb, Brendan Harmon

Faculty Publications

While nature can benefit people both mentally and physically, contemporary society has become increasingly disconnected from nature. To rebuild a stronger connection with nature in our everyday life, we introduce FloraWear, a do-it-yourself, wearable living interface, that enables people to easily and closely connect with plants. This pictorial introduces how knowledge is built and shared with others using hybrid craft and fabrication, illustrates the material experiments and design development for FloraWear, and discusses how it affects wearers. Then we summarize how FloraWear can help catalyze a shift in people's perspectives towards nature. By developing emotional ties to their wearable plants, …

Global Three-Dimensional Water Vapor Feature-Tracking For Horizontal Winds Using Hyperspectral Infrared Sounder Data From Overlapped Tracks Of Two Satellites, Amir Ouyed, Nadia Smith, Xubin Zeng, Thomas Galarneau Jr., Hui Su, Ross D. Dixon Feb 2023

Global Three-Dimensional Water Vapor Feature-Tracking For Horizontal Winds Using Hyperspectral Infrared Sounder Data From Overlapped Tracks Of Two Satellites, Amir Ouyed, Nadia Smith, Xubin Zeng, Thomas Galarneau Jr., Hui Su, Ross D. Dixon

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The lack of measurements of three-dimensional (3D) distribution of horizontal wind vectors is a major challenge in atmospheric science. Here, we develop an algorithm to retrieve winds for nine pressure levels at 1° grid spacing from 70°N to 70°S. The retrieval is done by tracking water vapor from the hyperspectral Cross-track Infrared Sounder aboard two polar satellites (NOAA-20 and Suomi-NPP) that have overlapped tracks separated by 50 min. We impose a gross error check by flagging retrievals that are too different from ERA-5 reanalysis. Testing the algorithm for the first week of January and July 2020 indicates that our algorithm …

Heart Rate Variability (Hrv) Loss And Other Ekg Changes Prior To A Cardiopulmonary Event In Children Admitted To The Icu At A Tertiary Care Children’S Hospital, Sabrina R. Orta, Shreya Chandran, Utpal Bhalala

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years

Introduction: HRV and EKG changes prior to cardiopulmonary events (CPEs) occurring in children in intensive care unit (ICU) settings is not well documented. We assess if substantial losses of HRV and/or other EKG changes, if any, may be detectable prior to a CPE occurring in children admitted to the ICU.

Methods: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted in the ICU from January to February of 2023 at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. A “CPE” was defined as a change in the clinical status of a child warranting a cardiopulmonary intervention. Demographic and clinical data from each patient was collected, …

The Evolution Of The Institution Of Waqf In Its Historical Context In The Middle East: An Alternative View, Sobir Komilov Feb 2023

The Evolution Of The Institution Of Waqf In Its Historical Context In The Middle East: An Alternative View, Sobir Komilov

Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics

This paper studies the concept of waqf in its historical evolution in order to understand its role as a substitute for government in providing social services to the most vulnerable parts of the population in Islamic history since the 7th century. In the literature, there are mainly two schools that explain why awqaf flourished during the medieval period with some ups and downs until the end of Ottoman rule with the fall and near disappearance of awqaf in the Middle East after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. The first school, among which orientalists constitute the majority, consider awqaf as …

Islamic Human Development Index (I-Hdi) And Poverty Reduction In Oic Countries, Maizura Md Isa, Mohamed Ariff Abdul Kareem, Mohamed Eskandar Shah, Nasim S. Shirazi Feb 2023

Islamic Human Development Index (I-Hdi) And Poverty Reduction In Oic Countries, Maizura Md Isa, Mohamed Ariff Abdul Kareem, Mohamed Eskandar Shah, Nasim S. Shirazi

Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics

The fight against poverty requires a broader perspective than simply focusing on the issue of income insufficiency. Thus, adopting human development strategies is relevant to poverty alleviation because it provides an incentive to broaden the database on poverty by studying the deprivation of a human being's functioning and capabilities. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has developed the Human Development Index (HDI), considered the most comprehensive indicator. However, it is not fully compatible and sufficient to measure human development from the Islamic perspective. This study attempts to explore the Islamic Human Development Index (i-HDI) based on the five pillars of …

Becoming A Reflective Practitioner: An Analysis Of Student Teacher Reflection, Thunsinee Muangthong

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study aimed to understand how student teachers reflected on their teaching practice during their student teaching semester and their perceptions on using reflection as a tool to develop their teaching practices. One hundred and twenty-four written and oral reflections by fifteen student teachers were analyzed to categorize their reflections. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with four participants to gain an in-depth understanding of their perceptions on reflection. The findings showed that student teachers’ reflections addressed five main themes (instruction, management, relationships, learning experiences, and characteristics of effective teachers), spanned four types (summary, descriptive, comparative, and transformative), and …

Kras-Mutant Lung Cancer: Targeting Molecular And Immunologic Pathways, Therapeutic Advantages And Restrictions, Nastaran Karimi, Seyed Javad Moghaddam

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

RAS mutations are among the most common oncogenic mutations in human cancers. Among RAS mutations, KRAS has the highest frequency and is present in almost 30% of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Lung cancer is the number one cause of mortality among cancers as a consequence of outrageous aggressiveness and late diagnosis. High mortality rates have been the reason behind numerous investigations and clinical trials to discover proper therapeutic agents targeting KRAS. These approaches include the following: direct KRAS targeting; synthetic lethality partner inhibitors; targeting of KRAS membrane association and associated metabolic rewiring; autophagy inhibitors; downstream inhibitors; and immunotherapies and …

Too Good To Be White: A Journey To Lose Identity In Tony Morrison’S The Bluest Eye, Rasha Maqableh, Aya Akkawi

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

The history of African-American is a record of struggle for the right of existence and acknowledgement. An integral part of that struggle is the enforcement of the values and standards of the dominant ideals of white culture that made it impossible for African-Americans to hold on their identity. In The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison focuses on the difficulties, facing women, in obtaining identity and self esteem in a society dominated by white ethnocentrism. This paper aims at displaying the hardships and challenges of Black female characters in a world dominated by a complicated system of race, class and sex oppression …

Institutionalized Religion And Ambivalence In Charlotte Brontë’S Jane Eyre, Abdulla Dagamseh Feb 2023

Institutionalized Religion And Ambivalence In Charlotte Brontë’S Jane Eyre, Abdulla Dagamseh

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

In Charlotte Brontë’s novel, Jane Eyre, the protagonist, Jane Eyre, cannot avoid the trap of empire, which represents the British colonial domination in the 19 th century. Through close reading of the text and using Postcolonial and Marxist theory, I claim that Jane Eyre develops an ambivalent attitude towards oppression. That is to say, she, at one point, is very critical of using religion to oppress her own people. On the other hand, she keeps silent when the same discourse of institutionalized religion is used to justify colonizing and oppressing other people and nations. This ambivalent attitude shows that the …

Notes On The Translations Of Sūrat Al-Inshiqāq, Rema El-Isa Feb 2023

Notes On The Translations Of Sūrat Al-Inshiqāq, Rema El-Isa

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

This paper conducts a comparative study about four translations of sūrat alInshiqāq: Yousef Ali, Muhammad Hilali-Muhsin Khan, Pickthall and Mohammad Abdel Haleem. Multiple opinions of exposition have been provided to explore how, in certain ayas, the translators fail to find an appropriate equivalent. The translations' problems are categorized into lexical, stylistic and syntactic problems, whereas these categories also have sub-categories in order to clarify the gaps that might be encountered while translating the Qur'anic text. The problems are investigated through the theories of free and bound translation. Since religious texts, especially the sacred ones, are contextbased, they have different meanings …

This paper will analyze the People Republic of China's (PRC) position toward international hegemony in the context of the PRC's global perspective since its establishment in 1949 until the end of 2018. The study aims to expose China's attempts to oppose this hegemony throughout the Cold War by forming a "united front" against the two superpowers: the United States and the Soviet Union. Furthermore, it aims to clarify why China has abandoned this strategy and has called for a "harmonious world" since 2005. The study is based on the premise that "the more China benefits from the hegemony of the …

This study investigates the variable subject-verb agreement in existential constructions in the Corpus of Contemporary American-English (COCA). While variable subject-verb agreement in existential constructions has been extensively studied in many varieties of English, we study this variation in a particular corpus to find out the correlation between the distribution of the standard and non-standard subject-verb agreement variants in American-English and a number of linguistic factors (tense, contraction, kind of plural and adjacency of subject and verb). To achieve this goal, a total of 375 tokens of standard and non-standard agreement in existential constructions are extracted from the corpus and coded …

Motherland Is Out Of Place A Study Of Said’S Autobiography, Ahlam Masad Feb 2023

Motherland Is Out Of Place A Study Of Said’S Autobiography, Ahlam Masad

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

Based on analyzing the images and conceptions perceived in Edward Said's Out of Place, this paper attempts to explore the reasons why Said does not attach himself to a specific place of identity or to a nostalgic restored place described as the lost place. These reasons are a unique layout Said portrayed to deal with the place. They also show an intense paradox of the image represented in various cultural classical literature tackling the relationship between man in exile, place, and motherland. Thus, Said presented a new image of his relationship with place in line with the different spatial frameworks …

Between Arabic And Hebrew: Language Choices For Iraqijewish Writers After Their Immigration To Israel, Mahmoud Amarat, Mohammad Nusairat Feb 2023

Between Arabic And Hebrew: Language Choices For Iraqijewish Writers After Their Immigration To Israel, Mahmoud Amarat, Mohammad Nusairat

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

Since its inception, the Israeli society has been a strange and heterogenous mixture of immigrants from different countries. The Iraqi-Jewish stratum is among the main social strata of the society. It has included a considerable number of fiction writers and poets facing serious issues after their immigration to Israel. Among these issues are attempts to marginalize and wipe out Arabic from Jewish literature. Hence, these attempts force many writers to abandon writing in Arabic and replacing it with Hebrew. It is noticeable, however, that even after the transfer of those writers and poets to write in Hebrew, the spirit of …
