A Space For Partnership And Empowerment: How The Writing Café Negotiates Inclusion In Higher Education, Cara Baer, Nina Kearney
A Space For Partnership And Empowerment: How The Writing Café Negotiates Inclusion In Higher Education, Cara Baer, Nina Kearney
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Higher education (HE) has traditionally been shaped for a specific type of student, but as widening participation initiatives are increasingopportunitiesfor under-represented groups to attend (e.g., mature, disabled, those from a low socio-economicbackground,and care leavers), it is imperative to illuminate examples of best practice that are accessible and equitable once students are at university. This paper discusses the Writing Café, an interdisciplinary, peer facilitated space for students to explore writing techniques and strategies with trained student writing mentors. This will illustrate how the Writing Café is promoting inclusion for students who have been traditionally excluded from HE.The Writing Café encourages student …
Initial Development Of A Patient-Reported Experience Measure For Older Adults Attending The Emergency Department: Part Ii—Focus Groups With Professional Caregivers, Blair Graham, Jason E. Smith, Pam Nelmes, Rosalyn Squire, Jos M. Latour
Initial Development Of A Patient-Reported Experience Measure For Older Adults Attending The Emergency Department: Part Ii—Focus Groups With Professional Caregivers, Blair Graham, Jason E. Smith, Pam Nelmes, Rosalyn Squire, Jos M. Latour
Peninsula Medical School
A wide range of healthcare professionals provide care for patients in the emergency department (ED). This study forms part of a wider exploration of the determinants of patient experience for older adults in the ED, to assist the development of a new patient-reported experience measure (PREM). Inter-professional focus groups aimed to build on findings from earlier interviews with patients conducted in the ED, by exploring professional perspectives on caring for older people in this setting. A total of thirty-seven clinicians, comprising nurses, physicians and support staff, participated in seven focus groups across three EDs in the United Kingdom (UK). The …

Medical Student Perceptions Of Autism Education: A Qualitative Study, L Gallaher, C Butler, S Banerjee, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Background: The global prevalence of autism is reported to be at least 1% and is rising. Autistic people have a range of comorbidities resulting in a high use of health services. Doctors of nearly all specialties are likely to encounter autistic people in their practice. Autistic people report dissatisfactory care and encounter disproportionately worse health-related outcomes than non-autistic people, which in part has been attributed to a lack of skill and awareness in the medical workforce. At present, autism education is not always included in undergraduate medical curricula. In England, the Department of Health and Social Care has mandated that …

Does The Potocki-Lupski Syndrome Convey The Autism Spectrum Disorder Phenotype? Case Report And Scoping Review, Daria A Martynova, Olga V Sysoeva, Elena L Grigorenko
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Potocki-Lupski Syndrome (PTLS) is a rare condition associated with a duplication of 17p11.2 that may underlie a wide range of congenital abnormalities and heterogeneous behavioral phenotypes. Along with developmental delay and intellectual disability, autism-specific traits are often reported to be the most common among patients with PTLS. To contribute to the discussion of the role of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the PTLS phenotype, we present a case of a female adolescent with a de novo dup(17) (p11.2p11.2) without ASD features, focusing on in-depth clinical, behavioral, and electrophysiological (EEG) evaluations. Among EEG features, we found the atypical peak-slow wave patterns …

Remarkable complete response rates have been shown with tisagenlecleucel, a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy targeting CD19, in patients up to age 26 years with refractory/relapsed B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia; it is US Food and Drug Administration approved for this indication. Currently, patients receive a single dose of tisagenlecleucel across a wide dose range of 0.2 to 5.0 × 106 and 0.1 to 2.5 × 108 CAR T cells per kg for patients ≤50 and >50 kg, respectively. The effect of cell dose on survival and remission is not yet well established. Our primary goal was to determine if …

Types Of Physical Activity In Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease And All-Cause And Cardiovascular Mortality, George Cholankeril, Aijaz Ahmed
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
The impact of different types of physical activity (PA) on mortality in the context of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is not clearly defined and was investigated. This prospective study was performed using the 2007–2014 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with mortality follow-up through 2019. Over a median follow-up of 8.6 years, leisure-time and transportation-related PA that fulfilled the criteria outlined in the PA guidelines (≥150 min/week) in NAFLD were associated with a risk reduction in all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.76, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.59–0.98 for leisure-time PA; HR: 0.62, 95% CI: 0.45–0.86 for transportation-related PA). …

Critical Choices: An Attempt At Understanding What I'M Trying To Understand Through Drawing Through Drawing, Amy Yeager
Theses and Dissertations
Saying “I’ve always drawn” feels stupid but it’s true. I have always drawn. I’ve spent my whole life using drawing to understand, and this thesis is no exception. Through the conventions of comic, I explore my current practice which concerns death, memorial, the ground, and an examination of the routines and rituals that lead me there. I believe in reverent observation and intentional, meticulous mark-making, driven by an understanding that what I am looking at cannot look back, at least in a human sense. Inspired by the obsessive and thorough artists Ellen Altfest, Josephine Halvorson, and Vija Celmins, I cultivate …

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Carney complex is rare neoplastic disorder. Intracardiac myxoma presenting the most common non-cutaneous lesions in this complex. We are reporting a 31-year-old Saudi female known case of Carney complex presented with asymptomatic biatrial myxoma that was identified on routine transthoracic echocardiogram, and was successfully excised. However, these patients need a careful surveillance in order to detect any new masses and prevent their complications.

Choosing Future – Climate Adaptation Justice & Transformation, A.R. Siders
Sustainability Seminar Series
Adaptation to climate change has, to date, generally sought to maintain the status quo. Future adaptation could involve radical shifts in society and socio-ecological systems, but what are the pros and cons of such transformations? What does fair, equitable, or just adaptation involve and is it possible? Dr. Siders will describe emerging dilemmas in the debate about adaptation justice and suggest pathways to envision a broader range of futures we can choose.

Voice input is a convenient mode that enables users to overcome literacy and/or accessibility barriers because it is typically easier than typing and enables hands-free use of the device. On devices such as smartphones or tablets, a virtual keyboard with voice input capability is convenient and enables voice input to be provided to any application. However, virtual keyboard voice interfaces lack editing capabilities, often requiring users to start from scratch multiple times because of input mistakes, transcription errors, or automatic turning off of the microphone during pauses. This disclosure describes techniques that automatically provide users with suggestions for edits, deletions, …
