An Experimental Test Of Algorithmic Dismissals, Brice Corgnet
An Experimental Test Of Algorithmic Dismissals, Brice Corgnet
ESI Working Papers
We design a laboratory experiment in which a human or an algorithm decides which of two workers to dismiss. The algorithm automatically dismisses the least productive worker whereas human bosses have full discretion over their decisions. Using performance metrics and questionnaires, we find that fired workers react more negatively to human than to algorithmic decisions in a broad range of tasks. We show that spitefulness exacerbated this negative reaction. Our findings suggest algorithms could help tame negative reactions to dismissals.

In this study, we analysed the cognitive abilities that predict reading and writing attainment in the Chinese language for Mandarin-speaking children. A total of 140 Chinese third-graders studying in Ningbo, Zhejiang were evaluated for their visual cognition including visual perception and memory, naming speed, vocabulary knowledge, phonological skills, nonverbal intelligence, and abilities to read and write. The results of multiple regression analyses revealed that word and nonword reading accuracy were predicted to a significant degree by visual memory and phonological awareness, respectively. Naming speed significantly contributed to the reading speeds regarding words, nonwords, and paragraphs. Our results also showed that …

A person who experiences hearing loss that hinders the process of language information through hearing, whether wearing a hearing aid or not wearing a hearing aid. Whereas someone who lacks hearing is someone who usually uses a hearing aid, the rest of their hearing is enough to allow for the success of the language process through hearing. Language development is a complex process and is something interesting to study. The same goes for the language development of deaf children. So with the problems that occur in deaf children that will also have an impact on how deaf children learn, there …

The direct impact of hearing loss is the inability/difficulty to catch various sounds, including the sound of the language. Those with hearing impairments must be made aware of sound, especially children classified as hard of hearing, whose remaining hearing must be stimulated to train their sensitivity so that their hearing function can be optimized. Therefore, they are given special services in the form Development of Communication, Perception of Sound and Rhythm. The program provided must be under their learning conditions …

Myelin Lipid Metabolism And Its Role In Myelination And Myelin Maintenance, Joseph A Barnes-Vélez, Fatma Betul Aksoy Yasar, Jian Hu
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Myelin is a specialized cell membrane indispensable for rapid nerve conduction. The high abundance of membrane lipids is one of myelin's salient features that contribute to its unique role as an insulator that electrically isolates nerve fibers across their myelinated surface. The most abundant lipids in myelin include cholesterol, glycosphingolipids, and plasmalogens, each playing critical roles in myelin development as well as function. This review serves to summarize the role of lipid metabolism in myelination and myelin maintenance, as well as the molecular determinants of myelin lipid homeostasis, with an emphasis on findings from genetic models. In addition, the implications …

More medical schools are incorporating wellness activities and the medical humanities into their curriculum. Finding implementable programming that is feasible and enjoyable is challenging. Both student participants and faculty who might facilitate programs are busy with clinical and educational responsibilities. Book club discussions in general are an activity that bring people together and expose groups to literature. In medical education, informal books clubs have been shown to increase camaraderie and expose participants to topics in medicine that they may not have encountered without the structure of the group assignment. At one large private urban medical school, all fourth year medical …

Crispr, Like Any Other Technology: Shedding Determinism & Reviving Athens, Jon Khan
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
This article examines current narratives surrounding CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) and the current Canadian treatment of this novel biotechnology. It argues that Canada’s current approach to genetic research and CRISPR appear to have succumbed to the false narrative of technological determinism. It argues that Canada must buck the narrative and alter the current status quo in two principal ways: Canada should pursue more somatic CRISPR clinical trials in humans and permit pre-clinical germline editing. To design a regulatory regime for clinical germline editing and better guidance on somatic CRISPR clinical trials, Canada should engage Deliberative Polling to …

In April 2022, the countdown of the climate clock began according to the preview of the current global effects, which could be slowed down with strategic actions, planning, and the participation of all. To achieve this, the commitment to sustainability of governments is imperative, and their active digital presence to stir consciences and cause changes in consump-tion. The objective of this work is to observe the advantages of digital marketing in the G2C (government-citizen) relationship, to create campaigns that promote reasoned and sustainable consumption, and thus contribute to safeguarding the planet.

Dissertations
The stress and burden experienced by the family caregiver during the caregiving experience has been widely researched and established among the literature. Limited research exists on the impact of cultural values, religiosity and family caregiving on the caregiver's positive appraisal of caring for a dependent elderly family member. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the influence of cultural values and religiosity on the positive appraisal of caregiving among African American, Hispanic and Caucasian caregivers for dependent elderly family members. A predictive correlational study design was employed to examine the relationship amongst variables for 69 African-American, Hispanic and …

Background: Previous studies have indicated that lower lung function is related to a higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). However, causal inferences may be affected by confounders, coheritability or reverse causality. We aimed to explore the causal association between lung function and VTE. Methods: Summary data from public genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for lung function and VTE were obtained from published meta-analysis studies and the FinnGen consortium, respectively. Independent genetic variables significantly related to exposure were filtered as proxy instruments. We adopted linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) and two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to infer the genetic backgrounds and causal …
