Origami-Inspired Sacrificial Joints For Folding Compliant Mechanisms, Todd G. Nelson, Alex Avila, Larry L. Howell, Just L. Herder, Davood Farhadi Machekposhtic

Faculty Publications

Folding is a manufacturing method which can create complex 3D geometries from flat materi- als and can be particularly useful in cost-sensitive or planar-limited fabrication applications.

This paper introduces compliant mechanisms that employ folding techniques from origami to evolve from a flat material to deployed state. We present origami-inspired sacrificial joints, joints which have mobility during assembly of the mechanism but are rigid in their final position, to create regions of high and low stiffness and the proper alignment of compliant flexures in folded mechanisms. To demonstrate the method we fold steel sheet to create some well-known and complex compliant …

An Autoethnographic Reflection From Two Black Women Ph.D.’S And Their White Woman Advisor On The Use And Impact Of Sista Circle Methodology In The Dissertation Process, B. Nathan, Rashida Love, Laurie A. Carlson Jan 2023

An Autoethnographic Reflection From Two Black Women Ph.D.’S And Their White Woman Advisor On The Use And Impact Of Sista Circle Methodology In The Dissertation Process, B. Nathan, Rashida Love, Laurie A. Carlson

The Qualitative Report

Black Women doctoral students experience the journey as “outsiders within” (Collins, 1986), navigating how to excel and thrive while being on the margins (hooks, 1991). The authors of this manuscript reflect upon the impact of adopting a culturally relevant methodology and method, integrating various forms of Black Women’s art, and challenging tenets of traditional western research. An auto-ethnographic exercise illuminated the critical need for Nathan and Love to insert their Black Womanhood into their dissertation research process using Sista Circle Methodology, an active decision to decolonize research. Carlson provided a critical link to ensuring Nathan and Love graduated and provides …

At The Heart Of The Diagnosis: A Case Of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Presenting As Cardiac Tamponade, Jose Gomez Casanovas, Mery Bartl, Laura Rincon-Rueda, Christine E. Loftis, Emilia Dulgheru

School of Medicine Publications

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogenous, systemic disease characterized by the production of pathogenic autoantibodies against nuclear antigens. Although the most common cardiac manifestation of SLE is pericardial effusions, their progression to cardiac tamponade is rare and has an incidence between 1-3%. We describe a case of a 42-year-old Hispanic woman who presented with severe shortness of breath, vague chest pain, and hemodynamic compromise secondary to cardiac tamponade. The patient's underlying etiology of cardiac tamponade was attributed to a new diagnosis of SLE based on the 2019 European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology/American College of Rheumatology classification (EULAR/ACR) criteria …

Normalized Coordinate Equations And Energy Method For Predicting Natural Curved-Fold Configurations, Jacob Badger, Todd G. Nelson, Rober J. Lang, Denise M. Halverson, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

Of the many valid configurations that a curved fold may assume, it is of particular interest to identify natural—or lowest energy—configurations that physical models will preferentially assume. We present normalized coordinate equations—equations that relate fold surface properties

to their edge of regression—to simplify curved-fold rela- tionships. An energy method based on these normalized

coordinate equations is developed to identify natural con- figurations of general curved folds. While it has been noted

that natural configurations have nearly planar creases for curved folds, we show that non-planar behavior near the crease ends substantially reduces the energy of a fold.

Persistent Reshaping Of Cohesive Sediment Towards Stable Flocs By Turbulence, M Yu, X Yu, Aj Mehta, Aj Manning, F Khan, S Balachandar

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

AbstractCohesive sediment forms flocs of various sizes and structures in the natural turbulent environment. Understanding flocculation is critical in accurately predicting sediment transport and biogeochemical cycles. In addition to aggregation and breakup, turbulence also reshapes flocs toward more stable structures. An Eulerian–Lagrangian framework has been implemented to investigate the effect of turbulence on flocculation by capturing the time-evolution of individual flocs. We have identified two floc reshaping mechanisms, namely breakage-regrowth and restructuring by hydrodynamic drag. Surface erosion is found to be the primary breakup mechanism for strong flocs, while fragile flocs tend to split into fragments of similar sizes. Aggregation …

Cybersecurity Risk Assessment Of Vdr, Ömer Söner, Gizem Kayisoglu, Pelin Bolat, Kimberly Tam

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The voyage data recorder (VDR) is a data recording system that aims to provide all navigational, positional, communicational, sensor, control and command information for data-driven investigation of accidents onboard ships. Due to the increasing dependence on interconnected networks, cybersecurity threats are one of the most severe issues and critical problems when it comes to safeguarding sensitive information and assets. Cybersecurity issues are extremely important for the VDR, considering that modern VDRs may have internet connections for data transfer, network links to the ship's critical systems and the capacity to record potentially sensitive data. Thus, this research adopted failure modes and …

Pervasiveness Of Effects In Sample-Based Experimental Psychology: A Re-Examination Of Replication Data From Nine Famous Psychology Experiments, Samantha Moore, Craig P. Speelman, Marek Mcgann

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Data previously reported from successful replications of 9 famous experiments (Zwaan et al., 2018) were re-analysed. Rather than the null hypothesis significance tests performed in the original study, this study performed a pervasiveness analysis, which examined the number of people in the original samples that demonstrated the effect each experiment is renowned for. Seven of the 9 experiments were shown to exceed the pervasiveness threshold adopted in this study. That is, in each of these 7 experiments, over 80 % of participants demonstrated the target effect, indicating support for Zwaan et al.’s claim that these effects are robust. The remaining …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Introduction: Seabirds are abundant, conspicuous members of marine ecosystems worldwide. Synthesis of distribution data compiled over time is required to address regional management issues and understand ecosystem change. Major challenges when estimating seabird densities at sea arise from variability in dispersion of the birds, sampling effort over time and space, and differences in bird detection rates associated with survey vessel type.

Methods: Using a novel approach for modeling seabirds at sea, we applied joint dynamic species distribution models (JDSDM) with a vector-autoregressive spatiotemporal framework to survey data collected over nearly five decades and archived in the North Pacific Pelagic Seabird …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Mutations in the MECP2 gene underlie a spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders, most commonly Rett syndrome (RTT). We ask whether MECP2 mutations interfere with human astrocyte developmental maturation, thereby affecting their ability to support neurons. Using human-based models, we show that RTT-causing MECP2 mutations greatly impact the key role of astrocytes in regulating overall brain bioenergetics and that these metabolic aberrations are likely mediated by dysfunctional mitochondria. During post-natal maturation, astrocytes rely on neurons to induce their complex stellate morphology and transcriptional changes. While MECP2 mutations cause cell-intrinsic aberrations in the astrocyte transcriptional landscape, surprisingly, they do not affect the neuron-induced …

Nonhuman Primate Genetic Models For The Study Of Rare Diseases, Eric J Vallender, Charlotte E Hotchkiss, Anne D Lewis, Jeffrey Rogers, Joshua A Stern, Samuel M Peterson, Betsy Ferguson, Ken Sayers

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Pre-clinical research and development relies heavily upon translationally valid models of disease. A major difficulty in understanding the biology of, and developing treatments for, rare disease is the lack of animal models. It is important that these models not only recapitulate the presentation of the disease in humans, but also that they share functionally equivalent underlying genetic causes. Nonhuman primates share physiological, anatomical, and behavioral similarities with humans resulting from close evolutionary relationships and high genetic homology. As the post-genomic era develops and next generation sequencing allows for the resequencing and screening of large populations of research animals, naturally occurring …

The Hepatic Mitochondrial Pyruvate Carrier As A Regulator Of Systemic Metabolism And A Therapeutic Target For Treating Metabolic Disease, Kyle S Mccommis, Brian N Finck Jan 2023

The Hepatic Mitochondrial Pyruvate Carrier As A Regulator Of Systemic Metabolism And A Therapeutic Target For Treating Metabolic Disease, Kyle S Mccommis, Brian N Finck

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Pyruvate sits at an important metabolic crossroads of intermediary metabolism. As a product of glycolysis in the cytosol, it must be transported into the mitochondrial matrix for the energy stored in this nutrient to be fully harnessed to generate ATP or to become the building block of new biomolecules. Given the requirement for mitochondrial import, it is not surprising that the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) has emerged as a target for therapeutic intervention in a variety of diseases characterized by altered mitochondrial and intermediary metabolism. In this review, we focus on the role of the MPC and related metabolic pathways …

The Phenomenon Of Stigmatization: The Case Oh Delinquency And Repeated Deeds In Tunisian Society, Ramzi Tej

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

The violations of regulatory rules, martial and religious laws, and social mores were among the reasons that led to the spread of various social phenomena. The latter contributed to social communication disorder and created immense abysses within societies such as immorality, violence and delinquency. Based on the explanatory theories of criminology or criminal sociology, the stigma of deviance was classified as a psychosocial disorder that the stigmatized suffers from, which had been confirmed by various researches starting from 1930s till 1950s. However, sociologists and experts in historical anthropology surpassed the concepts of linguistic terms, which were chiefly investigated by psychologists, …

Monitoring The Constitutionality Of Tax Laws In Palestine, Mohammed Hamdouna Jan 2023

Monitoring The Constitutionality Of Tax Laws In Palestine, Mohammed Hamdouna

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

The control over the constitutionality of laws in the tax field is one of the means to protect citizens in society from imposing a tax on them other than those provided for in the Constitution, which is different in quality from different legal systems, including the previous system of control over the constitutionality of laws. This is what follows the regime of subsequent control over the constitutionality of laws. The Palestinian legal system decided to subsequently monitor the constitutionality of laws, and this oversight does not achieve justice in the tax field, as it prejudices the two aspects of justice …

Jurgen Habermas And The Critical Theory: Philosophy And Freedom, Hamed Dababseh

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

The study seeks to clarify the role that philosophy occupied in critical theory in its second phase at the hands of Jürgen Habermas; especially its role in advocating for the emancipation of human beings and societies through new tools, after the theory suffered from pessimism and negativity at its beginning. This role has become more realistic after philosophy realized its new role in being a partner with other knowledge, and the interaction with this knowledge, especially the technical ones, in terms of impact and influence between them. Habermas transcended the stance of the first theory, led it to new courses, …

Fungsi Dan Kedudukan Bahasa Mandarin Di Indonesia, Hermina Sutami Jan 2023

Fungsi Dan Kedudukan Bahasa Mandarin Di Indonesia, Hermina Sutami

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

Since Political Reformed in 1998, teaching of Mandarin language burst out everywhere. Many schools— from primary until senior high school, even kindergarten—teach Mandarin. Having skill in Mandarin has become one prerequisite for new employees recruitment. In order to anticipate this situation, many schoolmasters without having understanding about our National Language Political Policy thought that Mandarin should be taught. They do not know that after nearly 30 years Mandarin was prohibited, the teaching Mandarin planning is really hard to be realised. There is no Mandarin language teacher, text book for Indonesian students, curriculum and syllabus, etc. In fact, many schools try …

Kalimat Dengan Reduplikasi Verba, Hatmi Idris

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

When complement and object appears all together in one sentence, some verbs can be reduplicated, can not be reduplicated, or can be both reduplicated or not be reduplicated. Reduplicated verb’s example: Ta jiao zhongwen jiao le liang ge xiaoshi ‘He has been teaching Mandarin Chinese for two hours’. Verb can or can not be reduplicated depends on the complement types, the verb meaning and the object charactheristic. This paper will analyze this construction semantically, syntactically, and pragmatically.
