Origami-Based Design Of Conceal-And-Reveal Systems, Bryce P. Defigueiredo, Kyler A. Tolman, Spencer P. Magleby, Nathan A. Pehrson, Erica Crampton, Larry L. Howell Jan 2023

Origami-Based Design Of Conceal-And-Reveal Systems, Bryce P. Defigueiredo, Kyler A. Tolman, Spencer P. Magleby, Nathan A. Pehrson, Erica Crampton, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

This work introduces a type of motion termed “conceal-and-reveal” which is characterized by a state that protects a payload, a state that exposes the payload, and coupled motions between these two states. As techniques for thick, rigid origami-based engineering designs are being developed, origami is becoming increasingly more

attractive as inspiration for complex systems. This paper proposes a process for designing origami-based conceal- and-reveal systems, which can be generalized to design similar thick, rigid origami-based systems. The process

is demonstrated through the development of three conceal-and-reveal systems that present a luxury product to the consumer. The three designs also confirm …

Regional Stiffness Reduction Using Lamina Emergent Torsional Joints For Flexible Printed Circuit Board Design, Bryce P. Defigueiredo, Brian Dale Russell, Trent K. Zimmerman, Larry L. Howell Jan 2023

Regional Stiffness Reduction Using Lamina Emergent Torsional Joints For Flexible Printed Circuit Board Design, Bryce P. Defigueiredo, Brian Dale Russell, Trent K. Zimmerman, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

Flexible printed circuit boards (PCBs) make it possi- ble for engineers to design devices that use space efficiently

and can undergo changes in shape and configuration. How- ever, they also suffer from trade-offs due to non-ideal mate- rial properties. Here, a method is presented that allows en- gineers to introduce regions of flexibility in otherwise rigid

PCB substrates. This method employs geometric features to reduce local stiffness in the PCB, rather than reducing

the global stiffness by material selection. Analytical and fi- nite element models are presented to calculate the maximum

stresses caused by deflection. An example device is produced …

Kinematic/Static Model Of Complex Compliant Mechanisms With Serial-Parallel Substructures: A General Approach, Mingxiang Ling, Junyi Cao, Larry L. Howell Jan 2023

Kinematic/Static Model Of Complex Compliant Mechanisms With Serial-Parallel Substructures: A General Approach, Mingxiang Ling, Junyi Cao, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

Kinematic and static analyses of compliant mechanisms are crucial at the early stage of design, and it can be difficult and laborsome for complex configurations with distributed compliance. In this paper, a general and concise kinematic/static modeling method of flexure-hinge-based compliant mechanisms with arbitrary serial-parallel substructures is presented to provide accurate and efficient solutions by combining the matrix displacement method with the transfer matrix method. The transition between the elemental stiffness matrix and the transfer matrix of the flexure hinge and the flexible beam is straightforward, enabling the condensation of a hybrid serial-parallel substructure into one equivalent element simple. Then, …

Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND Fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) is commonly associated with elevated prothrombin time (PT) and international normalized ratio (INR). There is a commensurate decline in pro- and anti-hemostatic factors, and hemostatic function is rebalanced, not reflected in INR. This report presents the case of a 36-year-old woman with FHF following acetaminophen overdose, an increased INR above 8.7, and normal blood viscosity measured by rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM). CASE REPORT A 36-year-old woman presented with FHF following an acetaminophen overdose. On arrival, she was lethargic but arousable and followed commands. Her King's College Criteria for acetaminophen toxicity was 2 and her MELD score …

Research on the political science profession has shown that homophilous research networks—that is, those organized along the lines of gender and race/ethnicity—reproduce hierarchies. Research networks composed of white men experience the most prestige and lead to the most opportunities. This study documents homophilous networks in a setting where they likely are nurtured: academic conferences. Drawing data from the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association, we examine the correspondence between the gender and the racial/ethnic composition of section members, panelists, and audience members for four research sections: Political Methodology; Political Psychology; Race, Ethnicity, and Politics; and Women and …

What Drives Larval Condition For Northern Anchovy (Engraulis Mordax)? Implications For Coastal Pelagic Species Recruitment Fluctuations And Fishery Management Practices, Michelle Robidas Jan 2023

What Drives Larval Condition For Northern Anchovy (Engraulis Mordax)? Implications For Coastal Pelagic Species Recruitment Fluctuations And Fishery Management Practices, Michelle Robidas

Theses

Discerning the causes of population boom and bust cycles for coastal pelagic species (CPS) has been a major focus of fisheries management research for over a century. Year-class strength is contingent on larval survival and condition, which can be influenced by larval size at age and growth rate. These two factors, in turn, can be affected by maternal investment and environmental variables such as water temperature, salinity, oxygen, and chlorophyll a. We evaluated each of these factors from 127 two to eight week-old Northern Anchovy (Engraulis mordax) larvae off the coast of San Diego to San Francisco, …

Strategies To Decrease Drug Diversion Among Anesthesia Providers, Cat Mueller Jan 2023

Strategies To Decrease Drug Diversion Among Anesthesia Providers, Cat Mueller

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a complicated and detrimental disease that disproportionately affects certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). Long work hours, lack of sleep, inadequate work-life balance, maladaptive coping skills, and burnout are factors associated with SUD. Personal factors include personality type, family or personal history of addiction, inadequate support system, underlying psychological disorders or history of trauma. There is a higher incidence of death from overdose with anesthesia providers than any other subspecialty. Drug diversion is a consequence of SUD and is defined as the redirection of medication from its intended destination for personal use, sale, or distribution. Consequences …

Methods To Appropriately Size Pediatric Endotracheal Tubes, Laura Crump Jan 2023

Methods To Appropriately Size Pediatric Endotracheal Tubes, Laura Crump

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Incorrect sizing of pediatric endotracheal tubes (ETTs) can result in serious complications and significantly increase morbidity and mortality. Problematically, there is no consensus on a standardized formula or method to assist providers in the selection of appropriate pediatric ETT size. Historically, providers have used age-based formulas (ABFs), height-based formulas, and other methods to predict appropriate ETT size. However, these formulas and methods are frequently inaccurate and can't be extrapolated to all pediatric patients.

Due to the significant complications that can result from inappropriately sized pediatric ETTs, the accuracy of traditional formulas and methods should be evaluated, and new methods should …

Dietary Effects On Pain Symptoms In Patients With Fibromyalgia Syndrome: Systematic Review And Future Directions., Emma K. Maddox, Shawn C. Massoni, Cara M. Hoffart, Yumie Takata

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is recognized for its difficulty to diagnose and its subjective symptomatology. There is neither a known cure nor a recommended therapeutic diet to aid in the multidisciplinary treatment. We conducted a systematic review to investigate if diets can improve pain symptoms of fibromyalgia. Through the PubMed search in March 2022, 126 abstracts were identified. We included both intervention and observational studies of diets and pain symptoms among patients with FMS. After screening titles, abstracts, and full-texts, 12 studies, including 11 intervention and one observational study, were selected. These studies included 546 participants and investigated plant-based diets ( …

Utility Of Fetal Echocardiography With Acute Maternal Hyperoxygenation Testing In Assessment Of Complex Congenital Heart Defects., Sheetal R. Patel, Nitin Madan, Pei-Ni Jone, Mary T. Donofrio

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Fetal echocardiography is an excellent tool for accurately assessing the anatomy and physiology of most congenital heart defects (CHDs). Knowledge gathered from a thorough initial fetal echocardiogram and serial assessment assists with appropriate perinatal care planning, resulting in improved postnatal outcomes. However, fetal echocardiography alone provides limited information about the status of the pulmonary vasculature, which can be abnormal in certain complex CHDs with obstructed pulmonary venous flow (hypoplastic left heart syndrome with restrictive atrial septum) or excessive pulmonary artery flow (d-transposition of the great arteries, usually with a restrictive ductus arteriosus). Fetuses with these CHDs are at high risk …

A Pseudo-Static Model For Dynamic Analysis On Frequency Domain Of Distributed Compliant Mechanisms, Mingxiang Ling, Larry L. Howell, June Cao, Zhou Jiang Jan 2023

A Pseudo-Static Model For Dynamic Analysis On Frequency Domain Of Distributed Compliant Mechanisms, Mingxiang Ling, Larry L. Howell, June Cao, Zhou Jiang

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a pseudo-static modeling methodology for dynamic analysis of distributed compliant mechanisms to provide accurate and efficient solutions. First, a dynamic stiffness matrix of the flexible beam is deduced, which has the same definition and a similar form as the traditional static compliance/stiffness matrix but is frequency-dependent. Second, the pseudo-static modeling procedure for the dynamic analysis is implemented in a statics-similar way. Then, all the kinematic, static and dynamic performances of compliant mechanisms can be analyzed based on the pseudo- static model. The superiority of the proposed method is that when it is used for the dynamic modeling …

The Trouble With Time Served, Kimberly Kessler Ferzan Jan 2023

The Trouble With Time Served, Kimberly Kessler Ferzan

BYU Law Review

Every jurisdiction in the United States gives criminal defendants "credit" against their sentence for the time they spend detained pretrial. In a world of mass incarceration and overcriminalization that disproportionately impacts people of color, this practice appears to be a welcome mechanism for mercy and justice. In fact, how ever, crediting detainees for time served is perverse. It harms the innocent. A defendant who is found not guilty, or whose case is dismissed, gets nothing. Crediting time served also allows the state to avoid internalizing the full costs of pretrial detention, thereby making overinclusive detention standards less expensive. Finally, crediting …

Intraoperative And Postoperative Analgesia In Nuss Bar Procedure, Carlie Copeland Jan 2023

Intraoperative And Postoperative Analgesia In Nuss Bar Procedure, Carlie Copeland

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Pectus excavatum (PE), a congenital deformity characterized by anterior chest wall concavity, is common in pediatric surgery with a prevalence of 6.3 to 12 per 1000 children and a 6:1 partiality for males. The standard technique for PE correction is the minimally invasive Nuss approach that involves placement of a contoured bar to create an outward force on the concaved sternum. The severe, acute surgical pain can be managed through various techniques including thoracic epidural and cryoablation. In Nuss bar patients, does cryoablation therapy result in less opioid administration in the 72-hour postoperative period and shorter hospitalization than thoracic epidural? …
