Network Analysis Examining Intrahospital Traffic Of Patients With Traumatic Hip Fracture, Elizabeth A. Secor, David Hamilton, Cecile D'Huyvetter, Kristin Salottolo, David Bar-Or

GME Publications

Introduction: Increased intrahospital traffic (IHT) is associated with adverse events and infections in hospitalized patients. Network science has been used to study patient flow in hospitals but not specifically for patients with traumatic injuries.

Methods: This retrospective analysis included 103 patients with traumatic hip fractures admitted to a level I trauma center between April 2021 and September 2021. Associations with IHTs (moves within the hospital) were analyzed using R (4.1.2) as a weighted directed graph.

Results: The median (interquartile range) number of moves was 8 (7–9). The network consisted of 16 distinct units and showed mild disassortativity (−0.35), similar to …

Background: To optimize patients' functional external rotation outcomes, reverse total shoulder arthroplasties (rTSAs) including a latissimus dorsi tendon transfer were undertaken with promising early results and no significant increase in complications in comparison to traditional rTSAs. This was especially utilized for patients with a pronounced combined loss of elevation and external rotation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and synthesize the findings of all relevant publications assessing the outcomes of rTSAs with associated latissimus dorsi transfer.

Methods: We thoroughly searched the literature within the PubMed database using a standardized methodology. For our inclusion criteria, we included any study …

When Shortness Of Breath Gets Misdiagnosed: Atrial Myxoma Case Report, Sahaam Mirza, Tori Tyler, Robert Stauffer Feb 2023

When Shortness Of Breath Gets Misdiagnosed: Atrial Myxoma Case Report, Sahaam Mirza, Tori Tyler, Robert Stauffer

Student Publications

The vague presentation of an atrial myxoma makes accurate diagnosis difficult. This case report reviews the case of a 54-year-old female who presented to the Emergency Department complaining of shortness of breath and back pain. Prior to her Emergency Department evaluation, she had been given a diagnosis with pneumonia. Upon further evaluation, she was diagnosed with a large left atrial myxoma that was surgically removed via median sternotomy. After recovering from her surgery, the patient had a full resolution of her symptoms. Although the treatment for myxomas has a high success rate of full recovery, the difficulty in diagnosis poses …

Combinatorial Identities Associated With A Bivariate Generating Function For Overpartition Pairs, Atul Dixit, Ankush Goswami Feb 2023

Combinatorial Identities Associated With A Bivariate Generating Function For Overpartition Pairs, Atul Dixit, Ankush Goswami

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We obtain a three-parameter q-series identity that generalizes two results of Chan and Mao. By specializing our identity, we derive new results of combinatorial significance in connection with N(r,s,m,n), a function counting certain overpartition pairs recently introduced by Bringmann, Lovejoy and Osburn. For example, one of our identities gives a closed-form evaluation of a double series in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, thereby resulting in an analogue of Euler's pentagonal number theorem. Another of our results expresses a multi-sum involving N(r,s,m,n) in terms of just the partition function p(n). Using a result of Shimura we also relate …

Coloring Complexes And Combinatorial Hopf Monoids, Jacob A. White Feb 2023

Coloring Complexes And Combinatorial Hopf Monoids, Jacob A. White

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We generalize the notion of a coloring complex of a graph to linearized combinatorial Hopf monoids. We determine when a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid has such a construction, and discover some inequalities that are satisfied by the quasisymmetric function invariants associated to the combinatorial Hopf monoid. We show that the collection of all such coloring complexes forms a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid, which is the terminal object in the category of combinatorial Hopf monoids with convex characters. We also study several examples of combinatorial Hopf monoids.

On Viscoelastic Fiber Jet Formation By Forcespinning At High Rotation Rate, Daniel N. Riahi, Saulo Orizaga Feb 2023

On Viscoelastic Fiber Jet Formation By Forcespinning At High Rotation Rate, Daniel N. Riahi, Saulo Orizaga

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We consider a nonlinear three-dimensional viscoelastic fiber jet that is generated during a forcespinning process. We provide a particular case for such a rotating jet at a high rotation rate. We use a viscoelastic constitutive model for the jet equations and then applying a new slender body approach, we continue with proper scaling and perturbation technique to develop a new model for such a jet system. We find that the profiles for jet quantities versus arc length are notably different from all those in related studies reported before for either high or low rotation rates. In particular, jet radius first …

Social prescribing is a non-clinical approach to addressing social, environmental, and economic factors affecting how people feel physical and/or emotionally. It involves connecting people to ?community assets? (e.g., local groups, organizations, and charities) that can contribute to positive well-being. We sought to explain in what ways, for whom, and why the cultural sector can support social prescribing with older people. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 28 older people (aged 60+) and 25 cultural sector staff. The following nine concepts, developed from interview data, progressed the understanding of tailoring cultural offers, which came from our previous realist review?immersion, buddying, café culture, …

Ash Aerosol Particle Size Distribution, Composition, And Deposition Behavior While Co-Firing Coal And Steam-Exploded Biomass In A 1.5 Mwth Combustor, Rajarshi Roy, Brian Schooff, Xiaolong Li, Scott Montgomery, Jacob Tuttle, Jost O.L. Wendt, Kingsley Dickson, Brian Iverson, Andrew R. Fry

Faculty Publications

Five different blends of Utah bituminous coal and steam-exploded pine (100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, 0/100 by mass) were fired in a 1.5 MWth combustor. Primary objectives were to understand mineral matter behavior by analyzing aerosol size distribution, aerosol size-segregated composition, ash deposition mass, and ash composition. For particle size < 0.1 μm, pure coal had the lowest aerosol concentration and pure biomass showed the highest (higher nucleation of potassium salts), a trend which reversed for particles >0.1 μm. During pure biomass combustion, aerosol particles >15 μm contained higher mass fractions of potassium (+126%), calcium (+132%), and iron (+115%) and lower fractions of aluminum (−49%) and silicon (−29%) than pure coal. Ash deposition mass decreased with increasing biomass blends. …

Overexpression Of Both Human Sodium Iodide Symporter (Nis) And Brg1-Bromodomain Synergistically Enhances Radioiodine Sensitivity By Stabilizing P53 Through Npm1 Expression, J Na, C-H Lee, J-K Chung, H Youn Feb 2023

Overexpression Of Both Human Sodium Iodide Symporter (Nis) And Brg1-Bromodomain Synergistically Enhances Radioiodine Sensitivity By Stabilizing P53 Through Npm1 Expression, J Na, C-H Lee, J-K Chung, H Youn

Peninsula Medical School

Improved therapeutic strategies are required to minimize side effects associated with radioiodine gene therapy to avoid unnecessary damage to normal cells and radiation-induced secondary malignancies. We previously reported that codon-optimized sodium iodide symporter (oNIS) enhances absorption of I-131 and that the brahma-associated gene 1 bromodomain (BRG1-BRD) causes inefficient DNA damage repair after high-energy X-ray therapy. To increase the therapeutic effect without applying excessive radiation, we considered the combination of oNIS and BRG1-BRD as gene therapy for the most effective radioiodine treatment. The antitumor effect of I-131 with oNIS or oNIS+BRD expression was examined by tumor xenograft models along with functional …

Phenomics Enables Measurement Of Complex Responses Of Developing Animals To Global Environmental Drivers, Oliver Tills, Luke A. Holmes, Elliot Quinn, Tony Everett, Manuela Truebano, John I. Spicer

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Phenomics offers technological advances for high-dimensional phenotyping, facilitating rapid, high-throughput assessment of physiological performance and has proven invaluable in global research challenges including drug discovery and food security. However, this rapidly growing discipline has remained largely inaccessible to the increasingly urgent challenge of assessing organismal functional sensitivity to global change drivers. Here, we investigate the response of an ecologically important marine invertebrate to multiple environmental drivers using Energy Proxy Traits (EPTs), a new approach for measuring complex phenotypes captured on video as a spectrum of energy levels across different temporal frequencies in fluctuating pixel values. We imaged three developmental stages …

Prediction Models Of Shielding Effectiveness Of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Cement-Based Composites Against Electromagnetic Interference, Shilpa Narayanan, Yifan Zhang, Farhad Aslani

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

With the rapid development of communication technology as well as a rapid rise in the usage of electronic devices, a growth of concerns over unintentional electromagnetic interference emitted by these devices has been witnessed. Pioneer researchers have deeply studied the relationship between the shielding effectiveness and a few mixed design parameters for cementitious composites incoporating carbon fibres by conducting physical experiments. This paper, therefore, aims to develop and propose a series of prediction models for the shielding effectiveness of cementitious composites involving carbon fibres using frequency and mixed design parameters, such as the water-to-cement ratio, fibre content, sand-to-cement ratio and …

Transeuntis Mundi, A Nomadic Artistic Practice, Cândida Luiza Borges Da Silva

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

In this practice-led Ph.D. research, I investigate how an artistic practice can respond to the migration phenomena performed by human beings across the planet over millennia ¬– what I refer to as the millennial global human journey. Based on the idea of mobility, I chose to frame this research in the articulation of concepts deriving from the prefix trans: transculture, transhumance and transmediality. This research contributes to studies in art composition by developing the processes and concept of transmedial composition, mainly contributing to the field of New Media Art. This investigation resulted in the work Transeuntis Mundi (TM) Project – …
