Road Traffic Management Using Vehicle-To- Everything (V2x) Communication, Azzeddine Ben Khadra Feb 2023

Road Traffic Management Using Vehicle-To- Everything (V2x) Communication, Azzeddine Ben Khadra

Theses

Traffic congestion is the primary concern in dense cities; while the increased number of automobiles is becoming uncontrollable in some cities, it is more challenging to manage or change how people use cars. To contribute to solving traffic congestion in cities, this project examines the study of transferring vehicles to be competent in a way that can help the government entities analyze the received vehicles’ data and for better decisions on reducing traffic congestion as well as the real-time monitoring of traffic wherever it is located using the Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication methodology. This study proposes a hardware “system” that can …

Empirical Investigations And Dataset Collection For American Sign Language-Aware Personal Assistants, Abraham Trout Glasser

Theses

Proliferation of voice-controlled personal-assistant devices poses accessibility barriers for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) users. It is estimated that 128 million people use a voice assistant in the United States, and 4.2 billion digital voice assistants being used around the world, e.g. through over 60,000 different smart home devices that support Amazon's Alexa, which is one instance of virtual assistants [97,134]. The ongoing (at the time of this dissertation) coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the uptake of home-based, voice-controlled devices. As artificial intelligence researchers and developers are working on American Sign Language (ASL) recognition technologies, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research is …

Issue addressed: Locating fast-food outlets near schools is a potential public health risk to schoolchildren, given the easy access and repeated exposure to energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods they provide. Fast-food outlet availability near schools has not been previously investigated in Perth, Western Australia. This study aimed to quantify fast-food outlet availability near Perth schools and determine whether differences in area-level disadvantage and school type exist. Methods: Fast-food outlet locations were sourced from Perth Local Governments in 2018/2019. All Perth Primary (n = 454), Secondary (n = 107) and K-12 (n = 94) schools were assigned an area-level disadvantage decile ranking based …

Learning Relation Prototype From Unlabeled Texts For Long-Tail Relation Extraction, Yixin Cao, Jun Kuang, Ming Gao, Aoying Zhou, Yonggang Wen, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Relation Extraction (RE) is a vital step to complete Knowledge Graph (KG) by extracting entity relations from texts. However, it usually suffers from the long-tail issue. The training data mainly concentrates on a few types of relations, leading to the lack of sufficient annotations for the remaining types of relations. In this paper, we propose a general approach to learn relation prototypes from unlabeled texts, to facilitate the long-tail relation extraction by transferring knowledge from the relation types with sufficient training data. We learn relation prototypes as an implicit factor between entities, which reflects the meanings of relations as well …

Previous studies in mice have utilized Magel2 gene deletion models to examine the consequences of its absence. We report the generation, molecular validation and phenotypic characterization of a novel rat model with a truncating Magel2 mutation modeling variants associated with Schaaf-Yang syndrome-causing mutations. Within the hypothalamus, a brain region in which human MAGEL2 is paternally expressed, we demonstrated, at the level of transcript and peptide detection, that rat Magel2 exhibits a paternal, parent-of-origin effect. In evaluations of behavioral features across several domains, juvenile Magel2 mutant rats displayed alterations in anxiety-like behavior and sociability measures. Moreover, the analysis of peripheral organ …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Duloxetine (DLX) is widely used to treat major depressive disorder. Little is known about the mechanistic basis for DLX-related adverse effects (e.g., liver injury). Human CYP1A2 and CYP2D6 mainly contributes to DLX metabolism, which was proposed to be involved in its adverse effects. Here, we investigated the roles of Cyp1a2 and Cyp2d on DLX pharmacokinetic profile and tissue distribution using a Cyp1a2 knockout (Cyp1a2-KO) mouse model together with a Cyp2d inhibitor (propranolol). Cyp1a2-KO has the few effects on the systematic exposure (area under the plasma concentration-time curve, AUC) and tissue disposition of DLX and its primary metabolites. Propranolol dramatically increased …

Origin And Evolution Of Marsupial-Specific Imprinting Clusters Through Lineage-Specific Gene Duplications And Acquisition Of Promoter Differential Methylation, Wenqi Cao, Kory C. Douglas, Paul B. Samollow, John Vandeberg, Xu Wang, Andrew G. Clark Feb 2023

Origin And Evolution Of Marsupial-Specific Imprinting Clusters Through Lineage-Specific Gene Duplications And Acquisition Of Promoter Differential Methylation, Wenqi Cao, Kory C. Douglas, Paul B. Samollow, John Vandeberg, Xu Wang, Andrew G. Clark

School of Medicine Publications

Genomic imprinting is a parent-of-origin-specific expression phenomenon that plays fundamental roles in many biological processes. In animals, imprinting is only observed in therian mammals, with ∼200 imprinted genes known in humans and mice. The imprinting pattern in marsupials has been minimally investigated by examining orthologs to known eutherian imprinted genes. To identify marsupial-specific imprinting in an unbiased way, we performed RNA-seq studies on samples of fetal brain and placenta from the reciprocal cross progeny of two laboratory opossum stocks. We inferred allele-specific expression for >3,000 expressed genes and discovered/validated 13 imprinted genes, including three previously known imprinted genes, Igf2r, Peg10, …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

INTRODUCTION: Atrial fibrillation (AF) disproportionally affects persons on maintenance hemodialysis (HD). Associations of serum and dialysate potassium concentrations [K+] with AF incidence are poorly understood.

METHODS: We conducted a cohort study using Medicare claims merged with clinical data from a dialysis provider to determine whether serum-[K+] and/or dialysate-[K+] independently associated with AF incidence. Persons insured by fee-for-service Medicare aged ≥67 years at dialysis initiation and free from diagnosed AF prior to day 120 of dialysis were eligible. Serum-[K+] and dialysate-[K+] were assessed in 30-day intervals and patients were followed-up with for AF incidence in subsequent 30-day intervals.

RESULTS: During 2006 …

When Shortness Of Breath Gets Misdiagnosed: Atrial Myxoma Case Report, Sahaam Mirza, Tori Tyler, Robert Stauffer

Student Publications

The vague presentation of an atrial myxoma makes accurate diagnosis difficult. This case report reviews the case of a 54-year-old female who presented to the Emergency Department complaining of shortness of breath and back pain. Prior to her Emergency Department evaluation, she had been given a diagnosis with pneumonia. Upon further evaluation, she was diagnosed with a large left atrial myxoma that was surgically removed via median sternotomy. After recovering from her surgery, the patient had a full resolution of her symptoms. Although the treatment for myxomas has a high success rate of full recovery, the difficulty in diagnosis poses …

Combinatorial Identities Associated With A Bivariate Generating Function For Overpartition Pairs, Atul Dixit, Ankush Goswami Feb 2023

Combinatorial Identities Associated With A Bivariate Generating Function For Overpartition Pairs, Atul Dixit, Ankush Goswami

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We obtain a three-parameter q-series identity that generalizes two results of Chan and Mao. By specializing our identity, we derive new results of combinatorial significance in connection with N(r,s,m,n), a function counting certain overpartition pairs recently introduced by Bringmann, Lovejoy and Osburn. For example, one of our identities gives a closed-form evaluation of a double series in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, thereby resulting in an analogue of Euler's pentagonal number theorem. Another of our results expresses a multi-sum involving N(r,s,m,n) in terms of just the partition function p(n). Using a result of Shimura we also relate …

Coloring Complexes And Combinatorial Hopf Monoids, Jacob A. White

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We generalize the notion of a coloring complex of a graph to linearized combinatorial Hopf monoids. We determine when a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid has such a construction, and discover some inequalities that are satisfied by the quasisymmetric function invariants associated to the combinatorial Hopf monoid. We show that the collection of all such coloring complexes forms a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid, which is the terminal object in the category of combinatorial Hopf monoids with convex characters. We also study several examples of combinatorial Hopf monoids.

On Viscoelastic Fiber Jet Formation By Forcespinning At High Rotation Rate, Daniel N. Riahi, Saulo Orizaga

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We consider a nonlinear three-dimensional viscoelastic fiber jet that is generated during a forcespinning process. We provide a particular case for such a rotating jet at a high rotation rate. We use a viscoelastic constitutive model for the jet equations and then applying a new slender body approach, we continue with proper scaling and perturbation technique to develop a new model for such a jet system. We find that the profiles for jet quantities versus arc length are notably different from all those in related studies reported before for either high or low rotation rates. In particular, jet radius first …
