This qualitative study examined multilingual learner (ML) parent perspectives on family engagement. The purpose of this study was to determine the opportunities and barriers for parents in order to increase family engagement at a suburban school in Minnesota. The ML population is growing, and understanding how to effectively engage with parents has become increasingly critical. Despite research demonstrating that parent and family engagement impacts student success, parent voices are missing in the research. This study adds to the literature by offering perspectives from parents. Qualitative interviews and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis were used to answer the research questions. It is widely accepted that residents play an integral role in educating medical students.1 It is estimated that medical students receive approximately one-third of their clinical education from residents.2 It has been demonstrated that good education from residents positively impacts medical student clerkship satisfaction and influences career choices.2 Despite the fact that residents participate in educational responsibilities and many residents want to incorporate medical education into their future careers, residencies often do not have programs that provide a foundation for developing future medical educators.3 Dedicated programs may also serve as an avenue through which residents can explore medical education careers …

Adolescents’ contact with police is a complex outcome that is influenced by both individual behavior and the broader social context. Specifically, while delinquent behavior can lead to more police contact (Crutchfield et al., 2012), hyper-surveillance often occurs in marginalized communities, increasing unjustified police contact for youth of color (Campos-Manzo et al., 2020; Geller, 2021). Indeed, racial disparities in police contact during adolescence persist even after accounting for delinquent behavior (Campos-Manzo et al., 2020; Crutchfield et al., 2012). Background Complicated community-acquired pneumonia (cCAP)—defined by effusion, empyema, abscess, cavitation, or necrosis—is associated with worse outcomes than uncomplicated pneumonia. Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) data in cCAP are limited and often merged with uncomplicated cases. Although guidelines recommend MRSA coverage only in select cases, it is empirically used in >70% of encounters. Lack of pathogen identification likely drives overuse due to diagnostic uncertainty. Bacteriophages (phages) are ubiquitous viruses that require a host bacterial organism for replication, making them an essential component of the microbial ecosystem and used as tools for killing bacteria. Binge drinking, a public health concern in the United States, is associated with negative emotional and cognitive effects during alcohol withdrawal. These effects are believed to result from changes in brain regions involved in stress regulation, emotion, and decision-making, including the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. Alcohol exposure has been shown to increase neuroinflammation in these regions, which may contribute to anxiety-like behaviors and difficulty regulating emotions during withdrawal. In contrast, aerobic exercise is a promising non-pharmacological intervention that has been shown to reduce anxiety and support brain health. This review evaluates transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as a supplemental intervention for decreasing substance use disorder (SUD) relapse rates by synthesizing understandings of neurobiological mechanisms and clinical outcomes. TMS stimulates the activity of neural cells in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a small portion of the prefrontal cortex that houses impulse control and decision-making skills. This leads to improved neuroplasticity and dopamine regulation, both of which are disrupted by unregulated substance use. Although TMS is not FDA-approved for substance use disorder, the neurobiological similarities between SUD and its comorbidities like major depressive disorder or anxiety highlight TMS's theoretical potential to …

Training-induced adaptations in joint power distribution during speed running may enhance performance, but how these changes manifest across different American football position groups remains poorly understood. We investigated the influence of training and player position on joint power composition among players training for the National Football League draft. Forty-eight draft-eligible players performed pre- and post-training camp running trials at 23.4 km/h. We used motion capture software and MATLAB to calculate bilateral peak hip, knee, and ankle joint power. Executive functioning (EF) supports goal-directed behavior and is influenced by affective state. While prior research has largely focused on the effects of emotional valence during task performance, less is known about the influence of pre-task self-reported valence on subsequent EF performance. Our ongoing study will examine whether self-reported ratings of emotional valence assessed prior to the start of a task will predict performance. Participants will report valence ratings during a resting baseline period before performing two EF tasks: the Vertical Stroop and the Go/No-Go. Antibiotic resistance is increasing at a rate that surpasses the discovery and development of new antimicrobial compounds, creating a widening resistance-innovation gap that poses a global public health concern. To address this need for new antibiotic-producing organisms, we partnered with Tiny Earth, a global initiative that engages students in antibiotic discovery through soil sample collection, bacterial isolation, and antimicrobial screening. Collegiate swimmers face extreme physiological demands during high-intensity training phases like "Hell Week," a winter training intensive loading microcycle, that makes recovery monitoring critical for maintaining performance. This study investigated the relationship between sleep quality and recovery markers. Specifically, Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Resting Heart Rate (RHR), in nine female collegiate swimmers (ages 19-23) across all collegiate years. Participants included sprinters, mid-distance, and distance swimmers, leading to varied total yardage across training groups. Witnesses play a crucial role in criminal investigations. However, their ability to recall important details is influenced by cognitive processes such as memory. To improve eyewitness testimony, psychologists developed science-based interviewing techniques, such as the Cognitive Interview, which are used by police to elicit accurate accounts. We also created new retrieval strategies, namely the Category Clustering Recall (CCR), which has been implemented by agencies such as the Los Angeles Police Department. There is an ongoing debate in the literature on the existence of a bilingual advantage on tests of attention. Hypothetically, bilinguals have an advantage over monolinguals on tests of attention because both attention and language control share the same inhibitory mechanism. Because bilinguals engage this mechanism more often than monolinguals, inhibitory control is believed to be stronger and confer an advantage. However, research findings on the bilingual advantage are inconsistent and attempts to reproduce prior results have sometimes failed. First-generation college students (FGCS) comprise a significant and diverse segment of the U.S. undergraduate population, yet they remain disproportionately vulnerable to barriers that impede both academic achievement and career advancement. These challenges, rooted in intersecting factors (e.g., race & gender), are amplified by institutional structures that inadequately address the realities faced by FGCS. Despite the proliferation of career development programs, internship participation, and subsequent employment, among FGCS remains notably low, revealing persistent gaps in support, access, and program efficacy.

Before Title IX passed in 1972, most female college sports teams were coached by women. Today, only 42% of head coaches are women, even though participation in women’s collegiate sports has increased by 637% since 1971. This study explored the factors influencing the professional quality of life of female college coaches. Variables considered in this study included parenting and work, organizational culture, women’s role in the workforce, unique issues faced by female collegiate coaches, and professional quality of life. Accurate characterization of void-fraction distributions in pebble-bed reactors (PBRs) is essential for predicting flow, heat transfer, and neutronic behavior. High-fidelity experimental benchmark data for validating such predictions remain scarce, largely due to the challenges of non-invasive measurements. In this study, gamma-ray computed tomography (CT) was employed to measure radial and cross-sectional porosity in a laboratory-scale pebble bed containing 6cm graphite pebbles. A Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulation was implemented and validated against these measurements, then applied to the full-scale geometry of the Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled pebble-bed reactor. Background/Introduction: Heparin intolerance, most notably heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), presents a major clinical challenge during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), where systemic anticoagulation is essential for safe circulation through the extracorporeal circuit. While several alternative anticoagulants have been described, there is limited consensus regarding their safety, dosing, and outcomes. The objective of this study was to map existing evidence describing alternative anticoagulation strategies for heparin-intolerant adult patients undergoing CPB and to summarize reported patient outcomes, dosing strategies, and intraoperative management considerations.

This paper examines four short stories included in the collection titled Suite Bergamasque, written by multi-awarded Negrense playwright and fictionist Bobby Flores-Villasis. A materialist reading situates Villasis within the canon of Philippine literature in English and analyzes the way his stories formally render the class antagonisms of history through the interconnected narratives of Dumaguete City’s sugar elite. Finally, this paper also contends that the political imagination of Villasis’ work exhorts contemporary Dumaguete writers to critically examine inherited hagiographies in order to describe fully the conditions that have shaped the city into its contemporary formation, particularly the phenomena of gentrification …
