BACKGROUND: Cisgender (cis) Black women in the USA are more likely to become HIV positive during their lifetime than other women. We developed and implemented a behavioral intervention, Increasing PrEP (iPrEP), the first pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed at motivating cis Black women to be willing to use PrEP for HIV prevention and attend an initial PrEP clinic visit following an emergency department visit.

METHODS: Eligible participants were Black cisgender women ages 18-55 years who acknowledged recent condomless sex and substance use. Participants were randomized to iPrEP or usual care (UC). iPrEP is a survey-based intervention designed to raise …

Objective:

To develop a respiratory motion-resolved 4D MRI technique with high-isotropic-resolution (1.1 mm) using 3D radial sampling, camera-based respiratory motion sensing, and temporal compressed sensing reconstruction for lung cancer imaging.

Approach:

Free-breathing half- and full-spoke 3D golden-angle radial acquisitions were performed on eight healthy volunteers and eight patients with lung tumors of varying size. A back-and-forth k-space ordering between consecutive interleaves of the 3D radial acquisition was performed to minimize eddy current-related artifacts. Data were sorted into respiratory motion states using camera-based motion navigation and 4D images were reconstructed using temporal compressed sensing to reduce scan time. miR-205 is consistently downregulated in liver fibrosis, liver cirrhosis, and liver cancer, which indicates it may be a potential therapeutic restoration molecule to tackle liver diseases.

The spectrum of liver diseases presents a major public health concern that is widespread across the globe, accounting for 2 million deaths per year [1]. This dissertation explores the mechanisms driving sediment transport and deposition on the continental shelf and within the bays of the northern Gulf of Mexico via a suite of geophysical methods and sediment cores on a variety of timescales. This dissertation is comprised of three main chapters, each focusing on a different location, environment, and process but tied together using geophysical survey, a thematic focus on geomorphic change and sediment transport within the deltaic cycle and deltaic plain environments, and the implications this change poses for both past and future sediment transport and environmental change in response to sea level change. …

We evaluated the effect of lesion number and volume for brain metastasis treated with SRS using GammaKnife® ICON™ (GK) and CyberKnife® M6™ (CK). Four sets of lesion sizes (<5 mm, 5-10 mm, >10-15 mm, and >15 mm) were contoured and prescribed a dose of 20 Gy/1 fraction. The number of lesions was increased until a threshold mean brain dose of 8 Gy was reached; then individually optimized to achieve maximum conformity. Across GK plans, mean brain dose was linearly proportional to the number of lesions and total GTV for all sizes. The numbers of lesions needed to reach this threshold for GK were …

We make two central claims in this essay. First, the themes of malinformation have remained remarkably consistent across pandemics. What has changed is only the manner of their spread through evolving technologies and globalization. Thus, as with pandemic preparedness more generally, our failure to take proactive measures reflects a failure to heed the lessons of the past. Second, we argue that the COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique opportunity to tackle online falsehoods and mitigate their impact in the future.

Netsweeper, a Canadian company, has produced and sold Internet-filtering technology to authoritarian regimes abroad. According to public research from the Citizen Lab, this technology has been used to censor religious content in Bahrain, information on Rohingya refugees in Myanmar and India, political campaign content in United Arab Emirates, and information on HIV/AIDS in Kuwait. This article considers how Canadian export control law deals with technologies that negatively impact human rights abroad and identifies a gap in the existing export control scheme. In this paper, we examine the potentially deleterious effects of surveillance on vulnerable Canadians. A wide range of digital surveillance technologies have either been deployed or considered for deployment both in Canada and around the world in response to the international emergency created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of these technologies are highly effective in predicting or identifying individual cases and/or outbreaks; others assist in tracing contacts or enforcing compliance with quarantine and isolation measures. De novo non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) after pancreatectomy is a recognized phenomenon; however, its pathophysiology is poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the incidence and identify peri-operative risk factors for the development of de novo NAFLD within various pancreatectomy groups. This single-center retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent pancreatectomy between 2000 and 2020. The incidence rate of de novo NAFLD and time to diagnosis were recorded across patients with malignant versus benign indications for pancreatectomy. The overall incidence of de novo NAFLD after pancreatectomy was 17.5% (24/136). Twenty-one percent (20/94) of patients with malignant indications for surgery …

The Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) is an endangered subspecies of the West Indian manatee inhabiting countries of South America, Meso America and the Caribbean. Basic and applied research is necessary to inform management plans for the effective recovery of this subspecies. The purpose of this study was to systematically review literature regarding Antillean manatees, without restriction of the research topic. Article selection and screening process are described. Our final database consisted of 456 publications, of which peer-reviewed literature (articles, reviews, and notes in research journals) represent the most important type (63.4%), followed by BSc, MSc, and PhD theses (28.1%). …

Manatees are aquatic mammals that live in a variety of environments. Many of those shallow water environments have murky water, making detection using traditional visual surveys very challenging. Side-scan sonar was first proposed as a tool to detect and study manatees in these complicated habitats in 2005. Here, we summarize the use of this tool from 2005 to 2022 by searching the available literature. Our literature search revealed that this tool is being widely used in more than 20 locations and over 15 countries. All three manatee species are being studied with side-scan sonar. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is essential for the development and function of the central nervous system (CNS). However, the brain and its interstitium have largely been thought of as a single entity through which CSF circulates, and it is not known whether specific cell populations within the CNS preferentially interact with the CSF. Here, we develop a technique for CSF tracking, gold nanoparticle-enhanced X-ray microtomography, to achieve micrometer-scale resolution visualization of CSF circulation patterns during development. The design of compounds that can discriminate between closely related target proteins remains a central challenge in drug discovery. Specific therapeutics targeting the highly conserved myosin motor family are urgently needed as mutations in at least six of its members cause numerous diseases. Allosteric modulators, like the myosin-II inhibitor blebbistatin, are a promising means to achieve specificity. However, it remains unclear why blebbistatin inhibits myosin-II motors with different potencies given that it binds at a highly conserved pocket that is always closed in blebbistatin-free experimental structures. International Journal of Exercise Science 16(6): 148-158, 2023. There is recent interest from coaches and athletes regarding IPC as an effective way to generate better competitive outcomes. Regarding cycling specifically, the impact of IPC remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of IPC treatment for improving athletic performance during short-duration cycling. After the exclusion and inclusion criteria, there were 11 volunteers for the 3-minute cycling TT and 13 volunteers for the 6-minute cycling TT. Previous varsity sport injury research has analyzed how acute and chronic injury severity, type, and location differs between sport and sexes, with limited research in time to injury. Canadian university varsity sport injury research is especially sparse and mostly retrospective. Thus, we aimed to understand injury differences in male and female competitive university athletes competing in the same sport. Athletes who competed on the basketball, volleyball, soccer, ice hockey, football (male), rugby (female), and wrestling teams were eligible for the study. International Journal of Exercise Science 16(2): 118-128, 2023. The purpose of this study was to investigate lower limb blood flow responses under varying blood flow restriction (BFR) pressures based on individualized limb occlusion pressures (LOP) using a commonly used occlusion device. Twenty-nine participants (65.5% female, 23.8 ± 4.7 years) volunteered for this study. An 11.5cm tourniquet was placed around participants’ right proximal thigh, followed by an automated LOP measurement (207.1 ± 29.4mmHg). International Journal of Exercise Science 16(2): 109-117, 2023. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid purported to reduce symptoms of discomfort. Individuals are now using CBD to treat symptoms of multiple sclerosis, seizures, and chronic pain. Animal models indicate that CBD may be effective at reducing inflammation post fatiguing exercise.
