Autophagy Requirements For Eye Lens Differentiation And Transparency, Lisa Brennan, M Joseph Costello, J Fielding Hejtmancik, A. Menko, S Amer Riazuddin, Alan Shiels, Marc Kantorow

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Recent evidence points to autophagy as an essential cellular requirement for achieving the mature structure, homeostasis, and transparency of the lens. Collective evidence from multiple laboratories using chick, mouse, primate, and human model systems provides evidence that classic autophagy structures, ranging from double-membrane autophagosomes to single-membrane autolysosomes, are found throughout the lens in both undifferentiated lens epithelial cells and maturing lens fiber cells. Recently, key autophagy signaling pathways have been identified to initiate critical steps in the lens differentiation program, including the elimination of organelles to form the core lens organelle-free zone. Other recent studies using ex vivo lens culture …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Island ecosystems provide natural laboratories to assess the impacts of isolation on population persistence. However, most studies of persistence have focused on a single species, without comparisons to other organisms they interact with in the ecosystem. The case study of moose and gray wolves on Isle Royale allows for a direct contrast of genetic variation in isolated populations that have experienced dramatically differing population trajectories over the past decade. Whereas the Isle Royale wolf population recently declined nearly to extinction due to severe inbreeding depression, the moose population has thrived and continues to persist, despite having low genetic diversity and …

Selectively Modified Lactose And N-Acetyllactosamine Analogs At Three Key Positions To Afford Effective Galectin-3 Ligands †, Shuay Abdullayev, Priyanka Dipak Kadav, Purnima Bandyopadhyay, Francisco Javier Medrano, Gabriel A. Rabinovich, Tarun K. Dam, Antonio Romero, René Roy

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Galectins constitute a family of galactose-binding lectins overly expressed in the tumor microenvironment as well as in innate and adaptive immune cells, in inflammatory diseases. Lactose ((β-D-galactopyranosyl)-(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranose, Lac) and N-Acetyllactosamine (2-acetamido-2-deoxy-4-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-D-glucopyranose, LacNAc) have been widely exploited as ligands for a wide range of galectins, sometimes with modest selectivity. Even though several chemical modifications at single positions of the sugar rings have been applied to these ligands, very few examples combined the simultaneous modifications at key positions known to increase both affinity and selectivity. We report herein combined modifications at the anomeric position, C-2, and O-3′ of each of the two …

Utilization Of Mechanically Recycled Carbon Fibers In Vinyl Ester Composites, Khaled Alharmoodi, Amir Hussain Idrisi, Abdel Hamid Ismail Mourad, Basim Abu-Jdayil

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

As we enter the twenty-first century, the aviation sector is expected to thrive as flying becomes the primary mode of transportation between states or nations. With such a demand, there is a corresponding need to manufacture aircraft components. The study focused on recycling carbon fiber composites received from the STRATA company, which were cut-off/waste material generated during the manufacture of airplane components. The cut-offs were then reduced to powder form using a standard face milling machine in three sizes (90, 150, and 250 µm). After, the powder was utilized to fabricate vinyl ester composites with four weight percentages (10%, 20%, …

Bachman, Catrina E. Fernholz, David S. Trine, Rebecca E. Hobmeier, Nathaniel J. Maki, Timothy J. Massoglia, Thomas Werner

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

How complex morphological patterns form is an intriguing question in developmental biology. However, the mechanisms that generate complex patterns remain largely unknown. Here, we sought to identify the genetic mechanisms that regulate the tan (t) gene in a multi-spotted pigmentation pattern on the abdomen and wings of Drosophila guttifera. Previously, we showed that yellow (y) gene expression completely prefigures the abdominal and wing pigment patterns of this species. In the current study, we demonstrate that the t gene is co-expressed with the y gene in nearly identical patterns, both transcripts foreshadowing the adult abdominal and wing melanin spot patterns. We …

Noise2clean: Cross-Device Side-Channel Traces Denoising With Unsupervised Deep Learning, Honggang Yu, Mei Wang, Xiyu Song, Haoqi Shan, Hongbing Qiu, Junyi Wang, Kaichen Yang

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Deep learning (DL)-based side-channel analysis (SCA) has posed a severe challenge to the security and privacy of embedded devices. During its execution, an attacker exploits physical SCA leakages collected from profiling devices to create a DL model for recovering secret information from victim devices. Despite this success, recent works have demonstrated that certain countermeasures, such as random delay interrupts or clock jitters, would make these attacks more complex and less practical in real-world scenarios. To address this challenge, we present a novel denoising scheme that exploits the U-Net model to pre-process SCA traces for “noises” (i.e., countermeasures) removal. Specifically, we …

Dsrc Versus Lte-V2x: Empirical Performance Analysis Of Direct Vehicular Communication Technologies, Ehsan Moradi-Pari, Danyang Tian, Mojtaba Bahramgiri, Samer Rajab, Sue Bai

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication systems have an eminence potential to improve road safety and optimize traffic flow by broadcasting Basic Safety Messages (BSMs). Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) and LTE Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) are two candidate technologies to enable V2V communication. DSRC relies on the IEEE 802.11p standard for its PHY and MAC layer while LTE-V2X is based on 3GPP’s Release 14 and operates in a distributed manner in the absence of cellular infrastructure. There has been considerable debate over the relative advantages and disadvantages of DSRC and LTE-V2X, aiming to answer the fundamental question of which technology is most effective in real-world …

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been used for the first time to investigate the microstructure of additively manufactured molybdenum. Despite the wide applicability of positron annihilation spectroscopy techniques to the defect analysis of metals, they have only been used sparingly to monitor the microstructural evolution of additively manufactured metals. Molybdenum and molybdenum with a dilute addition (0.1 wt%) of nano-sized silicon carbide, prepared via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) at four different scan speeds: 100, 200, 400, and 800 mm/s, were studied by PALS and compared with electron backscatter diffraction analysis. The aim of this study was to clarify …

The Effects Of Robot Voices And Appearances On Users' Emotion Recognition And Subjective Perception, Sangjin Ko, Jaclyn A. Barnes, Jiayuan Dong, Chung Hyuk Park, Ayanna Howard, Myounghoon Jeon

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

As the influence of social robots in people's daily lives grows, research on understanding people's perception of robots including sociability, trust, acceptance, and preference becomes more pervasive. Research has considered visual, vocal, or tactile cues to express robots' emotions, whereas little research has provided a holistic view in examining the interactions among different factors influencing emotion perception. We investigated multiple facets of user perception on robots during a conversational task by varying the robots' voice types, appearances, and emotions. In our experiment, 20 participants interacted with two robots having four different voice types. While participants were reading fairy tales to …

Steering Particles Via Micro-Actuation Of Chemical Gradients Using Model Predictive Control, Mark N. Mcdonald, Cameron K. Peterson, Douglas R. Tree Feb 2023

Steering Particles Via Micro-Actuation Of Chemical Gradients Using Model Predictive Control, Mark N. Mcdonald, Cameron K. Peterson, Douglas R. Tree

Faculty Publications

Biological systems rely on chemical gradients to direct motion through both chemotaxis and signaling, but synthetic approaches for doing the same are still relatively naïve. Consequently, we present a novel method for using chemical gradients to manipulate the position and velocity of colloidal particles in a microfluidic device. Specifically, we show that a set of spatially localized chemical reactions that are sufficiently controllable can be used to steer colloidal particles via diffusiophoresis along an arbitrary trajectory. To accomplish this, we develop a control method for steering colloidal particles with chemical gradients using nonlinear model predictive control with a model based …

An Overview Of The Republican Party After The 2022 Midterm Elections, Michael Espinoza Feb 2023

An Overview Of The Republican Party After The 2022 Midterm Elections, Michael Espinoza

Political Science Faculty Publications

Key Takeaways

  • The supposed red wave ended up being a red trickle – a missed opportunity but not a complete failure.
  • The opportunity for a sizeable swing to the right went unfulfilled – but the Republican Party still won a narrow House majority.
  • Trump backed Senate candidates cost the Republican Party a Senate majority.
  • The Republican Party still grapples with the Trump dilemma; however, moving on from Trump would not be easy, nor would it signal change within the Republican Party, ‘Make America Great Again’ cultural conservatism took hold of the party before Trump – it merely went by another …

Diabetes classification has traditionally considered type 1 and type 2 diabetes as 2 separate entities with different pathogenic mechanisms. However, clinicians and researchers see increasingly more exceptions to this conventional paradigm, leading to a concept of mixed phenotypes in diabetes classification. Herein we report the case of an adolescent with unclear diabetes type due to the presence of obesity, robust endogenous insulin production, multiple islet autoantibody positivity and severe hyperglycemia at diabetes diagnosis that has been successfully treated with liraglutide therapy alone. Our case report highlights the difficulty of diabetes classification and subsequent need for personalized medicine with regard to …
