Novice Nurse Educator Perceptions And Integration Of Academic Nurse Educators' Core Competencies: A Qualitative Case Study, Shelley Wolfe

Education Doctorate Dissertations

The shortage of qualified nursing faculty contributes to the nation’s shortage of registered nurses. Addressing the nursing faculty shortage includes strategies aimed at supporting the development of nurse educators. The National League for Nursing Core Competencies of Academic Nurse Educators (NLNCC) describe the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for nurse educators within the academic setting. The purpose of this qualitative case study was gaining a deep understanding of how novice nurse educators teaching in a prelicensure baccalaureate nursing program in the Midwest perceived and integrated their skills and application experiences of the NLNCC. A conceptual framework consisting of the Nurse …

Students and faculty can jointly play a role in how Open Educational Resources are created and deployed by assigning students to expand Wikipedia pages. By producing re-usable OER materials, these assignments provide students with transferable research skills and collaborative learning opportunities, face-to-face or remotely. By taking part in the production of open-access materials, students practice sharing knowledge with a larger community and receive feedback from interested readers beyond their instructor and classmates. In addition, introducing more students to Wikipedia editing tools can increase the diversity of editors and topics in gender, language, ethnicity, and region. At the same time, learning …

Artificial Intelligence-Based Multi-Class Histopathologic Classification Of Kidney Neoplasms, Dibson D. Gondim, Khaleel I. Al-Obaidy, Muhammad T. Idrees, John N. Eble, Liang Cheng

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Articles

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques are increasingly being explored as an emerging ancillary technique for improving accuracy and reproducibility of histopathological diagnosis. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a malignancy responsible for 2% of cancer deaths worldwide. Given that RCC is a heterogenous disease, accurate histopathological classification is essential to separate aggressive subtypes from indolent ones and benign mimickers. There are early promising results using AI for RCC classification to distinguish between 2 and 3 subtypes of RCC. However, it is not clear how an AI-based model designed for multiple subtypes of RCCs, and benign mimickers would perform which is a scenario …

Aseptic Orbital Cellulitis As A Complication Of Suprachoroidal Hemorrhage, Maja Magazin, Venkatkrish M. Kasetty, Dilip A. Thomas

Ophthalmology Articles

Suprachoroidal hemorrhage is a rare and potentially devastating clinical entity seen in individuals on anticoagulation presenting with severe unilateral eye pain, sudden vision loss, and elevated intraocular pressures. Herein, we report the first case of aseptic orbital cellulitis caused by recurrent spontaneous suprachoroidal hemorrhage. This case highlights an example of non-infectious orbital cellulitis arising from choroidal pathology in the setting of uncontrolled intraocular pressures and recurrent intraocular bleeding. Surgical intervention with blood drainage should be considered to prevent complications and preserve the globe.

PURPOSE: Glioblastoma(GBM) is a lethal disease characterized by inevitable recurrence. Here we investigate the molecular pathways mediating resistance, with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic opportunities.

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We developed a longitudinal in vivo recurrence model utilizing patient-derived explants to produce paired specimens(pre- and post-recurrence) following temozolomide(TMZ) and radiation(IR). These specimens were evaluated for treatment response and to identify gene expression pathways driving treatment resistance. Findings were clinically validated using spatial transcriptomics of human GBMs.

RESULTS: These studies reveal in replicate cohorts, a gene expression profile characterized by upregulation of mesenchymal and stem-like genes at recurrence. Analyses of clinical databases …

A Content Validation Of Work Passion: Was The Passion Ever There?, Rachel Williamson Smith, Hanyi Min, Matthew A. Ng, Nicholas J. Haynes, Malissa A. Clark

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Work passion research most frequently utilizes the dualistic model of passion, which asserts two types of passion that differ based on the internalization of passion into one's identity: harmonious (adaptive) and obsessive (maladaptive) passion. While interest in work passion is exponentially increasing, scholars have recently pointed out concerns regarding the content validity of the most commonly used measure of the dualistic model of work passion, The Passion Scale. To address these questions, we conduct a content validation of The Passion Scale employing recent best practices in content validation research. Specifically, we examine the degree of content validity of the focal …

Where Are Graduates Of Select Cuyahoga County’S Higher Ed Schools Going After Graduation?, Richey Piiparinen

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The U.S. Census has recently partnered with the U.S. Department of Commerce in the creation of the Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes Explorer (PSEO). The PSEO enables localities, such as Cuyahoga County, to track where college graduates of local institutions land after graduation. Why does this matter? In today’s economy, college graduates act as a supply-side factor in the retention and attraction of firms. College graduates, through R&D and entrepreneurship, also act as a demand-side factor in the creation of start-up firms that, in turn, fuel job growth. In Cuyahoga County, the PSEO tracks retention for two public colleges and institutions: Cleveland …

Campello, Jordina Torrents-Barrena, Yahya Ali Ahmed, Mustafa Elattar, Benard Ohene-Botwe, Pempho Nyangulu, William Stones, Sikolia Wanyonyi, Marleen Temmerman

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Most artificial intelligence (AI) research and innovations have concentrated in high-income countries, where imaging data, IT infrastructures and clinical expertise are plentiful. However, slower progress has been made in limited-resource environments where medical imaging is needed. For example, in Sub-Saharan Africa, the rate of perinatal mortality is very high due to limited access to antenatal screening. In these countries, AI models could be implemented to help clinicians acquire fetal ultrasound planes for the diagnosis of fetal abnormalities. So far, deep learning models have been proposed to identify standard fetal planes, but there is no evidence of their ability to generalise …

No Fixed Limit For Storing Simple Visual Features: Realistic Objects Provide An Efficient Scaffold For Holding Features In Mind, Yong Hoon Chung Feb 2023

No Fixed Limit For Storing Simple Visual Features: Realistic Objects Provide An Efficient Scaffold For Holding Features In Mind, Yong Hoon Chung

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Prominent theories of visual working memory postulate that the capacity to maintain a particular visual feature is fixed. In contrast to these theories, recent studies have demonstrated that meaningful objects are better remembered than simple, non-meaningful stimuli. Here, we test whether this is solely because meaningful stimuli can recruit additional features — and thus more storage capacity — or whether simple visual features that are not themselves meaningful can also benefit from being part of a meaningful object. Across five experiments (each N=30) we demonstrate that visual working memory capacity for color is increased when colors are part of recognizable …

The Role Of Salinity In Recovery Of White Sturgeon (Acipenser Transmontanus) From Stimulated Angling Stress, Ryan B. Shartau, Jacelyn Shu, Daniel W. Baker Feb 2023

The Role Of Salinity In Recovery Of White Sturgeon (Acipenser Transmontanus) From Stimulated Angling Stress, Ryan B. Shartau, Jacelyn Shu, Daniel W. Baker

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

White sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) in the Lower Fraser River are the focus of a catch-and-release angling fishery in British Columbia, Canada. However, the lower region of the catch area includes areas where tidal waters invade, and the consequence of salinity levels on recovery from an angling challenge are not characterized in sturgeon, despite theoretical implications of its import. We acclimated white sturgeon to various salinities (0, 10 and 20 (parts per thousand)) to investigate the effects of acclimation on recovery from stimulated angling stress that was induced through manual chasing. This challenge elicited the traditional physiological responses such as ion …

Faculty Publications

Solid-state Friction Stir Additive Manufacturing has recently gained attention as a result of its capacity to fabricate large-scale parts while preserving the mechanical properties of the feedstock material. However, the correlation between the quality of layer-by-layer bonding of the deposited metal and processing parameters has remained unknown. Neutron imaging techniques, with 90% total transmission per cm, are employed for Al6061 parts fabricated by MELD® Technology as a non-destructive evaluation approach for the first time to investigate the layer-by-layer structure of a stadium-shaped ingot in different sections. The post-processed results show the fabricated parts with an optimized set of processing parameters …

Hardness Distribution Of Al2050 Parts Fabricated Using Additive Friction Stir Deposition, Hamed Ghadimi, Huan Ding, Selami Emanet, Mojtaba Talachian, Chase Cox, Michael Eller, Shengmin Guo

Faculty Publications

The solid-state additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) process is a layer-by-layer metal 3D-printing technology. In this study, AFSD is used to fabricate Al–Cu–Li 2050 alloy parts. The hardness values for various regions of the as-deposited built parts are measured, and the results are contrasted with those of the feedstock material. The as-fabricated Al2050 parts are found to have a unique hardness distribution due to the location-specific variations in the processing temperature profile. The XRD results indicate the presence of the secondary phases in the deposited parts, and EDS mapping confirms the formation of detectable alloying particles in the as-deposited Al2050 …

Wind Loads On Overhead Sign Structures: A Comparative Study, Aly Mousaad Aly, James Benson Feb 2023

Wind Loads On Overhead Sign Structures: A Comparative Study, Aly Mousaad Aly, James Benson

Faculty Publications

Road signs are prone to extreme winds that cause significant damage. Overhead sign structures can disrupt traffic and cause harm to the traveling public if a failure occurs under extreme wind conditions. In this paper, we employ Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in a comparative study to understand the aerodynamics of standard, porous, and curved signs. The study shows the viability of porous and curved overhead boards for lessening aerodynamic loads, which can mini-mize damage and enhance safety on roadways. Porous overhead signs can decrease the drag forces; however, the size of the openings is a vital parameter in reducing wind …

Vibration Attenuation In A High-Rise Hybrid-Timber Building: A Comparative Study, Suvash Chapain, Aly Mousaad Aly

Faculty Publications

Recent developments in engineered timber products, and their availability, durability, and renewability, have led to taller and more flexible buildings. However, these buildings may experience excessive vibrations, resulting in safety and serviceability issues due to wind or earthquake loads. This paper presents a dynamic analysis of a 42-story-tall hybrid-timber building, along with a comparative study of the performance of three damping devices: (i) pendulum pounding tuned mass damper (PTMD), (ii) tuned mass damper inerter (TMDI), and (iii) tuned mass damper (TMD). First, we evaluate the vibration reduction capability of the TMD and the TMDI under filtered white noise and variable …
