Background: People with spinal cord injury (SCI) report feeling unprepared to manage their disability upon discharge to the community. This situation is exacerbated when they return to settings where self-management support and resources are sparse, thus increasing the risk of costly secondary conditions and rehospitalizations. These factors make a compelling case for implementing innovative community-based SCI self-management programs that empower and engage individuals with SCI. Using a community-engaged research (CEnR) approach, we developed a peer-supported SCI self-management intervention, known as PHOENIX (Peer-supported Health Outreach, Education, and Information Exchange), which integrates online educational content and support from peer navigators (PNs) through …

Residual neuromuscular blockade (RNMB) presents a significant patient safety issue for anesthesia providers. Adverse events associated with RNMB include respiratory failure, aspiration, re-intubation, longer PACU stays, and even death. Subjective or clinical tests of NMB, including TOF, do not adequately assess neuromuscular recovery. Quantitative or objective neuromuscular monitoring is the only way to definitively assess adequate neuromuscular recovery and has been shown to decrease the incidence of RNMB and postoperative complications. Quantitative monitors may use electromyography, acceleromyography, mechanomyography, or kinemyography to monitor neuromuscular function. Steroidal neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs), such as rocuronium and vecuronium, are commonly used intraoperatively to facilitate endotracheal intubation, optimize surgical conditions, and facilitate controlled ventilation. Historically, NMBA antagonism involved the use of neostigmine, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, with glycopyrrolate, an anticholinergic agent. Sugammadex is a modified cyclodextrin that selectively encapsulates steroidal NMBAs, forming an inactive water-soluble complex that is renally excreted. Due to its renal clearance, providers are cautious regarding its use in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) because of the potential for postoperative neuromuscular blockade reoccurrence.

Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy is a promising treatment option for patients suffering from B-cell- and plasma cell-derived hematologic malignancies and is being adapted for the treatment of solid cancers. However, CAR T is associated with frequently severe toxicities such as cytokine release syndrome (CRS), immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS), macrophage activation syndrome (MAS), and prolonged cytopenias—a reduction in the number of mature blood cells of one or more lineage. Electrical stimulation of peripheral muscles below motor neuron threshold (sensory stimulation) has shown potential as an effective, low-cost, and minimally invasive treatment for Essential Tremor (ET), one of the most common movement disorders. Past studies have shown that asynchronous sensory stimulation of antagonist muscles out of phase with tremor can suppress ET. Synchronous sensory stimulation, which stimulates antagonists simultaneously and is easier to implement, has yielded mixed results. Glacial Lake Outburst Floods Threaten Millions Globally, Caroline Taylor, Tom R. Robinson, Stuart Dunning, Carr J Rachel, Matthew Westoby

AbstractGlacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) represent a major hazard and can result in significant loss of life. Globally, since 1990, the number and size of glacial lakes has grown rapidly along with downstream population, while socio-economic vulnerability has decreased. Nevertheless, contemporary exposure and vulnerability to GLOFs at the global scale has never been quantified. Here we show that 15 million people globally are exposed to impacts from potential GLOFs. Populations in High Mountains Asia (HMA) are the most exposed and on average live closest to glacial lakes with ~1 million people living within 10 km of a glacial lake. More …

The session shared how the UCF Libraries and Center for Distributed Learning (CDL) can help faculty connect to free (open or library-sourced) resources and tools to find, adapt, or author course materials and reduce student out-of-pocket cost to zero ($0). Session activities included constructing queries to find quality, relevant free/open materials and using AI technology to automate the course assessment creation process.

This paper examines emerging technologies for indigenous knowledge management by public libraries of Akwa Ibom State. It conceptualise indigenous knowledge, indigenous knowledge management and emerging technologies. The different Indigenous knowledge of Akwa Ibom State were explored. The emerging technologies for management of indigenous knowledge were evaluated. The paper concluded that indigenous knowledge is the identity and prestige of the local people as their cultural heritage over centuries are embedded in it. This study investigated the levels of job satisfaction among para-professionals in academic libraries in Bauchi State. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of the study consist all the 250 paraprofessionals in the six academic libraries in Bauchi State. The entire population was used without sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled “Levels of Job Satisfaction among Para-Professionals in Academic Libraries Questionnaire” (LOJSPALQ). This instrument was validated by three experts. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha which yielded an overall co-efficient value of 0.78. Teachers may become demoralized when they feel they are unable to access the moral rewards of teaching. Some moral rewards of teaching include building relationships with students, adjusting methods of instruction that impacts individual student growth, and completing a creative and engaging lesson plan. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to explore the experiences of public middle school teachers with demoralization in the context of their teaching environments. Six participants who self-identified as demoralized completed semi-structured interviews over Zoom. These interviews were then restoried into narratives, then manually coded into themes. The Relationship Between Staff Nurses' Perceptions Of Nurse Manager Caring Behaviors And Their Perception Of Exposure To Workplace Bullying Within Multiple Healthcare Settings, Lynda D. Olender

This study examined the relationship between staff nurses' perception of nurse manager caring behaviors and their perceived exposure to workplace bullying within multiple healthcare settings. It was based on the theoretical position that caring promotes reciprocal caring and healing for each other and for the larger universe as informed by Watson's theory of human caring (1979, 2006, 2008). Results indicated a statistically significant, negative, linear relationship between the CFS-CM and the NAQ-R (r = -.534, p < .001), meaning that as staff nurses' perceptions of their nurse manager caring increased, their perception of exposure to negative acts (meeting the definition of workplace bullying) significantly decreased. The sample consisted of primarily older, more experienced, staff nurses who worked 10 years or longer within their work environment. Data analysis also revealed that staff nurses who were females and those who worked in Medical/Surgical settings were significantly more likely to perceive their managers as caring (p < .05 respectively) and that a high workload significantly influenced the staff nurses perception of exposure to workplace bullying (p < .05). In view of the predicted nursing shortages as baby-boomer nurses retire at the same time the demand for health care is rising (AACN, 2009), these findings highlight the importance of caring leadership for the health and availability of nurses at the bedside, and may lead to shifting work priorities for nurse managers. Study findings may also foster the design and implementation of a caring curriculum and caring competencies applicable for the nurse managers' role either within nursing academic or clinical settings.

South Asian Low Sodium Study (Salt): A Multi-Method Approach, Salima Hemani

Hypertension (HTN) is prevalent in South Asian Canadians (SAC), and dietary sodium is the primary contributing factor. The overall goal of the South Asian Low-sodium sTudy (SALT) is to describe contextual factors and determine the feasibility of implementing a six-week low sodium community-based dietary intervention to improve outcomes in SAC with stage one HTN.

SALT is a multi-method study consisting of a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) and a cross-sectional survey. Following ethics approval, participants with stage one HTN were randomized to a usual care group or an intervention group. Participants in the usual care group received the HTN Canada …
