Effects Of Adjuvants In A Rabies-Vectored Ebola Virus Vaccine On Protection From Surrogate Challenge, Catherine Yankowski, Drishya Kurup, Christoph Wirblich, Matthias J. Schnell
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
Ebola virus is the primary contributor to the global threat of filovirus severe hemorrhagic fever, and Ebola virus disease has a case fatality rate of 50-90%. An inactivated, bivalent filovirus/rabies virus vaccine, FILORAB1, consists of recombinant rabies virus virions expressing the Ebola virus glycoprotein. FILORAB1 is immunogenic and protective from Ebola virus challenge in mice and non-human primates, and protection is enhanced when formulated with toll-like receptor 4 agonist Glucopyranosyl lipid adjuvant (GLA) in a squalene oil-in-water emulsion (SE). Through an adjuvant comparison in mice, we demonstrate that GLA-SE improves FILORAB1 efficacy by activating the innate immune system and shaping …

Formulation Of Encapsulated Nanoparticles Of Leek Extract As Antimicrobial And Anticancer Agent, Rawan Hassan Mohamed Elghanam
Theses and Dissertations
Leek extract (LEK) has broad therapeutic activity. However, plant extract use has many drawbacks, which could be resolved using nanocarriers. The purpose of this research work was to prepare chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs) encapsulating LEK and investigate their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer activity. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy was used to determine the LEK components. The CS-LEK NPs were produced by tripolyphosphate (TPP) crosslinking with chitosan (CS) the ionic gelation methodology. The particle size was 331 nm, zeta potential (ZP) was 28.9 mv, polydispersity index (PDI) was 0.4, encapsulation efficiency (EE) was 65.6%, and loading capacity (LC) was 28.8 % of the …
Covid Vaccines And Intellectual Property Rights: Evaluating The Potential For National Legislation Implementing Global Patent Waivers, Ashley Dabiere
Covid Vaccines And Intellectual Property Rights: Evaluating The Potential For National Legislation Implementing Global Patent Waivers, Ashley Dabiere
Duke Law & Technology Review
Debates over the proper scope of intellectual property protections during the COVID-19 pandemic have occupied newspaper headlines since the first vaccines were developed nearly three years ago. Scholars and key politicians from several nations considered the implementation of a global patent waiver in an effort to make the vaccines more widely available in developing parts of the world. Although the question of whether such a waiver would fulfill this goal remains empirically unanswered and up for debate, the legal structure of United States patent law would make its implementation by Congress difficult given the value placed on intellectual property protections …

Trusting Ai: Integrating Artificial Intelligence Into The Army’S Professional Expert Knowledge, C. Anthony Pfaff, Christopher J. Lowrance, Bre M. Washburn, Brett A. Carey
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Integrating artificially intelligent technologies for military purposes poses a special challenge. In previous arms races, such as the race to atomic bomb technology during World War II, expertise resided within the Department of Defense. But in the artificial intelligence (AI) arms race, expertise dwells mostly within industry and academia. Also, unlike the development of the bomb, effective employment of AI technology cannot be relegated to a few specialists; almost everyone will have to develop some level of AI and data literacy. Complicating matters is AI-driven systems can be a “black box” in that humans may not be able to explain …

Robust Explicit Estimation Of The Log-Logistic Distribution With Applications, Zhuanzhuan Ma, Min Wang, Chanseok Park
Robust Explicit Estimation Of The Log-Logistic Distribution With Applications, Zhuanzhuan Ma, Min Wang, Chanseok Park
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
The parameters of the log-logistic distribution are generally estimated based on classical methods such as maximum likelihood estimation, whereas these methods usually result in severe biased estimates when the data contain outliers. In this paper, we consider several alternative estimators, which not only have closed-form expressions, but also are quite robust to a certain level of data contamination. We investigate the robustness property of each estimator in terms of the breakdown point. The finite sample performance and effectiveness of these estimators are evaluated through Monte Carlo simulations and a real-data application. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed estimators perform favorably …
Preoperative Opioid Education, Hunter Tinnell
Preoperative Opioid Education, Hunter Tinnell
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Opioids are powerful analgesics, typically reserved for severe pain, such as intraoperative and postoperative pain. They are a valuable asset in pain control but have significant risk for addiction and abuse. Most patients are not educated on the risks, benefits, and alternatives to opioids and the majority of patients report never having a discussion regarding opioids with any healthcare provider prior to surgery. Often, patients are initially introduced to opioids for surgical and postoperative pain control. Unfortunately, this can lead to opioid abuse and addiction.

Transition Experiences Of Novice Mid-Level Academic Nurse Leaders From Educators To Administrators, Joana Velasquez
Transition Experiences Of Novice Mid-Level Academic Nurse Leaders From Educators To Administrators, Joana Velasquez
Dissertations
The shortage of academic nurse leaders (ANLs) is imminent and creates a crisis for the nursing profession. Nurse educators commonly assume leadership roles with minimal preparation and training. However, few research studies have explored the transition of nursing faculty to ANLs. Consequently, several aspects of transitioning from educator to administrator have remained unknown. The purpose of this generic qualitative research was to explore the experiences of novice mid-level ANLs who transitioned from educators to academic administrators, identify the facilitators and barriers to the transition process, and describe the indicators of a successful role transition. The primary research question that guided …

Just Kidding? The Problem Of Unenforceable Waivers Of Liability, Anthony J. Sebok
Online Publications
In their forthcoming article, Unenforceable Waivers, Edward Cheng, Ehud Guttel, and Yuval Procaccia (“CGP”) ask an embarrassing question: Why do businesses require customers to sign waivers that have been struck down by courts in published opinions that are available not only to their lawyers but also to their customers? In this Jot, I praise CGP for their sharp eye–this is torts scholarship at its best–and then evaluate their suggestions for reform.

Estimation Of The Response, Power Spectra, And Whirling Patterns Generated From Mud Circulating Along The Annulus During Drilling Procedures: An Alternative Mathematical Representation Via Finite Element Modelling, Eleazar Marquez
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
In this study, an alternative mathematical representation of a drill-string is proposed to provide an alternative assessment on BHA dynamic alterations. Lateral vibrations remain the focal point of drill-string breakdowns given their high frequency characterization and ability to deviate perforation trajectories from the subsurface target. In this paper, the proposed model consists of an anisotropic rotor subjected to distinct RPMs, an axial force, and a bidirectional harmonic excitation with specified amplitude and assorted duration to simulate annulus motion generated from the mud fluid. In this regard, Euler-Bernoulli beam theory was adopted to establish a complete MDOF mathematical expression and thus …
Development Of An Improved Mathematical Representation Which Captures The Nonlinear Dynamic Behavior Of A Drill-String Assembly, Eleazar Marquez
Development Of An Improved Mathematical Representation Which Captures The Nonlinear Dynamic Behavior Of A Drill-String Assembly, Eleazar Marquez
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
In this study, an improved mathematical representation of a drill-string assembly is developed to provide an alternative assessment on vibration irregularities proliferating downhole due to bit-rock interference. Lateral vibrations receive particular attention due to their high frequency content which alter the dynamic response of the drill-string, instigate casing damage, and impede optimal penetration rates. The response of the drill-string is captured by synthesizing compatible stationary bit excitations, via an auto-regressive digital filter, and implementing Monte Carlo simulation, while the power spectral density function is approximated to elucidate the dynamic characteristics during drilling. Formulating adequate physical parameters for the equation of …
A Probabilistic Analysis In Vibration-Assisted Drilling To Measure Dynamic Behavior During Drilling And Understand Risk Factors, Eleazar Marquez, Samuel Garcia
A Probabilistic Analysis In Vibration-Assisted Drilling To Measure Dynamic Behavior During Drilling And Understand Risk Factors, Eleazar Marquez, Samuel Garcia
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper, a mathematical representation is proposed to further understand the dynamic behavior and risk factors associated with vibration-assisted drilling (VAD) technology. The proposed Timoshenko beam model, which characterizes VAD technology, consists of two passive, counter-rotating coaxial rotors operating simultaneously, subjected to a stochastic excitation. In this regard, a finite element technique was incorporated to determine the physical parameters of the governing equation of motion, where the shear and rotary effects, as well as the gyroscopic couples generated perpendicular to the axis of rotation, were accounted for. Further, the relative velocity between the coaxial rotors was accounted in the …
Quadcopter Control Using Single Network Adaptive Critics, Alberto Velazquez, Lei Xu, Tohid Sardarmehni
Quadcopter Control Using Single Network Adaptive Critics, Alberto Velazquez, Lei Xu, Tohid Sardarmehni
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper, optimal tracking control is found for an inputaffine nonlinear quadcopter using Single Network Adaptive Critics (SNAC). The quadcopter dynamics consists of twelve states and four controls. The states are defined using two related reference frames: the earth frame, which describes the position and angles, and the body frame, which describes the linear and angular velocities. The quadcopter has six outputs and four controls, so it is an underactuated nonlinear system. The optimal control for the system is derived by solving a discrete-time recursive Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation using a linear in-parameter neural network. The neural network is trained to …

Non-Destructive Infrared Thermographic Curing Analysis Of Polymer Composites, Md Ashiqur Rahman, Javier Becerril, Dipannita Ghosh, Nazmul Islam, Ali Ashraf
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Infrared (IR) thermography is a non-contact method of measuring temperature that analyzes the infrared radiation emitted by an object. Properties of polymer composites are heavily influenced by the filler material, filler size, and filler dispersion, and thus thermographic analysis can be a useful tool to determine the curing and filler dispersion. In this study, we investigated the curing mechanisms of polymer composites at the microscale by capturing real-time temperature using an IR Thermal Camera. Silicone polymers with fillers of Graphene, Graphite powder, Graphite flake, and Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) were subsequently poured into a customized 3D printed mold for …

I'Ll Make A Man Out Of You: Precarious Manhood Beliefs Among Heterosexual-Cisgender Men And Queer Men, Serena L. Wasilewski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Traditional masculine gender stereotypes often suggest that men should be strong, assertive, and athletic, and these stereotypes promote men’s dominance in society and gender inequality. Endorsement of masculine stereotypes may also contribute to heterosexual men being more prejudiced against queer men. Queer men experience unique difficulties in their quest to abide by social norms defining manhood. Research using the precarious manhood theory suggests that manhood is difficult to obtain and even more challenging to maintain. Given the emerging nature of precarious manhood studies, little is known about young men’s perceptions of the precarious nature of manhood and how this may …

Neutrino Forces In Neutrino Backgrounds, Mitrajyoti Ghosh, Yuval Grossman, Walter Tangarife, Xun-Jie Xu, Bingrong Yu
Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The Standard Model predicts a long-range force, proportional to G2 F /r5, between fermions due to the exchange of a pair of neutrinos. This quantum force is feeble and has not been observed yet. In this paper, we compute this force in the presence of neutrino backgrounds, both for isotropic and directional background neutrinos. We find that for the case of directional background the force can have a 1/r dependence and it can be significantly enhanced compared to the vacuum case. In particular, background effects caused by reactor, solar, and supernova neutrinos enhance the force by many …
Why Working Creatively Is Still Important In English Primary Classrooms In 2022: An Appreciative Empirical Inquiry, R Atkinson
Plymouth Institute of Education
This study focuses on the current situation regarding children working creatively in schools. With two colleagues, I used a form of action research called Appreciative Inquiry, working in collaboration with teachers. Though it took courage for the teachers to plan and implement activities in which children worked creatively, they valued this work for several reasons. It can result in highly memorable and meaningful learning; it offers rich assessment opportunities by allowing children to express their understanding; it guards against underestimating children’s capabilities; and it provides opportunities to fulfil the more holistic purposes of education. Therefore this pedagogical approach still matters.

Identifying Flow Patterns In A Narrow Channel Via Feature Extraction Of Conductivity Measurements With A Support Vector Machine, Kai Yang, Jiajia Liu, Min Wang, Hua Wang, Qingtai Xiao
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
In this work, a visualization experiment for rectangular channels was carried out to explore gas-liquid two-phase flow characteristics. Typical flow patterns, including bubble, elastic and mixed flows, were captured by direct imaging technology and the corresponding measurements with fluctuation characteristics were recorded by using an electrical conductivity sensor. Time-domain and frequency-domain characteristics of the corresponding electrical conductivity measurements of each flow pattern were analyzed with a probability density function and a power spectral density curve. The results showed that the feature vectors can be constructed to reflect the time-frequency characteristics of conductivity measurements successfully by introducing the quantized characteristic parameters, …
