Effect Of Carpobrotus Edulis Invasion History On Plant Communities, Claire Savage, Kelly Savage, Kane R. Keller Feb 2023

Effect Of Carpobrotus Edulis Invasion History On Plant Communities, Claire Savage, Kelly Savage, Kane R. Keller

Western North American Naturalist

Invasive species can cause drastic changes to plant communities. In many cases, removal of invasive species fails to reverse these changes, perhaps due to side effects of removal strategies, changes that co-occurred with invasion, or legacy effects. Carpobrotus edulis is a notorious invasive species in Mediterranean-type climates around the world that alters plant communities and may generate legacy effects. We investigate the impact of C. edulis invasion, removal, and potential legacy effects on coastal plant communities. We assessed community composition, species richness, diversity, and native and exotic species cover at 5 sites differing in C. edulis invasion and removal history. …

Self-Assembly Of Metallo-Supramolecules Based On Terpyridine And Its Derivatives, Yu Yan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

By studying coordination complexes in nature, such as chlorophyll, heme, and Enterobacter, we have learned that the structures of coordination complexes are closely related to their functions. However, it remains a challenge to achieve elaborate structures and sophisticated functions of complexes through synthetic methods. In the supramolecular chemistry field, coordination-driven self-assembly as a bottom-up approach are used to construct diverse supramolecules with well-defined structures and desired functions. The ways to achieve the goal including (1) rearranging components through coordination; (2)linking metal ions and organic frameworks to complete energy transfer; (3) converting between assembly and disassembly due to detection of stimuli. …

“I Can't Say It”! Doodling To Emancipate Adolescents' Voices In A Transformative Mixed Methods Study Of Covert Bullying In Jamaican High Schools, Ingrid Hunt-Anderson, Peggy Shannon-Baker

Curriculum, Foundations & Reading: Faculty Publications

This article demonstrates the value of doodling as an emancipatory method to enhance mixed methods research studies. We draw from the qualitative phase of an exploratory sequential mixed methods study about covert bullying among high school students in Jamaica. This study was based in the transformative-emancipatory paradigm. The authors illustrate how students' doodles contributed to triangulating, expanding findings from the qualitative phase, and providing an emancipatory space for students’ voices. Lessons learned and recommendations are provided that demonstrate the applicability of doodling within mixed methods studies in educational psychology, developmental psychology, counseling, and applied psychology.

Digital banking and eCommerce are ingredients of overall digital strategy. I would like to limit my remarks on the financialsector and how digital banking fits into that. We should not forget the purpose for which the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is promoting digital banking. And that is it is an effective tool for strengthening intermediation and financial inclusion in the country inthe pursuit of larger, equitable and sustainable development of Pakistan.

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Blood pressure (BP) is often inadequately controlled in children treated for hypertension, and personalized (n-of-1) trials show promise for tailoring treatment choices. We assessed whether patients whose treatment choices are informed by an n-of-1 trial have improved BP control compared to usual care.

METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was conducted in a pediatric hypertension clinic in Houston from April 2018 to September 2020. Hypertensive adolescents and young adults 10-22 years old were randomized 1:1 to a strategy of n-of-1 trial using ambulatory BP monitoring to inform treatment choice or usual care, with treatment selected by physician preference. The primary …

The catalytic function of lysyl hydroxylase-2 (LH2), a member of the Fe(II)/αKG-dependent oxygenase superfamily, is to catalyze the hydroxylation of lysine to hydroxylysine in collagen, resulting in stable hydroxylysine aldehyde-derived collagen cross-links (HLCCs). Reports show that high amounts of LH2 lead to the accumulation of HLCCs, causing fibrosis and specific types of cancer metastasis. Some members of the Fe(II)/αKG-dependent family have also been reported to have intramolecular O

Neuropathic pain is a leading cause of high-impact pain, is often disabling and is poorly managed by current therapeutics. Here we focused on a unique group of neuropathic pain patients undergoing thoracic vertebrectomy where the dorsal root ganglia is removed as part of the surgery allowing for molecular characterization and identification of mechanistic drivers of neuropathic pain independently of preclinical models. Our goal was to quantify whole transcriptome RNA abundances using RNA-seq in pain-associated human dorsal root ganglia from these patients, allowing comprehensive identification of molecular changes in these samples by contrasting them with non-pain-associated dorsal root ganglia. We sequenced …

Effective therapeutic strategies are needed for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations that acquire resistance to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) mediated by epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). We investigate cell surface proteins that could be targeted by antibody-based or adoptive cell therapy approaches and identify CD70 as being highly upregulated in EMT-associated resistance. Moreover, CD70 upregulation is an early event in the evolution of resistance and occurs in drug-tolerant persister cells (DTPCs). CD70 promotes cell survival and invasiveness, and stimulation of CD70 triggers signal transduction pathways known to be re-activated with acquired TKI resistance. …

Early Antibiotics And Risk For Necrotizing Enterocolitis In Premature Infants: A Narrative Review., Alain Cuna, Michael J. Morowitz, Venkatesh Sampath

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

While prompt initiation of antibiotics at birth due to concerns for early onset sepsis is common, it often leads to many preterm infants being exposed to treatment despite negative blood cultures. Such exposure to early antibiotics can impact the developing gut microbiome putting infants at increased risk of several diseases. Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a devastating inflammatory bowel disease that affects preterm infants, is among the most widely studied neonatal disease that has been linked to early antibiotics. While some studies have demonstrated an increased risk of NEC, other studies have demonstrated seemingly contrary findings of decreased NEC with early antibiotics. …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Neurological diseases (NDs) are a significant cause of disability and death in the global population. However, effective treatments still need to be improved for most NDs. In recent years, cell-membrane-coated nanoparticles (CMCNPs) as drug-targeting delivery systems have become a research hotspot. Such a membrane-derived, nano drug-delivery system not only contributes to avoiding immune clearance but also endows nanoparticles (NPs) with various cellular and functional mimicries. This review article first provides an overview of the function and mechanism of single/hybrid cell-membrane-derived NPs. Then, we highlight the application and safety of CMCNPs in NDs. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities in …

Generative Music With Partitioned Quantum Cellular Automata, Eduardo Reck Miranda, Hari Shaji Feb 2023

Generative Music With Partitioned Quantum Cellular Automata, Eduardo Reck Miranda, Hari Shaji

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Cellular automata (CA) are abstract computational models of dynamic systems that change some features with space and time. Music is the art of organising sounds in space and time, and it can be modelled as a dynamic system. Hence, CA are of interest to composers working with generative music. The art of generating music with CA hinges on the design of algorithms to evolve patterns of data and methods to render those patterns into musical forms. This paper introduces methods for creating original music using partitioned quantum cellular automata (PQCA). PQCA consist of an approach to implementing CA on quantum …

Linguistic Predictors Of Engagement On Anti-Incel Forums, Daniel Beutler

Student Theses

This thesis examines the determinants of social media engagement with extremist views in general and misogynistic ones in particular. The study, which is a part of an ongoing, large-scale examination of online hate, examined posts from r/IncelTears, a sub-forum in the long-form social media Reddit dedicated to attacks on the Involuntary Celibate (‘Incel’) digital communities. Previous research on engagement – and by extension virality – of online posts has broadly implicated linguistic markers of affect, morality, extremism, and social identity. This exploratory study correlated metrics of online engagement such as the number of Upvotes and Comments that each post garnered …

Scaling Of Turbulence And Microphysics In A Convection–Cloud Chamber Of Varying Height, Subin Thomas, Fan Yang, Mikhail Ovchinnikov, Will Cantrell, Raymond Shaw

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The convection–cloud chamber enables measurement of aerosol and cloud microphysics, as well as their interactions, within a turbulent environment under steady-state conditions. Increasing the size of a convection–cloud chamber, while holding the imposed temperature difference constant, leads to increased Rayleigh, Reynolds and Nusselt numbers. Large–eddy simulation coupled with a bin microphysics model allows the influence of increased velocity, time, and spatial scales on cloud microphysical properties to be explored. Simulations of a convection–cloud chamber, with fixed aspect ratio and increasing heights of H = 1, 2, 4, and (for dry conditions only) 8 m are performed. The key findings are: …

Application Of Eugenol In Poultry To Control Salmonella Colonization And Spread, Mohammed Aljuwayd, Israa Abdullah Malli, Young Min Kwon

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The poultry sector is an essential component of agriculture that has experienced unprecedented growth during the last few decades. It is especially true for the United States, where the average intake of chicken meat increased from 10 pounds (4.5 kg) per person in 1940 to 65.2 pounds (29.6 kg) per person in 2018, while the country produced 113 billion eggs in 2019 alone. Besides providing nutrition and contributing significantly to the economy, chicken is also a natural reservoir of Salmonella, which is responsible for salmonellosis in humans, one of the significant foodborne illnesses around the globe. The increasing use of …

Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) can produce durable responses against cancer. We and others have found that a subset of patients experiences paradoxical rapid cancer progression during immunotherapy. It is poorly understood how tumors can accelerate their progression during ICB. In some preclinical models, ICB causes hyperprogressive disease (HPD). While immune exclusion drives resistance to ICB, counterintuitively, patients with HPD and complete response (CR) following ICB manifest comparable levels of tumor-infiltrating CD8

In Re B.J.W.-A., 139 Nev. Adv. Op. 1 (Jan. 12, 2023), Mackenzie Sullivan

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The Supreme Court of Nevada addressed the exception to the category A felony designation for lewdness with a child under NRS 201.230, and considered whether the juvenile court abused its discretion in certifying the appellant to stand trial as an adult. B.J. appealed the juvenile court decision to not accept jurisdiction and to certify B.J. as an adult for criminal proceedings. The Court found that the Legislature did not create a mandatory rule in NRS 201.230(5) requiring that all minors charged with lewdness with a child be adjudicated only in juvenile court. The Court also concluded that the juvenile court …

Acquisition Of New Function Through Gene Duplication In The Metallocarboxypeptidase Family, Daniel Fajardo, Ritchie Saint Jean, Peter J. Lyons

Faculty Publications

Gene duplication is a key frst step in the process of expanding the functionality of a multigene family. In order to better understand the process of gene duplication and its role in the formation of new enzymes, we investigated recent duplication events in the M14 family of proteolytic enzymes. Within vertebrates, four of 23 M14 genes were frequently found in duplicate form. While AEBP1, CPXM1, and CPZ genes were duplicated once through a large-scale, likely whole-genome duplication event, the CPO gene underwent many duplication events within fsh and Xenopus lineages. Bioinformatic analyses of enzyme specifcity and conservation suggested a greater …

Uterine fluid plays important roles in supporting early pregnancy events and its timely absorption is critical for embryo implantation. In mice, its volume is maximum on day 0.5 post-coitum (D0.5) and approaches minimum upon embryo attachment ~D4.0. Its secretion and absorption in ovariectomized rodents were shown to be promoted by estrogen and progesterone (P4), respectively. The temporal mechanisms in preimplantation uterine fluid absorption remain to be elucidated. We have established an approach using intraluminally injected Alexa Fluor™ 488 Hydrazide (AH) in preimplantation control (RhoAf/f) and P4-deficient RhoAf/fPgrCre/+ mice. In control mice, bulk entry (seen as smeared cellular staining) via uterine …
