Introducing Second-Year Medical Students To Diagnostic Reasoning Concepts And Skills Via A Virtual Curriculum, Chelsea Chang, Nevin A. Varghese, Michael Machiorlatti

School of Medicine Publications

Objectives

Curriculum for clinical reasoning in the preclinical years is sparse and the COVID-19 pandemic heightened the need for virtual curriculums.

Methods

We developed, implemented and evaluated a virtual curriculum for preclinical students scaffolding key diagnostic reasoning concepts: dual process theory, diagnostic error, problem representation and illness scripts. Fifty-five second-year medical students participated in four 45-min virtual sessions led by one facilitator.

Results

The curriculum led to increased perceived understanding and increased confidence in diagnostic reasoning concepts and skills.

Conclusions

The virtual curriculum was effective in introducing diagnostic reasoning and was well-received by second-year medical students.

Schwalb, Susan, Sophia Maier Garcia

Bronx Jewish History Project

Susan Schwalb’s father was raised on the Lower East Side to immigrant parents, while her mother grew up on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx. Her mother’s family was German immigrants from the mid-19th century, and owned and operated restaurants. Her grandparents would sell their restaurant and move to Miami, but her uncle owned a famous restaurant in Manhattan that Schwalb would visit as a child. Her mother’s family was wealthy for the time, with extravagant birthday parties that once involved an elephant. Her parents met in the Catskills and Schwalb was born in 1944.

Schwalb grew up in the …

PARP1 is a DNA-dependent ADP-Ribose transferase with ADP-ribosylation activity that is triggered by DNA breaks and non-B DNA structures to mediate their resolution. PARP1 was also recently identified as a component of the R-loop-associated protein-protein interaction network, suggesting a potential role for PARP1 in resolving this structure. R-loops are three-stranded nucleic acid structures that consist of a RNA-DNA hybrid and a displaced non-template DNA strand. R-loops are involved in crucial physiological processes but can also be a source of genome instability if persistently unresolved. In this study, we demonstrate that PARP1 binds R-loops in vitro and associates with R-loop formation …

Automatic Dispersion, Defect, Curing, And Thermal Characteristics Determination Of Polymer Composites Using Micro-Scale Infrared Thermography And Machine Learning Algorithm, Md Ashiqur Rahman, Mirza Masfiqur Rahman, Ali Ashraf

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Infrared thermography is a non-destructive technique that can be exploited in many fields including polymer composite investigation. Based on emissivity and thermal diffusivity variation; components, defects, and curing state of the composite can be identified. However, manual processing of thermal images that may contain significant artifacts, is prone to erroneous component and property determination. In this study, thermal images of different graphite/graphene-based polymer composites fabricated by hand, planetary, and batch mixing techniques were analyzed through an automatic machine learning model. Filler size, shape, and location can be identified in polymer composites and thus, the dispersion of different samples was quantified …

Both, pharmacological and genome-wide association studies suggest N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) dysfunction and excitatory/inhibitory (E/I)-imbalance as a major pathophysiological mechanism of schizophrenia. The identification of shared fMRI brain signatures of genetically and pharmacologically induced NMDAR dysfunction may help to define biomarkers for patient stratification. NMDAR-related genetic and pharmacological effects on functional connectivity were investigated by integrating three different datasets: (A) resting state fMRI data from 146 patients with schizophrenia genotyped for the disease-associated genetic variant rs7191183 of GRIN2A (encoding the NMDAR 2 A subunit) as well as 142 healthy controls. (B) Pharmacological effects of the NMDAR antagonist ketamine and the GABA-A …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

OBJECTIVE: SNOMED CT is the largest clinical terminology worldwide. Quality assurance of SNOMED CT is of utmost importance to ensure that it provides accurate domain knowledge to various SNOMED CT-based applications. In this work, we introduce a deep learning-based approach to uncover missing is-a relations in SNOMED CT.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our focus is to identify missing is-a relations between concept-pairs exhibiting a containment pattern (ie, the set of words of one concept being a proper subset of that of the other concept). We use hierarchically related containment concept-pairs as positive instances and hierarchically unrelated containment concept-pairs as negative instances …

Most eukaryotic promoter regions are divergently transcribed. As the RNA polymerase II pre-initiation complex (PIC) is intrinsically asymmetric and responsible for transcription in a single direction, it is unknown how divergent transcription arises. Here, the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Mediator complexed with a PIC (Med-PIC) was assembled on a divergent promoter and analyzed by cryoelectron microscopy. The structure reveals two distinct Med-PICs forming a dimer through the Mediator tail module, induced by a homodimeric activator protein localized near the dimerization interface. The tail dimer is associated with ∼80-bp upstream DNA, such that two flanking core promoter regions are positioned and oriented in …

The SPIRAL1 (SPR1) gene family encodes microtubule-associated proteins that are essential for the anisotropic growth of plant cells and abiotic stress resistance. Currently, little is known about the characteristics and roles of the gene family outside of Arabidopsis thaliana. This study intended to investigate the SPR1 gene family in legumes. In contrast to that of A. thaliana, the gene family has undergone shrinking in the model legume species Medicago truncatula and Glycine max. While the orthologues of SPR1 were lost, very few SPR1-Like (SP1L) genes were identified given the genome size of the two …

Online Classification Method For Motor Imagery Eeg With Spatial Information, Fengwei Yang, Peng Chen, Kai Xi, Hualin Pu, Xueyin Liu Feb 2023

Online Classification Method For Motor Imagery Eeg With Spatial Information, Fengwei Yang, Peng Chen, Kai Xi, Hualin Pu, Xueyin Liu

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: EEG-based BCI system can help the daily life and rehabilitation training of limb movement disorders patients. Due to the low signal-to-noise ratio and large individual differences of EEG signals, the accuracy and efficiency of EEG feature extraction and classification are not high, which affects the wide application of online BCI system. A CNN with spatial information is proposed for the online classification of MI-EEG signals. The reordered MI-EEG is convolved horizontally and vertically respectively. With the contralateral effect of motor imagery ERD/ERS phenomenon, the spatial information in MI-EEG is fully utilized to achieve the real-time acquisition and classification of …

Simulation Of Occluded Pedestrian Detection Based On Improved Yolo, Nan Xiang, Lu Wang, Chongliu Jia, Yuemou Jian, Xiaoxia Ma

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Aiming at the high missed detection rates and low accuracy of existing YOLO for occlusion and multi-scale pedestrian targets, an improved pedestrian detection algorithm is proposed. YOLO backbone is modified to enhance the capabilities of cross-scale feature extraction. To increase thepedestrian feature fusion capabilities of different scales, a spatial pyramid pooling module and two attention mechanisms are introduced at different positions in front of YOLO layers. Aiming at the detection performance degradation due to the extreme complexity of network module and to improve the model training efficiency, the network structure is pruned according to the actual …

Evacuation Dynamics Research Based On Evolutionary Game Theory, Qiaoru Li, Jinxiu Yan, Xiaoyong Tian, Kun Li, Xia Li

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to study the impact of individual cooperative behavior on the overall pedestrian evacuation efficiency, combined with cellular automata and social force model, the co-evolution of evacuation system dynamics and "cooperative behavior" is studied, and an evacuation dynamics research method based on evolutionary game theory is proposed. The cellular automata model is used as the basic simulation framework, and the social force model is used to represent the psychological repulsion among the practitioners. The evacuation individual strategy is updated through evolutionary game. The simulation results show that when the game gain coefficient exceeds a certain threshold, the …

Efficient Hmm Map Matching Method Using R-Tree And Trajectory Segmentation, Yanjiao Song, Jiayue Zhou, Longhao Wang, Jing Wu, Rui Li, Xiaoping Rui Feb 2023

Efficient Hmm Map Matching Method Using R-Tree And Trajectory Segmentation, Yanjiao Song, Jiayue Zhou, Longhao Wang, Jing Wu, Rui Li, Xiaoping Rui

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In view of the incapability of traditional methods to efficiently process massive trajectory data, an improved HMM (hidden-Markov model) map matching algorithm is proposed. Spatial index for road networks is established through R-tree spatial index. GPS trajectory data are segmented based on the position change rates of trajectory points. R-tree index is used to quickly determine the candidate road section that sub-trajectories belong to, and the key points of the sub-trajectories instead of the entire sub-trajectories are selected to judge which road the sub-trajectories should be matched with. The map matching of each sub-trajectory is carried out on …
