Prophages Encode And Disseminate Bacterial Immune Systems, Amelia K. Schmidt

Bacteria are under constant threat of infection by viruses called bacteriophages (phages).

As a result, bacteria have evolved diverse phage defense systems; however, these defenses are very specific and effectively defend against a narrow range of phages. I have discovered that the filamentous Pf phages which chronically infect the formidable bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa encode diverse phage defense systems. Infection by a competing phage mobilizes these systems, allowing defense systems to fluctuate in dominance in response to the ever-changing pressure of phage predation.

Despite remaining stigmatized and regarded as taboo, eating disorders (EDs) affect millions of people around the world. They are also one of the deadliest mental health disorders, with over thousands of suicides every year being tied to EDs. Recovery from eating disorders is possible; however, there is an ongoing debate about what successful or complete recovery looks like. Most extant research about eating disorder recovery (EDR) is through clinical and biomedical perspectives. However, our understanding of how EDR impacts an individual’s identity is still lacking.

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite capable of infecting any warm-blooded species yet, requires a feline definitive host to sexually reproduce. Experimental studies indicate that T. gondii infection increases an individual’s risky decision-making but, due to the intensive data collection and large samples sizes necessary, T. gondii’s role in ecosystem processes is understudied.

The instructional standards of Counselor Education and Supervision programs expect doctoral students to display professional behavior as they fulfill their five main roles in the program: counseling, supervision, teaching, research, and advocacy (CACREP, 2016). A professional disposition is important because of the close working relationships that doctoral students engage in with peers, students, and faculty. These relationships directly impact learning experiences and development of professional identities for doctoral candidates. Existing studies explore professional dispositions predominantly among master-level counseling students (Guardia, 2020; Brown, 2013) and counselor educators (Brown-Rice & Furr, 2019), but only one study involves doctoral students (Brown-Rice &Furr, 2019). …

In comparison to private sector workers, workers in the public sector in Ghana are far more likely to supplement their incomes by taking on additional jobs, which is also known as moonlighting. Previous research on the moonlighting phenomenon in Ghana has focused on general motives for taking on a second job, but the workers’ decision to moonlight may differ across sectors. With an increasing wage gap between private and public sector wages in Ghana, the differentials in these sectors could have a significant impact on the individual’s decision to moonlight.

Social-emotional learning (SEL) programs aim to enhance emotional intelligence by teaching problem solving, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship building skills. SEL interventions have been shown to improve quality of life and wellbeing, increasingly important outcomes in the wake of the staggering effects of the COVID-19 crisis on mental health. HappiGenius is a novel SEL program with the addition of mindful attention and self-compassion. We hypothesized HappiGenius would improve positive emotions, self-compassion, attention, mindful self-awareness, and social skills in a group of students. The purpose of this research study is to contribute positively to the literature and research related to the growing epidemic of suicidality among adolescents in the United States. More than one in three high school students report experiencing persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness and one in six youth report making a suicide plan in the past year. Nearly 22% of Montana teens seriously considered suicide in the past year with a full 10.2% of teens making a suicide attempt. African American English (Or AAE, a variant of Standard American English(SAE)) has several features that allow for a diverse array of temporal information to be encoded not found in SAE. Here I touch on two such methods, both regarding past events: Been and Done. Both been and done are employed by speakers to provide additional context and I posit that they appear in various constructions providing specific pragmatic information. My analysis has been grounded in previous investigations and supported by data collected colloquially.

Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus (CCHFV) is commonly transmitted by ticks and has a wide geographic distribution, being endemic throughout southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Due to climate change, this range is even expanding northward. CCHFV causes a hemorrhagic disease characterized by initial non-specific illness (fever, muscle pains, nausea) followed by severe internal and external bleeding with a case fatality rate of 5-60%. As there is no licensed therapeutics or vaccines, there is great need for highly effective countermeasures. In 2020, COVID-19 wreaked havoc on Georgia’s educational systems. Schools closed, and many continued providing education through virtual platforms. It is well-known that students with disabilities struggled during the pandemic; however, their teachers' experiences are unexplored.
