Autoantibodies against mitochondrial-derived antigens play a key role in chronic tissue inflammation in autoimmune disorders and cancers. Here, we identify autoreactive nuclear genomic DNA (nDNA)-encoded mitochondrial gene products (GAPDH, PKM2, GSTP1, SPATA5, MFF, TSPOAP1, PHB2, COA4, and HAGH) recognized by breast cancer (BC) patients' sera as nonself, supporting a direct relationship of mitochondrial autoimmunity to breast carcinogenesis. Autoreactivity of multiple nDNA-encoded mitochondrial gene products was mapped to protein-coding regions, 3' untranslated regions (UTRs), as well as introns. In addition, autoantibodies in BC sera targeted intergenic sequences that may be parts of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) genes, including LINC02381 and other …

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental organic pollutants known to have detrimental health effects. Using a mouse model, we previously demonstrated that PCB126 exposure before and during pregnancy and throughout the perinatal period adversely affected offspring glucose tolerance and/or body composition profiles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the glucose tolerance and body composition of offspring born to dams exposed to PCB126 during the nursing period only. Female ICR mice were bred, and half of the dams were exposed to either vehicle (safflower oil) or 1 μmole PCB126 per kg of body weight via oral gavage on postnatal …

Chicken Or Egg: Diversity And Innovation In The Corporate Legal Marketplace, Michele Destefano
Chicken Or Egg: Diversity And Innovation In The Corporate Legal Marketplace, Michele Destefano
Fordham Law Review
Although their bank accounts might suggest otherwise, these are not the best of times for lawyers who work in the corporate legal marketplace. Instead, the trouble with lawyers in the corporate legal marketplace is that they are failing to answer two calls to action made by corporate clients, both of which are of great magnitude and importance for the future of the profession. The first call to action is one that Professor Deborah L. Rhode focused a lot of her scholarship on: the call to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) in the profession. The second call to action is …

An Ode To Rhode: In Principle And In Practice, Scott L. Cummings
Fordham Law Review
This Essay is a tribute to Professor Deborah L. Rhode by Professor Scott L. Cummings and discusses her legacy through the impact of her scholarship and leadership on both legal ethics and the community of legal ethics scholars. It reviews Deborah’s findings on pro bono in principle and in practice, revealing a Janus face—one that is built on altruism but used to benefit individual interests. This Essay shares Professor Cummings’s own experiences with Deborah as an inspirational and courageous individual who spoke truth to power to elevate the interests of those with less power and the ideal of lawyers as …

Pakistan's Economy Under Musharraf, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles
Economic achievements during President Musharraf's regime are often dismissed outright due to abhorrence of military rule, the imposition of emergency in 2007, Pakistan's involvement in the Afghanistan war, open tussle with the judiciary, and the quest to get elected in uniform. This article is an attempt to provide a first-hand, data-driven account of the economic record of the period 2000-2008, covering macroeconomic stabilization through IMF arrangements, debt re-profiling through Paris Club, aggressive privatization yielding $3 billion, financial sector reforms, fiscal consolidation, and trade liberalization that resulted in GDP growth of approximately 6.3 percent per year, poverty headcount falling from 34 …

Syndepositional Uptake Of Uranium, Molybdenum And Vanadium Into Modern Bahamian Carbonate Sediments During Early Diagenesis, Evan Magette, Adam Turner, Yongbo Peng, Achim D. Herrmann
Faculty Publications
Syndepositional diagenesis is a complicating factor when interpreting geochemical proxies in carbonate sedimentary environments. Previous studies have suggested that carbonate deposits may preserve the geochemical and isotopic signatures of seawater that can be used for paleo-redox reconstructions. However, more work is necessary to understand how these trace metals are preserved. The present study examines shallow marine carbonate sediments from the Bahamas to better understand diagenetic effects on trace metal uptake and sequestration. Analysis of diagenetic effects and trace metal uptake follows a multi-method approach, combining sequential extraction, stable isotope analyses, and rare earth elemental analysis. Stable isotopes track bacterial sulfate …

Science Assessments As A Learning Opportunity: Feedforward With Multiple Attempts, Emily Faulconer
Publications
Feedback best practices support timely, high-quality feedback with application opportunity. Multiple attempts on assessments support learning gains. A learning management system can be used to automatically provide feedback for application on a future assessment attempt. Current research has not thoroughly investigated the student impacts or opinions on this combined strategy. In this study, students took a second attempt 46% of the time, scoring an average of 10.1% higher on their second attempt. More than 60% of students who failed their first attempt completed a second attempt. Students perceived the feedback as useful in preparing for their second attempt. Future research …

Social isolation is a relevant problem for veterans who are at risk for disengaging from others as a function of transition stress from military life to civilian life, and given high rates of exposure to trauma and psychological distress. Few researchers have examined social isolation in veterans over time, particularly during COVID-19 that led to significant barriers and restrictions on social interactions. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to assess veterans' experience of social isolation and its mental health and social functioning correlates during a 6-month period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were 188 United States veterans of the …

Microbial Motility At The Bottom Of North America: Digital Holographic Microscopy And Genomic Motility Signatures In Badwater Spring, Death Valley National Park, Carl Snyder, Jakob P. Centlvre, Shrikant Bhute, Jay Nadeau, Multiple Additional Authors
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Motility is widely distributed across the tree of life and can be recognized by microscopy regardless of phylogenetic affiliation, biochemical composition, or mechanism. Microscopy has thus been proposed as a potential tool for detection of biosignatures for extraterrestrial life; however, traditional light microscopy is poorly suited for this purpose, as it requires sample preparation, involves fragile moving parts, and has a limited volume of view. In this study, we deployed a field-portable digital holographic microscope (DHM) to explore microbial motility in Badwater Spring, a saline spring in Death Valley National Park, and complemented DHM imaging with 16S rRNA gene amplicon …

Digital Tax Arithmetic., James R. Hines Jr.
Digital Tax Arithmetic., James R. Hines Jr.
Articles
More than 20 countries recently adopted digital services taxes, with many others threatening to do so. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is attempting to convince countries to withdraw their digital taxes in return for an international agreement to implement its Pillar One proposal that would let countries tax prorated shares of the profits of foreign firms with local sales. This paper identifies incentives that countries have to impose inefficiently high rates of digital taxes and calls attention to shortcomings of the OECD’s formulary apportionment alternative. Diverging interests and the inflexible nature of the multilateral bargaining process make …

Sea level studies in the Mississippi Bight (MSB) are less abundant than in other coastal waters of USA. This study investigates the subinertial (time scales >2 days) sea level anomalies in the MSB shelf. The diagnostics of the terms in the invariant form of the momentum equation were computed to determine which terms have the most influence on the anomalies in sea level. It was determined that at subinertial scales the geostrophic balance is the dominant balance in the MSB while the non-linear and time derivative terms are insignificant relative to the Coriolis term. A Least Squares procedure was applied …

Advertising and marketing managers understand that not all brands need to be on social media, but what is not clearly understood is consumers’ engagement expectations for brands that are on social media. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of brand personality, specifically sophisticated and rugged brands, and gendered communication styles on consumers’ expectations of social media engagement. A scenario-based experiment is performed to test the hypotheses using a mock brand. The main study consisted of a Qualtrics consumer panel, and a MANOVA was utilized to examine three components of social media engagement (consumption, contribution, and creation) on the two brand …

The distributions of iodate and iodide were measured along the GEOTRACES GP15 meridional transect at 152°W from the shelf of Alaska to Papeete, Tahiti. The transect included oxygenated waters near the shelf of Alaska, the full water column in the central basin in the North Pacific Basin, the upper water column spanning across seasonally mixed regimes in the north, oligotrophic regimes in the central gyre, and the equatorial upwelling. Iodide concentrations are highest in the permanently stratified tropical mixed layers, which reflect accumulation due to light-dependent biological processes, and decline rapidly below the euphotic zone. Vertical mixing coefficients (K …
Towards An Understanding Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Crtao4: A Computational Perspective, Tanner B. Gordon
Towards An Understanding Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Crtao4: A Computational Perspective, Tanner B. Gordon
Theses and Dissertations
Materials that can withstand higher temperatures are paramount for next-generation aircraft design. Hypersonic capabilities and jet-turbine engines operate in extreme environments. Choosing materials that have high thermal stability and oxidation resistance for these applications can increase engine efficiency, reduce size, weight and power (SWaP), and increase the maneuverability of the aircraft. The mixed oxide CrTaO4 has been experimentally observed to significantly contribute to oxidation resistance at high temperatures. However, and despite its significance, its properties remain largely unknown. This work explores the thermal properties of this material from a multi-scale approach, by obtaining an accurate description of the thermodynamics …

Fast Engineering Model For Defect Production In Magnesium Oxide, Henry R. Little
Theses and Dissertations
Defect production from irradiation of materials with thicknesses much less than the mean free path for neutron interaction is explored. A model is developed using the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code from Los Alamos National Laboratory, experimental data from irradiations at the Oak Ridge High Flux Isotope Reactor, defect production theory, and atomistic simulation results to predict the total number of F-centers resulting from neutron irradiation of a MgO rod. This model accurately predicts the concentration of atomic defects under conditions closely matching experiments at long timescales, for large geometries, and requiring only 6.9 minutes on a single CPU. Garbage In ≠ Garbage Out: Exploring Gan Resilience To Image Training Set Degradations, Nicholas M. Crino
Theses and Dissertations
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have received increasing attention in recent years due to their ability to capture complex, high-dimensional data distributions without the need for extensive labeling. Since their conception in 2014, a wide array of GAN variants have been proposed featuring alternative architectures, optimizers, and loss functions with the goal of improving performance and training stability. While this research has yielded GAN variants robust to training set shrinkage and corruption, our research focuses on quantifying the resilience of a GAN architecture to specific modes of image degradation. We conduct systematic experimentation to determine empirically the effects of 10 fundamental …
