A Case Of T-Cell Large Granulocyte Lymphocytic Leukemia In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ciji Robinson, Sruthi Ramanan, Harjinder Singh, Jasdeep S. Minhas, Hazem Zebda
Rheumatology Articles
T-cell large granulocyte lymphocytic (TLGL) leukemia is a lymphoproliferative disorder involving clonal expansion of cytotoxic T-cells and subsequent cytopenia, most notably neutropenia, as well as splenomegaly. TLGL leukemia is commonly associated with autoimmune disorders, most commonly rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We present a case of a 54-year-old female with a past medical history of seropositive RA who was lost to follow-up and thus was not on any active treatment for RA for several years. She returned to the clinic with worsening joint pain, swelling, and stiffness involving multiple joints. Screen laboratory work revealed an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of 0.19 K/uL, …

Dredged Sediments Contain Potentially Beneficial Microorganisms For Agriculture And Little Harmful Cyanobacteria, Megan A. Rúa, Ashley N. Julian, Louise Stevenson
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Abstract Introduction Soils worldwide are degrading, raising concerns about our ability to feed the growing global population. Soil amendments that can alleviate degradation are gaining attention. The application of sediments dredged from waterways to agricultural fields has increasing promise as a means for improving degraded soils. However, herbaceous plant species may have difficulty establishing on dredged material because of low nutrient availability, inhibitory levels of toxins, unsuitable moisture conditions and lack of microorganisms capable of ameliorating these characteristics. To counteract these issues, we sought to understand if the use of a cover crop would increase the abundance, diversity and function …

Associations Between Preweaning Calf Feeding Behaviors With Age At First Calving And Lactational Performance Using An Automatic Calf Feeder, Turner H. Swartz, Christina Petersson-Wolfe
Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
The objective of this retrospective observational study was to determine whether preweaning calf behaviors and milk replacer (MR) intake from an automatic calf feeder were associated with age at first calving and first-lactation performance. Calves were housed in groups with access to an automatic calf feeder for 7 wk with a maximum milk allowance of 1,800 g/d of MR (12 L/d). Outcomes of interest included age at first calving (n = 137), first-lactation mature-equivalent 305-d (ME305) milk yield (n = 132), and first-lactation ME305 energy-corrected milk (ECM) yield (n = 132). Linear models included the fixed effects of the daily …

Mediators And Islamophobia: A Qualitative Case Study Of Cacrep Counseling Students' Perceptions Of Cultural Competency With Future Muslim Clients, Regina Mustafa
Education Doctorate Dissertations
Research suggests that having mental health needs and identifying as Muslim act as double stressors since some Muslims mistrust mental health providers out of fear of discrimination. Since its inception in 1981, the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) has strived to ensure higher education institutions prepare future professional counselors with the awareness, knowledge, and skills to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse clientele. In addition, CACREP’s adoption of the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCCs) indicates an educational commitment to addressing the oppression and inequities prevalent in counseling practice. In the United …

NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission promises to improve our understanding of hot Jupiters by providing an all-sky, magnitude-limited sample of transiting hot Jupiters suitable for population studies. Assembling such a sample requires confirming hundreds of planet candidates with additional follow-up observations. Here we present 20 hot Jupiters that were detected using TESS data and confirmed to be planets through photometric, spectroscopic, and imaging observations coordinated by the TESS Follow-up Observing Program. These 20 planets have orbital periods shorter than 7 days and orbit relatively bright FGK stars (10.9 < G < 13.0). Most of the planets are comparable in mass to Jupiter, although there are four planets with masses less than that of Saturn. TOI-3976b, the longest-period planet in our sample (P = 6.6 days), may be on a moderately eccentric orbit (e = 0.18 ± 0.06), while observations of the other …

Introduction: Genomic technologies continue to advance at a rapid rate, leading to continued novel gene-disease discoveries. However, despite the exponential increase in new gene discoveries, diagnostic rates in rare disease continue to range from 30-50%. To evaluate the impact of long read genome sequencing (lrGS) in a rare disease cohort, lrGS was implemented systematically in an institution-wide research program, Genomic Answers for Kids (GA4K). Methods: Individuals enrolled in GA4K, with a suspected genetic disorder, that remained undiagnosed after exome or genome sequencing, were submitted for HiFi sequencing. Probands were sequenced to a target depth of 30X coverage. Analyses included copy …

Introduction: Evidenced-based tools have long existed to combat pain and anxiety associated with needle sticks, yet the gap between knowledge and uptake persists. Prior to COVID-19, our institution initiated a quality improvement (QI) program to improve comfort measure (CM) uptake, beginning with specific clinical areas with intent to scale up over time. When the COVID-19 vaccine was approved, mass vaccination clinics provided an opportunity to rapidly improve CM uptake across the institution. Methods: Mass vaccination clinics were staffed by nurses from across the hospital. Clinics occurred in 3 waves, based on federal approval for age groups (1: 12y+, 2: 5-11y, …
No Sense Of Decency, Kathryn E. Miller
No Sense Of Decency, Kathryn E. Miller
Washington Law Review
For nearly seventy years, the Court has assessed Eighth Amendment claims by evaluating “the evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society.” In this Article, I examine the evolving standards of decency test, which has long been a punching bag for critics on both the right and the left. Criticism of the doctrine has been fierce but largely academic until recent years. Some fault the test for being too majoritarian, while others argue that it provides few constraints on the Justices’ discretion, permitting their personal predilections to rule the day. For many, the test is seen …
Fugitive Pull: Applying The Fugitive Disentitlement Doctrine To Foreign Defendants, Zachary Z. Schroeder
Fugitive Pull: Applying The Fugitive Disentitlement Doctrine To Foreign Defendants, Zachary Z. Schroeder
Washington Law Review
Defendants force courts to decide whether to use judicial time and resources to hear a case when they either flee or refuse to submit to jurisdiction. Judges in the United States possess an exceptional discretionary power to deny access to the courts in these circumstances through the fugitive disentitlement doctrine. The fugitive disentitlement doctrine developed as federal common law and permits courts to exercise discretion in declining to hear appeals or motions from defendants classified as fugitives from justice.
Historically, the fugitive disentitlement doctrine was intended to prevent courts from wasting resources adjudicating cases when a defendant has fled and …
Gone Fishing: Casting A Wide Net Using Geofence Warrants, Ryan Tursi
Gone Fishing: Casting A Wide Net Using Geofence Warrants, Ryan Tursi
Washington Law Review
Technology companies across the country receive requests from law enforcement agencies for cell phone location information near the scenes of crimes. These requests rely on the traditional warrant process and are known as geofence warrants, or reverse location search warrants. By obtaining location information, law enforcement can identify potential suspects or persons of interest who were near the scene of a crime when they have no leads. But the use of this investigative technique is controversial, as it threatens to intrude upon the privacy of innocent bystanders who had the misfortune of being nearby when the crime took place. Innocent …

Weingarten Surfaces: Curvature Flows And Stationary Properties, Morgan Robson
Weingarten Surfaces: Curvature Flows And Stationary Properties, Morgan Robson
Theses
This work considers two related topics: Weingarten surfaces and classical curvature flows. The former being the stationary solutions of the latter. Firstly, the Weingarten relations satisfied by rotationally symmetric Weingarten surfaces in Euclidean 3-space E3 are considered from three perspectives: Restrictions on the slope of the relation at umbilic points, the action of SL2(R) as fractional-linear transformations on curvature space, and variational formulations for the relations. Concerning the first, bounds are obtained on the slope of a relation in terms of the fall-off of the astigmatism at an umbilic point. For the second, the action of SL2(R) on curvature space …

Ceramic On-Demand Extrusion (CODE) is a direct ink writing process which allows for the creation of near theoretically dense ceramic components with large cross-sections due to oil-assisted drying. Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) colloidal pastes (∼d50 ≲ 1 µm) were used in CODE to produce dense (multi-road infill and ≳ 98% relative density), large continuous volume (> 1 cm3), and high fidelity (nozzle diameters ≲ 1 mm) structural ceramic components. However, many of these printed components underwent significant particle migration after forming. The reason for this particle migration defect was investigated using the coffee-ring effect for dilute solutions and rheological methods for …

High-entropy (HE) ultra-high temperature ceramics have the chance to pave the way for future applications propelling technology advantages in the fields of energy conversion and extreme environmental shielding. Among others, HE diborides stand out owing to their intrinsic anisotropic layered structure and ability to withstand ultra-high temperatures. Herein, we employed in-situ high-resolution synchrotron diffraction over a plethora of multicomponent compositions, with four to seven transition metals, with the intent of understanding the thermal lattice expansion following different composition or synthesis process. As a result, we were able to control the average thermal expansion (TE) from 1.3 x 10−6 to 6.9 …
Rule Of Law – A Basic And Eternal Principle, Arvind Datar, Sanjay Jain
Rule Of Law – A Basic And Eternal Principle, Arvind Datar, Sanjay Jain
Popular Media
Exerpt: "The expression 'Rule of law' is difficult to define but easy to understand. It postulates that a country must be governed by legal principles that are just, equitable and apply equally to all persons who are similarly placed. The rule of law, like important legal principles such as 'due process', “natural justice”, 'essential functions of legislatures' are incapable of a comprehensive definition. But this difficulty is actually their strength because it makes them basic, elastic and eternal."
