2022-2023 Christmas Bird Counts, Don Paseka
2022-2023 Christmas Bird Counts, Don Paseka
Nebraska Bird Review
Sixteen counts were run in the 2022-2023 CBC season. Because of weather and rescheduling issues, the Crawford, Harrison, and Harlan County counts were cancelled. Eight of the counts were completed during the first week of the count period and the other eight were scattered throughout the remainder of the count period. An early December cold snap seemed to drive many of the birds south, but the weather on actual count days was fairly benign: mostly dry with an average high of 34˚F and an average low of 19˚F and with three circles reporting light snow. The total number of species …

Winter Field Report, Dec. 2022 - Feb. 2023, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
Since this is a Winter Seasonal Report, it seems appropriate to lead off with notable reports of occurrences that might be considered unexpected for midwinter, of which there were several. A range of species was involved, suggesting an encompassing cause such as climate change. Of interest were northerly wintering groups of waterfowl including Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, Canvasback, Ringnecked Duck, and Hooded Merganser. Reports of wintering Tundra Swans, Whitewinged Doves, and Lesser Goldfinches continue to increase, and numerous Redwinged Blackbirds in the northeast in midwinter were unexpected. Also quite unexpected were two Sandhill Cranes wintering in the east, the state’s first …
An Analysis Of The Episodic Writing Process, Megan Kanger
An Analysis Of The Episodic Writing Process, Megan Kanger
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Writing for an episodic series vastly differs from writing for a short film. This essay explores the major differences between writing a short film in contrast to writing an episodic series and how these differences impact the writing process. The essay examines the topic by breaking down my own experience writing an episodic series and the key findings I uncovered throughout that process. I describe my series, Scythe, and the central themes and characters that encompass the series. With a central theme of death, I describe how I worked to establish an emotional tonal balance between drama and humor within …

In the Southern Ocean, it is well-known that iron (Fe) limits phytoplankton growth. Yet, other trace metals can also affect phytoplankton physiology. This study investigated feedbacks between phytoplankton growth and dissolved Fe, manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and cadmium (Cd) concentrations in Southern Ocean shipboard incubations. Three experiments were conducted in September–October 2016 near the West Antarctic Peninsula: Incubations 1 and 3 offshore in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, and Incubation 2 inshore in Bransfield Strait. Additions of Fe and/or vitamin B12 to inshore and offshore waters were employed and allowed assessment of metal (M) uptake …
Design Principles For App-Based Healthcare Interventions: A Mixed Method Approach, Loknath Sai Ambati
Design Principles For App-Based Healthcare Interventions: A Mixed Method Approach, Loknath Sai Ambati
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Despite the ubiquity of mobile health applications (apps), the practical use and success of the apps have been questionable. Design Principles (DP) can affect chronic health app user satisfaction and have been studied for ensuring favorable app usage. However, there is no consensual definition of DP within the preceding literature, which has a technical rather than an end-user-centric focus and lacks a rigorous theoretical basis. Moreover, different levels of DPs’ application can lead to differential user satisfaction as influenced by the user-contextual environment, warranting a quantitative assessment. Accordingly, the overarching question to be addressed is which DP for the self-management …

Bambi: Bluetooth Access Management & Beacon Identification, Anthony Jairam
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Cybersecurity is a constantly developing field. Patches that secured yesterday’s technology do not safeguard against occurring threats, necessitating continuous research in the field. The outbreak of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices dramatically expands the attack surface. BLE is one of the most widely applicable low-power connectivity standards. The low cost, low power consumption, and ready availability of BLE modules have made them a popular wireless technology for Internet of Things (IoT) devices and power constrained applications. However, the deployment of BLE-enabled devices enlarges the network attack surface. In spite of that, access management is insufficient for Bluetooth Low Energy devices. …

Measuring The Performance Cost Of Manual System Call Detections Via Process Instrumentation Callback (Pic), Jacob Williams
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
This quasi-experimental before-and-after study measured the performance impact of using Process Instrumentation Callback (PIC) to detect the use of manual system calls on the Windows operating system. The Windows Application Programming Interface (WinAPI), the impacts of system call monitoring, and the limitations of current detection mechanisms and their downsides were reviewed in-depth. Previous literature was evaluated that identified PIC as a unique solution to monitor system calls entirely from User-Mode, being able to rely on the Windows Kernel to intercept a target process. Unlike previous monitoring techniques, PIC must handle all system calls when performing analysis which requires an increase …
Native American Community Digital Divide: Student Insights, Chad R. Fenner
Native American Community Digital Divide: Student Insights, Chad R. Fenner
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
The digital divide continues to be an issue for many Native American individuals in rural tribal areas. This research used a qualitative grounded theory method from the data collection of semi-structured interviews with Native American university students. The open coding of the transcribed responses was used to analyze the text data from individual Native American experiences. The data analysis codes included cost, location, access, digital literacy, and technology knowledge as continuing issues. The coding also shows limited technical support or training availability in the communities. The absence of technology use increases the need to understand factors that remain digital divide …

It is well-known that a stigma exists toward tattooed individuals. In the corporate world, many employers have asked their employees to cover any skin ink to preserve the image the company may have. Even in the U.S. Army, recruits are restricted in the placement of their tattoos, not being able to have designs on their face or certain sizes on their neck and hands (Lacdan, 2022). Studies show that “people view tattooed individuals as possessing a number of negative character attributes'' (Broussard & Harton, 2018). The question we must ask ourselves is why these stigmas exist. Not only are the …

Cuyahoga County Grocery Store Assessment, 2023, Roger Sikes, B.J. Fletcher
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
High profile grocery store closures in working class neighborhoods have galvanized community efforts and political will to address grocery store gaps – albeit in a reactive manner. Grocery stores are an essential part of our communities, providing access to food, medicine, jobs, household items and banking services. Their relevance merits a robust focus on policy solutions.
This Grocery Store Assessment is a collaboration among public sector entities and neighborhood leaders to better understand the grocery store landscape, learn from implementation efforts and develop proactive policy solutions. There are 223 small, mid and large-scale grocery stores and 11,000 grocery workers in …

Background: Identifying at-risk children with optimal specificity and sensitivity to allow for the appropriate intervention strategies to be implemented is crucial to improving the health and well-being of children. We determined relationships of body mass indexes for age and sex percentile (BMI%) classifications to actual body composition using validated and convenient methodologies and compared fat and non-fat mass estimates to normative cut-off reference values to determine guideline reliability. We hypothesized that we would achieve an improved ability to identify at-risk children using simple, non-invasive body composition and index measures.
Methods: Cross-sectional study of a volunteer convenience sample of 1,064 (537 …

Use Of Sources In Ancient Compositions, James W. Barker
Use Of Sources In Ancient Compositions, James W. Barker
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
This essay contextualizes the Synoptic Gospels in terms of ancient writing materials and processes. Greco-Roman writers predominantly used waxed tablets and bookrolls, although codices emerged in the first century CE. Authors could recall texts from memory, but writers could also maintain visual contact when studying, collating, copying, quoting, or paraphrasing sources. Previous scholarship has highlighted the difficulties of interweaving multiple sources and rearranging their sayings and narratives. However, neither operation was unprecedented or overly complicated, as evinced by Septuagint recensions, Josephus’s Antiquities, and Tatian’s Diatessaron. Some writing processes were more complicated than others, but ancient authors did not always work …
Constructing A Theological Framework That Revitalizes The Missional Nature Of Churches Of Christ In South Australia, Mark Daniel Riessen
Constructing A Theological Framework That Revitalizes The Missional Nature Of Churches Of Christ In South Australia, Mark Daniel Riessen
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses the need for a theological framework that revitalizes the missional nature of Churches of Christ in South Australia. The problem identified within this ministry context was a lack of clear theological principles that informed a common understanding of identity for missional engagement. The purpose of the project was to create a study guide that informs common theological commitments and grounds congregations for missional vitality. A research and development team made up of seven Church of Christ ministers from different backgrounds was assembled to design a curriculum that addressed the problem. Through eight two-hour sessions over four months …

The New York State Dental Journal
The purpose of this study is to determine the student perceptions on teaching methods for first year dental students using zoom to teach didactics and preclinical hand skills. Because of COVID- 19 other means of teaching had to be implemented and classes were held remotely. Our aim is to determine student perceptions on retention, understanding and learning of didactic and preclinical hands on lectures. Students felt that didactic lectures through zoom increased their retention and understanding in learning the material. They felt that pre-clinical hands on lectures through zoom decreased their retention and understanding in learning.
