Until Morning, Asher Berard Mar 2023

Until Morning, Asher Berard

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Until Morning is an installation-based body of work that is rooted in fantasy through storytelling. It’s focused on a narrative about processing trauma through the self at their various stages of recovery. This exhibition consists of paintings, sculptures, audio, and videos reflecting a world built to regain authorship over unsettling memories that demand closure. The films are performative extensions of self in familiar southern Louisiana landscapes. The viewer shares perspective through the point of view of Memory, the main character depicted with pink hair. The fictional scenes all toy with notions of remembering, forgetting, and coping, while also provoking reactions …

Why Sweep The Cinders…, Gretchen Larsen

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

In my creative practice I climb down the ladder, put the glass slipper on my own foot, and build the ball for myself (and everyone I know, of course). What I mean is, instead of waiting for the prince and his kingdom to come, I have learned to pursue my own dreams. I do this by dreaming up and building objects using a mixture of traditional and new media. I work with wood, acrylic, LEDs, microcontrollers, lamp parts, and other materials including fabric and projectors. I create, live with, and create again, objects of my own design. The objects I …

Detection Of Microbial Growth In Aseptic Food Products Using Non-Invasive Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (Tdlas), Peter Myintzaw, Nicholas Brian Johnson, Máire Begley, Michael J. Callanan

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

The sensitivity and reliability of Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) for monitoring the growth of microorganisms in real food matrices was explored. The rapid and non-destructive TDLAS equipment uses laser light to monitor carbon dioxide changes due to microbial growth in the container head space which has the additional advantage of detecting contamination in products and packaging where visual inspection is not possible. TDLAS growth detection of Bacillus fengqiuensis, Candida albicans, Lactococcus lactis, Microbacterium luteolum, Paenibacillus chitinolyticus and Staphylococcus pasteuri was studied in various Ready To Feed (RTF) infant formula products. Detection of growth was correlated with cell numbers …

Foreign Direct Investment (Fdi) Role On The Economic Growth In The United Arab Emirates, Dr.Abdullah Abdelkrim Hassan Mar 2023

Foreign Direct Investment (Fdi) Role On The Economic Growth In The United Arab Emirates, Dr.Abdullah Abdelkrim Hassan

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Papers | بحوث هيئة التدريس المحكمة

Due to the recent deterioration of the global economy, economic growth (EG) has become a worldwide interest; thus, scholars must focus on this issue. Hence, this study examines the effect of FDI on the EG of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The researchers also employed inflation, employment rate, exchange rate, and industrialization as control variables. Using the secondary data gathering approach, the researchers used the World Development Indicators (WDI) database to extract data from 1986 to 2021. The researchers additionally examine the association between variables using the Non-linear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) technique. Results indicated that FDI, inflation, employment rate, …

Development Of A Biaxial Apparatus For Jamming Profiles Of Photoelastic Granular Media, H. Zheng, G. Dai, Cacey Stevens Bester, M. Wang, D. Wang

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We describe a two-dimensional biaxial apparatus that is used to conduct the experimental study of the jamming of granular media. The setup is designed based on the photoelastic imaging technique, which allows us to detect force-bearing contacts among particles, calculate the pressure on each particle according to the mean squared intensity gradient method, and compute contact forces on each particle [T. S. Majmudar and R. P. Behringer, Nature 435, 1079–1082 (2005)]. Particles float in a density-matched solution to avoid basal friction during experiments. We can compress (uniaxially or biaxially) or shear the granular system by an entangled comb geometry by …

Nursing And Allied Health Research Section Allied Health Librarians Survey, Michelle B. Bass, Jenn Monnin

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In the fall of 2022, the co-authors were fortunate to be paired with one another in the MLA mentor/mentee program, Colleague Connection. Michelle, the mentor, had recently started a position as a hospital librarian and was reconnecting with her past experiences as a nursing liaison while also quickly embracing allied health liaison responsibilities. Jenn is a liaison to the allied health fields at her institution. Upon discovering this overlap, and their shared membership in NAHRS, they thought it would be informative to learn more about the liaison work of the caucus as a whole. Michelle thought it would be a …

The Dwell Bible Listening App As An Effective Tool To Habituate Daily Bible Engagement In The Local Congregation, Daniel Russell Prugh Mar 2023

The Dwell Bible Listening App As An Effective Tool To Habituate Daily Bible Engagement In The Local Congregation, Daniel Russell Prugh

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Prugh, Daniel R. “The Dwell Bible Listening App as an Effective Tool to Habituate Daily Bible Engagement in the Local Congregation.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2023. "115" pp.

Congregational members desire to engage the Bible daily. However, oftentimes there are barriers to this goal. One of the most important barriers is that people do not regularly read. This is problematic if the church desires for people to read the Bible daily. In addition, people encounter a tsunami of information every day, that makes it hard to prioritize regular engagement with the Bible. However, the church can …

Utility Of Hand‑Held Ultrasound For Image Acquisition And Interpretation By Trained Kenyan Providers, Grace Wanjiku, Lindsay Dreizler, Shirley Wu, Janette Baird, Benjamin Wachira Mar 2023

Utility Of Hand‑Held Ultrasound For Image Acquisition And Interpretation By Trained Kenyan Providers, Grace Wanjiku, Lindsay Dreizler, Shirley Wu, Janette Baird, Benjamin Wachira

Emergency Medicine, East Africa

Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) plays a prominent role in the timely recognition and management of multiple medical, surgical, and obstetric conditions. A POCUS training program for primary healthcare providers in rural Kenya was developed in 2013. A significant challenge to this program is the acquisition of reasonably priced ultrasound machines with adequate image quality and the ability to transmit images for remote review. The goal of this study is to compare the utility of a smartphone-connected, hand-held ultrasound with a traditional ultrasound device for image acquisition and interpretation by trained healthcare providers in Kenya.

Methods: This study took place …

South Asians (SAs, individuals with ancestry from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) are among the fastest growing ethnic subgroups in the United States. SAs typically experience a high prevalence of diabetes, abdominal obesity, and hypertension, among other cardiovascular disease risk factors, which are often under recognized and undermanaged. The excess coronary heart disease risk in this growing population must be critically assessed and managed with culturally appropriate preventive services. Accordingly, this scientific document prepared by a multidisciplinary group of clinicians and investigators in cardiology, internal medicine, pharmacy, and SA-centric researchers describes key characteristics of traditional and …

Prediction Of Strawberry Yield Based On Receptacle Detection And Bayesian Inference, Sunghyun Yoon, Jung Su Jo, Steven B. Kim, Ha Seon Sim, Sung Kyeom Kim, Dong Sub Kim

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The receptacle of strawberry is a more direct part than the flower for predicting yield as they eventually become fruits. Thus, we tried to predict the yield by combining an AI technique for receptacle detection in images and statistical analysis on the relationship between the number of receptacles detected and the strawberry yield over a period of time. Five major cultivars were cultivated to consider the cultivar characteristics and environmental factors for two years were collected to consider the climate difference. Faster R–CNN based object detector was used to estimate the number of receptacles per strawberry plant in given two-dimensional …

Introduction: Population health initiatives rely on the availability and skills of an appropriate workforce to meet required goals. One global workforce initiative with demonstrated ability to expand health care services and improve access to care is the development of Advanced Nursing Practice and Advanced Practice Nursing roles. Given the sparse published information about these roles in Low and Lower-Middle-Income countries, this study seeks to describe their development and application in these countries. Design: The researchers developed a descriptive cross-sectional multilingual survey for online distribution to nursing experts within the targeted countries. Survey questions addressed demographic information on the population served, …

Why Standing Matters, Jeffrey G. Casurella Mar 2023

Why Standing Matters, Jeffrey G. Casurella

Mercer Law Review

On December 12, 2020, Donald Trump tweeted:

The Supreme Court had ZERO interest in the merits of the greatest voter fraud ever perpetrated on the United States of America. All they were interested in is “standing[,]” which makes it very difficult for the President to present a case on the merits. 75,000,000 votes

President Trump’s outburst du jour came on the heels of a Supreme Court of the United States case filed in the wake of the 2020 presidential election. That case was brought by the State of Texas against four defendants—the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the States of Georgia, …

The Role Of State Courts In Constraining Partisan Gerrymandering In Congressional Elections Mar 2023

The Role Of State Courts In Constraining Partisan Gerrymandering In Congressional Elections

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

Federal courts were once seen as the place for partisan gerrymandering challenges to be lodged, but after thirty-plus years of failing to find any redistricting plan to be a partisan gerrymander, even while holding partisan gerrymandering to be justiciable, the Supreme Court announced in Rucho v. Common Cause, 139 S.Ct. 2484, that partisan gerrymandering is not justiciable in federal courts. State courts are now seen as the only place where a remedy for egregious partisan gerrymandering might be sought (except, of course, for taking redistricting out of the hands of the state legislature and moving responsibility into a bipartisan …

The Ministerial Role Of The President Of The Senate In Counting Electoral Votes: A Post-January 6 Perspective Mar 2023

The Ministerial Role Of The President Of The Senate In Counting Electoral Votes: A Post-January 6 Perspective

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

Despite decisively losing the 2020 popular and electoral votes, Donald Trump attempted to retain presidential power by trying to persuade Vice President Mike Pence to misuse his role as President of the Senate during the electoral vote count to withhold some votes from former Vice President Joe Biden. Pence refused, and Biden’s election was recognized, but only after some Trump supporters violently assaulted the United States Capitol Building and personnel there. Congress subsequently passed legislation to address the process of counting electoral votes, which in part clarified the President of the Senate’s limited and ministerial role in the process. Although …
