Uncovering Zn2+ And Ca2+ Homeostasis And Crosstalk In Primary Hippocampal Neurons, Chen Zhang Mar 2023

Uncovering Zn2+ And Ca2+ Homeostasis And Crosstalk In Primary Hippocampal Neurons, Chen Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Zn2+ has been suggested to act as an intracellular signaling molecule due to its regulatory effects on numerous protein targets including enzymes, transcription factors, ion channels, neurotrophic factors, and postsynaptic scaffolding proteins. However, intracellular Zn2+ concentration is tightly maintained at steady levels under natural physiological conditions. Dynamic changes in intracellular Zn2+ concentration have only been detected in cells exposed to pathologic stimuli or upon receptor ligand binding. In the first project of my dissertation, for the first time, we revealed that developing neurons fire spontaneous and synchronous Zn2+ spikes at a specific time window (from 14 …

One Bite At A Time: Writing In The Theory Classroom, Jennifer Shafer England Mar 2023

One Bite At A Time: Writing In The Theory Classroom, Jennifer Shafer England

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Prose writing in the music theory classroom is often a daunting task for both instructors and students. For instructors, the very thought of the heavy grading load associated with writing assignments combined with the difficulty that we know students encounter when writing about music (especially if students’ general written communication skills are still developing) can be overwhelming, even if we personally believe that our students would benefit from engaging in written communication about music. For many students, communication in written form is a skill that they are still developing, and writing about music only adds an additional challenge—especially when they …

Living Recipes . . . And Constitutions, John Vlahoplus Mar 2023

Living Recipes . . . And Constitutions, John Vlahoplus

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

Professor Gary Lawson and Zachary Pohlman assert that we can only follow recipes and by analogy the Constitution by complying with the original public or authorial meaning of the instructions in their texts. Absent an instruction in the recipe’s text authorizing changes, any departure from historical meaning amends the recipe rather than follows it.

This response uses the works of renowned chefs to sketch a competing theory. Following a recipe requires a cook to consider many of the same factors as pluralist and living constitution theories of law including text, history, purpose, current circumstances, personal experience, and individual judgment. Even …

Linking Mathematical Models And Trap Data To Infer The Proliferation, Abundance, And Control Of Aedes Aegypti, Jing Chen, Xi Huo, Andre B. B. Wilke, John C. Beier, Chalmers Vasquez, William Petrie, Robert Stephen Cantrell, Chris Cosner, Shigui Ruan Mar 2023

Linking Mathematical Models And Trap Data To Infer The Proliferation, Abundance, And Control Of Aedes Aegypti, Jing Chen, Xi Huo, Andre B. B. Wilke, John C. Beier, Chalmers Vasquez, William Petrie, Robert Stephen Cantrell, Chris Cosner, Shigui Ruan

Mathematics Faculty Articles

Aedes aegypti is one of the most dominant mosquito species in the urban areas of Miami-Dade County, Florida, and is responsible for the local arbovirus transmissions. Since August 2016, mosquito traps have been placed throughout the county to improve surveillance and guide mosquito control and arbovirus outbreak response. In this paper, we develop a deterministic mosquito population model, estimate model parameters by using local entomological and temperature data, and use the model to calibrate the mosquito trap data from 2017 to 2019. We further use the model to compare the Ae. aegypti population and evaluate the impact of rainfall intensity …

Expanding Full-Service Community Schools In Minnesota, Angela Dabu, Kaylee Olson, Allie Paulson, Kaylee Warner Mar 2023

Expanding Full-Service Community Schools In Minnesota, Angela Dabu, Kaylee Olson, Allie Paulson, Kaylee Warner

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

While many students across Minnesota (MN) receive an excellent education, too often disenfranchised children and children from under-resourced families do not obtain the same educational benefits and outcomes as their peers. Full-Service Community Schools (FSCS) offer a better path to equity and excellence by welcoming community agencies as partners in school improvement by bringing community services into the school and empowering the people closest to students to examine disparities and target racial and economic opportunity gaps. Building on the success of the FSCS model, Minnesota legislators are proposing a $90,000,000 allocation to support and expand FSCS throughout the state. With …

Affirmative Action Initiatives In Education And Employment: Its Necessity Then, Now And In The Future, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba Mar 2023

Affirmative Action Initiatives In Education And Employment: Its Necessity Then, Now And In The Future, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba

HCBE Faculty Articles

Since its creation, affirmative action (AA) has been one of the most debated political issues in the United States and other nations such as South Africa. AA programs are, at times, seen as a tool of compensation for past discrimination toward women and particularly racial minorities. Many experts view it as an economic necessity since diverse employees can better forecast the needs of different communities. Nonetheless, some believe that AA is an obsolete and outdated practice that can lead to illegal discrimination based on race and gender. As such, it is useful to look at the rationale or purpose of …

Famines, Poverty And Intergenerational Mobility In Developing Countries, Monishankar Sarkar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The famine has not ended yet. Though much has been done, famine is still visiting some parts of the globe, ravaging economies, taking lives, and compelling people to experience acute hunger, starvation, and associated diseases. Deadly famines have impacted parts of Asia and the Pacific at different times. China has experienced the most lethal famine in history in terms of severity and fatalities. Africa is still facing famine. There are many countries worldwide, across continents, whose population is still facing hunger and starvation on an alarming scale. Thus, famine is still relevant today.

The effects of famine have been the …

The Impact Of Foreign Aid On Internal Stability: A Case Study Of Costa Rica And Venezuela, Sierra P. Tanner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the relationship between foreign aid and the internal stability of recipient countries. Foreign aid programs have been an important tool through which countries can receive support in development efforts. Through extensive case study and process tracing analysis of twelve foreign aid projects in Venezuela and Costa Rica, this thesis examines the question: Does foreign aid impact the internal stability of the recipient state? Although Costa Rica and Venezuela have different levels of internal stability, patterns emerge associating different types of aid projects with outcomes in both countries. The research finds that the impact of foreign aid on …

Story Communion: A Guidebook For Creating Sacred Space To Foster Kinship Amid Diversity In Christian Communities, Amber Hogan Jones Mar 2023

Story Communion: A Guidebook For Creating Sacred Space To Foster Kinship Amid Diversity In Christian Communities, Amber Hogan Jones

Doctor of Ministry

Christian communities are deeply divided theologically, socioeconomically, ethnically, and politically; thus, the popularity of the saying: “The most segregated time in America is on Sunday mornings.” Though there is wide consensus that this is problematic due to God’s clear desire for kinship among God’s people, most Christians are unsure what to do about this problem. This project aims to remove common barriers to diverse Christian communion by offering an affordable, easily repeatable, portable model for transformational connection across diverse Christian communities. Utilizing a blended methodology that draws upon bibliographic resources, data derived from stakeholder collaboration, and human-centered design and iteration …

The lattice vibrational dynamics in ultra-fragile Pt57Cu23P20 and Pt60Cu20P20 glasses were investigated using in situ inelastic neutron scattering to measure the evolution of the phonon density of states (DOS) through the glass transition, into the undercooled liquid phase, and through crystallization. The phonon DOS curves are remarkably similar for the undercooled liquids and the amorphous solids. The vibrational entropy was obtained with these phonon DOS curves, and changes in vibrational entropy caused by the glass transition are less than 0.05kB/atom. For these highly fragile metal/metalloid glasses, the excess vibrational entropy of the …

“Really Just Bettering Myself”: Experiences Of Division I Male Transfer Student-Athletes, Jonae Benson, Tyrell Commander, Seth Flanagan, Cardan Williams, Sarah Stokowski, Chris Corr, Michael Godfrey

Publications

The purpose of the study was to document the lived experiences of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I transfer athletes. Researchers conducted semi-structured inter- views with eight male athletes participating in Division I athletics at a comprehensive research university in the Southeast United States. Interviews revealed transfer athletes’ motivations to seek transfer and perceptions of their experience upon transfer. Not surprisingly, athletes sought to transfer for athletic, social, and academic reasons. However, participants indicated that social support structures, tangible institutional resources, and acceptance (i.e., assimilation) were integral to the positive perception of their transfer decision. The importance and potential …

Legislating Phonics: Settled Science Or Political Polemics?, David Reinking, George G. Hruby, Victoria J. Risko

Publications

In this commentary, we identify a phonics-first ideology and its polemical distortions of research and science to promote legislation that constrains and diminishes the teaching of reading. We affirm our own, and a majority of reading professionals’, commitment to teaching phonics. However, we argue that phonics instruction is more effective when embedded in a more comprehensive program of literacy instruction that accommodates students’ individual needs and multiple approaches to teaching phonics—a view supported by substantial research. After summarizing the politicization of phonics in the United States, we critique a legislated training course for teachers in Tennessee as representative of how …

The radius valley carries implications for how the atmospheres of small planets form and evolve, but this feature is visible only with highly precise characterizations of many small planets. We present the characterization of nine planets and one planet candidate with both NASA TESS and ESA CHEOPS observations, which adds to the overall population of planets bordering the radius valley. While five of our planets—TOI 118 b, TOI 262 b, TOI 455 b, TOI 560 b, and TOI 562 b—have already been published, we vet and validate transit signals as planetary using follow-up observations for four new TESS planets, including …

Improving Adolescent Contraceptive Care In The South: Policy Brief, Center For Applied Reasearch And Evaluation In Women's Health, East Tennessee State University

Center for Applied Research and Evaluation (CARE) in Women's Health Issue Briefs

Youth-friendly, person-centered contraceptive care (YFPCCC) improves the quality of care that youth receive. Research shows that clinic characteristics that support youth-friendly, person-centered care, like confidentiality and consent policies and trained providers, contribute to high quality contraceptive care for youth. As such, establishing or strengthening clinic policies requiring training and confidentiality will support a clinic’s capacity to provide YFPCCC. Understanding Southern safety-net clinics’ characteristics supporting YFPCCC and Southern youths’ perceptions of their care can highlight areas where policies may need to be established or strengthened.

The contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CNTNAP2) gene encodes for the CASPR2 protein, which plays an essential role in neurodevelopment. Mutations in CNTNAP2 are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. Rats with a loss of function mutation in the Cntnap2 gene show increased acoustic startle response (ASR) and decreased prepulse inhibition (PPI). The neural basis of this altered auditory processing in Cntnap2 knock-out rats is currently unknown. Auditory brainstem recordings previously revealed no differences between the genotypes. The next step is to investigate brainstem structures outside of the primary auditory pathway that mediate ASR and PPI, which are …

Designing Polymers With Stimuli-Responsive Degradation For Biomedical Applications, Chuanfeng Li, Zhengyu Deng, Elizabeth R. Gillies

Chemistry Publications

Early biomedical applications of polymers were in areas such as joint replacements and often involved durable polymers. However, biodegradable polymers are increasingly being used to perform temporary functions such as drug delivery or supporting cells, after which they can break down and be eliminated from the body. Polymers that degrade specifically in response to stimuli offer additional opportunities to control when and where this degradation occurs, enabling enhanced functions such as site-specific drug release and the early detection of disease. In this article, we will discuss recent advancements in the design, preparation, and application of stimuli-responsive polymer degradation. In …

Two key groups of researchers have worked in parallel to advance health equity—one on the descriptive component (those in public health sciences, e.g., epidemiologists) and one on the normative component (those in the humanities and social sciences, e.g., philosophers and ethicists). Yet a significant gulf exists between their respective research. Consequently, advances in thinking regarding the philosophical underpinnings and normative requirements of health equity have been largely divorced from the design of public health interventions that seek to reduce health inequities. As a consequence, public health interventions aiming to advance health equity may fail to target the most appropriate populations …

Open Or Openwashing? Preliminary Findings From A Content Analysis Of Publisher Websites, Courtney Waugh, Emily Carlisle-Johnston

FIMS Presentations

The term openwashing originated in 2009, when Michelle Thorne coined and defined it as the process of “spin[ning] a product or company as open, although it is not.” The term has since become more commonplace around scholars and practitioners, who sometimes call out acts of openwashing to signal that despite claims suggesting otherwise, a product, service, or company does not fulfill requirements to be Open.

A recent literature review by the authors concluded that while research on the topic is minimal, commentary on openwashing coalesces around two themes: marketing and transparency. Openness as a virtue has become a marketing asset …

Background Alterations within large‐scale brain networks—namely, the default mode (DMN) and salience networks (SN)—are present among individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous real‐time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography neurofeedback studies suggest that regulating posterior cingulate cortex (PCC; the primary hub of the posterior DMN) activity may reduce PTSD symptoms and recalibrate altered network dynamics. However, PCC connectivity to the DMN and SN during PCC‐targeted fMRI neurofeedback remains unexamined and may help to elucidate neurophysiological mechanisms through which these symptom improvements may occur. Methods Using a trauma/emotion provocation paradigm, we investigated psychophysiological interactions over a single session of …
