Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

For decades, visual entrainment paradigms have been widely used to investigate basic visual processing in healthy individuals and those with neurological disorders. While healthy aging is known to be associated with alterations in visual processing, whether this extends to visual entrainment responses and the precise cortical regions involved is not fully understood. Such knowledge is imperative given the recent surge in interest surrounding the use of flicker stimulation and entrainment in the context of identifying and treating Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In the current study, we examined visual entrainment in eighty healthy aging adults using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and a 15 Hz …

3d Heated Mould Tool Development For The Manufacture Of Pla Matrix Composites Via In Situ Polymerization (Isp) During Monomer Infusion Under Flexible Tooling (Mift), Yang Qin, John Summerscales, Richard Cullen, Jasper Graham-Jones, Maozhou Meng, Richard Pemberton

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Due to the greater awareness of the environmental issues, the use of “greener” materials to substitute for synthetic fibre reinforcements and petrochemical polymer matrices is growing rapidly. Therefore, to minimise the ecological impact, the SeaBioComp project aims to produce natural fibre bio-based thermoplastic composites for marine applications. The University of Plymouth is developing monomer infusion under flexible tooling (MIFT) for the manufacture of bio-based composites via in situ polymerisation (ISP). The monomer material selection identified methyl methacrylate (MMA) for PMMA and L-lactide for PLA as potential matrix systems for marine composites. MMA can be processed at ambient temperature in a …

How To Train Your Digital Commons, Savanna Nolan, Wendy Moore

Presentations

Creating and managing institutional repositories using tools like Digital Commons can seem large and intimidating at first, but you too can train these monsters to do your bidding! The UGA Law Library will discuss three strategies we've used to be more efficient, create new workflows, and increase public discoverability by partnering with state and national digital libraries. We will focus on the ingestion of law school journals, digitization of historical photographs, recordings, and treatises, and the metadata to facilitate wider access.

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Identifying methods to modulate the reactivity of metal hydrides is lacking yet highly desirable given the role they play in a plethora of catalytic applications. Herein we report novel methodology to amplify the reactivity of metal hydrides through the design of well-defined heterometallic bridged hydride species. Catalytic hydroboration of quinolines was dramatically altered by the addition of a secondary metal to bridge the Al–hydride species LAlH. Specifically, the addition of Ni(COD)2 led to the formation of novel heterotrimetallic species 1 which features Ni participating in 3-center bonding with sterically accessible Al–H species and exhibits catalytic hydroboration of sterically encumbered quinolines …

I use autoethnography to ground the study in my lived experience. By doing so, I present intimate accounts of my communication with others across my lifespan to function as background …

Efficacy And Outcome Beliefs Of General And Special Education Teachers Working With Culturally Linguistically Diverse Students With Disabilities, Jennifer L. Hastings Mar 2023

Efficacy And Outcome Beliefs Of General And Special Education Teachers Working With Culturally Linguistically Diverse Students With Disabilities, Jennifer L. Hastings

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand general and special education teacher perceptions about collective teacher efficacy (CTE), culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy (CRTSE), and culturally responsive instruction outcome expectancy (CRIOE) and the educational success of culturally linguistically diverse students (CLD) with disabilities. Forty-four teachers (16 general educators and 28 special educators) from six Midwestern school districts completed a survey consisting of CTE, CRTSE, and CRIOE. The findings from this study suggest general and special education teacher participants did not perceive themselves or their colleagues as culturally responsive. Yet, general and special education teachers agreed that CRT positively affects student …

Lipofuscin is an autofluorescent (AF) pigment formed by lipids and misfolded proteins, which accumulates in postmitotic cells with advanced age. Here, we immunophenotyped microglia in the brain of old C57BL/6 mice (>18 months old) and demonstrate that in comparison to young mice, one-third of old microglia are AF, characterized by profound changes in lipid and iron content, phagocytic activity, and oxidative stress. Pharmacological depletion of microglia in old mice eliminated the AF microglia following repopulation and reversed microglial dysfunction. Age-related neurological deficits and neurodegeneration after traumatic brain injury (TBI) were attenuated in old mice lacking AF microglia. Furthermore, increased …

The identification of transcriptomic and protein biomarkers prognosticating recurrence risk after chemoradiation of localized squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) has been limited by a lack of available fresh tissue at initial presentation. We analyzed archival FFPE SCCA specimens from pretreatment biopsies prior to chemoradiation for protein and RNA biomarkers from patients with localized SCCA who recurred (N = 23) and who did not recur (N = 25). Tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment (TME) were analyzed separately to identify biomarkers with significantly different expression between the recurrent and non-recurrent groups. Recurrent patients had higher mean protein expression of …

Red clover necrotic mosaic virus (RCNMV) is a segmented positive-strand RNA virus consisting of RNA1 and RNA2. Previous studies demonstrated that efficient translation of RCNMV RNA2 requires de novo synthesis of RNA2 during infections, suggesting that RNA2 replication is required for its translation. We explored a potential mechanism underlying the regulation of replication-associated translation of RNA2 by examining RNA elements in its 5' untranslated region (5'UTR). Structural analysis of the 5'UTR suggested that it can form two mutually exclusive configurations: a more thermodynamically stable conformation, termed the 5'-basal stem structure (5'BS), in which 5'-terminal sequences are base paired, and an …

Towards A Biomarker For Acute Arterial Thrombosis Using Complete Blood Count And White Blood Cell Differential Parameters In Mice, Hee Jeong Jang, Dawid Schellingerhout, Jiwon Kim, Jinyong Chung, Dong-Eog Kim

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

There is no blood biomarker diagnostic of arterial thrombosis. We investigated if arterial thrombosis per se was associated with alterations in complete blood count (CBC) and white blood cell (WBC) differential count in mice. Twelve-week-old C57Bl/6 mice were used for FeCl3-mediated carotid thrombosis (n = 72), sham-operation (n = 79), or non-operation (n = 26). Monocyte count (/µL) at 30-min after thrombosis (median 160 [interquartile range 140-280]) was ~ 1.3-fold higher than at 30-min after sham-operation (120 [77.5-170]), and twofold higher than in non-operated mice (80 [47.5-92.5]). At day-1 and -4 post-thrombosis, compared with 30-min, monocyte count decreased by about …

Restoration success in degraded rangelands often depends on a site's resilience to disturbance and resistance to invasive plants. Because it is more difficult to restore plant communities after they are dominated by invasive species, a potential approach is proactive restoration in sites at risk of crossing degradation thresholds (e.g. initiating restoration prior to invasive grass dominance). When developing a new restoration approach, it is important to consider operational feasibility, including social, budgetary, and environmental factors. Accordingly, we studied influences within land management agencies on the adoption of a specific proactive restoration approach: out-planting native grass and forb seedlings into sagebrush …

Progranulin Oncogenic Network In Solid Tumors, Elisa Ventura, Giacomo Ducci, Reyes Benot Dominguez, Valentina Ruggiero, Antonino Belfiore, Elena Sacco, Marco Vanoni, Renato V. Iozzo, Antonio Giordano, Andrea Morrione

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Progranulin is a pleiotropic growth factor with important physiological roles in embryogenesis and maintenance of adult tissue homeostasis. While-progranulin deficiency is associated with a broad range of pathological conditions affecting the brain, such as frontotemporal dementia and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, progranulin upregulation characterizes many tumors, including brain tumors, multiple myeloma, leiomyosarcoma, mesothelioma and epithelial cancers such as ovarian, liver, breast, bladder, adrenal, prostate and kidney carcinomas. The increase of progranulin levels in tumors might have diagnostic and prognostic significance. In cancer, progranulin has a pro-tumorigenic role by promoting cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasiveness, anchorage-independent growth and resistance to chemotherapy. In …

An organization is a place for several people or groups who carry out activities calling for goals with profit and non-profit plans. Organizational development, both profit and non-profit, requires a leader who can show his political will to run the organization. A leader in a non-profit organization still needs to pay attention to the interests of the members and those served. This study discusses servant leadership as political will in running non-profit organizations in South Tangerang City, Banten, Indonesia. The method used is qualitative, with a case study in a non-profit organization in the South Tangerang area. The study involved …

Background: Studies showed that folate and related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) could predict prostate cancer (PCa) risk. However, little is known about the interactions of folate-related SNPs associated with PCa aggressiveness. The study’s objective is to evaluate SNP–SNP interactions among the DHFR 19-bp polymorphism and 10 SNPs in folate metabolism and the one-carbon metabolism pathway associated with PCa aggressiveness. Methods: We evaluated 1294 PCa patients, including 690 European Americans (EAs) and 604 African Americans (AAs). Both individual SNP effects and pairwise SNP–SNP interactions were analyzed. Results: None of the 11 individual polymorphisms were significant for EAs and AAs. Three SNP–SNP …

We report a peculiar variable blue star in the globular cluster (GC) NGC 6397, using Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging. Its position in the colour–magnitude diagrams and its spectrum are consistent with this star being a helium-core white dwarf (He WD) in a binary system. The optical light curve shows a periodicity at 18.5 h. We argue that this periodicity is due to the rotation of the WD and possibly due to magnetic spots on the surface of the WD. This would make this object the first candidate magnetic He WD in any GC, and the first candidate magnetic WD …

How Are Secure Attachment Relationships Fostered Through Talk Between Teachers And Students Who Have Been Adopted? A Conversation Analysis, R Phillips, R Dallos, S Minton, P Keohane

School of Psychology

Despite the growing recognition of the importance of supportive teacher–student relationships to create safety for young people who have experienced early adversity and trauma, there is not a clear understanding of what factors make for positive school relationships and how these can be fostered. The aims of the study were to explore how children with challenging emotional backgrounds are supported by their key adult in school and how this occurs in the process of conversations between them. Three student–teacher pairs from a specialist school took part in a semi-structured interview about their relationship. Data was analysed using conversation analysis. Analysis …
