Family-centered care (FCC) includes collaboration between families and healthcare providers, the creation of flexible policies, and the family taking an active role in the delivery of care. Secondary school athletic trainers provide care for underage patients in school-based health systems, making them responsible for maintaining communication with parents, guardians, and/or caregivers. This cross-sectional survey investigated the extent to which athletic trainers (n = 205) include aspects of FCC in their daily secondary school clinical practice (current practices = CP) and whether they believe that aspect of care is necessary for FCC to be provided in athletic training (perceived necessary = …

BACKGROUND: Previous animal model studies have highlighted a role for cholesterol and its oxidized derivatives (oxysterols) in uterine contractile activity, however, a lipotoxic state associated with hypercholesterolemia may contribute to labor dystocia. Therefore, we investigated if maternal mid-pregnancy cholesterol and oxysterol concentrations were associated with labor duration in a human pregnancy cohort.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of serum samples and birth outcome data from healthy pregnant women (N = 25) with mid-pregnancy fasting serum samples collected at 22-28 weeks of gestation. Serum was analyzed for total-C, HDL-C, and LDL-C by direct automated enzymatic assay and oxysterol profile including …

Assessment Of The Eligibility Of Triglyceride;Glucose Index And Triglyceride;High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio As Applicable Insulin Resistance Indices Among Overweight/Obese Egyptians, Ghada A. Omar, Mona A.E A. Hussein, Wafaa S. Hegab
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background Insulin resistance (IR) means the requirement of a higher insulin concentration to produce the expected biological effect. It was proposed that triglycerides–glucose index (TY G) and triglycerides–high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL) were dependable, applicable, and less-expensive markers of IR. However, their results varied significantly among different ethnic groups. Aim To assess the eligibility of TY G and TG/HDL as IR indices among overweight and/or obese Egyptians. Patients and methods The participants in this cross-sectional study were 328 overweight and/or obese Egyptians. Their fasting blood glucose, TG, HDL, and fasting insulin blood concentrations were estimated. Homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), …

Syndemics And Social Factors: Infectious Disease Patterns Within The Population Of People Experiencing Homelessness In The United States, Kathleen Berzonsky
Syndemics And Social Factors: Infectious Disease Patterns Within The Population Of People Experiencing Homelessness In The United States, Kathleen Berzonsky
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Individuals experiencing homelessness are at increased risk of suffering from infectious diseases. This is due to a number of social factors and healthcare disparities, as well as the idea of syndemics, by which diseases cluster together to worsen disease burden. Current intervention strategies approach treatment from a post-infection perspective, but reducing transmission rates of infectious diseases within the population of people experiencing homelessness will require a shift in the healthcare framework. The issue of people experiencing homelessness must be viewed through a biosocial lens, focusing on preventative care and treatment. I provide an overview of the social factors governing infectious …

Correlation Between Neutrophil-To-Lymphocyte Ratio After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention And The Size Of Infarction In Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction, Mohamed R. Badran
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background Inflammatory processes have a role in the pathogenesis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), left ventricular remodeling, and repair. Infarct size (IS) is a strong predictor of prognosis following AMI. Several tools are used to predict IS, but most of them are expensive and inaccessible all the time. So, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a marker of inflammation is an easy and cheap tool to predict IS. Aim To assess if post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) NLR can predict IS in patients with AMI. Patients and methods The study included 11 125 patients with AMI treated with primary PCI. We used cardiovascular …

Background The first few hours after birth are very critical for newborns to adapt to the extrauterine environment. However, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is very common in newborns, particularly in those with shorter gestation ages, sepsis, and fewer platelet counts. The evaluation of respiratory management with current noninvasive ventilation (NIV) support strategies in preterm infants present within the neonatal intensive care unit, as well as drawbacks of NIV modes including nasal continuous positive airway pressure, nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation, and high-flow nasal cannula, is also critical for those patients. This study aimed to compare different modes of NIV to …

At the group level, antidepressant efficacy of rTMS targets is inversely related to their normative connectivity with subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC). Individualized connectivity may yield better targets, particularly in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders who may have aberrant connectivity. However, sgACC connectivity shows poor test-retest reliability at the individual level. Individualized resting-state network mapping (RSNM) can reliably map inter-individual variability in brain network organization. Thus, we sought to identify individualized RSNM-based rTMS targets that reliably target the sgACC connectivity profile. We used RSNM to identify network-based rTMS targets in 10 healthy controls and 13 individuals with traumatic brain injury-associated depression …

The prototypic cancer-predisposition disease Fanconi Anemia (FA) is identified by biallelic mutations in any one of twenty-three FANC genes. Puzzlingly, inactivation of one Fanc gene alone in mice fails to faithfully model the pleiotropic human disease without additional external stress. Here we find that FA patients frequently display FANC co-mutations. Combining exemplary homozygous hypomorphic Brca2/Fancd1 and Rad51c/Fanco mutations in mice phenocopies human FA with bone marrow failure, rapid death by cancer, cellular cancer-drug hypersensitivity and severe replication instability. These grave phenotypes contrast the unremarkable phenotypes seen in mice with single gene-function inactivation, revealing an unexpected synergism between Fanc mutations. Beyond …

The regenerative potential of the endometrium is attributed to endometrial stem cells; however, the signaling pathways controlling its regenerative potential remain obscure. In this study, genetic mouse models and endometrial organoids are used to demonstrate that SMAD2/3 signaling controls endometrial regeneration and differentiation. Mice with conditional deletion of SMAD2/3 in the uterine epithelium using Lactoferrin-iCre develop endometrial hyperplasia at 12-weeks and metastatic uterine tumors by 9-months of age. Mechanistic studies in endometrial organoids determine that genetic or pharmacological inhibition of SMAD2/3 signaling disrupts organoid morphology, increases the glandular and secretory cell markers, FOXA2 and MUC1, and alters the genome-wide distribution …

The κ-opioid receptor (KOR) has emerged as an attractive drug target for pain management without addiction, and biased signaling through particular pathways of KOR may be key to maintaining this benefit while minimizing side-effect liabilities. As for most G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), however, the molecular mechanisms of ligand-specific signaling at KOR have remained unclear. To better understand the molecular determinants of KOR signaling bias, we apply structure determination, atomic-level molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and functional assays. We determine a crystal structure of KOR bound to the G protein-biased agonist nalfurafine, the first approved KOR-targeting drug. We also identify an arrestin-biased …
