Arctic rivers provide an integrated signature of the changing landscape and transmit signals of change to the ocean. Here, we use a decade of particulate organic matter (POM) compositional data to deconvolute multiple allochthonous and autochthonous pan-Arctic and watershed-specific sources. Constraints from carbon-to-nitrogen ratios (C:N), δ13C, and Δ14C signatures reveal a large, hitherto overlooked contribution from aquatic biomass. Separation in Δ14C age is enhanced by splitting soil sources into shallow and deep pools (mean ± SD: −228 ± 211 vs. −492 ± 173‰) rather than traditional active layer and permafrost pools (−300 ± 236 vs. −441 ± 215‰) that do …

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

At St. John Fisher University, a primarily undergraduate institution in upstate New York, undergraduates in any major can participate in a ten-week intensive Summer Fellows Research Program overseen by the Center for Student Research and Creative Work. Students partner with faculty or staff mentors to dive deep into a disciplinary question or topic, learning the methods for research study along with their mentor. Oftentimes, students drive the question design themselves, further enhancing their experience in this high-impact practice. Throughout the program, students and mentors are supported through stipends, supply funds, professional development and community building sessions, and dissemination opportunities.

Delivering Computer-Based Training Within State Prisons, Kunal Jha Mar 2023

Delivering Computer-Based Training Within State Prisons, Kunal Jha

Theses and Dissertations

Internet-connected devices are ubiquitous, and our built environment allows us to tap into formerly impossible solutions. As our world increasingly depends on technology to operate, one demographic cannot gain exposure to internet-connected devices or web-based educational programs: incarcerated individuals. The Department of Justice reports that 5 out of 6 State Prisoners are arrested and returned to prison within nine years of their initial release. Research shows that education is a pathway to reducing the U.S. prison population. Individuals who participated in any educational program are 43 percent less likely to return to prison.1 Prisons in the United States often partner …

An International Wheat Diversity Panel Reveals Novel Sources Of Genetic Resistance To Tan Spot In Australia, Julian Taylor, Dorthe Jorgensen, Caroline S. Moffat, Ken J. Chalmers, Rebecca Fox, Grant J. Hollaway, Melissa J. Cook, Stephen M. Neate, Pao Theen See, Manisha Shankar

Biosecurity Research Articles

Tan spot is a foliar disease in wheat caused by the fungal pathogen Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Ptr) and has been reported to generate up to 50% yield losses under favourable disease conditions. Although farming management practices are available to reduce disease, the most economically sustainable approach is establishing genetic resistance through plant breeding. To further understand the genetic basis for disease resistance, we conducted a phenotypic and genetic analysis study using an international diversity panel of 192 wheat lines from the Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), the International Centre for Agriculture in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and Australian (AUS) wheat …

Characterizing The Editing Modes Of Duplicated Leucyl-Trna Synthetases In The Archaea Sulfolobus Islandicus, Evan T. Strandquist

Theses and Dissertations

Aminoacyl-transfer RNA synthetases (aaRSs) catalyze the attachment of an amino acid to the 3’-end of a cognate tRNA in a two-step reaction, fulfilling a pivotal role in RNA translation by providing “charged” tRNA for protein synthesis. Synthetases possess a catalytic core where amino acids are activated via adenylation with the subsequent transfer of that activated amino acid to the acceptor adenosine at position 76 of the tRNA sequence.1,2 The fidelity of tRNA aminoacylation is essential for faithful protein synthesis and requires the aaRS to discriminate against chemically and structurally similar amino acids, though some studies suggest that aaRS-dependent errors can …

Abortions At Sea: In Search Of Creative Reproductive Healthcare Solutions Post-Dobbs, William Fox Mar 2023

Abortions At Sea: In Search Of Creative Reproductive Healthcare Solutions Post-Dobbs, William Fox

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog

Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs, access to reproductive healthcare and the right to abortion have been severely restricted across the United States. Indeed, within days of the decision, multiple states implemented trigger laws criminalizing abortion (in some cases without exceptions for instances of rape or incest) to the detriment of millions women across the country. This infringement on a woman's right to choose her own healthcare needs has profoundly impacted women living in conservative-led states, particularly minorities and those in the American South.

Made In His Image: How Christian God Image Influences Interpersonal Judgments Of Severe Mental Illness, Austin Davis

Undergraduate Honors Theses

After a review of the relevant literature on God image and interpersonal judgment theories and research, a priming study was used to analyze the relationship between God image and judgment of people with severe mental illness. Participants made judgments of a video presentation of a man with schizophrenia either before or after being given a questionnaire about their God image. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) analysis showed no statistically significant differences between those who were primed to reflect on their God image before making the judgment and those who were not, although the small effect size (d = -0.30) indicated …

Stony Brook University Ka-Band Polarimetric Radar And Mobile Sounding Data From Snowstorm Observations, Mariko Oue

SoMAS Research Data

Snowbands in the comma head of winter storms are responsible for much of the heavy snowfall over the northeast United States. Because of the large societal impacts of these winter storms, they have been studied for decades using both numerical models and observations. However, limited knowledge still exists about ~100 m scale precipitation processes within U.S. Northeast coastal snowstorms because of a lack of high-resolution observations. We collected observational data for the U.S. Northeast coastal snowstorms using high-resolution, high-sensitivity Ka-band cloud radar and mobile sounding system. The observed snowstorm cases includes 4 January 2018, 18 January 2020, 16-17 December 2020, …

The Perception Of Stigma As A Barrier To Help-Seeking Among Immigrant Populations, Zuha Qadeer Mar 2023

The Perception Of Stigma As A Barrier To Help-Seeking Among Immigrant Populations, Zuha Qadeer

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Immigrants receive mental health services less than their U.S.-born counterparts, even after accounting for the lower rate of mental health difficulties often found among these populations. Stigma is one such barrier that is significant in reducing mental health service utilization among immigrant populations. This study explores how immigrants perceive stigma as a barrier to seeking help for trauma-related mental health concerns. Using qualitative data from a study on an adaptation of Written Exposure Therapy in Latinx immigrants (Andrews et. al, 2022), I examined the role of stigma in participants’ perceived barriers to care and their proposed strategies for reducing them. …

Prognostication Of Dna Damage Response Protein Expression Patterns In Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Ti'ara L Griffen, Fieke W Hoff, Yihua Qiu, Jan Burger, William Wierda, Steven M Kornblau

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Proteomic DNA Damage Repair (DDR) expression patterns in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia were characterized by quantifying and clustering 24 total and phosphorylated DDR proteins. Overall, three protein expression patterns (C1-C3) were identified and were associated as an independent predictor of distinct patient overall survival outcomes. Patients within clusters C1 and C2 had poorer survival outcomes and responses to fludarabine, cyclophosphamide, and rituxan chemotherapy compared to patients within cluster C3. However, DDR protein expression patterns were not prognostic in more modern therapies with BCL2 inhibitors or a BTK/PI3K inhibitor. Individually, nine of the DDR proteins were prognostic for predicting overall survival and/or …

DNA damage response (DNADR) recognition and repair (DDR) pathways affect carcinogenesis and therapy responsiveness in cancers, including leukemia. We measured protein expression levels of 16 DNADR and DDR proteins using the Reverse Phase Protein Array methodology in acute myeloid (AML) (n = 1310), T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) (n = 361) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) (n = 795) cases. Clustering analysis identified five protein expression clusters; three were unique compared to normal CD34+ cells. Individual protein expression differed by disease for 14/16 proteins, with five highest in CLL and nine in T-ALL, and by age in …

Clinicopathological Classification Of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor-Associated Myocarditis: Possible Refinement By Measuring Macrophage Abundance, Jesus Jimenez, Nicolas Kostelecky, Joshua D Mitchell, Kathleen W Zhang, Chieh-Yu Lin, Daniel J Lenihan, Kory J Lavine Mar 2023

Clinicopathological Classification Of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor-Associated Myocarditis: Possible Refinement By Measuring Macrophage Abundance, Jesus Jimenez, Nicolas Kostelecky, Joshua D Mitchell, Kathleen W Zhang, Chieh-Yu Lin, Daniel J Lenihan, Kory J Lavine

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) myocarditis is associated with high morbidity and mortality. While endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) is considered a gold standard for diagnosis, the sensitivity of EMB is not well defined. Additionally, the pathological features that correlate with the clinical diagnosis of ICI-associated myocarditis remain incompletely understood.

METHODS: We retrospectively identified and reviewed the clinicopathological features of 26 patients with suspected ICI-associated myocarditis based on institutional major and minor criteria. Seventeen of these patients underwent EMB, and the histopathological features were assessed by routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining for CD68, a macrophage marker.

RESULTS: …
