Are Humans Superior To Other Animals?, Harold Herzog

Herzog - Companion Animal Issues

Many nonhuman animals exhibit behaviors that vastly exceed human capacities.
Imitation and social learning occur in species ranging from honey bees to chimpanzees. The evolution of our special capacity to use symbolic language to transmit knowledge made cumulative culture a uniquely human phenomenon.

Zayed University Library, Open Access And The Place Of The University Archives In A Dynamic Academic Library Set-Up, Lekoko Kenosi

IATUL 2023 Slides

Zayed University Library, like most academic libraries the world over, subscribes to the principle of open access to knowledge. Open access works to removes barriers to information, advocates unrestricted use of electronic resources, and strives to facilitate readers with readily available information. This approach plays a critical role in supporting universities’ core mission of teaching, faculty and student research, and community outreach engagements. Similarly, the Archives, like its library counterpart, is home to a rich array of information capable of supporting teaching, research and community outreach initiatives. However, due to the confidential nature of materials in the archives, many archival …

Centering Equity In Assessment: Theories, Models And Practices, Anne E. Lundquist Mar 2023

Centering Equity In Assessment: Theories, Models And Practices, Anne E. Lundquist

Measures of Success Series

Assessment data can be a valuable tool to explore inequities on campus and move to remedy them. But assessment itself is not apolitical or objective and the approaches we use and the mindfulness with which we conduct assessment can advance equity in higher education or perpetuate inequities and cause harm. This session will highlight the critical role of cultivating individual awareness as assessors; discuss the context and scholarly history of equity-centered and equity-minded assessment; share frameworks for considering various approaches to centering equity in assessment; and provide some examples of practice and resources. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect …

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

AIMS: Atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with cardiac amyloidosis (CA) has been linked with a worse prognosis. The current study aimed to determine the outcomes of AF catheter ablation in patients with CA.

METHODS AND RESULTS: The Nationwide Readmissions Database (2015-2019) was used to identify patients with AF and concomitant heart failure. Among these, patients who underwent catheter ablation were classified into two groups, patients with and without CA. The adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of index admission and 30-day readmission outcomes was calculated using a propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. A total of 148 134 patients with AF undergoing catheter …

Spoilage Pseudomonas Survive Common Thermal Processing Schedules And Grow In Emulsified Meat During Extended Vacuum Storage, Samuel C. Watson, Rebecca A. Furbeck, Samodha C. Fernando, Byron D. Chaves, Gary Sullivan Mar 2023

Spoilage Pseudomonas Survive Common Thermal Processing Schedules And Grow In Emulsified Meat During Extended Vacuum Storage, Samuel C. Watson, Rebecca A. Furbeck, Samodha C. Fernando, Byron D. Chaves, Gary Sullivan

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Some Pseudomonas species are common meat spoilage bacteria that are often associated with the spoilage of fresh meat. The recently reported ability of these bacteria to also spoil cooked and vacuum packaged meat products has created the need to investigate all potential routes of spoilage they may be able to utilize. The objective of this experiment was to determine if spoilage Pseudomonas spp. survive thermal processing and grow during refrigerated storage under vacuum. Pseudomonas spp. isolates collected from spoiled turkey products were inoculated into a salted and seasoned meat emulsion that was vacuum sealed and thermally treated to final temperatures …

Mentorship Of Novice Pediatric Critical Care Nurse Practitioners To Improve Role Transition, Rachael E. Crowe

Dissertations

The transition from registered nurse (RN) to nurse practitioner (NP) is difficult for many new graduates, leading to low job satisfaction and poor retention with high cost to the employer (Fitzpatrick & Gripshover, 2016; Horner 2017). A mentorship program was developed and implemented to improve transition to practice.

The Effect Of Experimenter Demand On Inference, David Danz, Marissa Lepper, Guillermo Lezama, Priyoma Mustafi, Lise Verterlund, Alistair Wilson, K. Pun Winichakul

Economics: Faculty Publications

Experimenter demand is a clear threat to the validity of experimental results. To understand the extent of this threat for lab studies, we apply the quantitative frame- work from de Quidt, Haushofer and Roth (2018) to explore whether experimenter demand can generate flawed qualitative inference in experimental studies, using four classic behavioral findings. In these four settings we examine the extent to which demand can alter the nature of a comparative-static conclusion, a stronger test of the potential distortions resulting from experimenter demand. Starting with the laboratory population, we demonstrate that even in a stark environment with deliberate researcher attempts …

Research suggests that androgens increase skeletal muscle growth by modulating polyamine biosynthesis. As such, the objective of this study was to investigate effects of anabolic hormones, polyamine precursors, and polyamines relative to proliferation, protein synthesis, and the abundance of mRNA involved in polyamine biosynthesis, proliferation, and protein synthesis in C2C12 and Sol8 cells. Cultures were treated with anabolic hormones (trenbolone acetate and/or estradiol), polyamine precursors (methionine or ornithine), or polyamines (putrescine, spermidine, or spermine). Messenger RNA was isolated 0.5 or 1, 12, or 24 h post-treatment. The cell type had no effect (p > 0.10) on proliferation, protein synthesis, or …
