Simulations Of Morphology Control Of Self-Assembled Amphiphilic Surfactants, Qinyu Zhu, Douglas R. Tree
Faculty Publications
One of the grand challenges of amphiphilic self-assembly is the design of ordered structures whose morphology or shape can be explicitly and dynamically controlled by adjusting the properties of the amphiphiles or their surroundings. Such a capacity would enable researchers to create synthetic systems with functionality that meets or exceeds biological cells, and provide a robust platform for a broad range of engineering applications such as artificial tissues, drug delivery, and separation membranes. Despite significant progress, important fundamental questions remain unanswered, due in part to the limited resolution and the restricted parameter spaces that are readily accessible in experiments. Computational …

Toward Efficient Rendering: A Neural Network Approach, Qiqi Hou
Dissertations and Theses
Physically-based image synthesis has attracted considerable attention due to its wide applications in visual effects, video games, design visualization, and simulation. However, obtaining visually satisfactory renderings with ray tracing algorithms often requires casting a large number of rays and thus takes a vast amount of computation. The extensive computational and memory requirements of ray tracing methods pose a challenge, especially when running these rendering algorithms on resource-constrained platforms, and impede their applications that require high resolutions and refresh rates. This thesis presents three methods to address the challenge of efficient rendering.
First, we present a hybrid rendering method to speed …

Influence Of Canonical And Non-Canonical Ifnlr1 Isoform Expression On Interferon Lambda Signaling, John Evans
Influence Of Canonical And Non-Canonical Ifnlr1 Isoform Expression On Interferon Lambda Signaling, John Evans
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Interferon lambdas (IFNLs) are innate immune cytokines that induce antiviral cellular responses by signaling through a heterodimer composed of IL10RB and the interferon lambda receptor 1 (IFNLR1). Multiple IFNLR1 transcriptional variants are expressed in vivo and are predicted to encode distinct protein isoforms whose function is not fully established. IFNLR1 isoform 1 has the highest relative transcriptional expression and encodes the full-length functional form that supports canonical IFNL signaling. IFNLR1 isoforms 2 and 3 have lower relative expression and are predicted to encode signaling defective proteins. To gain insight into IFNLR1 function and regulation, we explored how altering relative expression …
