Component Separation: A Case Report Of Hybrid And Synthetic Absorbable Mesh Use For Complex Large Ventral Hernia Reparation., Harold Bafitis, Vania Arboleda, Isabel Bernal

HPD Articles

Ventral abdominal hernias are a common abdominal wall defect in the United States. We present a 50-year-old Caucasian male with a large (>18 cm) abdominal wall defect. An extensive complex abdominal wall reconstruction with advanced bilateral fascial flaps/component separation and repair of the abdominal wall defect was planned to restore the appropriate abdominal wall anatomic contour. The use of double mesh in large abdominal wall defects is still a relatively new documented technique. Only two case series detail the same technique used on this patient, with no articles on using a hybrid mesh with a synthetic absorbable mesh. This …

Cognitive Effects Of Grammatical Gender In L2 Spanish Acquisition: A Study Among Latter-Day Saint Returned Missionaries, Hannah Cagle

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The current study aims to explore the cognitive effects of L2 Spanish acquisition and the role that spending time in the target language country has on L2 learners’ categorization of inanimate objects. Three groups of participants were analyzed: monolingual English speakers, L2 Spanish speakers that learned their Spanish while serving missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) abroad, and L2 Spanish speakers that learned their Spanish while serving LDS missions in the United States. Using a Qualtrics survey, participants were tasked with pairing a list of adjectives stereotypically associated with males or females (Williams & Bennett, …

PURPOSE: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most prevalent form of lung cancer. Studies have evaluated the association of social determinants of health (SDH) with outcomes in early-stage NSCLC. These studies have shown statistically and clinically significant associations between overall survival (OS) and other SDH (e.g marital status, educational attainment). The aim of our study was to better understand the role of various SDH on OS in advanced-stage NSCLC patients in a community oncology practice in Florida. Methods: In this retrospective study, 125 patients with stage III and IV NSCLC were identified between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2018. …

Purpose: Prior studies of enhanced recovery protocols (ERP) have been conducted at large institutions with abundant resources. These results may not apply at institutions with less resources directed to quality improvement efforts. The purpose of this study was to assess the value of a minimalistic enhanced recovery protocol in reducing length of stay (LOS) following PSF for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. We hypothesized that accelerated transition to oral pain medications and mobilization alone could shorten hospital length of stay in the absence of a formal multimodal pain regimen. Methods: AIS patients aged 10–18 who underwent PSF at a tertiary pediatric hospital …

Genetic Control Of Rna Editing In Neurodegenerative Disease, Sijia Wu, Qiuping Xue, Mengyuan Yang, Yanfei Wang, Pora Kim, Xiaobo Zhou, Liyu Huang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

A-to-I RNA editing diversifies human transcriptome to confer its functional effects on the downstream genes or regulations, potentially involving in neurodegenerative pathogenesis. Its variabilities are attributed to multiple regulators, including the key factor of genetic variants. To comprehensively investigate the potentials of neurodegenerative disease-susceptibility variants from the view of A-to-I RNA editing, we analyzed matched genetic and transcriptomic data of 1596 samples across nine brain tissues and whole blood from two large consortiums, Accelerating Medicines Partnership-Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative. The large-scale and genome-wide identification of 95 198 RNA editing quantitative trait loci revealed the preferred genetic effects …

BACKGROUND: Variable results have been reported regarding the clinical outcomes in Total hip arthroplasty (THA) based on the surgical approach. The aim of this study is to compare the clinical outcomes between Direct anterior (DA) and direct lateral (DL) approaches in THA when performed immediately after fellowship training.

METHODS: During the 1st year of practice, all consecutive patients who underwent THA via DA and DL hip approaches were retrospectively investigated. Patients' demographics, diagnosis, American society of Anesthesiology (ASA) score, route of anesthesia, length of hospital stay (LOS), leg length discrepancy (LLD), radiographic parameters, operative time, number of opioids refills postoperatively, …
