Cellular Heterogeneity And Stem Cells Of Vascular Endothelial Cells In Blood Vessel Formation And Homeostasis: Insights From Single-Cell Rna Sequencing, Taku Wakabayashi, Hisamichi Naito

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Vascular endothelial cells (ECs) that constitute the inner surface of blood vessels are essential for new vessel formation and organ homeostasis. ECs display remarkable phenotypic heterogeneity across different organs and the vascular tree during angiogenesis and homeostasis. Recent advances in single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technologies have allowed a new understanding of EC heterogeneity in both mice and humans. In particular, scRNA-seq has identified new molecular signatures for arterial, venous and capillary ECs in different organs, as well as previously unrecognized specialized EC subtypes, such as the aerocytes localized in the alveolar capillaries of the lung. scRNA-seq has also revealed …

Rigor And Reliability Of Qualitative Research Conducted In Various Languages: Fundamentals And Their Application, Shweta Jain Verma Dr., Puja Gulati, Vishav Kumar Dhiman, Jeyaraj Durai Pandian Mar 2023

Rigor And Reliability Of Qualitative Research Conducted In Various Languages: Fundamentals And Their Application, Shweta Jain Verma Dr., Puja Gulati, Vishav Kumar Dhiman, Jeyaraj Durai Pandian

The Qualitative Report

Lack of a common language between researcher and participants, especially when participants speak different languages, complicates and makes the qualitative research process more difficult. Since language is the vehicle through which meaning is eventually communicated to the reader, interpretation and translation are essential to qualitative research. The researcher must adopt the principal tenets of cross language research to extrapolate the knowledge to all the spheres for a methodologically reliable and valid framework that is culturally sensitive in this situation. The purpose of the article is to acquaint qualitative researchers, including physician-researchers, with the fundamentals of qualitative study being carried out …

Despite the suppression of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication by combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), 50–60% of HIV-infected patients suffer from HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Studies are uncovering the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs), especially exosomes, in the central nervous system (CNS) due to HIV infection. We investigated links among circulating plasma exosomal (crExo) proteins and neuropathogenesis in simian/human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV)-infected rhesus macaques (RM) and HIV-infected and cART treated patients (Patient-Exo). Isolated EVs from SHIV-infected (SHIV-Exo) and uninfected (CTL-Exo) RM were predominantly exosomes (particle size < 150 nm). Proteomic analysis quantified 5654 proteins, of which 236 proteins (~4%) were significantly, differentially expressed (DE) between SHIV-/CTL-Exo. Interestingly, different CNS cell specific markers were abundantly expressed in crExo. Proteins involved in latent viral reactivation, neuroinflammation, neuropathology-associated interactive as well as signaling molecules were expressed at significantly higher levels in SHIV-Exo than CTL-Exo. However, proteins involved in mitochondrial biogenesis, ATP production, autophagy, endocytosis, exocytosis, and cytoskeleton organization were significantly less expressed in SHIV-Exo than CTL-Exo. Interestingly, proteins involved in oxidative stress, mitochondrial biogenesis, ATP production, and autophagy were significantly downregulated in primary human brain microvascular endothelial cells exposed with HIV+/cART+ Patient-Exo. We showed that Patient-Exo significantly increased blood–brain barrier permeability, possibly due to loss of platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 protein and actin cytoskeleton structure. Our novel findings suggest that circulating exosomal proteins expressed CNS cell markers—possibly associated with viral reactivation and neuropathogenesis—that may elucidate the etiology of HAND.

Enhancing Patient Experience Through Nurse Bundling Strategies, Ron C. Carpio Mar 2023

Enhancing Patient Experience Through Nurse Bundling Strategies, Ron C. Carpio

DNP and Student Works

Federal regulations have shifted healthcare systems to focus more on providing quality of care rather than quantity of care. Patient experiences that include nursing communication are important quality measures that have positive impact on satisfaction ratings. The project used nurse bundling strategies (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You [AIDET], purposeful/hourly rounding, and bedside shift report) guided by servant leadership principles to improve patients' experiences and overall hospital quality of care experiences. Pre and post education on the bundling approach and servant leadership theory and principles, registered nurses in the emergency department completed an electronic, 23-item Servant Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ) survey …

Comparing Self-Report Assessments And Scenario-Based Assessments Of Systems Thinking Competence, Kirsten A. Davis, Dustin Grote, Hesam Mahmoudi, Logan Perry, Navid Ghaffarzadegan, Jacob Grohs, Niyousha Hosseinichimeh, David B. Knight, Konstantinos Triantis

School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Self-report assessments are used frequently in higher education to assess a variety of constructs, including attitudes, opinions, knowledge, and competence. Systems thinking is an example of one competence often measured using self-report assessments where individuals answer several questions about their perceptions of their own skills, habits, or daily decisions. In this study, we define systems thinking as the ability to see the world as a complex interconnected system where different parts can influence each other, and the interrelationships determine system outcomes. An alternative, less-common, assessment approach is to measure skills directly by providing a scenario about an unstructured problem and …

Pcl And Dmso2 Composites For Bio-Scaffold Materials, Jae-Won Jang, Kyung-Eun Min, Cheolhee Kim, Chien Wern, Sung Yi

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Polycaprolactone (PCL) has been one of the most popular biomaterials in tissue engineering due to its relatively low melting temperature, excellent thermal stability, and cost-effectiveness. However, its low cell attraction, low elastic modulus, and long-term degradation time have limited its application in a wide range of scaffold studies. Dimethyl sulfone (DMSO2) is a stable and non-hazardous organosulfur compound with low viscosity and high surface tension. PCL and DMSO2 composites may overcome the limitations of PCL as a biomaterial and tailor the properties of biocomposites. In this study, PCL and DMSO2 composites were investigated as a new bio-scaffold material to increase …

Granite Staters Split On Parental Bill Of Rights; Housing Most Important Problem Facing State 3/21/2023, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

New Hampshire residents are divided in supporting proposed “Parental Bill of Rights” legislation. However, most Granite Staters agree with some rights included in the legislation, including the right for parents to consent to all medical treatments for their child, inspection of educational materials, and to know if their child identifies as a different name or gender at school. A slim plurality oppose a separate proposal to ban gender-affirmative care for minors in the state. One-third of Granite Staters say that housing is the most important problem facing the state, an all-time high. Chris Sununu is still viewed positively as governor.
