Amicus Briefs
Professors Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, David Gamage, Orly Mazur, Young Ran (Christine) Kim, and Darien Shanske (collectively, “Tax Law Professors”) write this amici curiae brief in support of the Appellant in COMPTROLLER OF MARYLAND v. COMCAST — the Maryland Digital Advertising Case.
Many digital transactions currently evade sales taxation in Maryland, even though the closest non-digital analogues are subject to tax. Specifically, digital advertising platforms like Respondents obtain vast quantities of individualized data from and on Marylanders in currently untaxed transactions. The scope and value of these transactions is vast and growing, as they allow advertising platforms the lucrative opportunity to …

Introduction. As many as 76.6% of patients aged 60 years and above (elderly) are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition based on MNA within the first 48 hours of hospital admission. The prevalence of malnutrition varies widely depending on the population studied, the healthcare setting and the tools used for the assessment. To date, SGA is widely used in the diagnosis of malnutrition for adults and MNA for elderly patients. Recently, experts proposed empirical consensus of GLIM criteria for determining the diagnosis of malnutrition in adults. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic performance of GLIM criteria as a …

Eosinophilic colitis is a very rare disease that can occur in the bimodal population (neonates and young adults) with a prevalence was 2.1/100,000 in overall population and 2.3/100,000 in adults. However, only about 0.1% of cases were diagnosed from biopsy results obtained during colonoscopy. The lack of precise histological criteria for the quantity of eosinophils in the colon mucosa creates a distinct challenge in diagnosing eosinophilic colitis. Eosinophilia in the gastrointestinal tract can be mediated by IgE and non-IgE, but non-IgE tends to be dominant in adults. This report discusses about a case of a 64-year-old male with bloody diarrhea …

Introduction. Nosocomial pneumonia is a lung infection that occurs after the patient is hospitalized for more than 48 hours, without any signs of pulmonary infection at the time of treatment. When compared with young individuals, elderly individuals are more likely to have community-sourced and nosocomial infections with worse outcomes. Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) domains are expected to explain the factors that contribute to nosocomial pneumonia in elderly patients. This study aimed to determine the proportion of elderly treated at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Central General Hospital who experienced nosocomial pneumonia and whether the CGA domains influence the occurrence of nosocomial …

Health workers (HCWs) are prone to get infected by HIV infection when carrying out their duties. The injuries can be caused by needle sticks, sharp objects (scalpels, lancets, or other) that have been exposed to body fluids or splashes of body fluids onto the body’s mucosa (eyes, nose, mouth) and non-intact skin have the potential to transmit the HIV infection. Post-exposure transmission due to contamination of body fluids to health workers can be prevented by providing post-exposure prophylaxis therapy. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is given as soon as possible and no later than 72 hours after exposure. Prophylaxis is given to …

Influenza is known to worsen cardiovascular events in patients with a history of coronary heart disease. However, the effectiveness of influenza vaccination in reducing hospitalization due to cardiovascular disease is not clearly known. We aim to determine the effect of influenza vaccination on hospitalization rates due to cardiovascular disease in patients with a history of coronary heart disease. Relevant literature was searched on four electronic databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and Cochrane Library, using predetermined keywords. Critical review of the studies was done using the Center of Evidence Based Medicine (CEBM) University of Oxford assessment tool. The search yielded six articles, …

The new capabilities that JWST offers in the near- and mid-infrared (IR) are used to investigate in unprecedented detail the nature of optical/near-IR-faint, mid-IR-bright sources, with HST-dark galaxies among them. We gather JWST data from the CEERS survey in the Extended Groth Strip, jointly with HST data, and analyze spatially resolved optical-to-mid-IR spectral energy distributions to estimate photometric redshifts in two dimensions and stellar population properties on a pixel-by-pixel basis for red galaxies detected by NIRCam. We select 138 galaxies with F150W − F356W > 1.5 mag and F356W < 27.5 mag. The nature of these sources is threefold: (1) 71% are dusty star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 2 < z < 6 with 9 < log M ⋆ / M ⊙ < 11 and a variety of specific SFRs (<1 to >100 Gyr−1); (2) 18% are quiescent/dormant (i.e., subject to reignition/rejuvenation) …

Substance Use Disorders And The Behavioral Effects Of Novel And Existing Compounds, Sarah Uribe
Theses and Dissertations
These investigations aimed to study the effects of experimental compounds for use in treating and preventing substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorder (OUD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Identifying and testing potential medications for these two diseases is critical since current FDA-approved medications are only modestly effective, and addiction continues to spread. We previously demonstrated that co-administration of morphine and MP-III-024 produced synergistic effects in hot plate and von Frey assays. This study evaluated whether MP-III-024 also produced synergistic effects in behavioral tests sensitive to the side effects of morphine. Our findings suggest that co-administration of morphine and MP-III-024 …

The Snowmass 2021 CompF4 topical group’s scope is facilities R&D, where we consider “facilities” as the hardware and software infrastructure inside the data centers plus the networking between data centers, irrespective of who owns them, and what policies are applied for using them. In other words, it includes commercial clouds, federally funded High Performance Computing (HPC) systems for all of science, and systems funded explicitly for a given experimental or theoretical program. However, we explicitly consider any data centers that are integrated into data acquisition systems or trigger of the experiments out of scope here. Those systems tend to have …
