INTRODUCTION: Many in the U.S. are not up to date with cancer screening. This systematic review examined the effectiveness of interventions engaging community health workers to increase breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening.

METHODS: Authors identified relevant publications from previous Community Guide systematic reviews of interventions to increase cancer screening (1966 through 2013) and from an update search (January 2014-November 2021). Studies written in English and published in peer-reviewed journals were included if they assessed interventions implemented in high-income countries; reported screening for breast, cervical, or colorectal cancer; and engaged community health workers to implement part or all of the …

Differences In American Adolescent Sport Participation During The Covid-19 Pandemic By Learning Mode: A National Survey, Ashleigh M Johnson, Gregory Knell, Timothy J Walker, Emily Kroshus

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

This study aimed to examine the relation between learning mode with sport participation and compare participation prevalence in different settings by learning mode among United States adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional, national survey was conducted by a market research company (December 2021-January 2022) among parents whose child participated in sports pre-pandemic. Parents were asked about their child's learning mode (in-person, online, hybrid); sports participation (yes/no) during the pandemic; and participation setting (school, community, club/elite). Weighted logistic regression models examined the relation between learning mode with sport participation. Weighted prevalence estimates of participation setting were compared by learning mode. …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is a common cause of morbimortality, and a frequent reason for admission to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). It requires a high-flow oxygen device as treatment. Our aim is to determine the frequency and main indications for the use of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), and the prevalence of HFNC failure and its main causes, in three hospitals.

METHODS: It is a multicenter prospective cohort study, developed in three hospitals in Bogota. Eligible patients were children older than 1 month and younger than 18 years who presented ARF and required management with an …

Are Human Papillomavirus Knowledge And Vaccine Uptake Associated With Hiv Status And Social Determinants Of Health In Young Sexual Minority Men?, Trisha L Amboree, Alan G Nyitray, John Schneider, Nick Gargurevich, Jacky Kuo, Elizabeth Y Chiao, Lu-Yu Hwang, Kayo Fujimoto

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

This brief report examines the relationship, if any, between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status, and individual-level and socio-sexual partner-level factors of social determinants of health (SDOH) that are associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) knowledge and vaccine uptake in young sexual minority men (YSMM). We used data from 126 YSMM recruited by network-based sampling during 2015-2016 in Houston, Texas. Descriptive statistics and regression analyses were conducted to test the association between HIV status, SDOH, and HPV knowledge and vaccine uptake. Those living with HIV had lower odds of knowledge of HPV-associated anal cancer (OR: 0.43, 95% CI: 0.18-0.97) and knowledge of …

Effects Of A School-Based Garden Program On Academic Performance: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial, Jaimie N Davis, Katie Nikah, Matthew J Landry, Sarvenaz Vandyousefi, Reem Ghaddar, Matthew Jeans, Michele Hockett Cooper, Bonnie Martin, Lyndsey Waugh, Shreela V Sharma, Alexandra E Van Den Berg Apr 2023

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: School gardening programs have consistently been found to improve dietary behaviors in children. Although several quasi-experimental studies have also reported that school gardens can enhance academic performance, to date, no randomized controlled trial has been conducted to substantiate this.

Objective: The objective of the study was to examine the effects of Texas Sprouts (TX Sprouts), a gardening, nutrition, and cooking program vs control on academic performance in primarily low-income, Hispanic children.

Design: This is a secondary analysis of the grade-level academic scores from schools that participated in the TX Sprouts program, a school-based cluster randomized controlled trial, consisting of …

Potentiation Of The Immune Checkpoint Blockade Response By Metabolic Modulation Is Predictable Using Molecular Imaging, Renee L. Chin Apr 2023

Potentiation Of The Immune Checkpoint Blockade Response By Metabolic Modulation Is Predictable Using Molecular Imaging, Renee L. Chin

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Unregulated cell division is a hallmark of cancer. The high metabolic needs of the tumor cells result in nutrient depletion and produce a hostile tumor microenvironment (TME) for antitumor immune cells, protecting the tumor from immune cell-mediated control and immunotherapy. Two of these environmental factors, acidosis and hypoxia, are commonly found in solid cancers. In my thesis, I posited that modulation of tumor acidosis and hypoxia can serve as biomarkers by indicating immunogenicity and tumor sensitivity to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) as monitored using molecular imaging. Esomeprazole was found to promote tumor immunogenicity and induce tumor control when used to …

Associations Between Perceived Racial Discrimination, Racial Residential Segregation, And Cancer Screening Adherence Among Low-Income African Americans: A Multilevel, Cross-Sectional Analysis, Lynn N Ibekwe, Maria Eugenia Fernández-Esquer, Sandi L Pruitt, Nalini Ranjit, Maria E Fernández Apr 2023

Associations Between Perceived Racial Discrimination, Racial Residential Segregation, And Cancer Screening Adherence Among Low-Income African Americans: A Multilevel, Cross-Sectional Analysis, Lynn N Ibekwe, Maria Eugenia Fernández-Esquer, Sandi L Pruitt, Nalini Ranjit, Maria E Fernández

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

OBJECTIVES: African Americans suffer disproportionately from cancer compared to their White counterparts. Racism may be an important determinant, but the literature on its association with cancer screening is limited. We examine associations between racism and cancer screening among a sample of African Americans.

DESIGN: Guided by the Public Health Critical Race Praxis and the Behavioral Model of Health Services Use, we conducted a multilevel, cross-sectional study using cancer risk assessment data collected from 405 callers to the 2-1-1 Texas helpline. We merged these data with contextual data from the U.S. Census Bureau. We assessed perceived racial discrimination using the Experiences …
