Analysis Of Thyroid Function Abnormalities Induced By Pembrolizumab In Patients With Advanced Malignancies, Moez Mobarek, Ibrahim Al-Shamary, Mazin Ibrahim

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

Pembrolizumab is an effective anticancer immunotherapy. It is generally well tolerated although immune-related adverse events can occur. Autoimmune thyroid dysfunction is the most common one among these events. Several evidences suggested that pembrolizumab can induce thyroid dysfunction after several treatment cycles. The aim of the study is to evaluate the incidence and risk factors of thyroid function abnormalities related to pembrolizumab therapy. This is a multicenter prospective study including 100 patients with different cancers who initiated pembrolizumab treatment. Demographic data was collected in addition to the number of treatment cycles, history of thyroid surgery, thyroid disease, chemotherapy and steroid treatment. Baseline …

METHODS: Using the individual-level patient data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, we constructed a case-control study of veterans living with HIV/AIDS (VLWH) and age-, sex assigned at birth- and index date-matched controls. Evaluation Of The Effect Of Varicoceles On Testicular Stiffness By Shear Wave Elastography, Raad Abedtwfeq, Aws Khudhur

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT:BACKGROUND: Varicocele is a disease characterized by abnormally engorged veins of the pampiniform plexus.                     The prevalence of varicocele is approximately 15% in adult males. Multiple classification systems are available for grading varicoceles, all of them are non-ideal. Ultrasound elastography (USE) is a new imaging technology that examines tissue stiffness. Elasticity imaging by USE provides stiffness measurement as additional information to conventional US.AIM OF THE STUDY: Is to examine changes in testicular stiffness in varicocele in an attempt to assess the role of Shear wave elastography in testicular varicoceles and to provide additional diagnostic data to further improve and unify a …

Do We Need Sub Specialization In Medicine?, Hadi Al Khalili

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

Over the recent decades, we have seen an explosion in scientific knowledge, and medical technology has made it difficult for individuals to keep up with the current advancement.  This explosion has established the need for sub specialization.  Historically, the practice of medicine went through historical phases. In Mesopotamia, there were two types of doctors: Asu, the scientific doctor, and Asipu, the temple healer. Both were treating people, dentists, and veterinarians.(1) Egyptian medicine was as advanced with some specialization.(2)

Taxane-induce peripheral nerve damage can lead motor and sensory symptoms. Initial detection of peripheral neuropathy simplifies complete …

Transmountain Diversion In The Forest Wilderness: Natural History Is Human History, José A. Rivera Ph.D Apr 2023

Transmountain Diversion In The Forest Wilderness: Natural History Is Human History, José A. Rivera Ph.D

Faculty Publications

The case study details how an adjudication involving the water rights of Indigenous pueblos downstream of rights held by Hispano irrigators led to a prolonged conflict not with the pueblos but between Cuba valley farmers and the United States Forest Service. It happened that an adjudication decree in federal court mandated the Nacimiento Community Ditch Association to replace its diversion located in a wilderness forest with a modern structure to partition water equitably among all users on the Jémez River. The transmountain diversion, as it was called, took water out of the Jémez basin and dropped it to a canyon …

The Zanjeras Of Ilocos In The Northern Philippines: A Legacy Of Sustainable Resource Management, José A. Rivera Ph.D Apr 2023

The Zanjeras Of Ilocos In The Northern Philippines: A Legacy Of Sustainable Resource Management, José A. Rivera Ph.D

Faculty Publications

Zanjeras are farmer-managed irrigation systems that have endured for centuries in the Ilocos region of northern Luzon in the Philippines. These cooperative irrigation societies emerged during the Spanish regime when Augustinians were deployed to congregate indigenous populations into pueblos, convert them to Christianity, and raise tributes for the Crown. Zanjeras evolved from a blending of two traditions: the Iberian model of irrigation and indigenized practices of water-for-land exchanges with landowners and atar-holdings to distribute shares among the members. Like other community-based irrigation systems in Southeast Asia and globally, zanjeras are self-governed, long-enduring, and serve as exemplary models of …

Effects Of Habitat Management On Rodent Diversity, Abundance, And Virus Infection Dynamics, Nathaniel Mull, Amy Schexnayder, Abigail Stolt, Tarja Sironen, Kristian M. Forbes

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

As anthropogenic factors continue to degrade natural areas, habitat management is needed to restore and maintain biodiversity. However, the impacts of different habitat management regimes on ecosystems have largely focused on vegetation analyses, with limited evaluation of downstream effects on wildlife. We compared the effects of grassland management regimes (prescribed burning, cutting/haying, or no active management) on rodent communities and the viruses they hosted. Rodents were trapped in 13 existing grassland sites in Northwest Arkansas, USA during 2020 and 2021. Rodent blood samples were screened for antibodies against three common rodent-borne virus groups: orthohantaviruses, arenaviruses, and orthopoxviruses. We captured 616 …

Can Changing Neighborhoods Influence Mental Health? An Ecological Analysis Of Gentrification And Neighborhood-Level Serious Psychological Distress—New York City, 2002–2015, Karen A. Alroy, Haleigh Cavalier, Aldo Crossa, Shu Meir Wang, Sze Yan Liu, Christina Norman, Michael Sanderson, L. Hannah Gould, Sung Woo Lim

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Neighborhood conditions influence people’s health; sustaining healthy neighborhoods is a New York City (NYC) Health Department priority. Gentrification is characterized by rapid development in historically disinvested neighborhoods. The gentrification burden, including increased living expenses, and disrupted social networks, disproportionally impacts certain residents. To ultimately target health promotion interventions, we examined serious psychological distress time trends in gentrifying NYC neighborhoods to describe the association of gentrification and mental health overall and stratified by race and ethnicity. We categorized NYC neighborhoods as hypergentrifying, gentrifying, and not-gentrifying using a modified New York University Furman Center index. Neighborhoods with ≥100% rent growth were hypergentrifying; …

On The Same Team: Technical Services And Student Success Tackle Textbook Affordability, Mallory Jallas, Julie A. Murphy, Rachel Park, Rachel E. Scott, Anne Shelley

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, student textbook access and affordability have emerged as areas of focus for academic libraries to support student success. Librarians across departments at a public four-year institution developed a program to leverage campus information about textbook selection to inform library e-book purchases. The resulting eTextbook collection became an invaluable resource for students during the pandemic and created a direct connection between the work of Technical Services and Student Success. This presentation provides an overview of the project, discusses assessment elements, and highlights the vital aspects of collaboration within an academic library for student success.
