Viscous Thin-Film Models Of Nanoscale Self-Organization Under Ion Bombardment, Tyler Evans Apr 2023

Viscous Thin-Film Models Of Nanoscale Self-Organization Under Ion Bombardment, Tyler Evans

Mathematics Theses and Dissertations

For decades, it has been observed that broad-beam irradiation of semiconductor surfaces can lead to spontaneous self-organization into highly regular patterns, sometimes at length scales of only a few nanometers. Initial theory was largely based on erosion and redistribution of material occurring on fast time scales, which are able to produce good agreement with certain aspects of surface evolution. However, further experimental and theoretical work eventually led to the realization that numerous effects are active in the irradiated target, including stresses associated with ion-implantation and the accumulation of damage leading to the development of a disordered, amorphous layer atop the …

Practical Implementation Of The Immersed Interface Method With Triangular Meshes For 3d Rigid Solids In A Fluid Flow, Norah Hakami Apr 2023

Practical Implementation Of The Immersed Interface Method With Triangular Meshes For 3d Rigid Solids In A Fluid Flow, Norah Hakami

Mathematics Theses and Dissertations

When employing the immersed interface method (IIM) to simulate a fluid flow around a moving rigid object, the immersed object can be replaced by a virtual fluid enclosed by singular forces on the interface between the real and virtual fluids. These forces represent the impact of the rigid motion on the fluid flow and cause jump discontinuities across the interface in the whole flow field. Then, the IIM resolves the fluid flow on a fixed computational domain by directly incorporating the jump conditions across the interface into numerical schemes. Previous development of the method is limited to simple smooth boundaries. …

Marine Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Landscape transcriptomics is an emerging field studying how genome-wide expression patterns reflect dynamic landscape-scale environmental drivers, including habitat, weather, climate, and contaminants, and the subsequent effects on organismal function. This field is benefitting from advancing and increasingly accessible molecular technologies, which in turn are allowing the necessary characterization of transcriptomes from wild individuals distributed across natural landscapes. This research is especially important given the rapid pace of anthropogenic environmental change and potential impacts that span levels of biological organization. We discuss three major themes in landscape transcriptomic research: connecting transcriptome variation across landscapes to environmental variation, generating and testing hypotheses …

There's Still A Reason To Lace 'Em Up, Ryan Anderson Apr 2023

There's Still A Reason To Lace 'Em Up, Ryan Anderson

HCOM 434: Creative Publishing and Critical Storytelling, Spring 2023

This piece started from a brainstorm around the question: "What items did I hold on to in times of uncertainty?" For me, the answer was my basketball shoes. During the pandemic, playing basketball was my only remaining tie to the outside world. It helped me cope and continue to feel connected to the world that had all but disappeared.

Tales Of Uncertainty Told By Grief And Forgiveness, Jesika Gaston Apr 2023

Tales Of Uncertainty Told By Grief And Forgiveness, Jesika Gaston

HCOM 434: Creative Publishing and Critical Storytelling, Spring 2023

This is a collection of poems taking account of my experiences with grieving my father and dealing with not having reconciled with him beforehand. Grief can be tricky and sticky with any situation: relationships, periods of our lives, a person we used to be, death, etc. Though it looks different for everyone, no one size fits all or this or that. And it sure isn’t linear and that’s okay :)

Pink Platforms, Alyssa Phillips Apr 2023

Pink Platforms, Alyssa Phillips

HCOM 434: Creative Publishing and Critical Storytelling, Spring 2023

This piece represents finding pride in femininity. Too often little girls are told that being feminine is synonymous with being weak, and not being taken seriously. Pink is usually seen as a color of softness, but in this piece I wanted to use a vibrant, hot pink that is not soft to the eyes in the slightest. I also wanted to use the subject matter of platform heeled boots, because platforms make me feel far more empowered than a simple pair of stilettos, which men seem to prefer. This piece is about learning to not only embrace the power and …

Improving Species Distribution Models Of Continental Shelf Fishes Off California, Kinsey Matthews Apr 2023

Improving Species Distribution Models Of Continental Shelf Fishes Off California, Kinsey Matthews

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Species distribution models (SDMs) relate species occurrences, or abundances, with oceanographic or bathymetric data to predict species distributions. SDMs are used to forecast the effects of climate change on species distributions, evaluate existing protected areas and identify locations for future protected areas, estimate the effects of invasive species on a community, and determine how community assemblages change spatially or temporally. Articles describing marine SDMs are becoming increasingly common in the scientific literature; however, their efficacy for predicting the distribution and relative abundance of continental shelf fishes off California is not universally accepted. SDM performance can be affected by the inclusion …

Optimizing Cybersecurity Risk In Medical Cyber-Physical Devices, Christopher S. Yoo, Bethany C. Lee Apr 2023

Optimizing Cybersecurity Risk In Medical Cyber-Physical Devices, Christopher S. Yoo, Bethany C. Lee

William & Mary Law Review

Medical devices are increasingly connected, both to cyber networks and to sensors collecting data from physical stimuli. These cyber-physical systems pose a new host of deadly security risks that traditional notions of cybersecurity struggle to take into account. Previously, we could predict how algorithms would function as they drew on defined inputs. But cyber-physical systems draw on unbounded inputs from the real world. Moreover, with wide networks of cyber-physical medical devices, a single cybersecurity breach could pose lethal dangers to masses of patients.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is tasked with regulating medical devices to ensure safety and …

Promoting Healing And Avoiding Retraumatization: A Proposal To Improve Mental Health Care For Detained Unaccompanied Minors Through A Best Interests Of The Child Standard, Francesca J. Babetski

William & Mary Law Review

Part I of this Note will describe the circuit split. It will provide background on the A.M. [A.M. v. Luzerne County Juvenile Detention Center] and Doe 4 cases, including an explanation of the major precedents on which the Third and Fourth Circuits based their respective decisions. Then, Part II will argue that A.M. and its deliberate indifference standard cannot appropriately be applied in cases involving detained unaccompanied minors, also called Unaccompanied Alien Children (UACs). This almost twenty-year-old standard does not consider the latest information about immigration policy and the unique mental health needs of UACs such as Doe …

Exploring Protein Conformations And Functions Through Molecular Dynamics Simulations And Machine Learning, Hao Tian

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

Proteins are essential biomacromolecules that perform a variety of critical functions in living organisms. The tertiary structure of a protein plays a crucial role in its biological activity as it determines how the protein interacts with other molecules. Consequently, understanding protein conformation and function is an important area of research with implications in medicine, biotechnology, and other fields.

The first part of this dissertation focuses on protein allostery, a process by which proteins transmit perturbations caused by binding at one site to a distal site, thereby regulating activity. With the development of computational methods like molecular dynamics simulations and machine …

Lex Patrimonium

A limited liability company as a legal entity adheres to the principle of a separate legal entity which creates the concept of limited liability of its shareholders. The existence of these two concepts automatically separates the assets of the limited liability company from the personal assets of its shareholders. Even though the shareholders are part owners of the limited liability company, the shareholders cannot claim the assets of the limited liability company. Shares acquired while in marital status can become joint property. However, the Indonesian Marriage Law does not provide special arrangements or mechanisms regarding the distribution of joint assets, …

Female Perpetrators Of Ritually Motivated Pedicide And Mutilation Of Children, Chima Agazue

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

Ritually motivated pedicide is among contemporary Africa’s most severe crimes against children. Most of these crimes involve brutal acts of violence or mutilation of the victim. While men are most often the perpetrators of violent crimes, ritually motivated pedicide and mutilation equally attract women. The role of women in these crimes is not restricted to the less violent aspects of the crimes; instead, they also extend to the most brutal elements, often involving mutilation, decapitation or outright murder of the victim. This article explored the involvement of women in these crimes that target children for mutilation and pedicide. The article …

Blind As A Bat: Acoustic Differences Within A Bat Swarm Soundscape Based On Location, Keegan Eveland Apr 2023

Blind As A Bat: Acoustic Differences Within A Bat Swarm Soundscape Based On Location, Keegan Eveland

Inquiry Journal Spring 2023

In the fall of 2022, I participated in an independent research project under the mentorship of Dr.Kloepper in the Ecological Acoustics and Behavior lab. I decided to delve into a project that shed light on an underrepresented animal, bats. Bats are proficient at producing echolocation pulses that they utilize to their advantage to hunt and navigate cluttered areas. I investigated how Tadarida brasiliensis (the Brazilian free-tailed bat), that lives in colonies of thousands, may shift their echolocation so they can distinguish their own calls from the cacophony of sound when flying all together. A trained Harris’s hawk carried a microphone/camera …

Breaking The Cycle: Using Autoethnography To Reframe The Narrative Of Parental Divorce And Romantic Relationships—Reversing The Curse, Taylor Harper

Inquiry Journal Spring 2023

Humans are innate storytellers, and the way we interpret and tell stories about our experiences provides the framework for perceptions of ourselves and the world around us. For me, experiencing my parent’s high-conflict divorce throughout my adolescence and young adulthood constructed a negative perception of marriage and romantic relationships, one that I wanted to abandon as I began to build a relationship with my own romantic partner as an adult. In spring 2022, I was presented with an opportunity in a communication arts capstone course to explore my experience through autoethnography, a methodical approach to research and writing through personal …

Engineering Analysis Of Siege Engines In The First Crusade, Ian Lindberg Apr 2023

Engineering Analysis Of Siege Engines In The First Crusade, Ian Lindberg

Inquiry Journal Spring 2023

The First Crusade was a critically important period in European and Middle Eastern history, and in nearly a millennium since its conclusion, many have sought to understand the military campaign that formed the heart of the Crusade. Crucial to understanding this campaign that saw the Crusaders defeat the Muslim forces in the Levant is understanding the sieges which made up the majority of decisive engagements. Previous analyses on these sieges have been missing an important component: an accurate understanding of the siege engines that the Crusaders successfully used to turn the sieges in their favor. During the summer of 2022, …

The Musical Touch On Mental Illness, Skylar Dunn

Senior Honors Theses

To understand the relationship amongst anxiety, depression, and music therapy, this integrative review synthesizes the major themes and relevant education of articles discussing mental health and the benefit of music. While most existing studies focus on using music therapy to treat pain and clinical anxiety, the content of this paper is written to emphasize how the same principles can be used in unmanageable stress and emotional decomposition. Each topic is analyzed and reviewed individually, pooling several sources for a thorough examination, and understanding of the subject. Once each area is fully summarized, the gap is addressed by pulling evidence from …

Sherwood Anderson And The Industrial Corruption Of Midwestern Individualism, Hudson Rice Apr 2023

Sherwood Anderson And The Industrial Corruption Of Midwestern Individualism, Hudson Rice

Senior Honors Theses

Sherwood Anderson’s literary Midwest reflects many of the idealistic characteristics resulting from the region’s frontier, agrarian origin. The most prominent of these characteristics is the region’s emphasis on and appreciation of human particularity. His novels Winesburg, Ohio and Poor White document the region’s unique relationship with individual particularity and how this particularity clashed with a new industrial lifestyle. The two novels reflect the Midwest’s unique understanding of individuality and offer an explanation for why the region’s response to an industrial cultural overhaul was so damaging for the Midwest’s identity, as the traditional identity was supplanted by an industrial one.
