The Effects Of Financial Literacy Of Low-Income Females On Their Long-Term Financial Behaviors, Ryan Fahey
The Effects Of Financial Literacy Of Low-Income Females On Their Long-Term Financial Behaviors, Ryan Fahey
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
This study uses data from FINRA’s 2021 National Financial Capability Study to compare financial literacy with long-term financial behaviors; and compare financial literacy by gender and income. Questions from the study were used to create scores in both financial literacy and financial behaviors. We emphasize the importance of financial literacy as those who scored higher on the financial literacy quiz were shown to have superior financial behaviors. We also found significant differences in financial literacy scores with women and low-income individuals scoring lower than men. This study highlights the need to encourage girls and women and improve education in personal …
The Impact Of Movies On Investor Attitudes And Investment Decisions, Sarah Daniels
The Impact Of Movies On Investor Attitudes And Investment Decisions, Sarah Daniels
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
Movies have been shown to have an affect on individuals’ attitudes and behaviors, and behavioral finance principles have supported that individuals make investment decisions based on factors beyond numbers and data. The connection specifically between movies and investors’ attitudes and investment decisions remained unexplored. I conducted a survey asking participants about their investment attitudes and investment behaviors relating to six specific movies and corresponding companies/industries to compare if there was a difference in the responses of individuals who had seen a clip of each given movie and those who had not. After statistically analyzing the responses, three of the six …
An Analysis Of A Rolling Buy-Write Derivative Strategy On Market Index Etfs, Daniel T. Kelly
An Analysis Of A Rolling Buy-Write Derivative Strategy On Market Index Etfs, Daniel T. Kelly
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
In this paper, I explore a trading strategy referred to as the buy-write strategy. Rational investors are always looking for a way to outperform their benchmarks, and using a trading strategy with options could potentially allow an investor to do this. In 2002, when the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) created the first buy-write index, it sparked an interest from Professor Robert Whaley of Vanderbilt. Whaley backtested the strategy from 1989 to 2002 and found that the buy-write strategy with calls placed at-the-money had almost exactly the same return at two-thirds the standard deviation. In my research I apply the …
The Sustained American Dream: An Examination Of Fhlb-Acquired Mortgages’ Economic Demographic Variation Across Geographic Regions, Grace Oakey
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
The report embarks on a deeper analysis of American regional variation in economic dimensions’ connection with the use and amount of mortgage debt by inhabitants of those regions, specifically with regards to the middle- and low-income household mortgage debt purchased by the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB). Part of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the FHLB system supports mortgage lending and other community investment through its eleven district banks; the mortgage investment it facilitates includes advances made to more than 6,500 member financial institutions as well as 63,890 mortgages purchased collectively in 2021. From the review of prior research, adjacencies …
A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Sec’S Environmental Disclosure Proposal And Its Effect On Businesses, Auditors, And Shareholders, Sarah Gloria
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis examines the challenges and implications of the proposed SEC rule requiring firms to report their greenhouse gas emissions across all supply chain levels, a response to increasing stakeholder demands for transparency in environmental impact. The rule, which aligns with the TCFD framework, aims to enhance transparency, comparability, and consistency in emission reporting but has faced significant criticism, particularly regarding the practicality of its implementation. Through a conceptual report and cost-benefit analysis, this research assesses the rule's feasibility, highlighting the substantial costs involved in data collection and reporting, especially for Scope 3 emissions, which are difficult and costly to …
How Social Vs. Environmental Initiatives Motivate Consumer Perception, Daven Roberts
How Social Vs. Environmental Initiatives Motivate Consumer Perception, Daven Roberts
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
The research presented below aims to answer the following question: How does consumer-centric (or non-consumer-centric) focused messaging motivate positive consumer attitudes towards the brand and the product, and, specifically, how does this differ between the social and environmental sectors of ESG? Based on prior research, it was hypothesized that the most persuasive manipulation of consumer brand perception and interaction would be consumer-centric environmental initiatives and non-consumer-centric social initiatives. What was observed was the direct opposite effect. Though an insignificant variation in consumer brand interaction was observed across the study, consumer brand perception was most motivated by non-consumer-centric environmental initiatives and …

The Financial Repercussions Of A Sexual Harassment Allegation, Yajunaida Torrealba
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
The popularization of the #MeToo movement in 2018 has brought the widespread issue of sexual assault to the forefront of the minds of the public. As accusations of sexual assault are released against high-level executives at some of the world's largest companies, one can wonder if the public condemnation of these actions is extended to investors and their decisions. This paper aims to discover if companies sustain a financial loss when accusation against an executive at a company is made public. The observed company was compared to a comparable company of a similar industry and observed for any changes in …
Greenwashing Vs. Fact-Based Sustainability Ratings: Which Do Consumers Prefer?, James Groenier
Greenwashing Vs. Fact-Based Sustainability Ratings: Which Do Consumers Prefer?, James Groenier
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
As ESG-related initiatives continue to make sweeping changes to the business world, and as consumers are looking for ways to reduce their environmental footprint, companies are under more pressure than ever to meet these demands and operate more sustainably. A large piece of doing so is communicating sustainability efforts to consumers in order to maintain a favorable image in the eyes of those who want to see companies make an environmentally-conscious effort to do their part. However, as a result of this consumer demand, what has also emerged is a form of marketing communication called “greenwashing”. Depending on the criteria …
The Impact Of Values And Personality On A Novel Employee Benefits Model For Gen Z, Maya Bentovim
The Impact Of Values And Personality On A Novel Employee Benefits Model For Gen Z, Maya Bentovim
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
This study examines Generation Z’s (born between 1997-2012) desired workplace benefits, focusing on the relationship between generational unit personality and value attributes and benefits. Previous research suggests that employee benefits drive recruitment and retention, and that strategic human capital management can lead to a competitive advantage. By incorporating generational cohort and person-organization fit theories, this study develops a fundamental understanding of how Generation Z’s personality and values can influence organizational attractiveness by through tailored benefits packages. In study one, 504 undergraduate students at a higher education institution in the Northeastern United States were surveyed on their values, personality, and desired …
The Impact Of Social Media Influencers On Corporate Brand Equity, Melissa George
The Impact Of Social Media Influencers On Corporate Brand Equity, Melissa George
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
The rise of social media has created a new channel of digital marketing in the form of social media influencers. As endorsers of brands, products, and services, social media influencers wield a unique power to sway social media users in their purchasing behavior. However, the financial impact of influencers has not yet been fully established in previous studies. Efficiency and cost of marketing activities will influence which channels marketers choose to employ. So, establishing that there is a possible return on investment of social influencer marketing is crucial as today’s marketplace and economy trend towards the digital world. This paper, …
The Impact Of Investor Sentiment On Crypto Pump And Dump Activity, Andrea Yi
The Impact Of Investor Sentiment On Crypto Pump And Dump Activity, Andrea Yi
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
With the popularization of objectively risky investments like meme stocks and crypto pump-and-dump schemes, it’s important to explore the underlying motivations of why investors participate in these investments. Previous research has shown that individualistic characteristics like overconfidence and gambling preferences move investors to participate in pump-and-dump schemes (Dhawan & Putnins, 2021), but is there a more macro factor that can determine this likelihood? This thesis examines the relationship between investor sentiment and the frequency of crypto pump-and-dump schemes using regression analysis controlling for factors like SP500 price, crypto popularity, and changes in regulation. The findings suggest that higher investor sentiment …
Power Law Modeling Of Investor Purchases, Alyssia Schelfaut
Power Law Modeling Of Investor Purchases, Alyssia Schelfaut
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
The empirical part of this thesis determines if returns and trading volumes of some popular publicly traded stocks (e.g., Disney) follow a power law (and if yes, to what degree). Gabaix (2016)1 formally defined a power law as a relation of Y = aXβ. In this context, X and Y are the variables of interest, whilst the variable β is the power-law exponent. The theoretical part of this thesis will calibrate a theoretical heterogeneous agent model to potentially explain this behaviour. Explaining this behaviour can lead to understanding market fluctuations and determining macroeconomic policies, which in turn will help to …

Projections of Antarctica's contribution to future sea level rise are associated with significant uncertainty, in part because the observational record is too short to capture long-term processes necessary to estimate ice mass changes over societally relevant timescales. Records of grounding line retreat from the geologic past offer an opportunity to extend our observations of these processes beyond the modern record and to gain a more comprehensive understanding of ice-sheet change. Here, we present constraints on the timing and inland extent of deglacial grounding line retreat in the southern Ross Sea, Antarctica, obtained via direct sampling of a subglacial lake located …
Property And The Right To Enter, Bethany R. Berger
Property And The Right To Enter, Bethany R. Berger
Washington and Lee Law Review
On June 23, 2021, the Supreme Court decided Cedar Point Nursery v. Hassid, holding that laws that authorize entry to land are takings without regard to duration, impact, or the public interest. The decision runs roughshod over precedent, but it does something more. It undermines the important place of rights to enter in preserving the virtues of property itself. This Article examines rights to enter as a matter of theory, tradition, and constitutional law, arguing that the law has always recognized their essential role. Throughout history, moreover, expansions of legal exclusion have often reflected unjust domination antithetical to property norms. …
Learning From Mistakes, Irene Oritseweyinmi Joe
Learning From Mistakes, Irene Oritseweyinmi Joe
Washington and Lee Law Review
Much of the attention following the reversal of a defendant’s wrongful conviction focuses on the role the police or the prosecutor played in perpetuating the injustice. To the extent that the public defender institution’s role is considered, it is often limited to its failure to provide effective assistance of counsel. This Article challenges the conventional wisdom that the public defender institution’s role in addressing a wrongful conviction is limited to ineffective assistance of counsel claims and ends once a wrongful conviction is reversed. At minimum, the legal profession’s mandate for competent representation requires public defenders, and the institutions that house …
Abortion, The Underground Railroad, And Evidentiary Privilege, Tom Lininger
Abortion, The Underground Railroad, And Evidentiary Privilege, Tom Lininger
Washington and Lee Law Review
Building on my recent article in the Minnesota Law Review proposing reforms of evidentiary privilege law, this Article focuses on the unique context of communication about abortion. There is an urgent need to protect such communication in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which allowed states to recriminalize abortion. Now abortion seekers, providers, and third parties who aid and abet abortion could face significant exposure to both criminal penalties and civil suits in many states. Those states are attempting to extend the reach of their bans by sanctioning out-of-state travel and …
The Free Exercise Of Copyright Behind Bars, Viva R. Moffat
The Free Exercise Of Copyright Behind Bars, Viva R. Moffat
Washington and Lee Law Review
People in prison produce vast amounts of creative and expressive work—from paintings and sculptures to essays, novels, music, and NFTs—but they are rarely described as artists and their work is often not described as “art.” Prisoners also do not regularly take advantage of copyright law, the primary form of protection for creative works. They should.
Copyright provides a strong set of rights that combines strains of free expression values with elements of property rights. Copyright confers dignitary and expressive benefits and, for some creators, financial rewards. As such, copyright can be a tool to help prisoners improve their lives, both …
Arbitration And Federal Reform: Recalibrating The Separation Of Powers Between Congress And The Court, Larry J. Pittman
Arbitration And Federal Reform: Recalibrating The Separation Of Powers Between Congress And The Court, Larry J. Pittman
Washington and Lee Law Review
In 1925, Congress, to provide for the enforcement of certain arbitration agreements, enacted the Federal Arbitration Act (“FAA”) as a procedural law to be applicable only in federal courts. However, the United States Supreme Court, seemingly for the purpose of reducing federal courts’ caseloads, co-opted the FAA by disregarding Congress’s intent that the FAA be applicable only in federal courts. And in furtherance of its own Court-created “federal policy in favor of arbitration,” the Court created precedents that limit state regulation of arbitration agreements, including that states cannot exempt disputes from forced or mandatory arbitration agreements or otherwise regulate the …
