Doctor of Education (EdD)
This manuscript examines the role of bibliotherapy, specifically the utilization of literature in the form of books, to address and treat emotional and psychological distress. The document offers a concise historical overview of bibliotherapy, in addition to 29 chapters presenting contemporary accounts illustrating the successful application of bibliotherapy in the lives of both adolescents and adults. Extensive research supports the notion that bibliotherapy constitutes a rational and practical approach to assisting individuals of all ages, with a particular emphasis on adolescents, in overcoming emotional trauma and initiating the healing process. Specifically, a seminal study conducted in the Netherlands by Tijms, …

"Barriers Between Client Education/Communication And Exotic Animal Husbandry", Caileigh M. Linton
Honors College Theses
The purpose of this study is to quantify the knowledge gap between clientele and veterinary staff about exotic animal husbandry corresponding to housing and diet specifically. With the rise of social media platforms and influencers, the spread of misinformation and stigma revolving around the mistrust of veterinary staff has created strife between clients and veterinary professionals. Misinformation influences pet owners to implement aspects of care into their pets lives that may be unnecessary or harmful. Consequently, as veterinary professionals attempt to educate their clients they are not always trusting of the information being provided to them. This can lead to …

In Their Own Words: Student Mental Health In Rural, Low Socioeconomic High Schools, Jason E. Hughes, Jonathan D. Ulmer, J. Spencer Clark, Brandie Disberger, Gaea Hock, Jason Ellis
The Rural Educator
The purpose of this research paper was to highlight the factors students and school staff identify as contributors to mental health issues students attending rural, low socioeconomic high schools experience and the specific mental health issues they witness most. A collective case study was conducted in four rural high schools, two in Kansas and two in West Virginia. Field work at each school involved observations, document collection, and semi-structured focus group interviews with students and school staff. The factors identified as contributors to poor student mental health were pressure, technology, home life, bullying, and stigma. Anxiety, stress, depression, lack of …

Co-Existing With Covid-19: Language Teacher Resiliency In Rural Schools, Kelly Moser, Tianlan Wei
The Rural Educator
Language educators were unprepared for emergency remote language teaching (ERLT) due to lack of training in online pedagogy and negative perceptions of online instruction, and the rural community of language educators have been challenged in unique ways. Using the intersections of content (language teaching), space (rurality), and context (pandemic) as the theoretical framework, this comparative survey study aimed to investigate rural Mississippi language teachers’ beliefs and practices to ERLT in comparison to their counterparts nationwide. Two independent samples, one consisting of 94 Mississippi language teachers and the other consisting of 255 national K-12 language teachers, responded to our electronic survey …

Investigating The Use Of Recurrent Neural Networks In Modeling Guitar Distortion Effects, Caleb Koch, Scott Hawley, Andrew Fyfe
Investigating The Use Of Recurrent Neural Networks In Modeling Guitar Distortion Effects, Caleb Koch, Scott Hawley, Andrew Fyfe
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Guitar players have been modifying their guitar tone with audio effects ever since the mid-20th century. Traditionally, these effects have been achieved by passing a guitar signal through a series of electronic circuits which modify the signal to produce the desired audio effect. With advances in computer technology, audio “plugins” have been created to produce audio effects digitally through programming algorithms. More recently, machine learning researchers have been exploring the use of neural networks to replicate and produce audio effects initially created by analog and digital effects units. Recurrent Neural Networks have proven to be exceptional at modeling audio effects …

Adaptive Reuse Of Frosty Morn, Veronika Kalugina, Rebecca Tonguis, Heidi Gabriel, Peyton Kauffman
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Frosty Morn, a former meat packing facility in Clarksville, TN, is now abandoned, dilapidated, and partially demolished. The site sits within the Red River District neighborhood, which consists of a diverse community of artists. The Red River District has been identified by the Clarksville Mayor’s Office as an area with potential for growth, catalyzed by repurposing the Frosty Morn building as an icon and beacon of the community. Highest and best use research, in addition to community voices, indicated programmatic needs of a farmer’s market, makerspaces, small business incubators, park space, and live/work units. Our presentation will describe how this …

"They Don't Know What They Don't Know": A Study Of Diversion In Lieu Of Lawyer Discipline, Leslie C. Levin, Susan Saab Fortney
Faculty Articles and Papers
Lawyer misconduct can have devastating consequences for clients. But what is the appropriate regulatory response when lawyers make less serious mistakes? For almost thirty years, jurisdictions have offered some lawyers diversion in lieu of discipline. Diversion is intended to help educate lawyers or treat those with impairments so that they do not reoffend. Yet remarkably little is known about how diversion operates, whether it is used appropriately, and how well it seems to work. This Article addresses these questions. It draws on the limited published data and on interviews with disciplinary regulators in twenty-nine jurisdictions about their use of diversion. …
The Accuracy And Reliability Of Target Prices During Extreme Volatility, Lois Van Weringh
The Accuracy And Reliability Of Target Prices During Extreme Volatility, Lois Van Weringh
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis investigates the accuracy of target prices during extreme market conditions influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, comparing the bullish market of 2021 and the bearish market of 2022. Utilizing regression analysis on data from Bloomberg, the study examines how stock prices aligned with analysts' target prices across various sectors. Findings suggest that target prices were more reliable during the bull market of 2021 than in the turbulent bear market of 2022, where frequent adjustments were necessary. This discrepancy highlights the challenges analysts face in predicting stock performance under volatile conditions and suggests a need for more adaptable forecasting models. …

Politics, Integration Of Esg In Ceo Compensation, And Firm Credit Ratings, William Smith Iii
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
This paper investigates how a firm’s political landscape affects the integration of ESG measures in executive compensation contracts, thereby affecting the firm’s ESG performance and credit rating agencies’ valuation of the firm’s default risk. Based on U.S. state senatorial election results, I categorize a state as either predominantly Democratic (blue) or Republican (red). Then I use a firm’s headquarters to define whether a firm is blue, or red. Based on a sample of firm-year observations in the period 2014-2021, the results show that a firm in a blue state is more likely to link executive compensation to ESG performance measures. …

Analysis Of Esg Shareholder Proposals Through The Lens Of The Sasb Materiality Framework, Emme Simning
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
In this paper, I explore what types of immaterial ESG activities are demanded by shareholders. The imminence of SEC climate-disclosure regulation, in addition to more investors considering ESG elements in their investment decisions, makes materiality a key issue. In response, the SASB designed its Materiality Framework that identifies material ESG issues by industry to guide sustainability reporting and disclosures. However, prior literature (Grewal et al., 2016; Schopohl, 2017; Bauer et al., 2022) finds that only 34% to 44% of shareholder proposals submitted are on material issues. Using a sample of ESG shareholder proposals from 2010-2021, I examine how the SASB …

The Gospel Of Luke: Major Themes, Narratives, And Theology, Adelyn Schoenbeck
The Gospel Of Luke: Major Themes, Narratives, And Theology, Adelyn Schoenbeck
Biblical Studies Student Projects
Within the paper, major Lukan themes are portrayed. The birth narrative is reimagined with major themes of the narrative, especially the purpose of the birth narrative to Theophilus, Luke's mentor. The paper defines and identifies Christology and discipleship which is formed from Luke. The paper illustrates what Jesus really means by stating the first century was an "evil and adulterous generation" (Luke 9:41). The essay concludes with the passion narrative and personal challenges that I have faced as studying the book of Luke.

A Change Of Art: Learning Research Strategies In A New Subject Area Through A Libguide Redesign, Laura Sheets
University Libraries Faculty Publications
In the spring of 2020, the art librarian left my institution for another position. As a member of the Humanities team, I volunteered to take on the instruction responsibilities of Art and Design in addition to my other instructional duties. The previous art librarian had a master's degree in art history and a strong relationship with the School of Art. My departing colleague and I had a brief conversation regarding art history research strategies. While I was nervous and mostly on my own (because none of my colleagues had a deep knowledge of art research practices), I knew that my …

Engineering Cell–Ecm–Material Interactions For Musculoskeletal Regeneration, Calvin L. Jones, Brian T. Penney, Sophia K. Theodossiou
Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The extracellular microenvironment regulates many of the mechanical and biochemical cues that direct musculoskeletal development and are involved in musculoskeletal disease. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a main component of this microenvironment. Tissue engineered approaches towards regenerating muscle, cartilage, tendon, and bone target the ECM because it supplies critical signals for regenerating musculoskeletal tissues. Engineered ECM–material scaffolds that mimic key mechanical and biochemical components of the ECM are of particular interest in musculoskeletal tissue engineering. Such materials are biocompatible, can be fabricated to have desirable mechanical and biochemical properties, and can be further chemically or genetically modified to support cell …

Controlling Epidemic Extinction Using Early Warning Signals, Walter Ullon, Eric Forgoston
Controlling Epidemic Extinction Using Early Warning Signals, Walter Ullon, Eric Forgoston
School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
As the recent COVID-19 pandemic has shown us, there is a critical need to develop new approaches to monitoring the outbreak and spread of infectious disease. Improvements in monitoring will enable a timely implementation of control measures, including vaccine and quarantine, to stem the spread of disease. One such approach involves the use of early warning signals to detect when critical transitions are about to occur. Although the early detection of a stochastic transition is difficult to predict using the generic indicators of early warning signals theory, the changes detected by the indicators do tell us that some type of …
A Trust-Assist Framework For Human–Robot Co-Carry Tasks, Corey Hannum, Rui Li, Weitian Wang
A Trust-Assist Framework For Human–Robot Co-Carry Tasks, Corey Hannum, Rui Li, Weitian Wang
School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Robots are increasingly being employed for diverse applications where they must work and coexist with humans. The trust in human–robot collaboration (HRC) is a critical aspect of any shared-task performance for both the human and the robot. The study of a human-trusting robot has been investigated by numerous researchers. However, a robot-trusting human, which is also a significant issue in HRC, is seldom explored in the field of robotics. Motivated by this gap, we propose a novel trust-assist framework for human–robot co-carry tasks in this study. This framework allows the robot to determine a trust level for its human co-carry …

Along Party Lines: Examining The Gubernatorial Party Difference In Covid-19 Mortality Rates In U.S. Counties, Aparna Lhila, Fares Alghanem
Anesthesiology Articles
Drawing upon the literatures on risk factors for COVID-19 and the roles of political party and political partisanship in COVID-19 policies and outcomes, this study quantifies the extent to which differences in Republican- and Democrat-governed counties' observable characteristics explain the Republican - Democrat gap in COVID-19 mortality rate in the United States. We analyze the county COVID-19 mortality rate between February 1 and December 31, 2020 and employ the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition method. We estimate the extent to which differences in county characteristics - demographic, socioeconomic, employment, health status, healthcare access, area geography, and Republican vote share, explain the difference in …

Modern behavioural scientists have come to acknowledge that individual animals may respond differently to the same stimuli and that the quality of welfare and lived experience can affect behavioural responses. However, much of the foundational research in behavioural science lacked awareness of the effect of both welfare and individuality on data, bringing their results into question. This oversight is rarely addressed when citing seminal works as their findings are considered crucial to our understanding of animal behaviour. Furthermore, more recent research may reflect this lack of awareness by replication of earlier methods – exacerbating the problem. The purpose of this …

Creating A Nontraditional Wellness Blog, Tawni M. Rising
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
This service learning project researched sources of shame humans feel about their bodies. So often what we see in the media is curated, seemingly perfect, and fake. I created a non-traditional wellness blog and website called tawnsclaimtoshame.com where I used my background in psychology, biology, anatomy, as well as research, to debunk how culture and the media defines the perfect body. The link for my blog was shared on multiple social media platforms and accessed by many different stakeholders. My blog addresses eating disorders, diet culture, the medicalization of fatness, implicit biases about weight, disparities in sex education, the flaws …
